Abstract:ΣO/N2 ratios in the Earth's thermosphere are measured by the Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) on the TIMED satellite, and demonstrate strong 9 and 7 day oscillations in 2005 and 2006, respectively, that are well correlated with the solar wind speed and Kp index. This work builds on the recently discovered connection between rotating solar coronal holes and thermospheric mass density variations. The work described here is the first description of geomagnetically forced periodicities in neutral composition. Furthermore, these observations provide the first definitive proof that the processes creating neutral composition changes during geomagnetic storms occur continuously at all activity levels and all over the world. The ΣO/N2 response versus the mass density response indicates the important role of vertical winds at high latitudes while thermal expansion dominates at lower latitudes.

Abstract:Thermospheric response to Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) has been studied previously; however, its solar cycle and seasonal effects have not been fully investigated. Thermospheric mass density at 400 km measured by the CHAMP satellite during 2001-2008 and Sigma O/N2 from the TIMED/GUVI instrument covering a period from 2002 to 2008 are used to investigate the solar cycle and seasonal dependencies of the thermospheric response to CIRs. Our results reveal: (1) solar minimum CIRs compared to solar maximum counterparts have larger solar wind speeds before and after the stream interface. However, solar wind dynamic pressure and merging electric field are slightly larger at solar maximum than solar minimum. (2) CIR-induced variations of Sigma O/N2 are characterized by high latitude depression and low latitude enhancement, a distinction from global enhancement of neutral density at a fixed altitude. These relative thermospheric changes are dependent on solar cycle, with a more pronounced increase in neutral density at all latitudes and a stronger decrease in Sigma O/N2 at high latitude at solar minimum than at solar maximum. (3) A seasonal asymmetry is presented in the relative deviations of thermospheric mass density and composition. On the dayside, the peak increases of neutral density at high latitudes on average are similar to 40% in the summer hemisphere and similar to 26% in the winter hemisphere. Nighttime neutral density changes are more remarkable than that in the same latitudinal bands of daytime and have the same seasonal preference of enhancement as the dayside. At the daytime, Sigma O/N2 at high latitudes suffers more reduction in the summer hemisphere than in the winter hemisphere. At middle latitudes, Sigma O/N2 reduces in the winter hemisphere; nevertheless, it increases slightly in the summer hemisphere.

Abstract:Thermospheric composition (O/N2 ratio) is well known to have a great impact on the variation of daytime ionospheric electron density. This study aims to investigate the local time, seasonal, and solar cycle variations of the O/N2 longitudinal pattern in both hemispheres during daytime in solstices. The O/N-2 data used are from TIMED/Global Ultraviolet Imager observations made over a solar cycle for geomagnetically quiet conditions. The main findings are as follows:(1) The O/N-2 longitudinal patterns are generally similar during 10:00-14:00 LT and between solar minimum and maximum, although the O/N-2 values change with local time and solar cycle. (2) The winter O/N-2 subauroral enhancement is unexpectedly smaller in the longitudeswhere the magnetic pole is (near-pole longitudes), rather than in the longitudes far from the magnetic pole, especially during solar maximum, and consequently, the longitudinal pattern of O/N-2 depends on latitude in local winter. (3) The winter O/N-2 subauroral enhancement generally moves to more poleward latitudes during solar maximum, as compared to solar minimum. (4) At higher midlatitudes (similar to 45 degrees -60 degrees N and similar to 40 degrees-50 degrees S in geographic latitudes) in solar minimum, the winter-to-summer ratio of O/N-2 in each hemisphere has an obvious minimum in near-pole longitudes. This minimum becomes more evident during solar maximum. The National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model simulations indicate that in the winter hemisphere, the unexpected O/N-2 longitudinal pattern in higher midlatitudes is mainly associated with high-latitude Joule heating under the impact from ion convection and auroral precipitation.

The increase of O/N-2 with solar activity is dominated by the enrichment of O abundance and the loss of N-2 abundance in the lower and upper thermosphere, respectively. Moreover, the simulation results suggested that the stronger hemispheric asymmetry is attributed to the stronger thermospheric circulation, which changes the vertical advection of O/N-2 through both direct and indirect effects.

