Abstract:Using an idealized model framework with high-frequency tropical latent heating variability derived from global satellite observations of precipitation and clouds, the authors examine the properties and effects of gravity waves in the lower stratosphere, contrasting conditions in an El Niño year and a La Niña year. The model generates a broad spectrum of tropical waves including planetary-scale waves through mesoscale gravity waves. The authors compare modeled monthly mean regional variations in wind and temperature with reanalyses and validate the modeled gravity waves using satellite- and balloon-based estimates of gravity wave momentum flux. Some interesting changes in the gravity spectrum of momentum flux are found in the model, which are discussed in terms of the interannual variations in clouds, precipitation, and large-scale winds. While regional variations in clouds, precipitation, and winds are dramatic, the mean gravity wave zonal momentum fluxes entering the stratosphere differ by only 11%. The modeled intermittency in gravity wave momentum flux is shown to be very realistic compared to observations, and the largest-amplitude waves are related to significant gravity wave drag forces in the lowermost stratosphere. This strong intermittency is generally absent or weak in climate models because of deficiencies in parameterizations of gravity wave intermittency. These results suggest a way forward to improve model representations of the lowermost stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation winds and teleconnections.

Abstract:The large scale atmospheric vortices (tropical cyclones, tornadoes) are complex physical systems combining thermodynamics and fluid-mechanical processes. The well known tendency of vorticity to self-organization, an universal property of the two-dimensional fluids, is part of the full dynamics, but its description requires particular methods. The general framework for the thermodynamical and mechanical processes is based on conservation laws while the vorticity self-organization needs a variational approach. It is difficult to estimate to what extent the vorticity self-organization (a purely kinematic process) have influenced the characteristics of the tropical cyclone at stationarity. If this influence is substantial it is expected that the stationary state of the tropical cyclone has the same nature as the vortices of many other systems in nature: ideal (Euler) fluids, superconductors, Bose - Einstein condensate, cosmic strings, etc. In previous works we have formulated a description of the $2D$ vorticity self-organization in terms of a classical field theory. The field theoretical (FT) formulation finds that the quasi-coherent form of the atmospheric vortex (tropical cyclone) at stationarity is an expression of the Self-Duality. In the present work we examine a strong property of the tropical cyclone, which arises in the FT formulation in a natural way: the equality of the masses of the particles associated to the matter field and respectively to the gauge field in the FT model is translated into the equality between the maximum radial extension of the tropical cyclone and the Rossby radius. For the cases where the FT model is a good approximation we calculate characteristic quantities of the tropical cyclone and find good comparison with observational data.

Crucial Role of Obliquely Propagating Gravity Waves in the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation Dynamics

Abstract:In climate modelling, the reality of simulated flows in the middle atmosphere is largely affected by the model's representation of gravity wave processes that are unresolved, while these processes are usually simplified to facilitate computations. The simplification commonly applied in existing climate models is to neglect wave propagation in horizontal direction and time. Here we use a model that fully represents the propagation of unresolved waves in all directions, thereby elucidating its dynamical effect upon the most important climate mode in the tropical stratosphere, namely the quasi-biennial oscillation. Our simulation shows that the waves at the equatorial stratosphere, which are known to drive this climate mode, can originate far away from the equator in the troposphere. The waves propagating obliquely toward the equator are found to play a huge role in the phase progression of the quasi-biennial oscillation as well as in its penetration into the lower stratosphere. Such waves will require further attention, given that current climate models are struggling to simulate the quasi-biennial oscillation down to the lower stratosphere, which may be needed to reproduce its observed impacts on the surface climate.

On the propagation of gravity waves in the lower solar atmosphere in different magnetic configurations

Abstract:Gravity waves are generated by turbulent subsurface convection overshooting or penetrating locally into a stably stratified medium. While propagating energy upwards, their characteristic negative phase shift over height is a well-recognized observational signature. Since their first detailed observational detection and estimates of energy content, a number of studies have explored their propagation characteristics and interaction with magnetic fields and other wave modes in the solar atmosphere. Here, we present a study of the atmospheric gravity wave dispersion diagrams utilizing intensity observations that cover photospheric to chromospheric heights over different magnetic configurations of quiet-Sun (magnetic network regions), a plage, and a sunspot as well as velocity observations within the photospheric layer over a quiet and a sunspot region. In order to investigate the propagation characteristics, we construct two-height intensity - intensity and velocity-velocity cross-spectra and study phase and coherence signals in the wavenumber-frequency dispersion diagrams and their association with background magnetic fields. We find signatures of association between magnetic fields and much reduced coherence and phase shifts over height from intensity-intensity and velocity-velocity phase and coherence diagrams, both indicating suppression/scattering of gravity waves by the magnetic fields. Our results are consistent with the earlier numerical simulations, which indicate that gravity waves are suppressed or scattered and reflected back into the lower solar atmosphere in the presence of magnetic fields.

