Abstract:Abstract We present the first continuous observations of three‐dimensional spatially resolved wind fields and atmospheric motions in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere in the mid‐latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Our observations were performed during a 19‐month campaign from January 2022 to July 2023 and exploited the composite data from the first multistatic meteor radar system in China and an adjacent monostatic meteor radar. To retrieve the atmospheric kinetic properties, we introduce an improved volume velocity processing method including coordinate transformations and non‐linear constraints to minimize errors. The vertical winds are estimated separately from the iteration of the horizontal divergence to avoid potential biases or contamination from the horizontal winds. The winds and air motions show annual/semiannual variation characteristics within certain altitudes, usually more variable around the equinoxes. The vertical winds are basically within the magnitude of 1 m/s and are upward as expected at the mesopause during the summer, which corresponds to the adiabatic cooling.

A Comparison of Quiet Time Thermospheric Winds Between FPI Observations and Model Calculations

Abstract:We investigate local time, seasonal, and longitudinal variations of thermospheric horizontal winds at midlatitudes during geomagnetically quiet times by comparing winds from observations, an empirical wind model, and a numerical model. The observations are from three Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs), the empirical model is the most recent version of the Horizontal Wind Model 14 (HWM14), and the numerical model is the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The three FPI stations are located at Xinglong (geographically 40.2 degrees N, 117.4 degrees E; geomagnetically 35 degrees N) and Kelan (geographically 38.7 degrees N, 111.6 degrees E; geomagnetically 34 degrees N) in China and at Millstone Hill (geographically 42.6 degrees N, 71.5 degrees W; geomagnetically 52 degrees N) in United States. The results show that the winds at Millstone Hill are more southward and more westward than those at Xinglong and Kelan in all seasons; the directional reversal time of zonal winds is also earlier at Millstone Hill than at the other two stations. Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model shows better agreement with FPI observations in the winter months compared to summer, and in general best replicates those measurements taken at Millstone Hill. HWM14 generally produces agreement with quiet time midlatitude neutral wind measurements, with HWM14 meridional winds comparing very well throughout most of a year. HWM14 model-data discrepancies occur mainly in the zonal winds during the winter season. Overall, HWM14 predicts MH FPI observations slightly better than it does for the data from the two Asian stations. Plain Language Summary The characteristics of Fabry-Perot interferometer nighttime thermospheric wind during geomagnetically quiet times at three midlatitude stations are studied. Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model shows better agreement with Fabry-Perot interferometer observations in the winter months compared to summer, and in general best replicates those measurements taken at Millstone Hill. Horizontal Wind Model 14 generally produces agreement with quiet time midlatitude neutral wind measurements, with Horizontal Wind Model 14 meridional winds comparing very well throughout most of a year. Horizontal Wind Model 14 predicts MH Fabry-Perot interferometer observations slightly better than it does for the data from the two Asian stations.

Abstract:Abstract A new version of NCAR Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere/ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) has been developed. The main feature of this version is the species‐dependent spectral element (SE) dynamical core solved on a cubed sphere grid, eliminating the polar singularity and enabling simulations at high‐resolutions. Molecular viscosity and diffusion in the horizontal direction are also included. The Conservative Semi‐Lagrangian Multi‐Tracer Transport Scheme (CSLAM) is employed for the species transport. An efficient regridding scheme based on the Earth System Modeling Framework is used to map fields between the physics mesh and geomagnetic grid. Simulations have been performed at coarse (∼200 km and 0.25 scale height) and high (∼25 km and 0.1 scale height) resolutions. Spatial distribution of the resolved gravity waves from the high‐resolution simulations compares well with available observations in the middle and upper atmosphere. Analysis of the scale dependence of the gravity wave energy density and momentum flux shows that, while larger scale waves are dominant energetically at most latitudes, smaller scale waves contribute significantly to the total momentum flux, especially at mid‐high latitudes. The waves in the thermosphere are shown to be strongly modulated by the large‐scale wind through Doppler shift and molecular damping, and they cause large neutral atmosphere and plasma perturbations.

Abstract:Abstract The non‐hydrostatic Model for Prediction Across Scales‐Atmosphere (MPAS‐A) dynamical core has recently been adapted for the Specified Chemistry Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (SC‐WACCM). In this study, the mean zonal wind and temperature climatology from SC‐WACCM/MPAS‐A is compared with the results from SC‐WACCM using the finite volume and spectral element dynamical cores, as well as the zonal wind and temperature climatology of Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite mission and SABER. The simulations have been performed at horizontal resolutions of ∼100 km. Generally a good agreement is seen between the results from the three dynamical cores, which verifies that the new dynamical core is working with WACCM.

