Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior, shape memory effect and superelastic property of Ti49.6Ni45.1Cu5Cr0.3 alloy, with Cu and Cr substituting for Ni. After annealing, the alloy showed single step A–M/M–A transformations within the whole annealing temperature range of 623K to 1273K even in the presence and Ti2(Ni, Cu) precipitates. With the increase of the annealing temperature, the transformation temperatures exhibited three stages: increasing from 623K to 873K, decreasing from 873K to 1023K and unchanging from 1023K to 1273K. Meanwhile, the critical stress for stress induced martensitic (SIM) transformation decreased to a minimum value and increased after that, exhibiting a V shape curve. The alloy annealed at 623, 773 and 923K exhibited shape recovery ratio more than 90% when the deformation strain was below 20%.

Abstract:The present contribution will focus on recent advanced transmission electron microscopy studies of Ni-Ti based alloys with the emphasis on features related to the martensitic transformation. The examples range from the atomic scale when looking at the atomic structure of a precipitate to the micron scale when looking at the configuration of these precipitates or to twin configurations in particular ternary alloys. An example of the first is the refinement of the atomic structure of a Ni4Ti3 precipitate formed in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys to enhance the shape memory behaviour. A slice-and-view study to obtain the 3D configuration of these precipitates is an example of the latter. Some other examples will be discussed as well.

Abstract:The present study investigated the microstructure, phase transformation behavior, and functional characteristics of the multicomponent Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V shape memory alloys with the different annealing treatments. The results indicated that the multicomponent Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V alloy annealed at 673 K/5 min was primarily composed of the B2 parent phase and Ti2(Ni,Cu) type precipitates distributing along the grain boundaries. As the annealing temperature increased and the annealing time extended, the chemical composition of the matrix changed slightly due to the precipitation of the Ti2(Ni,Cu) phase. Consequently, the martensitic phase (B19) gradually appeared and the volume friction of the martensite phase gradually increased. The phase constituents of the present Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V shape memory alloy evolved from a B2 austenite phase to a B19 martensite phase with the annealing temperature/time increasing. Additionally, as the annealing temperature and time increased, the grain size also increased. The increment in annealing temperature and the prolongation of annealing time resulted in an increase of martensitic transformation temperatures as a result of the comprehensive effect of chemical composition, grain size, defects’ density, etc. Both yield strength and fracture strength decreased, while the elongation significantly increased (reaching 28% at 1123 K/60 min) with the annealing temperature rising and annealing time prolonging. Under the successively applied prestrain to 8% condition, the recoverable strain decreased from 4.2% to 1.7% for the annealed Ti–Ni–Cu–Al–V shape memory alloy with the annealing temperature/time increasing.

Abstract:The effect of aging on microstructure, martensitic transformation and superelasticity of a Ti48.4Ni51.1Cr0.5 alloy was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and tensile tests. When the alloy was aged at 400 °C for 30 min, Ti3Ni4 precipitate appears. When aged at a temperature between 400 °C and 500 °C, the samples show a two-stage martensitic transformation. The aged Ti48.4Ni51.1Cr0.5 alloy exhibits a well-defined superelasticity at room temperature. The recovery ratio increases with increasing aging temperature from 300 to 450 °C. Further increase of aging temperature leads to the decrease of recovery ratio. The stress hysteresis shows the opposite dependence on aging temperature. The relationship between aging treatment and martensitic transformation and superelasticity can be rationalized by the evolution of Ti3Ni4 precipitate.

Abstract:This in situ TEM study investigated the effect of sample thickness on the martensitic transformation of NiTi. The transformation temperature gradually decreased with decreasing sample thickness. No transformation was observed when the thickness was below a critical value. The critical thickness values for the R phase and martensitic transformations were determined to be similar to 22 nm and similar to 50 nm, respectively, for the Ti-50.8 at.%Ni alloy studied. This apparent "size effect" was attributed to the depletion of Ti in the matrix caused by surface oxidation, as confirmed by oxygen content measurements. These findings demonstrate that natural oxidation and its influence on the transformation temperature must be taken into consideration in the fabrication of micro-electro-mechanical devices using NiTi. Abstract:In present work, microstructure, martensitic transformation and mechanical properties of Ti44Ni47-xNb9Bx (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 5 at.%) alloys were investigated as a function of B content. The results show that the addition of B significantly influences the microstructure of the alloys. The microstructure of Ti44Ni47Nb9 alloy consists of B2 parent phase matrix and beta-Nb phase. When the B content is 0.5 at.%, Nb3B2 phase presents. With further increasing B content to above 1 at.%, TiB and NbB phases present instead of Nb3B2 phase. With increasing B content, the transformation temperatures increase due to the reduced Ni/Ti ratio and Nb content in the matrix. Abstract:Through an image analysis technique of fine layered microstructures of Cu-based single crystalline shape memory alloys under uniaxial tension tests, the phase character function is then obtained to describe quantitatively the microstructures evolution during stress-induced martensitic transformation (MT). Certain, mesoscopical averages were constructed in order to obtain usable information of the microstructures. It was found that MT would occur with a stress drop and certain amounts of phase fraction and number of interfaces. Moreover, the NIT process is of multi-stage. The conclusion of one dimensional model agrees well with experimental result and helped interpreting the phenomena of initiation of MT and stress drop.

