Abstract:Gravity waves are generated by turbulent subsurface convection overshooting or penetrating locally into a stably stratified medium. While propagating energy upwards, their characteristic negative phase shift over height is a well-recognized observational signature. Since their first detailed observational detection and estimates of energy content, a number of studies have explored their propagation characteristics and interaction with magnetic fields and other wave modes in the solar atmosphere. Here, we present a study of the atmospheric gravity wave dispersion diagrams utilizing intensity observations that cover photospheric to chromospheric heights over different magnetic configurations of quiet-Sun (magnetic network regions), a plage, and a sunspot as well as velocity observations within the photospheric layer over a quiet and a sunspot region. In order to investigate the propagation characteristics, we construct two-height intensity - intensity and velocity-velocity cross-spectra and study phase and coherence signals in the wavenumber-frequency dispersion diagrams and their association with background magnetic fields. We find signatures of association between magnetic fields and much reduced coherence and phase shifts over height from intensity-intensity and velocity-velocity phase and coherence diagrams, both indicating suppression/scattering of gravity waves by the magnetic fields. Our results are consistent with the earlier numerical simulations, which indicate that gravity waves are suppressed or scattered and reflected back into the lower solar atmosphere in the presence of magnetic fields.

Medium-scale thermospheric gravity waves in the high-resolution Whole Atmosphere Model: Seasonal, local time, and longitudinal variations

Abstract:This paper presents a study of the global medium-scale (scales<620 km) gravity wave (GW) activity (in terms of zonal wind variance) and its seasonal, local time and longitudinal variations by employing the enhanced-resolution (~50 km) Whole Atmosphere Model (WAMT254) and space-based observations for geomagnetically quiet conditions. It is found that the GW hotspots produced by WAMT254 in the troposphere and stratosphere agree well with previously well-studied orographic and non-orographic sources. In the ionosphere-thermosphere (IT) region, GWs spread out forming latitudinal band-like hotspots. During solstices, a primary maximum in GW activity is observed in WAMT254 and GOCE over winter mid-high latitudes, likely associated with higher-order waves with primary sources in polar night jet, fronts and polar vortex. During all the seasons, the enhancement of GWs around the geomagnetic poles as observed by GOCE (at ~250 km) is well captured by simulations. WAMT254 GWs in the IT region also show dependence on local time due to their interaction with migrating tides leading to diurnal and semidiurnal variations. The GWs are more likely to propagate up from the MLT region during westward/weakly-eastward phase of thermospheric tides, signifying the dominance of eastward GW momentum flux in the MLT. Additionally, as a novel finding, a wavenumber-4 signature in GW activity is predicted by WAMT254 between 6-12 LT in the tropics at ~250 km, which propagates eastward with local time. This behavior is likely associated with the modulation of GWs by wave-4 signal of non-migrating tides in the lower thermospheric zonal winds.

First Observation of Mesosphere Response to the Geomagnetic Forcing

Abstract:We present a first observation and analysis of 13.5, 9 and 6.75-day periodic oscillations observed in the neutral mesosphere density in the declining phase of solar cycle 23 and 24. Mesospheric densities near 90 km are derived using data from the Davis meteor radar (68.5°S, 77.9°E), Antarctica. Spectral analysis indicates that the pronounced periodicities of 13.5, 9 and 6.75 days observed in the mesosphere densities are associated with variations in solar wind high-speed streams and recurrent geomagnetic activities. A Morlet wavelet analysis shows that the time evolution of the 13.5, 9- and 6.75-day oscillations in the neutral mesosphere densities are similar to those in the solar wind and in planetary magnetic activity index, Kp. These results demonstrate a direct coupling between the upper atmosphere (corona) of the Sun and the Earth’s mesosphere.
Sensitivity of Gravity Wave Fluxes to Interannual Variations in Tropical Convection and Zonal Wind.

