Abstract:In this study, we focused on the influences of mesospheric gravity wave drag on the winter helium bulge in the thermosphere. The related physical mechanisms are investigated based on the three‐dimensional physics‐based Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Electrodynamic General Circulation Model. The simulation results suggested that the mesospheric gravity wave drag can contribute to the high amplitude of winter helium bulge due to the intensified summer‐to‐winter circulation in the thermosphere. It was found that the meridional pressure gradient force, which dominates the generation of thermospheric large‐scale circulation, shows an increase when the effect of mesospheric gravity wave drag is considered. The change in thermospheric pressure force is attributed to the mesospheric gravity wave drag related winter‐to‐summer flow in the lower thermosphere. This intensified summer‐to‐winter circulation in the thermosphere leads to the decrease and increase of helium concentration in summer and winter, respectively, which thus contributes to the thermospheric winter helium bulge under the effects of mesospheric gravity wave drag.
The Impact of Helium on Thermosphere Mass Density Response to Geomagnetic Activity During the Recent Solar Minimum

Abstract:High‐resolution mass density observations inferred from accelerometer measurements on the CHAMP and GRACE satellites are employed to investigate the thermosphere mass density response with latitude and altitude to geomagnetic activity during the recent solar minimum. Coplanar orbital periods in February 2007 and December 2008 revealed the altitude and latitude response in thermosphere mass density for their respective winter hemispheres was influenced by the relative amount of helium and oxygen present. The CHAMP‐to‐GRACE (C/G) mass density ratio depends on two terms; the first proportional to the ratio of the mean molecular weight to temperature and the second proportional to the vertical gradient of the logarithmic mean molecular weight. For the relative levels of helium and oxygen in February 2007, the winter hemisphere C/G mass density response to geomagnetic activity, although similar to the summer hemisphere, was caused predominantly by changes in the vertical gradient of the logarithmic mean molecular weight. In December 2008, the significant presence of helium caused the mean molecular weight changes to exceed temperature changes in the winter hemisphere leading to an increase in the C/G ratio with increasing geomagnetic activity, in opposition to the decrease observed in the summer hemisphere that was caused primarily by temperature changes. The observed behavior is indicative of composition effects influencing the mass density response and the dynamic action of the oxygen to helium transition region in both latitude and altitude will lead to complex behaviors in the mass density at GRACE altitudes throughout the extended solar minimum from 2007 to 2010.

Abstract:The high‐resolution Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere/ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) is used to study the impacts of gravity waves (GWs) on the thermospheric circulation and composition. The resolved GWs are found to propagate anisotropically with stronger eastward components at most altitudes. The dissipation of these waves in the thermosphere produces a net eastward forcing that reaches peak values between 200 and 250 km at mid‐high latitudes in both hemispheres. Consequently, the mean circulation is weakened in the winter hemisphere and enhanced in the summer, which in turn impacts the thermospheric composition. Most notably, the column integrated O/N2 in both hemispheres is reduced and agrees better with observations. The mean thermospheric GW forcing in the meridional direction has comparable amplitude and acts to modify the gradient‐wind relationship.

Annual Asymmetry in Thermospheric Density: Observations and Simulations

Abstract:In this paper, the Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) observations during 2002-2010 are utilized to study the variation of the annual asymmetry in thermospheric density at 400 km under low solar activity condition (F10.7=80) based on the method of empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs). The derived asymmetry index (AI) in thermospheric density from the EOF analysis shows a strong latitudinal variation at night but varies a little with latitudes in daytime. Moreover, it exhibits a terdiurnal tidal signature at low to middle latitudes. The global mean value of the AI is 0.191, indicating that a 47% difference in thermosphere between the December and June solstices in the global average. In addition, the NCAR Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics Global Circulation Model (TIEGCM) is used to explore the possible mechanisms responsible for the observed annual asymmetry in thermospheric density. It is found that the standard simulations give a lower AI and also a weaker day-to-night difference. The simulated AI shows a semidiurnal pattern in the equatorial and low-latitude regions in contrast with the terdiurnal tide signature seen in the observed AI. The daily mean AI obtained from the simulation is 0.125, corresponding to a 29% December-to-June difference in thermospheric density at 400 km. Further sensitivity simulations demonstrated that the effect of the varying Sun-Earth distance between the December and June solstices is the main process responsible for the annual asymmetry in thermospheric density, while the magnetic field configuration and tides from the lower atmosphere contribute to the temporal and spatial variations of the AI. Specifically, the simulations show that the Sun-Earth distance effect explains 93% of the difference in thermospheric density between December and June, which is mainly associated with the corresponding changes in neutral temperature. However, our calculation from the density observations reveals that the varying Sun-Earth distance effect only accounts for similar to 67% of the December-to-June difference in thermosphere density, indicating that the TIEGCM might significantly underestimate the forcing originating from the lower atmosphere.

