Abstract:It has been widely recognized that the ionosphere of the terrestrial planet responds greatly to the enhanced X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation during solar flares. However, little attention has been paid to the comparative study of the ionospheric response between different Earth-like planets. In this work, we investigate the responses of the ionospheres of Earth, Venus, and Mars to the 2017 September 6 solar flares, with self-consistent planetary ionospheric models. The result shows that the electron density increases significantly in the relatively low ionosphere region, and its maximum relative change displays profound differences between planets. The ion temperatures at Earth and Venus share a similar response to flares, but differ from those at Mars, which relates to the background atmospheric conditions. For the electron temperature response to the X9.3 flare, at Earth it increases with a maximum magnitude of 250 K, in contrast to the decrease of ∼45 K at Venus and ∼40 K at Mars. The vertical plasma velocity at all three planets exhibits enhancement during solar flares. As a result, the upward flux increases by 2.16 × 10 12 m −2 s −1 at 800 km of Earth, 3.79 × 10 10 m −2 s −1 , and 8.45 × 10 9 m −2 s −1 at 400 km of Venus and Mars. This is the first self-consistent simulation of the flare-induced enhancement of upward plasma flow at Venus and Mars.

Abstract:The Earth's magnetosphere is the outermost layer of the geospace system deflecting energetic charged particles from the Sun and solar wind. The solar wind has major impacts on the Earth's magnetosphere, but it is unclear whether the same holds for solar flares—a sudden eruption of electromagnetic radiation on the Sun. Here we use a recently developed whole geospace model combined with observational data from the 6 September 2017 X9.3 solar flare event to reveal solar flare effects on magnetospheric dynamics and on the electrodynamic coupling between the magnetosphere and its adjacent ionosphere, the ionized part of Earth's upper atmosphere. We observe a rapid and large increase in flare-induced photoionization of the polar ionospheric E-region at altitudes between 90 km and 150 km. This reduces the efficiency of mechanical energy conversion in the dayside solar wind–magnetosphere interaction, resulting in less Joule heating of the Earth's upper atmosphere, a reconfiguration of magnetosphere convection, as well as changes in dayside and nightside auroral precipitation. This work thus demonstrates that solar flare effects extend throughout the geospace via electrodynamic coupling, and are not limited—as previously believed—to the atmospheric region where radiation energy is absorbed<sup><a href="/articles/s41567-021-01203-5#ref-CR1">1</a></sup>.

Magnetohydrodynamic Modeling of Background Solar Wind Near Mars: Comparison with MAVEN and Tianwen-1

Abstract:Combined with data assimilation methods, a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical model is an effective tool to explore the mechanism of space weather. As a driver of space weather, the dynamic development of stream interaction regions (SIRs) near the orbit of Mars is an area of active research. In this study, we use the interplanetary total variation diminishing (TVD) MHD model to simulate solar wind parameters and model SIRs near Mars from 2021 November 15 to 2021 December 31. In this model, the MHD equations are solved by the conservation TVD Lax–Friedrichs scheme in a rotating spherical coordinate system with six component meshes used on the spherical shell. Solar wind velocity, density, temperature, and magnetic field strength are given at the inner boundary due to the characteristic waves propagating outward. We compared modeled results with observations from Mars Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) and Tianwen-1 (China’s first Mars exploration mission). Statistical analysis shows that the simulated results can capture SIRs and are in good agreement with observations; moreover, the assimilated results based on the Kalman filter improve the accuracy of numerical prediction compared with simulated results. This paper is the first attempt to simulate SIR events combined with MAVEN and Tianwen-1 in situ observations. Our work demonstrates that using the MHD model with the Kalman filter to reconstruct solar wind parameters can help us study the characteristics of SIRs near Mars, improve the capabilities of space weather forecasting, and understand the background solar wind environment.

Effects of Force in the Martian Plasma Environment with Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure Enhancement