Abstract:Using an idealized model framework with high-frequency tropical latent heating variability derived from global satellite observations of precipitation and clouds, the authors examine the properties and effects of gravity waves in the lower stratosphere, contrasting conditions in an El Niño year and a La Niña year. The model generates a broad spectrum of tropical waves including planetary-scale waves through mesoscale gravity waves. The authors compare modeled monthly mean regional variations in wind and temperature with reanalyses and validate the modeled gravity waves using satellite- and balloon-based estimates of gravity wave momentum flux. Some interesting changes in the gravity spectrum of momentum flux are found in the model, which are discussed in terms of the interannual variations in clouds, precipitation, and large-scale winds. While regional variations in clouds, precipitation, and winds are dramatic, the mean gravity wave zonal momentum fluxes entering the stratosphere differ by only 11%. The modeled intermittency in gravity wave momentum flux is shown to be very realistic compared to observations, and the largest-amplitude waves are related to significant gravity wave drag forces in the lowermost stratosphere. This strong intermittency is generally absent or weak in climate models because of deficiencies in parameterizations of gravity wave intermittency. These results suggest a way forward to improve model representations of the lowermost stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation winds and teleconnections.

Multi-Height Observations of Atmospheric Gravity Waves at Solar Disk Center

Abstract:Atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) are low-frequency, buoyancy-driven waves that are generated by turbulent convection and propagate obliquely throughout the solar atmosphere. Their proposed energy contribution to the lower solar atmosphere and sensitivity to atmospheric parameters (e.g. magnetic fields and radiative damping) highlight their diagnostic potential. We investigate AGWs near a quiet Sun disk center region using multi-wavelength data from the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). These observations showcase the complex wave behavior present in the entire acoustic-gravity wave spectrum. Using Fourier spectral analysis and local helioseismology techniques on simultaneously observed line core Doppler velocity and intensity fluctuations, we study both the vertical and horizontal properties of AGWs.Propagating AGWs with perpendicular group and phase velocities are detected at the expected temporal and spatial scales throughout the lower solar atmosphere. We also find previously unobserved, varied phase difference distributions among our velocity and intensity diagnostic combinations. Time-distance analysis indicates that AGWs travel with an average group speed of 4.5 kms$^{-1}$, which is only partially described by a simple simulation suggesting that high-frequency AGWs dominate the signal. Analysis of the median magnetic field (4.2 G) suggests that propagating AGWs are not significantly affected by quiet Sun photospheric magnetic fields. Our results illustrate the importance of multi-height observations and the necessity of future work to properly characterize this observed behavior.

Abstract:In this paper we report the detection of a large‐scale gravity wave propagating over an extremely large horizontal distance in the thermosphere on 28 July 2006. Specifically, after being launched at the northern auroral region on the dayside, this wave propagated equatorward with phase speeds on the order of ∼720 m/s and finally almost traveled around the Earth once horizontally in the thermosphere prior to dissipation. The time taken to dissipate is about 15.5 h. It is the farthest‐traveling large‐scale gravity wave currently tracked by satellite measurements, made possible by a sudden injection of energy in an unusually clean propagation environment. This experiment of opportunity serves as an important step in furthering our theoretical understanding of gravity wave propagation and dissipation in the thermosphere.
The Variations of Gravity Wave Activities During the Formation of the Large Horizontal Wind Shears in the Static State Lower Thermosphere

Abstract:Large horizontal winds and shears across the mesopause region have been observed by sounding rockets and satellites but with limited simultaneous temperature profiles to date. This feature is critical to the diagnosis of the insitu dynamic conditions. Theories suggest this feature may be related to variations of the atmosphere static stability, Brunt‐Väisälä frequency square (N2), and the wave activity in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) that cannot be resolved by the models. Since 2020, the Na Doppler lidar at Utah State University has attained several hundred hours of wind and temperature profiles in the MLT up to ∼110 km altitude. This paper focuses on the variations of these large winds and shears (>40 m/s/km), along with their potential relation to the activities of the various scales of gravity waves in the static state upper mesosphere, measured coordinately by the Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper operating alongside the lidar. The investigation reveals that larger shears tend to occur in the meridional direction than the zonal direction and are observed more frequently in winter. The shears are comparable in both directions in summer and more large shears were observed in zonal direction. In addition, small shears occur when the medium‐scale waves are completely or partially blocked by the mean wind, though no convincing evidence relates small‐scale wave activities with these large winds and shears. Furthermore, small and decreasing N2 in the upper mesopause region are associated with insignificant magnitude of the shears.