Abstract:Atmospheric gravity waves are one of the important dynamic processes in near space and are widely present in the atmosphere. They play a crucial role in the transfer of energy and momentum between different regions of the atmosphere. The Sun, as the ultimate source of gravity wave energy, significantly influences the intensity of gravity wave disturbances through its activity variations. This paper utilizes data from the Global Navigation Satellite System Occultation Sounder (GNOS) onboard the Fengyun-3C (FY-3C) satellite to invert global stratospheric gravity wave disturbances. It provides the global stratospheric gravity wave distribution from 2015 to 2023, nearly covering one solar activity cycle, and focuses on analyzing the response of gravity waves at different latitudes, altitudes, and wavelengths to the solar activity cycle. We found that short-wavelength gravity waves respond more noticeably to solar activity compared to long-wavelength gravity waves. Through analyzing the intensity of stratospheric gravity wave disturbances across different latitude bands, we found that in high-latitude regions, stratospheric gravity wave disturbances are most sensitive and respond most quickly to variations in solar activity. Furthermore, the Southern Hemisphere exhibits a stronger response to the current year's solar activity changes compared to the Northern Hemisphere. In the mid-latitude and equatorial regions, the response to changes in solar activity intensity is delayed. The correlation gradually strengthens with this lag, reaching a very strong level after a 2-year lag. Additionally, the correlation between the Southern Hemisphere and solar activity is generally higher than that of the Northern Hemisphere.

Simulations of the Equatorial Thermosphere Anomaly: Field‐aligned Ion Drag Effect

Abstract:In this paper the impact of the field‐aligned ion drag on equatorial thermosphere temperature and density is quantitatively investigated on the basis of the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR TIEGCM) simulations under high solar activity (F107 = 180). The increase of upward vertical winds over the magnetic equator associated with the additional divergence of meridional winds, caused by the inclusion of field‐aligned ion drag, leads to a reduction in thermosphere temperature and density at the magnetic equator through enhanced adiabatic cooling. We found that the field‐aligned ion drag has an obvious impact on the thermosphere only over the magnetic equatorial region in the daytime and evening sectors, whereas it has less effect on the equatorial thermosphere anomaly (ETA) crests. The daytime neutral temperature over the magnetic equator is reduced by about 30 K, for altitudes above 250 km without significant altitudinal variations, when field‐aligned ion drag is included in the simulation. The thermosphere density in the magnetic equatorial region starts to change slightly at 300 km and depletes by about 5% at 400 km, while experiencing a greater decrease with altitude. Furthermore, the trough produced in the neutral temperature and density corresponds well with the magnetic dip equator. The ETA features during 12:00–18:00 LT become obvious as a result of the inclusion of the field‐aligned ion drag. Specifically, our results show that at 400 km the crest‐trough differences in neutral temperature are about 30–60 K, and the crest‐trough ratios in thermosphere density are 1.03–1.06, comparable with observations.

Abstract:Using an idealized model framework with high-frequency tropical latent heating variability derived from global satellite observations of precipitation and clouds, the authors examine the properties and effects of gravity waves in the lower stratosphere, contrasting conditions in an El Niño year and a La Niña year. The model generates a broad spectrum of tropical waves including planetary-scale waves through mesoscale gravity waves. The authors compare modeled monthly mean regional variations in wind and temperature with reanalyses and validate the modeled gravity waves using satellite- and balloon-based estimates of gravity wave momentum flux. Some interesting changes in the gravity spectrum of momentum flux are found in the model, which are discussed in terms of the interannual variations in clouds, precipitation, and large-scale winds. While regional variations in clouds, precipitation, and winds are dramatic, the mean gravity wave zonal momentum fluxes entering the stratosphere differ by only 11%. The modeled intermittency in gravity wave momentum flux is shown to be very realistic compared to observations, and the largest-amplitude waves are related to significant gravity wave drag forces in the lowermost stratosphere. This strong intermittency is generally absent or weak in climate models because of deficiencies in parameterizations of gravity wave intermittency. These results suggest a way forward to improve model representations of the lowermost stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation winds and teleconnections.

