Seasonal and Nodal Variations of Predominant Tidal Constituents in the Global Ocean

Abstract:Tides are one of the basic types of ocean water motions. Previous studies have reported that the M-2 constituent exhibits seasonal variations (annual cycles) in some regions. However, based on the newly proposed method of modified two-step harmonic analysis (HA) and its application at 240 global tide gauges, we find that the M-2 constituent as well as the S-2 and K-1 do not have significant seasonal variations at these tide gauges. The seasonal variations of the M-2 constituent reported in previous studies are caused by its satellites, the H-1 and H-2 constituents, which are not resolved in these studies due to the short time window (one month or three months) used in HA. Because the frequency of the H-1 (H-2) constituent is equal to that of the M-2 minus (plus) the frequency of annual cycles, the superposition of the M-2, H-1 and H-2 constituents with constant amplitudes is equivalent to the M-2 constituent with seasonally varying amplitudes. Compared with the new method, some adaptations to traditional HA aiming to capture variations in amplitudes and phase lags of constituents have some limitations, because they either neglect some satellites of the major constitutes or introduce spurious fluctuations resulting from an unreasonably large number of independent points. The nodal modulations of predominant constituents are also explored in this study. On the global scale, the nodal modulations of the M-2, K-1 and O-1 constituents agree with the theoretical predictions, except a cold spot region with reduced nodal modulation in the Gulf of Maine and a hot spot region with enhanced nodal modulation in the South China Sea for the M-2. Nodal modulation is also found for the S-2 constituent (in theory, the S-2 has no nodal modulation), which is 0.8% averaged at 164 tide gauges where the S-2 is not too weak.

The Longitudinal Variations of Upper Thermospheric Zonal Winds Observed by the CHAMP Satellite at Low and Midlatitudes

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the longitudinal patterns of thermospheric zonal winds (~400 km) and their seasonal and solar activity dependence using CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload cross‐track wind data and Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) simulations. CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload data show that there are large longitudinal variations in thermospheric zonal winds. These longitudinal variations do not have significant solar activity dependence. In the northern hemisphere at low and middle latitudes, the daytime zonal winds are more westward between −90° and 90° longitudes and more eastward at other longitudes. The nighttime zonal wind direction with pattern is opposite to that in the daytime. In the southern hemisphere at low and middle latitudes, the local time variation of the longitudinal wind structure, including positive and negative peak locations, is almost the reverse of that in the northern hemisphere. Thus, the zonal wind patterns also show great hemispheric asymmetry. In addition, the longitudinal patterns of zonal winds in both hemispheres show seasonal variations. The longitudinal patterns during the June solstice are significantly different from those in other seasons. These observational results are well reproduced in TIEGCM simulations. To elucidate the physical processes responsible for the observed and simulated longitudinal patterns of the zonal winds, the TIEGCM is also run for different geomagnetic field configurations. A comparison between the TIEGCM results shows that geomagnetic field structure is the main cause of the large longitudinal variations of thermospheric zonal winds and their local time, hemispheric asymmetry, and seasonal changes at low and middle latitudes.

Abstract:By using atmospheric wind data in the mesopause and lower thermosphere (MLT) region, features of seasonal variations in the quasi-6-day wave (6DW) at different latitudes are analyzed, and modulation of the 6DW by the diurnal tide and solar 27-day period isdiscussed. The data used in the analysis are extracted from a wind dataset collected by a meteor radar chain from December 2008 to November 2017. The meteor radar chain includes four stations, in Mohe, Beijing, Wuhan, and Sanya. Features of seasonal variations in the 6DW indicate that in summer the 6DW is usually strongest during July and August, followed by stronger variations in January and April. At certain altitudes over Wuhan and Sanya, the 6DW is slightly different in different years and altitudes. In our analysis of seasonal variations in the 6DW, we find that it is generally affected by annual oscillations and semiannual oscillations. The annual oscillations of the 6DW in the mid-low latitudes are modulated by the quasibiennial oscillation in the diurnal tide, resulting in seasonal features that are different from those at other latitudes. In addition, the 6DW amplitude at mid-high latitudes has a significant 27-day solar rotation variation, which was prominent in 2016.