Global analysis for periodic variations of gravity wave squared amplitudes and momentum fluxes in the middle atmosphere

Abstract:Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) are an important coupling mechanism in the middle atmosphere. For instance, they provide a large part of the driving of long-period atmospheric oscillations such as the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and the semiannual oscillation (SAO) and are in turn modulated. They also induce the wind reversal in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere region (MLT) and the residual mean circulation at these altitudes. In this study, the variations in monthly zonal mean gravity wave square temperature amplitudes (GWSTAs) and, for the first time, absolute gravity wave momentum flux (GWMF) on different timescales such as the annual, semiannual, terannual and quasi-biennial variations are investigated by spectrally analyzing SABER observations from 2002 to 2015. Latitudealtitude cross sections of spectral amplitudes and phases of GWSTA and absolute GWMF in the stratosphere and mesosphere are presented and physically interpreted. It is shown that the time series of GWSTA and GWMF at a certain altitude and latitude results from the complex interplay of GW sources, propagation through and filtering in lower altitudes, oblique propagation superposing GWs from different source locations, and, finally, the modulation of the GW spectrum by the winds at a considered altitude and latitude. The strongest component is the annual variation, dominated in the summer hemisphere by subtropical convective sources and in the winter hemisphere by polar vortex dynamics. At heights of the wind reversal, a 180 degrees phase shift also occurs, which is at different altitudes for GWSTA and GWMF. In the intermediate latitudes a semiannual variation (SAV) is found. Dedicated GW modeling is used to investigate the nature of this SAV, which is a different phenomenon from the tropical SAO also seen in the data. In the tropics a stratospheric and a mesospheric QBO are found, which are, as expected, in antiphase. Indication for a QBO influence is also found at higher latitudes. In previous studies a terannual variation (TAV) was identified. In the current study we explain its origin. In particular the observed patterns for the shorter periods, SAV and TAV, can only be explained by poleward propagation of GWs from the lower-stratosphere subtropics into the midlatitude and high-latitude mesosphere. In this way, critical wind filtering in the lowermost stratosphere is avoided and this oblique propagation is hence likely an important factor for MLT dynamics.

Abstract:Atmospheric gravity waves are one of the important dynamic processes in near space and are widely present in the atmosphere. They play a crucial role in the transfer of energy and momentum between different regions of the atmosphere. The Sun, as the ultimate source of gravity wave energy, significantly influences the intensity of gravity wave disturbances through its activity variations. This paper utilizes data from the Global Navigation Satellite System Occultation Sounder (GNOS) onboard the Fengyun-3C (FY-3C) satellite to invert global stratospheric gravity wave disturbances. It provides the global stratospheric gravity wave distribution from 2015 to 2023, nearly covering one solar activity cycle, and focuses on analyzing the response of gravity waves at different latitudes, altitudes, and wavelengths to the solar activity cycle. We found that short-wavelength gravity waves respond more noticeably to solar activity compared to long-wavelength gravity waves. Through analyzing the intensity of stratospheric gravity wave disturbances across different latitude bands, we found that in high-latitude regions, stratospheric gravity wave disturbances are most sensitive and respond most quickly to variations in solar activity. Furthermore, the Southern Hemisphere exhibits a stronger response to the current year's solar activity changes compared to the Northern Hemisphere. In the mid-latitude and equatorial regions, the response to changes in solar activity intensity is delayed. The correlation gradually strengthens with this lag, reaching a very strong level after a 2-year lag. Additionally, the correlation between the Southern Hemisphere and solar activity is generally higher than that of the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract:This study investigates the spatial and temporal variability of global stratospheric gravity waves (GWs) and the characteristics of GW activity during sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) using the GPS radio occultation measurements from the COSMIC mission during September 2006 to May 2013. Corresponding to the COSMIC RO observational window and analysis method, GW potential energy (Ep) with vertical scales no shorter than ∼2 km is resolved. It is found that the distributions of GW Ep over 20–30 km and 30–38 km show similar spatial and seasonal variations. The variations of GW Ep with altitude and latitude along the westerly wind are identified in different seasons over 60◦–80◦W. In the middle and high latitudes, seasonal cycles are distinct in the time–latitude and time–altitude distributions of GW activities, which show larger Ep in winters when westerly wind dominates and smaller Ep in summers when easterly wind dominates. The influence of quasi-biennial oscillation on GW activity is recognized in the tropics. GW Ep enhances closely following the occurrence of minor SSW events; while during major events, GW Ep may not enhance, and sometimes may even weaken, in the regions where reversals of zonal wind occur, probably caused by the filtering impact of the 0 m s−1 wind level on the GWs.

