Abstract:Abstract We present the first continuous observations of three‐dimensional spatially resolved wind fields and atmospheric motions in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere in the mid‐latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Our observations were performed during a 19‐month campaign from January 2022 to July 2023 and exploited the composite data from the first multistatic meteor radar system in China and an adjacent monostatic meteor radar. To retrieve the atmospheric kinetic properties, we introduce an improved volume velocity processing method including coordinate transformations and non‐linear constraints to minimize errors. The vertical winds are estimated separately from the iteration of the horizontal divergence to avoid potential biases or contamination from the horizontal winds. The winds and air motions show annual/semiannual variation characteristics within certain altitudes, usually more variable around the equinoxes. The vertical winds are basically within the magnitude of 1 m/s and are upward as expected at the mesopause during the summer, which corresponds to the adiabatic cooling.

A Comparison of Quiet Time Thermospheric Winds Between FPI Observations and Model Calculations

Abstract:We investigate local time, seasonal, and longitudinal variations of thermospheric horizontal winds at midlatitudes during geomagnetically quiet times by comparing winds from observations, an empirical wind model, and a numerical model. The observations are from three Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs), the empirical model is the most recent version of the Horizontal Wind Model 14 (HWM14), and the numerical model is the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The three FPI stations are located at Xinglong (geographically 40.2 degrees N, 117.4 degrees E; geomagnetically 35 degrees N) and Kelan (geographically 38.7 degrees N, 111.6 degrees E; geomagnetically 34 degrees N) in China and at Millstone Hill (geographically 42.6 degrees N, 71.5 degrees W; geomagnetically 52 degrees N) in United States. The results show that the winds at Millstone Hill are more southward and more westward than those at Xinglong and Kelan in all seasons; the directional reversal time of zonal winds is also earlier at Millstone Hill than at the other two stations. Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model shows better agreement with FPI observations in the winter months compared to summer, and in general best replicates those measurements taken at Millstone Hill. HWM14 generally produces agreement with quiet time midlatitude neutral wind measurements, with HWM14 meridional winds comparing very well throughout most of a year. HWM14 model-data discrepancies occur mainly in the zonal winds during the winter season. Overall, HWM14 predicts MH FPI observations slightly better than it does for the data from the two Asian stations. Plain Language Summary The characteristics of Fabry-Perot interferometer nighttime thermospheric wind during geomagnetically quiet times at three midlatitude stations are studied. Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model shows better agreement with Fabry-Perot interferometer observations in the winter months compared to summer, and in general best replicates those measurements taken at Millstone Hill. Horizontal Wind Model 14 generally produces agreement with quiet time midlatitude neutral wind measurements, with Horizontal Wind Model 14 meridional winds comparing very well throughout most of a year. Stratosphere wind and temperature measurements using a Rayleigh Doppler lidar in mid-latitude area of China

Abstract:Since the 60km mobile Rayleigh Doppler lidar of University of Science and Technology of China had been developed in 2013, more than 100-days valid nighttime wind and temperature data with time resolution of 30 minutes and height resolution of 200m & 1km (below & above 40km, respectively) was obtained during recent 3 years. The observation locations cover the northwest (mid-latitude) of China: Delhi (37.371° N, 97.374° E), Xinzhou (38.425°N, 112.729°E) and Jiuquan (39.741°N, 98.495°E). Recently, we extract the perturbations of the wind and temperature profiles of this database and have found gravity activities of the wind field. Several gravity waves cases of wind field are shown in this paper and typical characteristics of the gravity waves are analyzed in this mid-latitude area of China. This kind of gravity wave observation of stratosphere wind field is rare in the world and is significant for the study of atmospheric dynamics.

Abstract:A sodium lidar (light detection and range) network for the Earth's mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) temperature, wind and sodium density measurements is designed and constructed in the second phase of the Chinese Meridional Project. Five narrowband sodium lidar systems are deployed across various regions in China, designed and developed based on similar principles and structures. They adhere to uniform data processing standards and operate under the same observational protocols. This allows them to form a network of lidar systems capable of detecting temperature and wind fields in the MLT. The preliminary observation results of the lidar near Tibetan plateau is demonstrated in this paper. This lidar network offers horizontal perspectives on large scale that a single‐station lidar system can't provide. Its future observations are expected to advance the understanding of atmospheric waves by studying wave propagation, chemical‐dynamical coupling processes and the horizonal structure of in the MLT region.

