Abstract:Using data from the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Voltatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) and ESA Mars Express spacecraft, we show that transient phenomena in the foreshock and solar wind can directly inject energy into the ionosphere of Mars. We demonstrate that the impact of compressive Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF) waves in the solar wind on the induced magnetospheres drive compressional, linearly polarized, magnetosonic ULF waves in the ionosphere, and a localized electromagnetic "ringing" at the local proton gyrofrequency. The pulsations heat and energize ionospheric plasmas. A preliminary survey of events shows that no special upstream conditions are required in the interplanetary magnetic field or solar wind. Elevated ion densities and temperatures in the solar wind near to Mars are consistent with the presence of an additional population of Martian ions, leading to ion-ion instablities, associated wave-particle interactions, and heating of the solar wind. The phenomenon was found to be seasonal, occurring when Mars is near perihelion. Finally, we present simultaneous multipoint observations of the phenomenon, with the Mars Express observing the waves upstream, and MAVEN observing the response in the ionosphere. When these new observations are combined with decades of previous studies, they collectively provide strong evidence for a previously undemonstrated atmospheric loss process at unmagnetized planets: ionospheric escape driven by the direct impact of transient phenomena from the foreshock and solar wind.

Abstract:A unique event known as the disappearing solar wind (DSW), characterized by an extremely low-density solar wind stream, occurred at Mars on 2022 December 26–27. As this stream flowed past Mars, several properties of the Mars–solar wind interaction changed in response to the density drop. We utilize in situ plasma measurements from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft to examine heavy ion escape during this event. We find that escaping ions with energies above and below 30 eV responded differently to the reduction in solar wind density. High-energy ions experienced a decrease in flux, whereas low-energy ions experienced an increase, regardless of whether they were escaping through the plume or tailward channel. Furthermore, we observe a net reduction in the flux of plume escaping ions during the DSW period, primarily due to a considerable reduction in the high-energy component, which typically dominates plume escape. In contrast, the overall flux of tailward escaping ions increased during this period. These variations in heavy ion escape are mainly attributed to substantial reductions in solar wind dynamic pressure and momentum density. This paper provides new insights into the dynamics of heavy ion escape under an exceptional state of the Mars–solar wind interaction.

Abstract:Phobos 2 plasma measurements have revealed the solar wind deceleration upstream of the Martian terminator bow shock. Earlier studies have shown that the solar wind is decelerated and deflected in the Earth's foreshock region. At Mars, the solar wind decelerated more at duskside than at dawnside. At Earth the solar wind decelerates most upstream of the quasi-parallel bow shock in the foreshock region. In this paper, we investigate and compare the solar wind deceleration at Mars and Earth.

Abstract:We study the interaction of three solar wind structures, two stream interaction regions and one interplanetary coronal mass ejection, with Mars' plasma environment during 20‐27 November 2007. This period corresponds to the solar minimum between the solar cycles 23 and 24 which was characterized by very low values of the solar wind density and dynamic pressure and low IMF magnitude. During that time the Mars‐Express orbit was in the terminator plane, while the Earth, Sun, and Mars were almost aligned, so we use the ACE and STEREO probes as solar wind monitors in order to identify and characterize the structures that later hit Mars. We find that the passage of these structures caused strong variations of in the bow shock location (between 2.2 and 3.0 R M ), compression of the magnetospheric cavity (up to 45 %) and an increased transterminator flow below 2 R M (by a factor of ≤ 8). This study shows that during times of low solar activity, modest space weather phenomena may cause large variations of plasma flow at Mars.

It is assumed that Mars has a negligible magnetic moment, and a radiative equilibrium model, characterized by an exospheric temperature of 490°K, is adopted for the neutral atmosphere. The ionospheric structure is determined by integration of Maxwell's equations for a 3-component fluid, in combination with the equations for conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. It is demonstrated that a standing bow shock wave is required by the interaction of solar wind with the ionosphere. Profiles of various flow parameters, as well as electric and magnetic field profiles, are calculated, and the problem of how to extrapolate present results, which are strictly applicable only at the subsolar point, to other locations on the planet is discussed. The computed ionospheric structure is compared with the ionospheric profile observed by Mariner 4 and is found to agree satisfactorily. In particular, the dynamic model predicts a constant scale height of 29 km over an extensive altitude regime, in excellent agreement with the observed value. The dynamic scale height is smaller by a factor of 2 than the value computed under assumptions of photochemical equilibrium, a consequence of the pressure exerted on the ionosphere by the solar wind plasma. Abstract:Mars' dayside ionosphere is maintained primarily by ionization from solar ultraviolet photons and subsequent chemical reactions, with small contributions from other mechanisms such as impact ionization and charge exchange. In December 2023, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission observed the impact of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) on Mars' ionosphere, including strongly enhanced fluxes of suprathermal electrons. We show that this enhancement in suprathermal electron fluxes increased ion production from electron impact, so that dayside electron impact ionization rates exceeded photoionization rates during the ICME. This change in ion production mechanisms led to unusually high densities of the minor ions C+ and O++ . Space weather events are known to increase ion escape rates, so changes in ion composition during space weather events have important implications for atmospheric evolution. We show that scaling nominal loss rates to account for space weather may underestimate carbon loss from Mars' atmosphere.