Abstract:Abstract The ratio of O to N 2 number densities (O/N 2 ) at different altitudes is an important parameter in describing thermospheric neutral composition changes and their effects on the ionosphere during geomagnetic storms. However, storm‐induced vertical variations in O/N 2 and its dependence on the O and N 2 perturbations are still not fully understood. Here, the Thermosphere/Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model simulations were used to investigate the responses of thermospheric composition at different pressure levels to the super geomagnetic storm occurred on November 20 and 21 in 2003. Our analysis shows that the behaviors of O/N 2 perturbations on different pressure levels are similar above ∼180 km altitude. In the middle and low thermosphere of below ∼300 km, the storm‐time O/N 2 decrease is mainly caused by a large reduction of O number density. However, N 2 enhancement plays a vital role in O/N 2 decreases in the upper thermosphere. The O/N 2 enhancement is mainly attributed to the N 2 decreases at all pressure levels. The changes of O and N 2 number densities at a constant pressure level can be explained by the perturbations of their mass mixing ratio (mmr) and total mass density ( ρ ). The regions of the O/N 2 decrease are characterized by the O mmr decrease and N 2 mmr enhancement, whereas the regions of the O/N 2 increase are characterized by the O mmr increase and N 2 mmr decrease. The ρ value that shows the decrease globally at most pressure levels during the storm either enhance or reduce the O and N 2 perturbations.

First Observation of Mesosphere Response to the Geomagnetic Forcing

Abstract:We present a first observation and analysis of 13.5, 9 and 6.75-day periodic oscillations observed in the neutral mesosphere density in the declining phase of solar cycle 23 and 24. Mesospheric densities near 90 km are derived using data from the Davis meteor radar (68.5°S, 77.9°E), Antarctica. Spectral analysis indicates that the pronounced periodicities of 13.5, 9 and 6.75 days observed in the mesosphere densities are associated with variations in solar wind high-speed streams and recurrent geomagnetic activities. A Morlet wavelet analysis shows that the time evolution of the 13.5, 9- and 6.75-day oscillations in the neutral mesosphere densities are similar to those in the solar wind and in planetary magnetic activity index, Kp. These results demonstrate a direct coupling between the upper atmosphere (corona) of the Sun and the Earth’s mesosphere.

Abstract:The solar wind continuously transfers energy into the Earth’s thermosphere-ionosphere system and variations in the solar wind properties modify the state of the system. The modifications are best visible during storm conditions when the ingestion of extreme amounts of solar wind energy into the thermosphere-ionosphere system causes global changes in thermosphere as well as large deviations in the ionospheric electron density from its quiet conditions. This study shows that there exists a persistent impact of the solar wind on the high-latitude electron density. A data set of 22 years of Total Electron Content (TEC) and 15 years of ionosonde data (critical frequency foF2 and height of maximum electron density hmF2) at Tromsø (70°N, 19°E) are used for correlation analyses with different solar wind parameters derived from measurements of the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). The results show that the ionospheric parameters systematically respond with an increase or decrease depending on local time, season and solar cycle. TEC and foF2 increase with solar wind energy during winter night conditions and decrease with increasing solar wind energy during summer daytime. The summer negative ionospheric response is more intense during solar maximum conditions, while the winter positive ionospheric response is stronger during solar minimum. An anomaly is observed around 10 UT (noon), when TEC and foF2 respond with an increase during solar minimum conditions. Cross polar cap plasma convection, particle precipitation and Joule heating are considered to be the main drivers of the electron density changes at Tromsø. Local time, season and solar cycle changes in the background ionosphere-thermosphere conditions lead to different effects of theses driving processes. The results help to better understand the variability of the high-latitude electron density and show that solar wind forcing causes a systematic and persistent response of the ionosphere which alternates depending on local time, season and solar cycle.