Longitudinal Variation of Thermospheric Density during Low Solar Activity from APOD Observations

Abstract:The longitudinal distribution of upper atmospheric density has been broadly studied. However, the studies mostly focused on 24 h averaged distribution. This study presents the longitudinal distribution of thermospheric density at dawn and dusk, using observations collected by the atmospheric density detector onboard the Chinese satellite APOD (Atmospheric Density Detection and Precise Orbit Determination) during low solar activity. The APOD observations show a significant relative longitudinal variation of thermospheric density with global maxima (Δρrmax) near the geomagnetic pole, especially in the winter hemisphere. The annual maximum of Δρrmax appears in the Southern Hemisphere around the June solstices and reaches 26.3% and 39.6% at dawn and dusk, respectively. The auroral heating and meridional wind might play a significant role in the longitudinal variation of thermospheric density. We further compare the APOD observations with the semi-empirical atmospheric model MSIS (Mass Spectrometer Incoherent Scatter Radar) 2.0 predictions under low solar activity conditions. The MSIS 2.0 model reproduces similar longitudinal variations to the observations, with hemispheric asymmetry. The longitudinal variation of thermospheric density from APOD should be related to the distribution of the atmospheric average molecular weight from the model. More observational data are needed to verify the results of this study further.

The Midlatitude Thermospheric Dynamics from an Interhemispheric Perspective

Abstract:Using Fabry‐Perot interferometers at five midlatitude stations (Boulder, Palmer, Millstone Hill, Mount John, and Kelan) in both hemispheres, we examine the interhemispheric and seasonal variations of midlatitude thermospheric dynamics. We also use the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) to simulate the seasonal changes of winds and the effects from Sub‐Auroral Polarization Streams. The observations and TIEGCM simulations show a clear seasonal variation with more westward and equatorward summer winds. The TIEGCM runs overestimate the westward zonal winds and underestimate the electron densities in the northern summer. We believe that the underestimated TIEGCM electron density leads to a weak ion drag effect in the model, and strong westward zonal winds. TIEGCM overestimates the Sub‐Auroral Polarization Stream effects on neutral winds in most cases, probably because the empirical Sub‐Auroral Polarization Stream model used by the TIEGCM applies an unrealistic persistent electric field for a long period of time (over 3 hr) due to the low temporal resolution of the Kp index.
The Dominant Role of the Summer Hemisphere in Subtropical Lower Stratospheric Wave Drag Trends

Abstract:It is well established that the shallow branch of the Brewer‐Dobson circulation accelerates in a warming climate due to enhanced wave drag in the subtropical lower stratosphere. This has been linked to the strengthening of the upper flanks of the subtropical jets. However, the seasonality of the zonal wind trends, peaking in the winter hemisphere, is opposite to that of the Eliassen‐Palm flux convergence trends, peaking in summer. We investigate the seasonality in the wave drag trends and find a different behavior for each hemisphere. The Shepherd and McLandress (2011, https://doi.org/10.1175/2010jas3608.1) mechanism, involving transient wave dissipation at higher levels following the rise of the critical lines, is found to maximize in austral summer. On the other hand, in the Northern Hemisphere the wave drag increase peaks in summer primarily due to the changes in the stationary planetary waves (monsoonal circulations) associated with enhanced deep convection.

Abstract:Large horizontal winds and shears across the mesopause region have been observed by sounding rockets and satellites but with limited simultaneous temperature profiles to date. This feature is critical to the diagnosis of the insitu dynamic conditions. Theories suggest this feature may be related to variations of the atmosphere static stability, Brunt‐Väisälä frequency square (N2), and the wave activity in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) that cannot be resolved by the models. Since 2020, the Na Doppler lidar at Utah State University has attained several hundred hours of wind and temperature profiles in the MLT up to ∼110 km altitude. This paper focuses on the variations of these large winds and shears (>40 m/s/km), along with their potential relation to the activities of the various scales of gravity waves in the static state upper mesosphere, measured coordinately by the Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper operating alongside the lidar. The investigation reveals that larger shears tend to occur in the meridional direction than the zonal direction and are observed more frequently in winter. The shears are comparable in both directions in summer and more large shears were observed in zonal direction. In addition, small shears occur when the medium‐scale waves are completely or partially blocked by the mean wind, though no convincing evidence relates small‐scale wave activities with these large winds and shears. Furthermore, small and decreasing N2 in the upper mesopause region are associated with insignificant magnitude of the shears.