Abstract:In present work, microstructure and martensitic transformation of Ni49Ti36-xHf15Scx(x = 0, 0.5, 1, 2 at.%) alloys were investigated. The results show that the Sc addition significantly influences the microstructure of the alloy. After the addition of Sc, Sc2O3 phase presents besides B19' martensite and (Ti,Hf)(2)Ni phase at room temperature. When the Sc content is no less than 1 at.%, the chain-like morphology of (Ti,Hf)(2)Ni phase changes to spherical-like one. Upon cooling and heating, these alloys show single-step martensitic transformation and its reverse transformation. With increasing Sc content, the transformation temperatures are reduced at a rate of 21 degrees C per 1 at.%Sc resulting from the reduced (Ti+Hf+Sc)/Ni ratio. The addition of Sc is effective in improving the thermal cycling stability of martensitic transformation because of the solid-solution strengthening of Sc. After ten cycles, the change of transformation peak temperature of Ni49Ti35.5Hf15Sc0.5 alloy is only 4.7 degrees C. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In the present work, the mechanical and strain recovery characteristics of Ti–V–Al–B shape memory alloy were tailored by changing annealing temperatures. Moreover, effect of annealing temperatures on microstructure and martensitic transformation behavior were investigated systematically. At the annealing temperatures of 650 °C and 700 °C, both α'´ martensite phase and hard α phase coexisted in the annealed Ti–V–Al–B alloys. With the annealing temperatures increasing, amount of α phase gradually decreased and α'´ martensite phase was dominated. The reduction of α phase resulted in the compositional variation, which further triggered the rising of transformation temperatures. The elongation of annealed Ti–V–Al–B alloys continuously increased with the annealing temperatures increasing; whereas the yield strength gradually decreased. The mechanical properties were closely related to the amount of α precipitates and dislocations. Under optimum annealing condition of 700 °C, the maximum yield strength of 489 MPa can be achieved in Ti–V–Al–B alloy. Meanwhile, it showed a largest recoverable strain of 4.6% in correspondence to 6% applied pre-strain.

Abstract:Martensitic transformation, microstructure, and magnetic properties of Ti-doped Ni43-x Ti (x) Co7Mn43Sn7 (at%) (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0) shape memory alloys were investigated. The results show that transformation temperatures of Ni43Co7Mn43Sn7 can be efficiently adjusted by the substitution of Ti for Ni. For example, the martensitic transformation starting temperature (M (s)) is reduced by about 278 K with 4 at% addition of Ti. Room temperature microstructure evolves from single tetragonal martensite for the Ti-free alloy to dual phases (tetragonal martensite + second phase) with 0.5 at%, 1.0 at%, and 2.0 at% addition of Ti to dual phases (cubic austenite + second phase) for 4.0 at% Ti-doped alloy. The mechanical properties can be obviously improved by adding an appropriate amount of Ti. A noteworthy point is that magnetic-field-induced reverse transformation is observed in Ni39Ti4Co7Mn43Sn7 alloy.

Abstract:The purpose of the paper was to investigate the martensitic transformation and its kinetic of the Ti-Ni-Cu-Hf shape memory alloy. The Ti47Ni44Cu6Hf3 alloy would undergo a reversible B2↔B19′ martensitic transformation during thermal cycling process. The apparent activation energy was calculated based on seven different DSC cooling curves. A strong cooling rate dependence of martensitic transformation kinetics was observed and the corresponding mechanism was discussed. Moreover, the variation of transition activation energy for a specific martensite fraction was studied to further characterize the martensitic transformation kinetics.