Abstract:The sources for the variabilities of the ionospheric tidal oscillations are complex and not totally understood yet. In this paper, both the seasonal and short-term variations of the ionospheric diurnal and semidiurnal oscillations over a meteor radar chain (Wuhan [114.4 degrees E, 30.6 degrees N], Beijing [116.5 degrees E, 39.9 degrees N], and Mohe [121.1 degrees E, 50.1 degrees N]) are investigated with critical frequency of the F2 layer (foF2) observations during 2014. The collocated mesospheric horizontal winds, the daily 10.7-cm solar flux, and the daily Ap index are also examined to determine the sources of the ionospheric tidal variabilities from the lower atmosphere, solar and geomagnetic activities, respectively. We found that the seasonal variations of the ionospheric tidal oscillations at the three sites are consistent, which are not in-phase with the seasonal variations of mesospheric tides at the same location. This indicates that mesospheric tides are unlikely the main cause of the seasonal variations of the ionospheric tides. Besides, the ionospheric tidal oscillations show clear periodical signals, which could correspond well with those in the local mesospheric wind or Ap index. Nevertheless, the periodical solar flux oscillation does not induce similar short-term ionospheric tidal variabilities. We also found that the influence of geomagnetic activities on the ionospheric tidal variabilities is with either enhancement or depression patterns during geomagnetic storms.

Abstract:In this study, the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics Global Circulation Model and the extended Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model are utilized to investigate the seasonal variations of the upward propagation of the migrating terdiurnal tide from the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Three main conclusions are drawn from a series of controlled simulations: (1) The background thermospheric zonal and meridional winds and neutral temperature can affect the upward propagation of the terdiurnal tide. (2) The background zonal winds can play an important role in the variation of the vertical advection and adiabatic cooling/heating, especially in the low thermosphere, and as a consequence, the upward propagation of the terdiurnal tide is modulated. (3) The terdiurnal tide in the MLT has influences not only on the latitudinal distributions and magnitudes of the terdiurnal tide in the upper thermosphere but also on the effect of the background winds on the upward propagation of the terdiurnal tide.

Abstract:Abstract. Long-term and continuous observations of mesospheric–lower thermospheric winds are rare, but they are important to investigate climatological changes at these altitudes on timescales of several years, covering a solar cycle and longer. Such long time series are a natural heritage of the mesosphere–lower thermosphere climate, and they are valuable to compare climate models or long-term runs of general circulation models (GCMs). Here we present a climatological comparison of wind observations from six meteor radars at two conjugate latitudes to validate the corresponding mean winds and atmospheric diurnal and semidiurnal tides from three GCMs, namely the Ground-to-Topside Model of Atmosphere and Ionosphere for Aeronomy (GAIA), the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Extension (Specified Dynamics) (WACCM-X(SD)), and the Upper Atmosphere ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic (UA-ICON) model. Our results indicate that there are interhemispheric differences in the seasonal characteristics of the diurnal and semidiurnal tide. There are also some differences in the mean wind climatologies of the models and the observations. Our results indicate that GAIA shows reasonable agreement with the meteor radar observations during the winter season, whereas WACCM-X(SD) shows better agreement with the radars for the hemispheric zonal summer wind reversal, which is more consistent with the meteor radar observations. The free-running UA-ICON tends to show similar winds and tides compared to WACCM-X(SD).

Abstract:The neutral winds in the mesospheric and lower thermospheric region obtained from a meteor radar chain within the latitudinal range of 18–53°N were decomposed to examine the latitudinal structures of the tides and mean winds during the sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event in 2013. The zonal wind reversed from eastward to westward and the westward wind was larger at middle latitudes than that at low latitudes during the SSW. Meanwhile, a sharp increase in the northward wind was noticeable at all stations. The amplitudes of the diurnal and semidiurnal tides decreased from 5 to 13 January and increased subsequently. At the same time, the terdiurnal tides increased in amplitude, especially at Beijing, Wuhan, and Kunming, in response to the SSW. Moreover, the tidal phases showed a large shift that corresponded to a great increase in tidal wavelengths in the semidiurnal and terdiurnal components. The wavelet analysis further revealed that the quasi 6‐day wave oscillations dominated in the winds at Kunming and Sanya stations, as well as the quasi 16‐day wave dominated in the zonal wind, and the quasi 11‐day and 16‐day waves were prevailing in the meridional winds at Beijing and Wuhan. In the same vein, the quasi 16‐day and quasi 11‐day waves were prominent in the zonal and meridional winds during 1–18 January at Mohe. Therefore, the tide‐planetary wave interactions played a significant role in modulating the behaviors of the mesospheric and lower thermospheric dynamics during the SSW event.
Global Structure and Seasonal Variations of the Tidal Amplitude in Sporadic‐E Layer