A Numerical Study of the High Latitudinal Ion‐Neutral Coupling Time Scale under Disturbed Conditions

Abstract:When solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) disturb, thermospheric winds change accordingly. Among the momentum forces driving high‐latitude thermospheric winds, ion drag is supposed to greatly affect wind variations through ion‐neutral coupling when abrupt and strong changes in ion drifts occur. However, due to the great inertia of thermospheric winds it needs a certain period of time for the wind changes to be prominent both in speed and direction. How long the neutral winds take to change from one steady state to another through the ion‐neutral coupling process is currently still a controversial issue. In this paper, we examine the high latitudinal ion‐neutral coupling time scale based on the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model simulations, which can determine whether wind variations are dominantly driven by ion drag by analyzing the relative contribution of each momentum force. It is found that the spatial variation of ion‐neutral coupling time scale is primarily determined by local electron density, but also varies with neutral density and ion‐neutral collision frequency. Simulations during periods of medium solar activity at ∼250 km altitude show that the ion drag‐dominated region is generally located at the dayside convection inverse boundary and the coupling time scale (e‐folding time) is ∼1 hr when IMF By is the dominant component of the IMF and changes direction. Meanwhile, the southward component of IMF Bz enlarges the ion drag‐dominated region. When IMF Bz is southward with a large magnitude, ion drag‐dominated region is primarily located in the nightside auroral oval with ∼2 hr coupling time scale.
Statistical Analysis of Thermospheric Density Response to Solar Wind Sector Structure

Abstract:The global averaged thermospheric mass density data during 1967-2007 are analyzed to investigate thermospheric response to solar wind sector structure. Well-defined solar wind sectors have polarities of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) toward (+B-x, -B-y) or away (-B-x, +B-y) from the Sun for multiple days. In March, thermospheric mass densities increase from the away to toward polarities, with a maximum density perturbation of similar to 23% at 400km with respect to the 11day averages; they decline from the toward to away polarities, and the maximum reduction at 400km can reach 12%, which is associated with a weakened heating effect of the geomagnetic activity. In September, thermospheric densities respond in an opposite way to the same sector structure as compared with the March results. In solstice seasons, thermospheric density variations in response to solar wind sector structure are typically smaller than 10% relative to the 11day averages. Besides the seasonal dependence, relative density changes tend to become greater at higher altitude and lower solar activity. However, during solar minimum the density variations at 550km are not substantially larger than those at 400km due to the possible descending of the transition altitude between helium and atomic oxygen. Moreover, the corotating interaction region (CIR) has a high probability to occur around the sector boundary. Consequently, the CIR effects account for one third of the density enhancement at 400km during ineffective-effective sectors, whereas the density reduction associated with effective-ineffective sectors can be impaired by about 50%, which is independent of altitude.
Characteristics and Mechanisms of the Annual Asymmetry of Thermospheric Mass Density

Abstract:In this paper, globally-averaged, thermospheric total mass density, derived from the orbits of ∼5000 objects at 250, 400, and 550 km that were tracked from 1967 to 2006, has been used to quantitatively study the annual asymmetry of thermospheric mass density and its mechanism(s). The results show that thermospheric mass density had a significant annual asymmetry, which changed from year to year. The annual asymmetry at the three altitudes varied synchronously and its absolute value increased with altitudes. The results suggest that there is an annual asymmetry in solar EUV radiation that is caused by the difference in the Sun-Earth distance between the two solstices and the random variation of solar activity within a year. This change in radiation results in an annual change in the thermospheric temperature and thus the scale height of the neutral gas, and is the main cause of the annual asymmetry of thermospheric mass density. The annual asymmetry of mass density increases with altitude because of the accumulating effect of the changes in neutral temperature and scale height in the vertical direction.

