Abstract:An optical fiber pressure sensor was designed,fabricated and characterized.It employed a Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer and simple intensity-demodulation technology.A square silicon cup processed by anisotropic etching serves as sensitive element for the better consistency than that of circular diaphragm.A large area ratio of the moving mirror to the stationary one is introduced to reduce the nonlinearity due to the non-planarity of the deflection.Reference light generated from a 2×2 optical fiber coupler is used to decrease the influence of intensity variations of the light source.Single-value measurement was achieved under the pressure range from 0 to 38 kPa.The experimental results demonstrate an upmost relative sensitivity of 0.7%/kPa and a reasonable repeatability,consisting well with the theoretical analysis and simulation.A new method of multi-wave or multi-sensor is presented to expand the measurement range with high sensitivity.

Abstract:A practical optical fiber sensor is proposed for hydraulic pressure measurement. A thin-walled cylinder is used as the sensing device, which will be deformed with the applied pressure. Two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are used in the sensor probe. One is stuck on the outer wall of thin-walled cylinder along the circumferential direction to measure the deformation of the cylinder. The other FBG is stuck in the groove which is on the top of the thin-walled cylinder and acts as a temperature measurement device. The accurate pressure can be obtained by monitoring the difference of the two shifted Bragg wavelengths. Theoretical relation between the wavelength shift difference and pressure has been established by the theoretical analysis. Meanwhile, the experiments have been carried out to verify the feasibility. Experiment results show that the sensitivity of the proposed pressure sensor is 69.4 pm/MPa in the region of 0~16 MPa. Compared with other references, the proposed pressure sensor in this letter is more compact with good sensitivity and wide measurement range.

Abstract:Silica fiber under high pressure increases the risk of fiber breakage or permanent deformation, which may cause sensor failure due to mechanical strength limitations. High pressure can also induce birefringence in optical fiber. In this study, we present a simple design and low-cost high pressure sensor using polymer optical fiber (POF) based on the intensity-variation technique. A side-coupling mechanism in the sensor structure is adopted, which varies the intensity with applied pressure. Two POFs are twisted together to create a sensing region where the light is launched in the first fiber and measurement is taken from the second fiber. In sensing phenomena, cladding mode frustrated total internal reflection occurs when pressure increases. Silicone gel is used in the pressure chamber for sealing and preventing leakage. The sensor structure is able to detect high pressure in the MPa range, where we tested up to 4 MPa. For higher sensitivity, twisted and bend structure is analyzed, and sensitivity is achieved at about 432.21 nW/MPa. However, twisted helical structure is adopted to enhance sensing range which is about 50 cm. The proposed high-pressure sensor structure is easier to fabricate and has high stability because it doesn't require any destructive method as compared to other conventional methods.
Studies on High-Sensitivity Hydrostatic Pressure Sensor Using Fiber Bragg Grating

Abstract:The principle to enhance the pressure sensing and sensitivity on fiber Bragg grating(FBG) is analyzed.A packaging structure which is suitable for high-sensitivity hydrostatic pressure sensing is designed.The experimental results show that the pressure sensitivity of this FBG sensor is 9.03×10-3 MPa-1,which is 2946 times of that of the bare-fiber grating sensor.In Changsha Bailu Lake,an experiment of water-depth measurement based on this FBG pressure sensor was finished.Results show that the deep measuring resolution of this sensor can be 5 cm at least,also with wonderful linearity and repeatability.This kind of FBG sensor can satisfy the measuring and controlling reguirement of towed fiber cable.
High-precision optical fiber pressure sensor using frequency-modulated continuous-wave laser interference

Abstract:This work presents a high-precision fiber optic pressure sensor based on frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) laser interference. The pressure sensor is primarily composed of a diaphragm-type Fabry–Pérot (F–P) cavity, with the diaphragm fabricated using high-elasticity SUS631 stainless steel. The external air pressure causes the center of the elastic diaphragm to deform, and this deformation results in a change in the F–P cavity length. The FMCW laser-interference method was used to demodulate the change in the length of the cavity and realize high-precision pressure measurements. The experimental results showed that when the pressure measurement is in the range of 0 kPa–600 kPa, an accuracy of 3.8 Pa can be obtained. In addition, the sensor had very good linearity with pressure change (R2 = 0.999 94), repeatability, and stability.

Abstract:A wearable pressure sensor is developed based on the array of polymeric piezoelectric fiber with metal core covered by beta phase polyvinylidene fluoride layer. Each fiber consists of a polyester-imide enameled copper core, a piezoelectric layer and sputtered gold electrode. Fiber array is fixed on an insulating substrate and well packaged to ensure stable work. This pressure sensor is tested to declare high sensitivity and fast response. Meanwhile, flexibility of this structure indicates its potentiality to be wearable.