Abstract:The Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate radio occultation S4 indices measurements are used to investigate the global structure and seasonal variations of tidal components in the sporadic-E (Es) layer. The diurnal tidal amplitude in the Es layer intensity and occurrence rate shows a wave-4 longitudinal structure, which is due to the diurnal tidal components of zonal wave numbers s = -3 (eastward, DE3). The wave-4 longitudinal pattern is also observed in the semidiurnal tide during spring and winter, which mostly results from the combination of semidiurnal components of zonal wave numbers s = -2 (eastward, SE2), s = 2 (westward, SW2). In addition, the semidiurnal tidal amplitude in Es layers presents obvious seasonal variability, and it dominates in the northern hemisphere during spring and summer and in the southern hemisphere during autumn and winter. Furthermore, the total semidiurnal tidal amplitude in Es layers in the northern hemisphere is greater than that in the southern hemisphere. Another important finding is that the diurnal tidal pattern at the lower altitude (below 102 km) Es layer is different from that of the higher altitude (above 102 km) Es layer and is also different from that of wind, which supports that the wind shear theory is inapplicable for the Es layer formation at low altitude proposed by many researchers.
A Comparison of Quiet Time Thermospheric Winds Between FPI Observations and Model Calculations

Abstract:We investigate local time, seasonal, and longitudinal variations of thermospheric horizontal winds at midlatitudes during geomagnetically quiet times by comparing winds from observations, an empirical wind model, and a numerical model. The observations are from three Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs), the empirical model is the most recent version of the Horizontal Wind Model 14 (HWM14), and the numerical model is the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The three FPI stations are located at Xinglong (geographically 40.2 degrees N, 117.4 degrees E; geomagnetically 35 degrees N) and Kelan (geographically 38.7 degrees N, 111.6 degrees E; geomagnetically 34 degrees N) in China and at Millstone Hill (geographically 42.6 degrees N, 71.5 degrees W; geomagnetically 52 degrees N) in United States. The results show that the winds at Millstone Hill are more southward and more westward than those at Xinglong and Kelan in all seasons; the directional reversal time of zonal winds is also earlier at Millstone Hill than at the other two stations. Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model shows better agreement with FPI observations in the winter months compared to summer, and in general best replicates those measurements taken at Millstone Hill. HWM14 generally produces agreement with quiet time midlatitude neutral wind measurements, with HWM14 meridional winds comparing very well throughout most of a year. HWM14 model-data discrepancies occur mainly in the zonal winds during the winter season. Overall, HWM14 predicts MH FPI observations slightly better than it does for the data from the two Asian stations. Plain Language Summary The characteristics of Fabry-Perot interferometer nighttime thermospheric wind during geomagnetically quiet times at three midlatitude stations are studied. Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model shows better agreement with Fabry-Perot interferometer observations in the winter months compared to summer, and in general best replicates those measurements taken at Millstone Hill. The Midlatitude Thermospheric Dynamics from an Interhemispheric Perspective

Abstract:Using Fabry‐Perot interferometers at five midlatitude stations (Boulder, Palmer, Millstone Hill, Mount John, and Kelan) in both hemispheres, we examine the interhemispheric and seasonal variations of midlatitude thermospheric dynamics. We also use the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) to simulate the seasonal changes of winds and the effects from Sub‐Auroral Polarization Streams. The observations and TIEGCM simulations show a clear seasonal variation with more westward and equatorward summer winds. The TIEGCM runs overestimate the westward zonal winds and underestimate the electron densities in the northern summer. We believe that the underestimated TIEGCM electron density leads to a weak ion drag effect in the model, and strong westward zonal winds. TIEGCM overestimates the Sub‐Auroral Polarization Stream effects on neutral winds in most cases, probably because the empirical Sub‐Auroral Polarization Stream model used by the TIEGCM applies an unrealistic persistent electric field for a long period of time (over 3 hr) due to the low temporal resolution of the Kp index.
Effect of Background Wind and Dissipation Processes on the Semidiurnal Component of Atmospheric Solar Tides

Abstract:The equations governing the neutral wind velocities and temperature, which depict the oscillations of atmospheric tides, incorporate various elements of the atmosphere. These factors comprise background wind, temperature profiles, and the atmosphere's composition, including ozone, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, etc. The current work describes the method of solution of the atmospheric tidal model and investigates the effects of background wind and dissipation processes on the migrating semidiurnal tides during the March equinox. Thermal heating due to water vapour absorption in the troposphere, ozone in the stratosphere and oxygen absorption in the thermosphere is considered in this model. Furthermore, the model takes into account the various dissipation processes (i.e. ion drag and Hall coefficients, Newtonian cooling, divergence of momentum and heat fluxes due to molecular and eddy diffusion) and background wind. The semidiurnal tidal features obtained from the present model match well with the Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM-98). The bar charts are presented to quantify the effects of different parameters on horizontal winds for altitudes below 100 km and above 100 km, separately. It reveals that the background wind plays a vital role in deciding the semidiurnal tidal amplitudes of zonal and meridional winds. Momentum and heat flux coefficients also have a significant influence on semidiurnal tides. At higher altitudes (> 100 km), the ion drag reduces the amplitude of semidiurnal tides considerably.