Effects of Tropospheric Vertical Wind Shear on Gravity Waves Generated by Tropical Cyclones

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of tropospheric vertical wind shear on gravity waves generated by tropical cyclones using idealized tropical cyclone simulations with different vertical profiles of environmental zonal wind. It is found that without shear, gravity wave momentum fluxes are distributed uniformly over a broad spectral range, with fluxes in opposite directions showing symmetry. Westerly shear in the troposphere leads to asymmetry between eastward and westward momentum fluxes, resulting in net westward fluxes and a resultant westward drag forcing on the background flow in the lower stratosphere. Under westerly shear, the active momentum fluxes extend to shorter horizontal wavelengths, and contract to longer periods and slower phase speeds. In addition, clear local peaks appear at large horizontal wavelengths, long periods, and moderate phase speeds, particularly for westward momentum fluxes. Plain Language Summary Gravity wave activity is a ubiquitous atmospheric phenomenon, and tropical cyclones (TCs) are a significant source of nonstationary gravity waves in both the tropics and extratropics. Despite increased observational and simulation studies of gravity waves generated by TCs in recent years, our understanding of this issue remains inadequate and unsystematic. The vertical wind shear in the troposphere is one of the important factors that affect TCs. Here we investigate the effect vertical wind shear exerts on gravity waves generated by TCs. We perform idealized numerical simulations of TCs with different vertical profiles of environmental zonal wind, and compare gravity wave momentum fluxes generated by TCs in the lower stratosphere for different simulations. We find that westerly shear modifies wave activity in at least three aspects. First, it leads to asymmetry between eastward and westward momentum fluxes, resulting in net westward fluxes and a resultant westward drag forcing on the background flow. Abstract:The present study analyzes novel observations of vertical wind (w) in the tropical upper troposphere‐lower stratosphere obtained from a radar wind profiler in Cochin, India. Between December 2022 and April 2023, 63 consecutive 4 hr curtains of w were measured with a vertical spacing of 180 m and a sampling time step of 44 s, thus resolving almost the whole spectrum of vertical motions. Spectra of w strongly vary with altitude. They are generally flat up to the local Brunt‐Väisälä frequency (BVF), but sometimes exhibit a peak of w variance closer to BVF, a feature which may be attributed to trapped gravity waves. At other times and locations, the w profiles reveal Kelvin‐Helmholtz billows. Finally, the variability of w variance over the 4 month campaign period is investigated. Using brightness temperature from geostationary satellites as a convective proxy, it is found that w variance is highly correlated with fluctuations in convective activity.

Turbulence and equatorial waves in moist and dry shallow water systems

Abstract:Turbulence and large-scale waves in the tropical region are studied using the spherical shallow water equations. With mesoscale vorticity forcing, both moist and dry systems show kinetic energy scaling that is dominated by rotational modes, has a -5/3 exponent. At larger planetary scales, the divergent component of the energy increases and we see a footprint of tropical waves. The dry system shows a signature of the entire family of equatorial waves, while the moist simulations only show low frequency Rossby, Kelvin and mixed Rossby gravity waves with an equivalent depth that matches rapid condensation estimates. Further, runs with interactive moisture exhibit spontaneous aggregation with the equilibrium moist energy spectrum obeying a -2 power-law. Synoptic scale moisture anomalies form in heterogeneous background saturation, and are sustained by advection and convergence, within rotational gyres that dominate the tropical region. In that case, along with equatorial waves and turbulence, a large-scale eastward moving moisture wave appears in the midlatitudes. In all simulations with upscale energy transfer, a systematic equatorial zonal mean zonal flow develops which is easterly and westerly for the dry and moist ensembles, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://respectively.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> interaction of this zonal mean flow with a spatially heterogeneous saturation field results in the formation of a moist stationary tropical wave. The super-rotating flow is driven by rotational eddy momentum fluxes due to enhanced equatorial Rossby wave activity in the moist runs. The nature of eddies is such that the tropical circulation in the dry and moist cases tends to homogenize and exaggerate potential vorticity gradients, respectively. These experiments demonstrate the co-existence of tropical waves and turbulence, and highlight the fact that the vortical and divergent wind are inextricably linked with the evolving moisture field.