Abstract:Disturbed solar wind dynamic pressure is one of the important external drivers which could cause significant impacts on Martian plasma environment. In this study, a 3D multifluid multispecies numerical model is established to simulate the interaction between solar wind and Mars. Functions of electromagnetic forces applied on different ion species were analyzed. We found that the total electromagnetic force peaks near bow shock (BS) and magnetic pileup boundary (MPB) with clear asymmetry features, acting to decelerate solar wind plasma across boundary layers, and compresses heavy ions towards the planet inside the MPB. For solar wind protons, electron pressure gradient force dominates near BS and Hall electric field force dominates near MPB, controlling the location of plasma boundary. Furthermore, the morphology of motional electric field force shows clear north‐south asymmetry, leading to the formation of asymmetric structures and plasma flow in Martian space environment. The response of BS, MPB to a solar wind dynamic pressure enhancement event, as well as the effects of electromagnetic forces in this process are also investigated. After the arrival of solar wind pulse, the magnitudes of electromagnetic forces increased simultaneously to balance the enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure, while the peaks of forces moved inward with BS and MPB. The magnitudes and peaks of ion velocity in subsolar region show similar variations as well, with the greater enhancement of forces leading to the greater increase of ion velocities, indicating that the changes of forces influence boundary layers through the variation of plasma speed.

Abstract:Magnetosonic waves are an important medium for energy transfer in collisionless space plasma. Magnetosonic waves have been widely investigated in the upstream of the bow shock at Mars. These waves are believed to originate from pickup ions or reflected particles. By utilizing MAVEN spacecraft data, we have observed the occurrence of quasi-perpendicularly propagating magnetosonic emissions near the proton gyrofrequency in the Martian magnetotail region. These plasma waves are associated with a significant enhancement of proton and oxygen flux. The excited magnetosonic waves could possibly heat the protons through resonance and facilitate the ionospheric plasma escape. Our results could be helpful to better understand the Mars' magnetospheric dynamics and offer insights into possible energy redistribution between waves and plasma in the Martian nightside magnetosphere.

Abstract:Solar and stellar flares are the most intense emitters of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation in planetary systems1,2. On the Sun, strong flares are usually found in newly emerging sunspot regions3. The emergence of these magnetic sunspot groups leads to the accumulation of magnetic energy in the corona. When the magnetic field undergoes abrupt relaxation, the energy released powers coronal mass ejections as well as heating plasma to temperatures beyond tens of millions of kelvins. While recent work has shed light on how magnetic energy and twist accumulate in the corona4 and on how three-dimensional magnetic reconnection allows for rapid energy release5,6, a self-consistent model capturing how such magnetic changes translate into observable diagnostics has remained elusive. Here, we present a comprehensive radiative magnetohydrodynamics simulation of a solar flare capturing the process from emergence to eruption. The simulation has sufficient realism for the synthesis of remote sensing measurements to compare with observations at visible, ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths. This unifying model allows us to explain a number of well-known features of solar flares7, including the time profile of the X-ray flux during flares, origin and temporal evolution of chromospheric evaporation and condensation, and sweeping of flare ribbons in the lower atmosphere. Furthermore, the model reproduces the apparent non-thermal shape of coronal X-ray spectra, which is the result of the superposition of multi-component super-hot plasmas8 up to and beyond 100 million K.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The correlation between space environment conditions and the properties of escaping ions is a central topic of Mars research. Although empirical correlations have been visible in the data, a physics-based interpretation, rather than statistics-based pictures, has not been established yet. As a first effort, we investigate the electric field, the direct contributor to ion acceleration, in the Mars plasma environment from a hybrid plasma model (particle ions and fluid electrons). We use Amitis, a hybrid model combined with an observation-based ionospheric model, to simulate the Mars–solar wind interaction under nominal solar wind plasma conditions for perpendicular and Parker spiral directions of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The simulations show following results: (1) the electric field morphology is structured by the IMF direction and the different plasma domains in the solar wind–Mars interaction; (2) asymmetry of the electric field between the hemispheres where the convective electric field points inward and outward, respectively, due to the mass loading and asymmetric draping of the magnetic field lines; (3) the motional electric field dominates in most regions, especially in the dayside magnetosheath; and (4) the Hall term is an order of magnitude weaker and significant in the magnetotail and plasma boundaries for a perpendicular IMF case. The Hall term is relatively stronger for the Parker spiral case. (5) The ambipolar electric field, in principle, agrees with Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution measurements in the magnetosheath.

Micro‐scale plasma instabilities in the interaction region of the solar wind and the Martian upper atmosphere

Abstract:We present results, obtained by several instruments onboard NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft, that show that the interaction region of the solar wind and the Martian upper atmosphere coincides with intense plasma wave activity. The turbulence region features nonlinear structures, identified as ion phase‐space holes and double layers, that emerge in the saturation phase of instabilities in the ion‐acoustic frequency range. One‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell simulations suggest that the waves and the nonlinear structures are very effective in coupling the flowing solar wind and the Martian plasma. Specifically, the simulations show that the magnetic field‐aligned component of the solar wind protons decelerates by about 20% in temporal and spatial scales of the orders of ∼ 100 ms and several kilometers, respectively. The results thus suggest that the waves may play an important role in the interaction region.