Atmospheric odd nitrogen response to electron forcing from a 6D magnetospheric hybrid-kinetic simulation

Abstract:Modelling the distribution of odd nitrogen (NO x ) in the polar middle and upper atmosphere has proven to be a complex task. Firstly, its production by energetic electron precipitation is highly variable on hourly time scales. Secondly, there are uncertainties in the measurement-based but simplified electron flux data sets that are currently used in atmosphere and climate models. The altitude distribution of NO x is strongly affected by atmospheric dynamics also on monthly time scales, particularly in the polar winter periods when the isolated air inside the polar vortex descends from lower thermosphere to mesosphere and stratosphere. Recent comparisons between measurements and simulations have revealed strong differences in the NO x distribution, with questions remaining about the representation of both production and transport in models. Here we present for the first time a novel approach, where the electron atmospheric forcing in the auroral energy range (50 eV–50 keV) is derived from a magnetospheric hybrid-kinetic simulation with a detailed description of energy range and resolution, and spatial and diurnal distribution. These electron data are used as input in a global whole atmosphere model to study the impact on polar NO x and ozone. We will show that the magnetospheric electron data provides a realistic representation of the forcing which leads to considerable impact in the lower thermosphere, mesosphere and stratosphere. We find that during the polar winter the simulated auroral electron precipitation increases the polar NO x concentrations up to 200 %, 50 %, and 7 % in the lower thermosphere, mesosphere, and upper stratosphere, respectively, when compared to no auroral electron forcing in the atmospheric model. These results demonstrate the potential of combining magnetospheric and atmospheric simulations for detailed studies of solar wind – atmosphere coupling.

Thermospheric Density Oscillations Due to Periodic Solar Wind Highspeed Streams

Abstract:We report on periodic oscillations in thermosphere density, measured by the accelerometer on the CHAMP satellite during 2006, and relate these periodicities to oscillations observed in solar wind speed and Kp index. Common periodic oscillations at 4–5, 6–7, and 9–11 day periods are observed in the neutral density at 400 km in the 2006 data set, with the 7 day period being the predominant oscillation. Spectral analysis reveals that similar periodicities are present in both the solar wind and the planetary magnetic index Kp but not in the EUV solar flux proxy F10.7. We suggest that the periodic oscillations observed in thermosphere density are a direct response to recurrent geomagnetic activity and associated high‐speed streams in the solar wind. The lack of response in F10.7 at the 7 day period enables storm effects on the thermosphere density to be isolated from solar flux effects. The Kp index for these events correspond to moderate levels of geomagnetic activity, and the resultant perturbations in thermosphere density are ±20–30% of background levels. Although these levels of perturbation are small compared to major magnetic storms, their much higher occurrence frequency and characteristic long recovery time may lead to a cumulative effect on the state of the thermosphere and ionosphere.

Abstract:We present 9‐ and 7‐day periodic oscillations in the global mean Total Electron Content (TEC) from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2006. Spectral analysis indicates that the pronounced periodicities of 9 and 7 days observed in TEC are associated with variations in solar wind high‐speed streams and geomagnetic activity. Neutral temperature and winds near 250 km, measured by a Fabry‐Perot Interferometer at Resolute Bay, also exhibit 9‐ and 7‐day periodicities. These pronounced periodicities support simultaneous observations of 9‐ and 7‐day periodicities in thermosphere neutral density (Lei et al., 2008a; Thayer et al., 2008). It is anticipated that the ionospheric response at 9 and 7 days represents some combination of effects due to chemical loss, neutral winds, and disturbance dynamo‐driven electric fields.
Effect of solar wind dynamic pressure on the distribution of oxygen ions in the magnetosphere

Abstract:Oxygen ions upflowing from the earth magnetosphere have been consider as a very important population in the earth magnetosphere dynamics, and the idea is widely accepted that the enhancement in solar wind dynamic pressure will influence the upflowing processes. In this study, based on the observational data obtained near the crossing of the magnetopause by the Cluster 3 satellite during 2003 to 2008, we compared the flux and velocity distribution of magnetosheath oxygen ions with energy above 3keV near the magnetopause at different solar wind conditions. It is found that (a) There is a positive correlation between the solar wind dynamic pressure and the upflowing oxygen ions (b) The geomagnetic activity level and IMF Bz component also have important influencs on the oxygen ions , especially on the energy spectrum, indicating different acceleration mechanism might work at different conditions.