Abstract:Accurate knowledge of mesospheric winds and waves is essential for studying the dynamics and climate in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of the mesosphere tidal results obtained from these two adjacent meteor radars at low latitudes in Kunming, China from November 2013 to December 2014 were analyzed and compared. These two radars operate at different frequencies of 37.5 MHz and 53.1 MHz, respectively. However, an overall good agreement was observed between the two radars in terms of horizontal winds and tide observations. The results showed that the dominant tidal waves of the zonal and meridional winds are diurnal and semidiurnal tides. Moreover, we conducted an exhaustive statistical analysis to compare the tidal amplitudes and vertical wavelengths recorded by the dual radar systems, which revealed a high degree of alignment in tidal dynamics. The investigation included variances and covariances of tidal amplitudes, which demonstrated remarkable consistency across measurements from both radars. This finding highlights a clear uniformity in the mesospheric tidal patterns observed at low latitudes by the two neighboring meteor radars. The comparative analysis specifically underscores the significant correlation in vertical wavelength measurements, validating the robustness of radar observations for tidal research.

Abstract:Thermospheric mass densities from the GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) satellite for Sun-synchronous orbits between 83.5 degrees S and 83.5 degrees N, normalized to 270 km during 2009-2013, have been used to develop an empirical mass density model at dawn/dusk local solar time (LST) sectors based on the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) method. The main results of this study are that (1) the dawn densities peak in the polar regions, but the dusk densities maximize in the equatorial regions; (2) the relative seasonal variations to the annual mean have similar patterns across all latitudes regardless of solar activity conditions; (3) the seasonal density variations show obvious hemispheric asymmetry, with large amplitudes in the Southern Hemisphere; (4) both amplitude and phase of the seasonal variations have strong latitudinal and solar activity dependences, with high amplitude for the annual variation at higher latitudes and semiannual variation at lower latitudes; (5) the annual asymmetry and effect of the Sun-Earth distance vary with latitude and solar activity.

Abstract:Utilizing atmospheric temperature observed from Mars Years 33–36 by the imaging ultraviolet spectrograph (IUVS) onboard the Mars atmosphere and volatile evolution (MAVEN) and Mars climate sounder (MCS) onboard Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), we derive the diurnal and semidiurnal thermal tides from 30 to 160 km. Vertical phase velocities of the migrating tides indicate their upward propagation above 100 km during the dust season (solar longitude, Ls 240°–300°). During the non‐dust season (Ls 30°–150°), the diurnal eastward wavenumber 2 (DE2) and wavenumber 3 (DE3) tides can propagate upward from the lower atmosphere to ∼140 km. The seasonal variation of DE2 and DE3 amplitudes in the thermosphere corresponds well to their counterparts in the lower atmosphere, primarily controlled by their Hough (1, 1) modes. The upward propagation of these tides could potentially impact the vertical coupling between the Martian lower and upper atmosphere.

Perturbations of Global Wave Dynamics During Stratospheric Warming Events of the Solar Cycle 24

Abstract:<p>The paper presents analysis and interpretation of observed perturbations of global wave dynamics in the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM) during the recent mid-winter Arctic Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events under solar minimum (2009, 2010, 2018, and 2019), transition to solar maximum (2012) and solar maximum (2013) conditions of the Solar Cycle 24. Employing the 116-level configuration of the thermosphere extension of Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCMX-116L), constrained by the meteorological troposphere-stratosphere analyses of Goddard Earth Observing System, version 5 (GEOS-5) of Global Modeling and Data Assimilation Office, we study and characterize the striking amplifications of the solar thermal semidiurnal tide, as one of the main drivers of the ITM variability, after onsets of major and minor SSW events. The dominance and growth of the semidiurnal tide over the diurnal and terdiurnal modes in the lower thermosphere above ~100 km are typical features of the tidal dynamics during major SSW events of the Solar Cycle 24 as suggested by model predictions. The growth of the semidiurnal tidal mode during SSW events is also supported by observational analysis of diurnal cycles from temperature space-borne observations (SABER/TIMED). In the vertical domain of the meteor radar observations at the Southern extra-tropics and low latitudes the model and data revealed the systematic presence of the strong quasi two-day wave wind oscillations that prevail over the tidal winds between 80 and 100 km during mid-January SSW events. In the high and middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere model simulations are capable to reproduce the day-to-day variability of tidal and PW oscillations deduced from satellite temperature data. The self-consistent whole atmosphere predictions of global-scale components of neutral dynamics (prevailing winds, planetary waves and tides) become important factor to reproduce and forecast the perturbed state of the ITM as observed from the ground and the space during SSW events of the Solar Cycle 24. The SSW-driven global perturbations of tides can significantly change diurnal cycles of the plasma in the low-latitude and extra-tropical E-region of the ionosphere as will be briefly illustrated by day-day variations of observed and simulated total electron content and plasma drifts.</p>