Abstract:The paper studies the alloying effect of the quenched Ni-low (Ni 49.5 Ti 35.5 Hf 15 ) 100–X Nb X and Ni-rich (Ni 50.3 Ti 34.7 Hf 15 ) 100–X Nb X alloys (X = 0, 15 at.% Nb) on the B2-B19' martensitic transformation, viscoelastic properties and microstructure. Alloying of Ni-low and -rich alloys with Nb, provides the β-Nb phase precipitation within the (Ti, Hf) 2 Ni phase. After alloying, the transformation temperature and austenite elastic modulus decrease in Ni-low alloys and increase in Ni-rich alloys, thus making them similar.

Abstract:The effects of annealing on the phase transformation behavior and superelasticity of cold-rolled Ti50Ni48Fe2 shape memory alloy were extensively investigated. Curves of temperature dependence of electrical resistivity reveal that both the cold-rolled and annealed specimens exhibit a B2 → R→B19′ two-stage martensitic transformation upon cooling and a B19′ → B2 one-stage transformation upon heating, although the austenitic transformation temperature decreases with the increase of the annealing temperature. Tensile stress–strain curves show the critical stress for stress-induced martensite (σ SIM) of Ti50Ni48Fe2 alloys decreases with the increase of annealing temperature due to the decrement of dislocation density caused by the recrystallization. As a result, the σ SIM decreases. Upon a cold-rolling and annealing at 623 K for 30 min, the Ti50Ni48Fe2 alloy exhibits excellent superelasticity with the maximum recoverable strain of 5.8 % at a loading strain of 7 %. In such a case, a complete superelasticity of 5 % can be obtained in the Ti50Ni48Fe2 alloy after deformation increasing to 15 cycles.
The Microstructure and Linear Superelasticity of Cold-Drawn TiNi Alloy

Abstract:The microstructure and linear superelasticity of cold-drawn TiNi alloy have been investigated using CTEM, HREM and in-situ transition electron microscopy observations and tensile tests. The microstructural evolution procedure of the martensite variants with increasing degree of area reduction was found to be that the quantities of (111̄) Type I, (001) compound, (011) Type I and (111) Type I twinning plates increase gradually with decreasing the amount of the 〈011〉 Type II twinning bands. The corresponding dominant deformation mechanism changed from the coalescence of martensite variants to the reorientation of substructural bands inside martensite variants utilizing the most favorably oriented twin systems. The intrinsic reason for the linear superelasticity of the moderately cold-drawn TiNi alloy was confirmed to be associated with the appearance and disappearance of (001) microtwinning inside the 〈011〉 Type II substructural bands.

Abstract:Microstructure, martensitic transformation and mechanical properties of an ultrafine-grained Ti44Ni47Nb9 shape memory alloy processed by equal channel angular pressing were investigated. The as-ECAP processed sample is characterized by an inhomogeneous and refined microstructure. In β-Nb phase-rich region, the grains of matrix are elongated with high density dislocations. In β-Nb phase-free region, the microstructure is partial recovery and characterized by near-equiaxed grains. The heterogeneous microstructure is attributed to presence of β-Nb phase. Martensitic transformation behavior of the as-ECAP processed sample is characterized by a single-stage transformation. The thermal cycling stability of transformation and the mechanical properties are considerably improved due to a strengthening effect resulting from refined grain size and high dislocation density.
Drastic enhancement in hot-workability and microstructural refinement of TiAl alloys via martensitic transformation: A comparative study

Abstract:In this study, the hot deformation behavior of a Ti–42Al-8.5 V alloy with a martensitic staring microstructure was investigated for the first time. For comparison, the same alloy but with a Widmannstatten lamellar structure was also prepared and deformed at identical conditions. It was shown that the martensite exhibited a much lower stress exponent and pronounced flow softening, and the hot-workability was drastically improved. With the aid of the rapid decomposition of the martensite, an excellent fine-grained structure with negligible micro-texture was obtained in a wide temperature-strain rate regime, which was mostly surrounded by high-angle grain boundaries through recrystallization/globularization enhanced by grain boundary sliding. In contrast, the Widmannstatten structure showed a rather poor hot-workability and a retarded refinement efficiency. The deformed microstructure was noticeably non-uniform and micro-textured at nearly all the compression conditions, though the recrystallized grain size was comparable with that of the martensite. To rationalize the distinct deformation behavior of the two starting microstructures, the underlying mechanisms governing the microstructure/orientation evolution were systematically analyzed and discussed. It was suggested that adopting martensite as the starting microstructure may be a potential approach to achieve the optimal microstructural breakdown effect for certain TiAl alloys.