Abstract:Using data from the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Voltatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) and ESA Mars Express spacecraft, we show that transient phenomena in the foreshock and solar wind can directly inject energy into the ionosphere of Mars. We demonstrate that the impact of compressive Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF) waves in the solar wind on the induced magnetospheres drive compressional, linearly polarized, magnetosonic ULF waves in the ionosphere, and a localized electromagnetic "ringing" at the local proton gyrofrequency. The pulsations heat and energize ionospheric plasmas. A preliminary survey of events shows that no special upstream conditions are required in the interplanetary magnetic field or solar wind. Elevated ion densities and temperatures in the solar wind near to Mars are consistent with the presence of an additional population of Martian ions, leading to ion-ion instablities, associated wave-particle interactions, and heating of the solar wind. The phenomenon was found to be seasonal, occurring when Mars is near perihelion. Finally, we present simultaneous multipoint observations of the phenomenon, with the Mars Express observing the waves upstream, and MAVEN observing the response in the ionosphere. When these new observations are combined with decades of previous studies, they collectively provide strong evidence for a previously undemonstrated atmospheric loss process at unmagnetized planets: ionospheric escape driven by the direct impact of transient phenomena from the foreshock and solar wind.

Abstract:As incident solar wind encounters the martian upper atmosphere, it undergoes deflection particularly in the magnetosheath. However, the plasma flow exhibits asymmetrical distribution features within this transition region, which is investigated by employing a three‐dimensional Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model from an energy transfer perspective in this study. Simulation results reveal that solar wind protons transfer momentum to ionospheric heavy ions through motional electric field in the hemisphere where the motional electric field points outward from the planet. In the opposite hemisphere, solar wind flow tends to be effectively accelerated by ambipolar and Hall electric fields. The distinct dynamics of solar wind protons in both hemispheres result in the asymmetrical deflection. Furthermore, the extent of asymmetry grows as the cross‐flow component of the upstream interplanetary magnetic field increases, but diminishes as the density of the solar wind proton increases, contingent upon the energy effectively acquired from ambipolar and Hall electric fields.

Investigation on the impact of solar flares on the Martian atmospheric emissions in the dayside near-terminator region: Case Studies

Abstract:Solar transient events like flares can cause sudden changes in planetary plasma and neutral environment. Here, we present an investigation of the variability of the Martian atmospheric emissions viz. OI 130.4 nm, 135.6 nm, CO2+ ultraviolet doublet (UVD), and CO Cameron band (CB) in the less explored dayside near-terminator region during solar flare events. The two X8.2 and M6 class flares during September 2017 on Mars have been selected from existing catalogs. Using data from the imaging ultraviolet spectrograph (IUVS) aboard the MAVEN spacecraft, we examined limb radiance profiles. We observed a significant increase in radiance for major emissions around the peak with a more pronounced impact below the peak during flares compared to quiet time. During solar flares, for 130.4 nm and 135.6 nm emission, the maximum deviation in radiance beneath peak approaches to ~63% and ~123%, respectively. Whereas, for CO2+ UVD and CO CB, it is ~64% and ~50%, respectively. Additionally, we have presented an average scenario of dayside near-terminator (SZA~70-90°) and observed a notable trend of higher percentage deviation for atomic emissions compared to molecular emissions during flares. Further, our analysis depicts a higher percentage deviation during X8.2 compared to M6 class flare. This study underscores that during flares, higher photoelectron impact and irradiance flux drive the production processes, leading to enhanced emissions. The case studies emphasize, for the first time, the significant influence of flares on the Martian dayside near-terminator region, advancing our deeper understanding the impact of varying solar flare intensities to the planetary atmosphere.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction between Mars and the solar wind is crucial for comprehending the atmospheric evolution and climate change on Mars. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the Martian plasma environment, global numerical simulations are essential in addition to spacecraft observations. However, there are still discrepancies among different simulation models. This study investigates how these discrepancies stem from the considered physical processes and numerical implementations. We compare two global multispecies MHD models: the "Sun model" based on the BATS‐R‐US code and the "Sakata model" based on a newly developed multifluid model MAESTRO. By employing the same typical upstream conditions and the same neutral atmosphere for current Mars, along with similar numerical implementations such as inner boundary conditions, we obtain simulation results that exhibit unprecedented agreement between the two models. The dayside results are nearly identical, especially along the subsolar line, indicating the robustness of MHD models to predict dayside interaction under given upstream conditions and ionosphere assumptions. The escape rates of planetary ions are also in good agreement. However, discrepancies remain in the terminator and nightside regions. Detailed numerical implementations, including inner boundary conditions, magnetic field divergence control methods, and radial resolutions, are shown to influence certain aspects of the results greatly, such as magnetotail configuration and ion diffusion.