Abstract:A miniature shock-wave pressure sensor based on an optical-fiber tip F-P cavity is described. The basic theory and fabrication process of this sensor are given. The transient interferometric phase of this F-P cavity under the action of a shock pressure wave is demodulated by using the passive homodyne demodulation technique. The static and dynamic calibration test are conducted using piston-type pressure calibration machine and air shock tube. The results indicate that the linearity, repeatability, and hysteresis of the sensor within the 1 MPa pressure range are 4.33%, 1.9%, and 2.8%, respectively, and that the resonant frequency is 8.97 MHz. Pressure sensors in the same package is used to measure the blast wave pressure from pre-charged pneumatic. The pressure probe of the ultra-fine package is used to accurately measure the shock wave pressure produced by the focused electromagnetic shock wave source. The results indicate that different pressure sensors with different diaphragm thickness and different packaging forms can measure shock waves with different ranges and rise times.

Abstract:In recent years, flexible pressure sensors have garnered significant attention. However, the development of large-area, low-cost, and easily fabricated flexible pressure sensors remains challenging. We designed a flexible fiber optic pressure sensor for contact force detection based on the principle of backward Rayleigh scattering using a single-mode optical fiber as the sensing element and polymer PDMS as the encapsulation material. To enhance the sensor's sensitivity and stability, we optimized its structural design, parameters, and fabrication process and measured the fiber strain using an optical frequency domain reflectometer (OFDR). The results showed that the sensor achieved a high sensitivity of 6.93247 με/kPa with a PDMS concentration ratio of 10:1, a curing time of 2 h, and a substrate thickness of 5 mm. The sensor demonstrated excellent linearity and repeatability in static performance tests and was successfully used to monitor the plantar pressure distribution in real time. This flexible fiber optic pressure sensor can be developed via a simple fabrication process, has a low cost, and has high sensitivity, highlighting its potential applications in smart wearables and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:In this study, a new type of structure of optical fiber pressure sensor (OFPS) based on polarization modulation is proposed, which selects a high-birefringence fiber (HBF) as the sensing unit to measure the pressure in the fluid medium. The PM-1550-01 fiber produced by NTK Photonics Inc. is evaluated as the sample in our subject. Firstly, the regularities of birefringence variation on the PM-1550-01 followed by the external pressure load and the ambient temperature are analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). The results show that the pressure sensitivity is 2.05 x 10(-6) RIU/MPa in the pressure range of 0-100 MPa, and the temperature sensitivity is 7.27 x 10(-)(10) RIU/degrees C in the temperature range of 0-100 degrees C. Thus, the pressure-temperature cross-sensitivity is only 0.355 kPa/degrees C in theory. Secondly, the expression of the output light intensity of the introduced OFPS is deduced based on the principles of polarization interference and phase modulation. Combined with simulation results, the measurement ranges of the sensor can be set and adjusted by the length of the sensing unit. Finally, the proposed OFPS is fabricated and external pressure tests within the range of 0-50 MPa are completed. The results show that the pressure sensitivity is approximately 0.145 dB/MPa in the pressure range of 0-44 MPa. There is a fine consistency between the experimental data and simulation results. In addition, the proposed OFPS has many other advantages, such as small size, simple fabrication process and large measurement range, which make it appropriate to be applied in high-pressure measurement in hostile conditions, e.g., downhole and ocean-bottom.

Abstract:Pressure sensors have important prospects in wind pressure monitoring of transmission line towers. Optical pressure sensors are more suitable for transmission line towers due to its anti-electromagnetic interference. However, the fiber pressure sensor is not a suitable choice due to expensive and bulky. In this paper, a compact optical Fabry–Pérot (FP) pressure sensor for wind pressure measurement was developed by MEMS technology. The pressure sensor consists of a MEMS sensing chip, a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (Vcsel), and a photodiode (PD). The sensing chip is combined with an FP cavity and a pressure sensing diaphragm which adopts the square film and is fabricated by Silicon on Insulator (SOI) wafer. To calibrate the pressure sensor, the experimental platform which consists of a digital pressure gauge, a pressure loading machine, a digital multimeter, and a laser driver was set up. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the diaphragm is 117.5 nm/kPa. The measurement range and sensitivity of the pressure sensor are 0–700 Pa and 115 nA/kPa, respectively. The nonlinearity, repeatability, and hysteresis of the pressure sensor are 1.48%FS, 2.23%FS, and 1.59%FS, respectively, which lead to the pressure accuracy of 3.12%FS.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a sensitivity-enhanced fiber-optic pressure sensor using a simplified hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (SHC-PCF). The sensing head is fabricated by splicing a single mode fiber to a section of SHC-PCF, while the air claddings at the end of the PCF are selectively blocked by glue sealing and femtosecond laser machining. By immersing the end into water, a compressible Fabry-Prot cavity can be formed in the fiber core of the PCF. Since the air core is opened up to the air claddings at the splicing joint, changing of environmental pressure will cost a large change of the cavity length to balance the pressure, which greatly enhances the pressure sensitivity of the sensor. A pressure sensitivity of 18.15 $\mu$ m/kPa is experimentally demonstrated in the pressure range from 110 to 130 kPa. This sensor has potential applications in the area of highly sensitive pressure measurement.