Abstract:Recent advances in atmospheric observations and modeling have enabled the investigation of thermosphere–ionosphere interactions as a whole-atmosphere problem. This study examines how dynamical variability in the middle atmosphere (MA) affects intra-day changes in the thermosphere and ionosphere. Specifically, this study investigates ionosphere–thermosphere interactions during different time periods of January 2013 using the Specified Dynamics Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, eXtended version (SD-WACCM-X), coupled to the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) ionosphere of the Sami3 is Another Model of the Ionosphere (SAMI3) model. To represent the weather of the day, the coupled thermosphere–ionosphere system is nudged below 90 km toward the atmospheric specifications provided by the Navy Global Environmental Model for High-Altitude (NAVGEM-HA). Hindcast simulations during January 2013 are carried out with the full dataset of observations normally assimilated by NAVGEM-HA and with a degraded dataset where observations above 40 km are not assimilated. Ionospheric regions with statistically significant changes are identified using key ionospheric properties, including the electron density, peak electron density, and height of the peak electron density. Ionospheric changes show a spatial structure that illustrates the impact of two different types of coupling between the thermosphere and the ionosphere: variability induced by wind-dynamo coupling through electric conductivity and ion-neutral interactions in the upper thermosphere. The two simulations presented in this study show that changing the state of the MA affects ionosphere–thermosphere coupling through changes in the behavior and amplitude of non-migrating tides, resulting in improved key ionospheric specifications.

Abstract:Abstract Motivated by numerous lower atmosphere climate model hindcast simulations, we performed simulations of the Earth's atmosphere from the surface up through the thermosphere‐ionosphere to reveal for the first time the century scale changes in the upper atmosphere from the 1920s through the 2010s using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model—eXtended (WACCM‐X v. 2.1). We impose solar minimum conditions to get a clear indication of the effects of the long‐term forcing from greenhouse gas increases and changes of the Earth's magnetic field and to avoid the requirement for careful removal of the 11‐year solar cycle as in some previous studies using observations and models. These previous studies have shown greenhouse gas effects in the upper atmosphere but what has been missing is the time evolution with actual greenhouse gas increases throughout the last century, including the period of less than 5% increase prior to the space age and the transition to the over 25% increase in the latter half of the 20th century. Neutral temperature, density, and ionosphere changes are close to those reported in previous studies. Also, we find high correlation between the continuous carbon dioxide rate of change over this past century and that of temperature in the thermosphere and the ionosphere, attributed to the shorter adjustment time of the upper atmosphere to greenhouse gas changes relative to the longer time in the lower atmosphere. Consequently, WACCM‐X future scenario projections can provide valuable insight in the entire atmosphere of future greenhouse gas effects and mitigation efforts.

Abstract:Using the latest version of Mesoscale Modeling System (MM5v3), we assimilated wind data from the scatterometer and built a model to assimilate the wind field over eastern China seas and adjacent waters and applied the wave model WAVEWATCH-III to test the sea area with assimilative wind and blended wind of QSCAT and NCEP as driving forces. High precision and resolution numerical wave results were obtained. Analysis indicated that if we replace the model wind result with the blended wind, better sea surface wind results and wave results could be obtained.

Abstract:In this study, we present nearly 9 years of the quasi16-day wave (Q16DW) in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) wind at middle latitudes based on long-term wind observations between April 2014 and December 2022 by the Mengcheng (33.4°N, 116.5°E) meteor radar. There are two maxima in the Q16DW amplitude in the winter and early spring (near the equinox) and a minimum during the summer. The Q16DWs are relatively weak in meridional winds with no obvious seasonal variations. On average, the phase of the zonal Q16DW is larger than the meridional components with a mean difference that is slightly less than 90°, which suggests that there are orthogonal relationships between them. During the bursts of Q16DW, the periods in winter range between 15 and 18 d, whereas in summer, the periods of the planetary waves have a wider range. The wintertime Q16DW anomalies are, on average, amplified when the zonal wind shear anomalies increase, suggesting that barotropic instability may be a source of the Q16DW. Although the interannual variability of Q16DW amplitudes has been suggested observationally, there is no significant relationship between the interannual wind shear variability and Q16DW at most altitudes.