Two-dimensional wind field observation based on multistatic meteor radars in central and eastern China

Abstract:All-sky meteor radars have become a reliable and widely used tool for observing horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. This provides vital data support for the study of dynamics in this region. Currently, meteor radars mainly operate in single-station observation mode with no horizontal resolution and can only estimate the average horizontal wind field in the meteor region. To obtain more abundant and accurate information about the atmospheric wind field in the MLT region, a multistatic meteor radar system located in Anhui, China was introduced in this study. The radar system consists of a monostatic meteor radar installed in Mengcheng (33.36 °N, 116.49 °E) and a remote receiver installed in Changfeng (31.98 °N, 117.22 °E) at a distance of about 167 km. Compared to the monostatic meteor radar, the multistatic meteor radar system could observe 70% more forward scatter meteor echoes and offer more than 400 km × 400 km horizontal observation area. Moreover, the multistatic meteor radar system provides more abundant viewing angles. This new multistatic system offers the feasibility of retrieving two-dimensional horizontal wind fields and the gradient of horizontal wind as well as estimating the divergence, relative vorticity, stretching and shearing deformation of the horizontal wind field. The multistatic meteor radar system provides more horizontal wind parameters, significantly contributing to the further studies of the atmospheric dynamics process in the MLT region. In addition, multistatic meteor radar observation network upcoming in the future will realize the 3-d wind field with high spatiotemporal resolution in the MLT region above central and eastern China, greatly improving our understanding of the various wave processes in the near space.

Abstract:Simultaneous wind and temperature measurements in stratosphere with high time-spatial resolution for gravity waves study are scarce. In this paper we perform wind field gravity waves cases in the stratosphere observed by a mobile Rayleigh Doppler lidar. This lidar system with both wind and temperature measurements were implemented for atmosphere gravity waves research in the altitude region 15-60 km. Observations were carried out for two periods of time: 3 months started from November 4, 2014 in Xinzhou, China (38.425 degrees N, 112.729 degrees E) and 2 months started from October 7, 2015 in Jiuquan, China (39.741 degrees N, 98.495 degrees E). The mesoscale fluctuations of the horizontal wind velocity and the two dimensional spectra analysis of these fluctuations show the presence of dominant oscillatory modes with wavelength of 4-14 km and period of around 10 hours in several cases. The simultaneous temperature observations make it possible to identify gravity wave cases from the relationships between different variables: temperature and horizontal wind. The observed cases demonstrate the Rayleigh Doppler Lidar's capacity to study gravity waves. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America
A Comparison of Mesospheric and Low‐thermospheric Winds Measured by Fabry‐Perot Interferometer and Meteor Radar over Central China

Abstract:Wind data observed by a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and a meteor radar (MR) deployed in two stations, which are 430 km apart in ground distance, are used to study wind climatology in mesosphere/lower thermosphere over central China and compare between the measurements. A general morphologic similarity of the FPI winds and MR winds is identified with 4 year data since November 2011. At 87 km, the wind vector plots show that the FPI and MR winds agree with each other very well in all months. The zonal winds of both instruments have an apparent semiannual variation with a maximal strength of -20 m/s at around 18:00 UT in equinoctial months, and the meridional winds from both instruments have an apparent annual variation with a maximal strength of -40 m/s at around 15:00 UT in summer months. The correlation coefficients between the measurements of the two instruments are about 0.95 for meridional wind and 0.90 for zonal wind. At 97 km, the wind vector plots show that FPI and MR winds agree with each other from May to October and are obviously different in the rest months. There are very weak semiannual variations at around 18:00 UT for both zonal winds and pronounced annual variation at around 13:00 UT for both meridional winds. The correlation coefficients between the FPI and MR winds are 0.73 for zonal wind and 0.86 for meridional wind, which are overall smaller than that at 87 km. A Gaussian distribution of airglow profile is used to investigate the deviations associated with peak height and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of airglow layer. It is found that the variation of peak height could lead to about 20% variation of correlation coefficients between measurements at the height of 87 km and about 14.8% at the height of 97 km on average. The variation of FWHM could lead to a correlation coefficient variation of about 2.4% and 3.5% at the height of 87 km and 97 km, respectively. Some other reasons, such as the influence of geomagnetic field on meteor trail and the propagation of gravity waves, could also contribute to these differences between measurements.