Abstract:A new type of on-line fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) pressure sensor was proposed.The F-P cavity of the sensor is a micro-ellipsoidal air cavity,which is formed by splicing together a SMF and a solid-core PCF with the specific splicing parameters.The pressure sensor based on F-P interference principle has many advantages such as all-silica structure,simple production process and small temperature cross-talk.In this paper,the relationship between the diameter of the short axis (cavity length) and the radius of the major axis (the effective radius of the sensitive film) in the sealed ellipsoidal air F-P cavity was analyzed.The relationship between the shape of the air F-P cavity and the cavity loss was analyzed by Gaussian beam transmission theory.The relationship among the center deflection,the film thickness and the effective radius of the SiO2 sensitive membrane was analyzed.The pressure sensitive characteristic model of SiO2 film was established,and the numerical analysis and finite element simulation were carried out under the condition of uniform load.The relationship between the wavelength and the pressure was simulated,and it provided a theoretical basis for the design of optical fiber micro-pressure sensor.

Abstract:AbstractAiming at the current pressure monitoring requirement in the energy and chemical industry, combined with the principle of fiber double grating sensing, a fiber optic pressure sensor is designed and developed to meet practical engineering applications. Using corrugated diaphragm pressure sensor structure, the sensor monitoring sensitivity is improved, reducing the monitoring error caused by pressure multi-stage conduction and material expansion and contraction of the traditional diaphragm pressure sensor, and improving the overall stability of the sensor. At the same time, the sensor adopts double grating temperature compensation model, which solves the cross-sensitivity of temperature to pressure measurement and realizes temperature self-compensation of pressure measurement. The experimental results show that the sensor monitoring sensitivity is 0.078 kPa/pm, the monitoring error is $$ < $$0.5 kPa, and it has good linearity and long-term reliability. It is especially suitable for pressure monitoring of flammable and explosive environments such as petroleum, coal and chemical industry, and has good application prospects.

Abstract:A compact and simple double F-P interference optical fiber optic gas pressure sensor based on suspended core structure is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is formed by splicing a Section of thin-walled grapefruit photonic crystal fiber (G-PCF) with single-mode fiber (SMF). By adjusting the special fusion parameters, a short air-cavity region is formed in the G-PCF next to the splicing point with the SMF segment, and the other end of the G-PCF segment is open to the atmosphere. The output interference spectrum of the sensor comprises of two spectral parameters that have different sensitivities to temperature and gas pressure. One of them is the wideband envelope that is associated with the air-cavity and it is only sensitive to the gas pressure but insensitive to the change of ambient temperature. This property is particularly useful for addressing the complex temperature-pressure cross sensitivity of both spectral parameters. The research findings indicate that the sensor can perform an accurate measurement for gas pressure in dynamic range of 0-1.0 MPa under the high temperature condition up to 500 °C.

Abstract:A mono-fiber optic pressure sensor aimed to reduce the size of sensors is designed. A single optic fiber is used to replace the traditional optic fiber bundle, and to collect the light reflected by an elastic spherical diaphragm, which is part of the light emitted out by itself. The single optic fiber works as emitting light fiber as well as receiving light fiber. The diaphragm coils when force is performed upon, and light intensity received by the fiber changes depending on the deformation of the elastic spherical diaphragm. The relationship between sensitivities of the sensor and the distance from the terminal of fiber to the initial diaphragm before force performed upon are researched experimentally. According to the analysis of virtual light spot, light distributing theory is modified, and it makes the consequence of calculations fit the results of experiment well. The sensor with the unique structure can not only minish the size of sensor but also solve the un-detecting-area problem of multi-fiber optic sensors.

Abstract:A fiber-optic extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based pressure sensor system is designed. Using polyimide coated optical fiber, this sensor works in harsh environment of high temperature and high pressure such as oilfield application with the advantages of high sensitivity, quick response and good reliability. Experiments show the sensor system has a pressure accuracy of 0.05MPa over a range of 0.1MPa to 60MPa at room temperature and in the mixed environment of high temperature and high pressure, the pressure accuracy gets to 0.07MPa under the experimental condition.
Performance Study of F-P Pressure Sensor Based on Three-Wavelength Demodulation: High-Temperature, High-Pressure, and High-Dynamic Measurements

Abstract:F-P (Fabry-Perot) pressure sensors have a wide range of potential applications in high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-dynamic environments. However, existing demodulation methods commonly rely on spectrometers, which limits their application to high-frequency pressure signal acquisition. To solve this problem, this study developed a self-compensated, three-wavelength demodulation system composite with an F-P pressure sensor and a thermocouple to construct a comprehensive sensing system. The system produces accurate pressure measurements in high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-dynamic environments. In static testing at room temperature, the sensing system shows excellent linearity, and the pressure sensitivity is 158.48 nm/MPa. In high-temperature testing, the sensing system maintains high linearity in the range of 100 °C to 700 °C, with a maximum pressure-indication error of about 0.13 MPa (0~5 MPa). In dynamic testing, the sensor exhibits good response characteristics at 1000 Hz and 5000 Hz sinusoidal pressure frequencies, with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) greater than 37 dB and 45 dB, respectively. These results indicate that the sensing system proposed in this study has significant competitive advantages in the field of high-temperature, high-speed, and high-precision pressure measurements and provides an important experimental basis and theoretical support for technological progress in related fields.