Abstract:Geographical and seasonal variations of gravity wave events in the upper mesosphere were investigated using the nightglow imaging data obtained by the Visible and near-Infrared Spectral Imager (VISI) on the Ionosphere, Mesosphere, upper Atmosphere and Plasmasphere (IMAP) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The nadir-imaging data of the O 2 (0–0) atmospheric band (762 nm) with the typical emission peak around 95 km altitude was used to investigate small-scale waves (horizontal wavelengths less than ~ 200 km) on a global scale. To detect gravity wave events, the variance of high-pass filtered nightglow images within a local 100 km radius was evaluated, with a threshold set at three times the standard deviation from the average variance of the background level. A data screening algorithm that evaluates the variance of upwelling contamination light emission was also introduced to remove contaminated data. Applying the variance filter and data screening algorithm to a nearly 3-year data set, from November 2012 to August 2015, occurrence maps of wave events for four seasons were derived. The occurrence maps show a higher frequency of wave events in winter high latitudes (> 40° N/S), considerably attributed to gravity wave activity associated with the polar night jet. Hot spots were observed near orographic sources in winter high latitudes, including the eastern part of North America, Europe, and the southern Andes. In the summer hemisphere, hot spots were detected at mid-to-high latitudes such as North America, Europe, and the eastern side of the Eurasian continent, and at equatorial latitudes just above the intertropical convection zone (ITCZ). They are likely gravity waves from deep convection that arise from mid-latitude summertime thunderstorms and the ITCZ, respectively. During the equinox seasons, hot spots were detected near convective sources such as the Amazon Rainforest, Congo Rainforest, and the Indochina peninsula.

Abstract:Abstract Convection‐generated gravity waves (CGWs) transport momentum and energy, and this momentum is a dominant driver of global features of Earth's atmosphere's general circulation (e.g., the quasi‐biennial oscillation, the pole‐to‐pole mesospheric circulation). As CGWs are not generally resolved by global weather and climate models, their effects on the circulation need to be parameterized. However, quality observations of GWs are spatiotemporally sparse, limiting understanding and preventing constraints on parameterizations. Convection‐permitting or ‐resolving simulations do generate CGWs, but validation is not possible as these simulations cannot reproduce the CGW‐forcing convection at correct times, locations, and intensities. Here, realistic convective diabatic heating, learned from full‐physics convection‐permitting Weather Research and Forecasting simulations, is predicted from weather radar observations using neural networks and a previously developed look‐up table. These heating rates are then used to force an idealized GW‐resolving dynamical model. Simulated CGWs forced in this way closely resembled those observed by the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder in the upper stratosphere. CGW drag in these validated simulations extends 100s of kilometers away from the convective sources, highlighting errors in current gravity wave drag parameterizations due to the use of the ubiquitous single‐column approximation. Such validatable simulations have significant potential to be used to further basic understanding of CGWs, improve their parameterizations physically, and provide more restrictive constraints on tuning with confidence .