Abstract:The atmospheric temperatures and densities in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region are essential for studying the dynamics and climate of the middle and upper atmosphere. In this study, we present more than 9 years of mesopause temperatures and relative densities estimated by using ambipolar diffusion coefficient measurements observed by the Mengcheng meteor radar (33.4 degrees N, 116.5 degrees E). The intercomparison between the meteor radar and Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics/Sounding of the Atmosphere by Broadband Emission Radiometry (TIMED/SABER) and Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura/ Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations indicates that the meteor radar temperatures and densities agree well with the simultaneous satellite measurements. Annual variations dominate the mesopause temperatures, with the maximum during winter and the minimum during summer. The mesopause relative densities also show annual variations, with strong maxima near the spring equinox and weak maxima before the winter solstice, and with a minimum during summer. In addition, the mesopause density exhibits a structure similar to that of the zonal wind: as the zonal wind flows eastward (westward), the mesopause density decreases (increases). At the same time, the meridional wind shows a structure similar to that of the mesopause temperature: as the meridional wind shows northward (southward) enhancements, the mesopause temperature increases (decreases). Simultaneous horizontal wind, temperature, and density observations provide multiple mesospheric parameters for investigating mesospheric dynamics and thermodynamic processes and have the potential to improve widely used empirical atmospheric models.

Abstract:Since the mobile Rayleigh Doppler lidar of the University of Science and Technology of China was developed in 2013, more than 100 days of valid nighttime wind data from 15 to 60 km altitude were obtained during recent 3 years. The observation locations cover the northwest (midlatitude) of China: Delingha (37.371 degrees N, 97.374 degrees E), Xinzhou (38.425 degrees N, 112.729 degrees E), and Jiuquan (39.741 degrees N, 98.495 degrees E). Recently, we have extracted perturbations of the wind profiles from the wind field measurements and we have found that inertia gravity waves and mountain waves existed at the same time. The results of wind field and several gravity waves cases are shown in this paper. Typical characteristics of the gravity waves are analyzed in this midlatitude area of China. A 2-D fast Fourier transform of the wind perturbation shows that a dominant stationary wave mode and a downward wave mode exist simultaneously in the spectrum. A band-pass 2-D filter was applied to the spectrum followed by inverse fast Fourier transform to separate inertia gravity waves from stationary mountain waves. The horizontal wavelength is retrieved using hodograph methods, indicating that the inertia waves are generated thousands of kilometers away. Observed mountain waves from a combination of vertical wind and leaned line of sight wind measurements show a small-angle leaned wave front from the horizontal direction. This kind of gravity wave observation of the stratospheric wind field and its wave patterns is rare and significant for the study of atmospheric dynamics. Plain Language Summary Stratosphere inertia and mountain gravity waves of wind field in northwest of China were observed by a Rayleigh Doppler wind lidar. The perturbation of the wind data shows dominant downward waves from 15 to 50 km altitude, and stationary mountain wave propagated up to 35 km. The 2-D filter is applied to the perturbation to isolate the dominant single mode. The inertia wave has a typical vertical wavelength of 7 km, horizontal wavelength of 1300 km, and intrinsic period of 13 h, which are calculated by hodograph method. The mountain wave shows a wavefront with a small leaned angle from horizontal and vertical wavelengths of 6.7 km. This is the first time of observing mountain waves and inertia waves at the same time from altitude 15 km to 50 km by a Rayleigh Doppler lidar system.
The Midlatitude Thermospheric Dynamics from an Interhemispheric Perspective

Abstract:Using Fabry‐Perot interferometers at five midlatitude stations (Boulder, Palmer, Millstone Hill, Mount John, and Kelan) in both hemispheres, we examine the interhemispheric and seasonal variations of midlatitude thermospheric dynamics. We also use the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) to simulate the seasonal changes of winds and the effects from Sub‐Auroral Polarization Streams. The observations and TIEGCM simulations show a clear seasonal variation with more westward and equatorward summer winds. The TIEGCM runs overestimate the westward zonal winds and underestimate the electron densities in the northern summer. We believe that the underestimated TIEGCM electron density leads to a weak ion drag effect in the model, and strong westward zonal winds. TIEGCM overestimates the Sub‐Auroral Polarization Stream effects on neutral winds in most cases, probably because the empirical Sub‐Auroral Polarization Stream model used by the TIEGCM applies an unrealistic persistent electric field for a long period of time (over 3 hr) due to the low temporal resolution of the Kp index.