Abstract:Abstract. Long-term and continuous observations of mesospheric–lower thermospheric winds are rare, but they are important to investigate climatological changes at these altitudes on timescales of several years, covering a solar cycle and longer. Such long time series are a natural heritage of the mesosphere–lower thermosphere climate, and they are valuable to compare climate models or long-term runs of general circulation models (GCMs). Here we present a climatological comparison of wind observations from six meteor radars at two conjugate latitudes to validate the corresponding mean winds and atmospheric diurnal and semidiurnal tides from three GCMs, namely the Ground-to-Topside Model of Atmosphere and Ionosphere for Aeronomy (GAIA), the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Extension (Specified Dynamics) (WACCM-X(SD)), and the Upper Atmosphere ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic (UA-ICON) model. Our results indicate that there are interhemispheric differences in the seasonal characteristics of the diurnal and semidiurnal tide. There are also some differences in the mean wind climatologies of the models and the observations. Our results indicate that GAIA shows reasonable agreement with the meteor radar observations during the winter season, whereas WACCM-X(SD) shows better agreement with the radars for the hemispheric zonal summer wind reversal, which is more consistent with the meteor radar observations. The free-running UA-ICON tends to show similar winds and tides compared to WACCM-X(SD).

Abstract:Abstract We compare simulations of mesospheric tracer descent in the winter and spring of 2009 with two versions of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM), both with specified dynamics. One is constrained with data from the Modern‐Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications which extends from 0 to 50 km; the other uses the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System‐Advanced Level Physics High Altitude (NOGAPS‐ALPHA) which extends up to 92 km. By comparison with Solar Occultation for Ice Experiment data we show that constraining WACCM to NOGAPS‐ALPHA yields a dramatic improvement in the simulated descent of enhanced nitric oxide (NO) and very low methane (CH 4 ). We suggest that constraining to NOGAPS‐ALPHA compensates for an underestimate of nonorographic gravity wave drag in WACCM. Other possibilities, such as missing energetic particle precipitation or underestimated eddy diffusion, are less likely for the Arctic winter and spring of 2009. Abstract:A sodium lidar (light detection and range) network for the Earth's mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) temperature, wind and sodium density measurements is designed and constructed in the second phase of the Chinese Meridional Project. Five narrowband sodium lidar systems are deployed across various regions in China, designed and developed based on similar principles and structures. They adhere to uniform data processing standards and operate under the same observational protocols. This allows them to form a network of lidar systems capable of detecting temperature and wind fields in the MLT. The preliminary observation results of the lidar near Tibetan plateau is demonstrated in this paper. This lidar network offers horizontal perspectives on large scale that a single‐station lidar system can't provide. Its future observations are expected to advance the understanding of atmospheric waves by studying wave propagation, chemical‐dynamical coupling processes and the horizonal structure of in the MLT region.

Abstract:The Modeling Platform Across Scales-Atmosphere (MPAS) was used to simulate meteorological conditions for a two-week winter episode during 10–23 January 2013, and a two-week summer episode during 18–31 July 2016, using both as a global model and a regional model with a focus on California. The results of both global and regional applications of MPAS were compared against the surface and upper air rawinsonde observations while the variations of characteristic meteorological variables and modeling errors were evaluated in space, time, and statistical sense. The results of the Advanced Weather Research and Forecast (WRF-ARW, hereafter WRF) model simulations for the same episodes were also used to evaluate the results of both applications of MPAS. The temporal analyses performed at surface stations indicate that both global and regional applications of MPAS and WRF model predict the diurnal evolution of characteristic meteorological parameters reasonably well in both winter and summer episodes studied here. The average diurnal bias in predicting 2 m temperature by MPAS and WRF are about the same with a maximum of 2 °C in winter and 1 °C in summer while that of 2 m mixing ratio is within 1 g/kg for all three modeling applications. The rawinsonde profiles of temperature, dew point temperature, and wind direction agree reasonably well with observations while wind speed is underestimated by all three applications. The comparisons of the spatial distribution of anomaly correlation and mean bias errors calculated from each model results for 2 m temperature, 2 m water vapor mixing ratio, 10 m wind speed and wind direction indicate that all three models have similar magnitudes of agreement with observations as well as errors away from observations throughout California.

Abstract:The high‐resolution Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere/ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) is used to study the impacts of gravity waves (GWs) on the thermospheric circulation and composition. The resolved GWs are found to propagate anisotropically with stronger eastward components at most altitudes. The dissipation of these waves in the thermosphere produces a net eastward forcing that reaches peak values between 200 and 250 km at mid‐high latitudes in both hemispheres. Consequently, the mean circulation is weakened in the winter hemisphere and enhanced in the summer, which in turn impacts the thermospheric composition. Most notably, the column integrated O/N2 in both hemispheres is reduced and agrees better with observations. The mean thermospheric GW forcing in the meridional direction has comparable amplitude and acts to modify the gradient‐wind relationship.