Impacts of Gravity Waves on the Thermospheric Circulation and Composition

Abstract:The high‐resolution Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere/ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) is used to study the impacts of gravity waves (GWs) on the thermospheric circulation and composition. The resolved GWs are found to propagate anisotropically with stronger eastward components at most altitudes. The dissipation of these waves in the thermosphere produces a net eastward forcing that reaches peak values between 200 and 250 km at mid‐high latitudes in both hemispheres. Consequently, the mean circulation is weakened in the winter hemisphere and enhanced in the summer, which in turn impacts the thermospheric composition. Most notably, the column integrated O/N2 in both hemispheres is reduced and agrees better with observations. The mean thermospheric GW forcing in the meridional direction has comparable amplitude and acts to modify the gradient‐wind relationship.

Abstract:We examine the evolution of three-gravity-wave interactions, with one initially much stronger than the other two, in a dissipative atmosphere. The characteristic time is used as an essential time scale for depicting the interactions. In the absence of viscosity, the solutions of the linearized interaction equations, viz., the parametric instability, give a good description for the evolution of secondary waves up to one-half of the characteristic time. Beyond this time, the linear solutions are invalid; the evolution must be obtained by solving the complete interaction equations. For given initial wave amplitudes, the characteristic time increases with the increasing wavelength of the primary wave; thus the criterion for the validity of resonant interaction approximation may be better satisfied. The viscous dissipation makes the characteristic time larger, and when severe enough a portion of the secondary waves, particularly at high wavenumbers, may fail to interact with the primary wave effectively. Additionally, the maxima of the energy densities for the secondary waves are smaller than those in the absence of viscosity. In the case of a significant frequency mismatch, only a fraction of the primary wave energy takes part in the interchange.

Abstract:Abstract A new version of NCAR Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere/ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) has been developed. The main feature of this version is the species‐dependent spectral element (SE) dynamical core solved on a cubed sphere grid, eliminating the polar singularity and enabling simulations at high‐resolutions. Molecular viscosity and diffusion in the horizontal direction are also included. The Conservative Semi‐Lagrangian Multi‐Tracer Transport Scheme (CSLAM) is employed for the species transport. An efficient regridding scheme based on the Earth System Modeling Framework is used to map fields between the physics mesh and geomagnetic grid. Simulations have been performed at coarse (∼200 km and 0.25 scale height) and high (∼25 km and 0.1 scale height) resolutions. Spatial distribution of the resolved gravity waves from the high‐resolution simulations compares well with available observations in the middle and upper atmosphere. Analysis of the scale dependence of the gravity wave energy density and momentum flux shows that, while larger scale waves are dominant energetically at most latitudes, smaller scale waves contribute significantly to the total momentum flux, especially at mid‐high latitudes. The waves in the thermosphere are shown to be strongly modulated by the large‐scale wind through Doppler shift and molecular damping, and they cause large neutral atmosphere and plasma perturbations.

Abstract:Tropical cyclones are one of the potential sources of gravity waves, which can transport energy and momentum to higher heights through their vertical propagation and interaction with the background flow and thereby influence the dynamics of the upper atmosphere. High-resolution wind data acquired by the Medium Frequency (MF) radar at Kolhapur (16.69°N, 74.24°E) are utilized to study the high frequency gravity waves (20–60 min) associated with the tropical cyclone named "Vayu" formed in the Indian Arabian Sea in June 2019. An enhancement of the gravity wave (GW) activities in the meridional wind is observed during 13–15 June 2019. The source of the gravity wave is the tropical Vayu cyclone of category 2 storm. We employed the gravity wave variance data from NASA's Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) satellite for our analysis over stratospheric heights. The enhancement of gravity wave variance in both the stratosphere mesosphere heights and the low values of OLR indicate the strong convection associated with cyclone, the source of observed gravity waves. In the present study we analyzed the horizontal propagation direction of the cyclone generated gravity waves using perturbation ellipse, it is found to be in the north–south plane. The temperature profiles obtained from the SABER instrument on board TIMED satellite indicate the presence of mesospheric inversion layer with an amplitude of nearly 40 K on the day of large gravity wave variance (June 13, 2019). These results indicate the cyclone can generate gravity waves which can propagate to higher heights and modify the MLT thermal structure, providing evidence for the vertical coupling between lower and upper atmosphere.