Abstract:AbstractAn overview of Sun–Sky Radiometer Observation Network (SONET) measurements in China is presented. Based on observations at 16 distributed SONET sites in China, atmospheric aerosol parameters are acquired via standardization processes of operational measurement, maintenance, calibration, inversion, and quality control implemented since 2010. A climatology study is performed focusing on total columnar atmospheric aerosol characteristics, including optical (aerosol optical depth, ÅngstrÖm exponent, fine-mode fraction, single-scattering albedo), physical (volume particle size distribution), chemical composition (black carbon; brown carbon; fine-mode scattering component, coarse-mode component; and aerosol water), and radiative properties (aerosol radiative forcing and efficiency). Data analyses show that aerosol optical depth is low in the west but high in the east of China. Aerosol composition also shows significant spatial and temporal variations, leading to noticeable diversities in optical and physical property patterns. In west and north China, aerosols are generally affected by dust particles, while monsoon climate and human activities impose remarkable influences on aerosols in east and south China. Aerosols in China exhibit strong light-scattering capability and result in significant radiative cooling effects.

Abstract:Recent progress in space weather research are briefly presented here from three aspects: establishment or improvement in observation systems, such as extra-soft X-ray detector and γ-ray detector onboard the spacecraft ‘Shen Zhou 2’, new solar radio broad-band spectrometer, magnetometer-chain, ionosonde and digisonde–chain, laser-lidar system and VHF radar; partial topic progresses included in CMEs, multi-streamer structures, evolution of interplanetary magnetic field B z component, regional properties of traveling ionospheric disturbances, a fully-nonlinear global dynamical model for the middle and upper atmosphere, and a combined prediction method for geomagnetic disturbances; and space weather activity, such as ‘Meridian Project’ — a national major scientific project, ‘International Space Weather Meridian Circle Program’ — a suggestion of internationalization of ‘Meridian Project’, ‘Space Weather Research Plan’ — a major research plan from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC) and other space weather activities.

Abstract:A mobile Rayleigh Doppler lidar based on the molecular double-edge technique is developed for measuring wind velocity in the middle atmosphere up to 60 km. The lidar uses three lasers with a mean power of 17.5 W at 355 nm each and three 1 m diameter telescopes to receive the backscattered echo: one points to zenith for vertical wind component and temperature measurement; the two others pointing toward east and north are titled at 30° from the zenith for zonal and meridional wind component, respectively. The Doppler shift of the backscattered echo is measured by inter-comparing the signal detected through each of the double-edge channels of a triple Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) tuned to either side of the emitted laser line. The third channel of FPI is used for frequency locking and a locking accuracy of 1.8 MHz RMS (root-mean-square) at 355 nm over 2 hours is realized, corresponding to a systematic error of 0.32 m/s. In this paper, we present detailed technical evolutions on system calibration. To validate the performance of the lidar, comparison experiments was carried out in December 2013, which showed good agreement with radiosondes but notable biases with ECMWF (European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasts) in the height range of overlapping data. Wind observation over one month performed in Delhi (37.371° N, 97.374° E), northwest of China, demonstrated the stability and robustness of the system.

Sub-Hourly Variations of Wind Shear in the Mesosphere-Lower Thermosphere as Observed by the China Meteor Radar Chain

Abstract:Wind shear has important implications for Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) and gravity waves (GWs) in the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT) region where its momentum transport process is dominated by short-period (<1 h) GWs. However, the sub-hourly variation in wind shear is still not well quantified. This study aims to improve current understanding of vertical wind shear by analyzing multi-year meteor radar measurements at the Mohe (MH, 53.5°N, 122.3°E), Beijing (BJ, 40.3°N, 116.2°E), Wuhan (WH, 30.5°N, 114.6°E), and Fuke (FK, 19.5°N, 109.1°E) stations in China. The wind field is estimated by a new algorithm, e.g., the damped least squares fitting. Taking the wind shear estimated by normal products as a criterion, the shear produced by the new algorithm has more statistical convergence as compared to the traditional algorithm, e.g., the least squares fitting. Therefore, we argue that the 10 min DLSA wind probably produces a more reasonable vertical shear. Both intensive wind shears and GW kinetic energy can be simultaneously captured during the 0600–1600 UTs of May at MH and during the 1300–2400 UTs of March at FK, possibly implying that the up-propagation of GWs could contribute to the production of large wind shears. The sub-hourly variation in wind shears is potentially valuable for understanding the interrelationship between shear (or KHI) and GWs.