Abstract:Solar wind and its embedded interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) affects Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere by changing high-latitude ionospheric convection patter, producing auroral precipitation and depositing energy and momentum at high latitudes. These processes are greatly enhanced during geomagnetically active periods.&#160; The geomagnetic activity induced changes at high latitudes are then transmitted to middle and low latitudes. In this work we employ the recently developed Multiscale Atmosphere-Geospace Environment (MAGE) model to simulate the non-linear electrodynamic and dynamic processes by which solar wind and IMF affect low and middle latitude thermosphere and ionosphere during geomagnetically active periods, including the stream interaction region event that happened in September 2020. &#160;We examine the changes in ionospheric electric fields caused by penetration electric fields and neutral wind dynamo, as well as changes in neutral winds, temperature, composition&#160; and ionospheric plasma densities. Model results are compared with&#160; data from recent satellite mission, including COSMIC 2, GOLD and ICON to obtain new insight in the physical processes in the global thermosphere ionosphere responses to disturbed solar wind and IMF driving conditions.
The Impact of Helium on Thermosphere Mass Density Response to Geomagnetic Activity During the Recent Solar Minimum

Abstract:High‐resolution mass density observations inferred from accelerometer measurements on the CHAMP and GRACE satellites are employed to investigate the thermosphere mass density response with latitude and altitude to geomagnetic activity during the recent solar minimum. Coplanar orbital periods in February 2007 and December 2008 revealed the altitude and latitude response in thermosphere mass density for their respective winter hemispheres was influenced by the relative amount of helium and oxygen present. The CHAMP‐to‐GRACE (C/G) mass density ratio depends on two terms; the first proportional to the ratio of the mean molecular weight to temperature and the second proportional to the vertical gradient of the logarithmic mean molecular weight. For the relative levels of helium and oxygen in February 2007, the winter hemisphere C/G mass density response to geomagnetic activity, although similar to the summer hemisphere, was caused predominantly by changes in the vertical gradient of the logarithmic mean molecular weight. In December 2008, the significant presence of helium caused the mean molecular weight changes to exceed temperature changes in the winter hemisphere leading to an increase in the C/G ratio with increasing geomagnetic activity, in opposition to the decrease observed in the summer hemisphere that was caused primarily by temperature changes. The observed behavior is indicative of composition effects influencing the mass density response and the dynamic action of the oxygen to helium transition region in both latitude and altitude will lead to complex behaviors in the mass density at GRACE altitudes throughout the extended solar minimum from 2007 to 2010.
The 27‐day Solar Rotational Cycle Response in the Mesospheric Metal Layers at Low Latitudes

Abstract:To investigate the response of the meteoric metal layers in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere regions to the 27‐day solar rotational cycle, a long‐term simulation of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with the chemistry of three metals (Na, K, and Fe) was analyzed. The correlation between variability in the metal layers and solar 27‐day forcing during different phases of the solar 11‐year cycle reveals that the response in the metal layers is much stronger during solar maximum. The altitude‐dependent correlation and sensitivity of the metal layers to the solar spectral irradiance demonstrates that there is a significant increase in sensitivity to solar rotational cycle with increasing altitude. Above 100 km, the sensitivity of the metals to changes of 10% in the solar spectral irradiance at Lyman‐alpha is estimated to be −5%. A similar response is seen in Na layer measurements made by the Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed Imaging System instrument on the Odin satellite.

Response Characteristics of Orbit-Mean Satellite Drag to Varying Geomagnetic Conditions

Abstract:*† ‡ § ** ¶ # Orbit-mean densities derived from the accelerometer experiment on the CHAMP satellite are used to investigate the global-scale response of the thermosphere at 400 km altitude to variations in geomagnetic activity. Residuals from 5-day running mean densities are used to isolate density variability primarily attributable to changes in solar wind and geomagnetic conditions. Twenty-four hour running means of these residuals are also analyzed to serve as a proxy for the density response that might typically be inferred from a 24-hour arc highprecision orbit determination. The measures of geomagnetic energy input that we employ are the traditional planetary magnetic index, Kp, and a newly-derived Joule Heating Index (JHI) that is a more physics-based proxy for thermosphere energy input. We find that statistically the time delay between Kp or JHI and the corresponding density increase is significantly less than the 6.7-h delay built into the “J70” model currently employed at NORAD, i.e., 5h and 4h, respectively. Least-squares regression formulas are also derived that capture the dependence of density response with respect to level of solar activity. In this context the use of Kp provides slightly better results than JHI, and no significant improvement over the J70 formulation is found despite the difference in time delay.