Abstract:Thermospheric response to Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) has been studied previously; however, its solar cycle and seasonal effects have not been fully investigated. Thermospheric mass density at 400 km measured by the CHAMP satellite during 2001-2008 and Sigma O/N2 from the TIMED/GUVI instrument covering a period from 2002 to 2008 are used to investigate the solar cycle and seasonal dependencies of the thermospheric response to CIRs. Our results reveal: (1) solar minimum CIRs compared to solar maximum counterparts have larger solar wind speeds before and after the stream interface. However, solar wind dynamic pressure and merging electric field are slightly larger at solar maximum than solar minimum. (2) CIR-induced variations of Sigma O/N2 are characterized by high latitude depression and low latitude enhancement, a distinction from global enhancement of neutral density at a fixed altitude. These relative thermospheric changes are dependent on solar cycle, with a more pronounced increase in neutral density at all latitudes and a stronger decrease in Sigma O/N2 at high latitude at solar minimum than at solar maximum. (3) A seasonal asymmetry is presented in the relative deviations of thermospheric mass density and composition. On the dayside, the peak increases of neutral density at high latitudes on average are similar to 40% in the summer hemisphere and similar to 26% in the winter hemisphere. Nighttime neutral density changes are more remarkable than that in the same latitudinal bands of daytime and have the same seasonal preference of enhancement as the dayside. At the daytime, Sigma O/N2 at high latitudes suffers more reduction in the summer hemisphere than in the winter hemisphere. At middle latitudes, Sigma O/N2 reduces in the winter hemisphere; nevertheless, it increases slightly in the summer hemisphere.

Interplanetary Influence on Thermospheric Mass Density: Insights From Deep Learning Analyses

Abstract:In this study, the thermospheric mass density (TMD) features observed by the CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload between 2002 and 2010 were extracted using deep learning (DL) technology; the TMD features were then mapped and modeled with the Interplanetary environment information (IEI), solar radiation, and geomagnetic indices. The DL model was used to simulate the TMD features during Day of Year (DOY) 222–241 in 2014, a period that experienced complex solar‐terrestrial environmental variations. We explore the TMD features under different solar‐terrestrial environmental conditions and discuss the effects of various inputs by comparing the DL simulation results with satellite observations from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment‐A and Swarm‐A, as well as the simulation results from Jacchia‐Bowman 2008, Naval Research Laboratory Mass Spectrometer Incoherent Scatter radar model 2.1, and Drag Temperature Model 2013. These results show that the DL model can better capture the TMD features after adding IEI. Part of these TMD features, including the high‐latitude TMD enhancement during the space hurricane event (DOY 232, 2014) and global TMD variations under complex solar‐terrestrial environmental disturbances (DOY 222–225, 2014), cannot be well described by the geomagnetic indices. The DL model indicates that the east‐west component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF By) has a great impact on TMD variations, and its modulation is different from the typical energy injection process during storms. Our results emphasize the crucial influence of IEI on TMD under both geomagnetic disturbances and quiet conditions.

The Longitudinal Variations of Upper Thermospheric Zonal Winds Observed by the CHAMP Satellite at Low and Midlatitudes

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the longitudinal patterns of thermospheric zonal winds (~400 km) and their seasonal and solar activity dependence using CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload cross‐track wind data and Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) simulations. CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload data show that there are large longitudinal variations in thermospheric zonal winds. These longitudinal variations do not have significant solar activity dependence. In the northern hemisphere at low and middle latitudes, the daytime zonal winds are more westward between −90° and 90° longitudes and more eastward at other longitudes. The nighttime zonal wind direction with pattern is opposite to that in the daytime. In the southern hemisphere at low and middle latitudes, the local time variation of the longitudinal wind structure, including positive and negative peak locations, is almost the reverse of that in the northern hemisphere. Thus, the zonal wind patterns also show great hemispheric asymmetry. In addition, the longitudinal patterns of zonal winds in both hemispheres show seasonal variations. The longitudinal patterns during the June solstice are significantly different from those in other seasons. These observational results are well reproduced in TIEGCM simulations. To elucidate the physical processes responsible for the observed and simulated longitudinal patterns of the zonal winds, the TIEGCM is also run for different geomagnetic field configurations. A comparison between the TIEGCM results shows that geomagnetic field structure is the main cause of the large longitudinal variations of thermospheric zonal winds and their local time, hemispheric asymmetry, and seasonal changes at low and middle latitudes.