Abstract:Abstract Ion escape to space through the interaction of solar wind and Mars is an important factor influencing the evolution of the Martian atmosphere. The plasma clouds (explosive bulk plasma escape), considered an important ion escaping channel, have been recently identified by spacecraft observations. However, our knowledge about Martian plasma clouds is lacking. Based on the observations of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft, we study a sequence of periodic plasma clouds that occurred at low altitudes (∼600 km) on Mars. We find that the heavy ions in these clouds are energy-dispersed and have the same velocity, regardless of species. By tracing such energy-dispersed ions, we find the source of these clouds is located in a low-altitude ionosphere (∼120 km). The average tailward moving flux of ionospheric plasma carried by clouds is on the order of 10 7 cm −2 s −1 , which is one order higher than the average escaping flux for the magnetotail, suggesting explosive ion escape via clouds. Based on the characteristics of clouds, we suggest, similar to the outflow of Earth’s cusp, these clouds might be the product of heating due to solar wind precipitation along the open field lines, which were generated by magnetic reconnection between the interplanetary magnetic field and crustal fields that occurred above the source.

Abstract:The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) is an ESA-CAS joint mission. Primary goals are investigating the dynamic response of the Earth's magnetosphere to the solar wind (SW) impact via simultaneous in situ magnetosheath (MS) plasma and magnetic field measurements, X-Ray images of the magnetosheath and magnetic cusps, and UV images of global auroral distributions. Magnetopause (MP) deformations associated with MS high speed jets (HSJs) under a quasi-parallel interplanetary magnetic field condition are studied using a three-dimensional (3-D) global hybrid simulation. Soft X-ray intensity calculated based on both physical quantities of solar wind proton and oxygen ions is compared. We obtain key findings concerning deformations at the MP: (1) MP deformations are highly coherent with the MS HSJs generated at the quasiparallel region of the bow shock, (2) X-ray intensities estimated using solar wind H+ and self-consistent O7+ ions are consistent with each other, (3) Visual spacecraft are employed to check the discrimination ability for capturing MP deformations on Lunar and polar orbits, respectively. The SMILE spacecraft on the polar orbit could be expected to provide opportunities for capturing the global geometry of the magnetopause in the equatorial plane. A striking point is that SMILE has the potential to capture small-scale MP deformations and MS transients, such as HSJs, at medium altitudes on its orbit.

Abstract:We use 62 electron density profiles collected by the Radio Occultation Science Experiment (ROSE), on MAVEN, when Mars was hit by CIRs and ICMEs close to aphelion (April 2021) and during two dust storms (June-July 2022) to examine the response of the Martian ionosphere to solar events and to solar events hitting during dust storms. We do so through three proxies - variation in total electron content between 80 and 300 km altitude, peak density, and peak altitude - of the aforementioned 62 ROSE electron density profiles, relative to a characterisation of the ionosphere through solar minimum leading to solar maximum, specific to local time sector and season, presented in Segale et al., (COMPANION). We observe an increased Total Electron Content (TEC) between 80 and 300 km altitude up to 2.5 x 10(15) m(-2) in April 2021 and up to 5 x 10(15) m(-2) in June-July 2022 compared to the baseline photochemically produced ionosphere. This increase in TEC corresponds mainly to increases in the solar energetic particles flux (detected by MAVEN SEP) and electron fluxes (detected by MAVEN SWEA). In addition to solar events, in June-July 2022, an A storm and a B storm were occurring and merging on the surface of Mars. We observe a raise in peak altitude in general lower than expected during dust storms, possibly due to high values of solar wind dynamic pressure (derived from MAVEN SWIA). From 31 ROSE profiles collected in this time period that showed both the M2 and M1 layer, we observe that, on average, M1 and M2 peak altitudes raise the same amount, suggesting that the thermosphere might loft as a unit during dust storms. During this time period, several proton aurora events of variable brightness were detected with MAVEN IUVS underlining the complex and multifaceted impact of dust activity and extreme solar activity on the Martian ionosphere.