Abstract:Gravity waves (GWs) transport momentum and energy in the atmosphere, and it has become a difficult problem how to use satellites data to extract the horizontal parameters of GWs. We firstly applied the multi-channel maximum entropy method to the temperature profile triples based on the favorable conditions of satellite flight between year 2006 and 2007 after COSMIC launch, and analyzed the three-dimensional properties of GWs. The latitudinal and seasonal distribution of horizontal wavelengths of gravity waves were obtained. The momentum fluxes showed the maximum in the summertime subtropics and the wintertime high latitudes, which revealed possible convective sources in the summertime subtropics and mountain waves expected to occur in the winter jet region in the winter hemisphere high latitudes. The fluxes also showed the maximum at summer high latitudes, which were seldom reported.

Abstract:Abstract A new version of NCAR Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere/ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) has been developed. The main feature of this version is the species‐dependent spectral element (SE) dynamical core solved on a cubed sphere grid, eliminating the polar singularity and enabling simulations at high‐resolutions. Molecular viscosity and diffusion in the horizontal direction are also included. The Conservative Semi‐Lagrangian Multi‐Tracer Transport Scheme (CSLAM) is employed for the species transport. An efficient regridding scheme based on the Earth System Modeling Framework is used to map fields between the physics mesh and geomagnetic grid. Simulations have been performed at coarse (∼200 km and 0.25 scale height) and high (∼25 km and 0.1 scale height) resolutions. Spatial distribution of the resolved gravity waves from the high‐resolution simulations compares well with available observations in the middle and upper atmosphere. Analysis of the scale dependence of the gravity wave energy density and momentum flux shows that, while larger scale waves are dominant energetically at most latitudes, smaller scale waves contribute significantly to the total momentum flux, especially at mid‐high latitudes. The waves in the thermosphere are shown to be strongly modulated by the large‐scale wind through Doppler shift and molecular damping, and they cause large neutral atmosphere and plasma perturbations.

Effects of latitude-dependent gravity wave source variations on the middle and upper atmosphere

Abstract:Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) are generated in the lower atmosphere by various weather phenomena. They propagate upward, carry energy and momentum to higher altitudes, and appreciably influence the general circulation upon depositing them in the middle and upper atmosphere. We use a three-dimensional first-principle general circulation model (GCM) with an implemented nonlinear whole atmosphere GW parameterization to study the global climatology of wave activity and produced effects at altitudes up to the upper thermosphere. The numerical experiments were guided by the GW momentum fluxes and temperature variances as measured in 2010 by the SABER (Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry) instrument onboard NASA's TIMED (Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics Dynamics) satellite. This includes the latitudinal dependence and magnitude of GW activity in the lower stratosphere for the boreal summer season. The modeling results were compared to the SABER temperature and total absolute momentum flux, and Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) data in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Simulations suggest that, in order to reproduce the observed circulation and wave activity in the middle atmosphere, smaller than the measured GW fluxes have to be used at the source level in the lower atmosphere. This is because observations contain a broader spectrum of GWs, while parameterizations capture only a portion relevant to the middle and upper atmosphere dynamics. Accounting for the latitudinal variations of the source appreciably improves simulations.

Abstract:Multiyear high‐frequency gravity wave (GW) momentum fluxes and variances in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere region are revealed using four meteor radars along 120°E longitude at Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes for the first time, which are located at Mohe (53.5°N, 122.3°E), Beijing (40.3°N, 116.2°E), Mengcheng (33.3°N, 116.5°E), and Wuhan (30.5°N, 114.2°E), respectively. The seasonal and latitudinal variations of GW momentum fluxes in the midlatitude are discussed. The directions of the monthly mean zonal momentum fluxes are mostly against the background mean zonal winds, which agree well with the selective filtering mechanism. The seasonal variations of meridional momentum fluxes have similar trends over all four stations. The latitudinal variations in the seasonal variation of GW momentum fluxes are mainly due to the latitudinal variations of background winds and GW sources. The unexpected eastward momentum fluxes in winter over Beijing are likely caused by the secondary GWs propagating eastward from the source region over the Tibetan Plateau (25°–40°N, 70–100°E). The GW variances show a V‐shaped structure indicating annual and semiannual variations over four stations in zonal component. A quasi‐4‐month oscillation was observed over Mohe, Mengcheng, and Wuhan in meridional component. The background winds play decisive roles in these GW variance structures.