A Survey on Gravity Waves in the Brazilian Sector Based on Radiosonde Measurements From 32 Aerodromes

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we applied a variety of statistical methods to study gravity waves in the troposphere and lower stratosphere in the Brazilian sector, using a large database from Instituto de Controle do Espaço Aéreo (ICEA) of radiosonde measurements carried out in 2014 at 32 locations in the Brazilian territory totaling 49,652 wind and temperature profiles. The average wind profiles were computed and classified by means of a hierarchical cluster analysis. The kinetic and potential energy densities of gravity waves were determined using a detrending technique based on the Least Squares Method and the Fast Fourier Transform. By analyzing the energy density time series it was found that tropospheric average values are consistently larger in the months of winter, late autumn and early spring. Stratospheric average values of variability and kinetic energy density are also consistently larger in this period. A systematic search for quasi monochromatic waves was carried out and their main characteristics such as horizontal/vertical wavelengths and velocities were determined both in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. A correlation analysis between the troposphere and the lower stratosphere based on the measured parameters was used to investigate the wave coupling between the two layers, and no significant correlation was found. Finally, a spatial correlation analysis between energy densities measured at different aerodromes in the same atmospheric layer was carried out, showing that energy densities are spatially correlated for distances less than 3,000–4,000 km.

Abstract:Dong et al. (2020, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019JD030691) employed a new compressible model to examine gravity wave (GW) self-acceleration dynamics, instabilities, secondary gravity wave (SGW) generation, and mean forcing for GW packets localized in two dimensions (2D). This paper extends the exploration of self-acceleration dynamics to a GW packet localized in three dimensions (3D) propagating into tidal winds in the mesosphere and thermosphere. As in the 2D packet responses, 3D GW self-acceleration dynamics are found to be significant and include 3D GW phase distortions, stalled GW vertical propagation, local instabilities, and SGW and acoustic wave generation. Additional 3D responses described here include refraction by tidal winds, localized 3D instabilities, asymmetric SGW propagation, reduced SGW and acoustic wave responses at higher altitudes relative to 2D responses, and forcing of transient, large-scale, 3D mean responses that may have implications for chemical and microphysical processes operating on longer time scales.
Global analysis for periodic variations of gravity wave squared amplitudes and momentum fluxes in the middle atmosphere

Abstract:Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) are an important coupling mechanism in the middle atmosphere. For instance, they provide a large part of the driving of long-period atmospheric oscillations such as the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and the semiannual oscillation (SAO) and are in turn modulated. They also induce the wind reversal in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere region (MLT) and the residual mean circulation at these altitudes. In this study, the variations in monthly zonal mean gravity wave square temperature amplitudes (GWSTAs) and, for the first time, absolute gravity wave momentum flux (GWMF) on different timescales such as the annual, semiannual, terannual and quasi-biennial variations are investigated by spectrally analyzing SABER observations from 2002 to 2015. Latitudealtitude cross sections of spectral amplitudes and phases of GWSTA and absolute GWMF in the stratosphere and mesosphere are presented and physically interpreted. It is shown that the time series of GWSTA and GWMF at a certain altitude and latitude results from the complex interplay of GW sources, propagation through and filtering in lower altitudes, oblique propagation superposing GWs from different source locations, and, finally, the modulation of the GW spectrum by the winds at a considered altitude and latitude. The strongest component is the annual variation, dominated in the summer hemisphere by subtropical convective sources and in the winter hemisphere by polar vortex dynamics. At heights of the wind reversal, a 180 degrees phase shift also occurs, which is at different altitudes for GWSTA and GWMF. In the intermediate latitudes a semiannual variation (SAV) is found. Dedicated GW modeling is used to investigate the nature of this SAV, which is a different phenomenon from the tropical SAO also seen in the data. In the tropics a stratospheric and a mesospheric QBO are found, which are, as expected, in antiphase. Indication for a QBO influence is also found at higher latitudes. In previous studies a terannual variation (TAV) was identified. In the current study we explain its origin. In particular the observed patterns for the shorter periods, SAV and TAV, can only be explained by poleward propagation of GWs from the lower-stratosphere subtropics into the midlatitude and high-latitude mesosphere. In this way, critical wind filtering in the lowermost stratosphere is avoided and this oblique propagation is hence likely an important factor for MLT dynamics.