Abstract:As incident solar wind encounters the martian upper atmosphere, it undergoes deflection particularly in the magnetosheath. However, the plasma flow exhibits asymmetrical distribution features within this transition region, which is investigated by employing a three‐dimensional Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model from an energy transfer perspective in this study. Simulation results reveal that solar wind protons transfer momentum to ionospheric heavy ions through motional electric field in the hemisphere where the motional electric field points outward from the planet. In the opposite hemisphere, solar wind flow tends to be effectively accelerated by ambipolar and Hall electric fields. The distinct dynamics of solar wind protons in both hemispheres result in the asymmetrical deflection. Furthermore, the extent of asymmetry grows as the cross‐flow component of the upstream interplanetary magnetic field increases, but diminishes as the density of the solar wind proton increases, contingent upon the energy effectively acquired from ambipolar and Hall electric fields.

Abstract:Solar wind plasma and magnetic data obtained near the Martian terminator bow shock by the TAUS energy spectrometer and the MAGMA magnetometer onboard the Phobos 2 spacecraft are analyzed. It is revealed that on average the solar wind stream is slowing down just upstream of the bow shock. Nearly inverse correlation is found between the values of the velocity decrease and the undisturbed solar wind density for the outbound (mostly quasi-parallel) bow shock crossings, while for the inbound crossings (mostly quasi-perpendicular) this correlation is observed only for the velocity decrease upstream of the shock foot. This result permits us to distinguish between the two possible reasons causing solar wind deceleration: (1) mass loading of the solar wind flow by planetary ions originating from the corona of Mars, and (2) solar wind protons reflected from the bow shock. The solar wind deceleration upstream of the bow shock foot turned to be approximately dawn-dusk symmetric. On the basis of the revealed relation between the velocity decrease and upstream solar wind density, a coronal density profile is deduced which is in agreement with earlier results for the subsolar region. According to this profile, the density of the hot oxygen corona of Mars might be similar to 3 times higher in the period of observations than the estimations of the "extreme" corona model suggests, even taking into account the possible contribution of the hydrogen corona to the solar wind deceleration effect.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The correlation between space environment conditions and the properties of escaping ions is a central topic of Mars research. Although empirical correlations have been visible in the data, a physics-based interpretation, rather than statistics-based pictures, has not been established yet. As a first effort, we investigate the electric field, the direct contributor to ion acceleration, in the Mars plasma environment from a hybrid plasma model (particle ions and fluid electrons). We use Amitis, a hybrid model combined with an observation-based ionospheric model, to simulate the Mars–solar wind interaction under nominal solar wind plasma conditions for perpendicular and Parker spiral directions of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The simulations show following results: (1) the electric field morphology is structured by the IMF direction and the different plasma domains in the solar wind–Mars interaction; (2) asymmetry of the electric field between the hemispheres where the convective electric field points inward and outward, respectively, due to the mass loading and asymmetric draping of the magnetic field lines; (3) the motional electric field dominates in most regions, especially in the dayside magnetosheath; and (4) the Hall term is an order of magnitude weaker and significant in the magnetotail and plasma boundaries for a perpendicular IMF case. The Hall term is relatively stronger for the Parker spiral case. (5) The ambipolar electric field, in principle, agrees with Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution measurements in the magnetosheath.

Impact of solar wind disappearance event on the Martian nightside ionospheric species: First results

Abstract:The impact of a rarest solar wind phenomenon [disappearing solar wind (DSW) event during 26-28 December 2022] on the Martian nightside ionosphere is investigated, for the first time, using MAVEN datasets. During an extremely low solar wind density, the Martian top nightside ionospheric species underwent significant enhancements. At a given altitude, the density of electron increased by ~2.5 times, while for ions (NO+, O2+, CO2+, C+, N+, O+, and OH+), it increased by >10 times, respectively, compared to their typical average quiet-time periods. The extremely low dynamic pressure during the DSW event, contrasting with relatively higher nightside ionospheric thermal pressure nearly by an order, suggests an upward ionospheric expansion as a direct consequence. This causes an increased topside ionospheric density. Additionally, the day-to-night plasma transport may also be a contributing factor to increased plasma density. Thus, this study presents a new insight about planetary atmosphere/ionosphere response to the rarest event.

Abstract:We present results, obtained by several instruments onboard NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft, that show that the interaction region of the solar wind and the Martian upper atmosphere coincides with intense plasma wave activity. The turbulence region features nonlinear structures, identified as ion phase‐space holes and double layers, that emerge in the saturation phase of instabilities in the ion‐acoustic frequency range. One‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell simulations suggest that the waves and the nonlinear structures are very effective in coupling the flowing solar wind and the Martian plasma. Specifically, the simulations show that the magnetic field‐aligned component of the solar wind protons decelerates by about 20% in temporal and spatial scales of the orders of ∼ 100 ms and several kilometers, respectively. The results thus suggest that the waves may play an important role in the interaction region.

Abstract:In this study we investigate that region of the dayside magnetosphere of Mars where we may expect that the shocked solar wind comes into direct contact with the planetary ions, and where energy and momentum transfer from the solar wind to planetary plasma may take place. It is our intention to analyse whether the dominant microphysical processes are similar to those observed in the equivalent regions of the magnetosphere of Venus, that is in the dayside mantle of Venus. In this study we present results obtained along the first elliptic orbit of the Phobos 2 spacecraft. Our first conclusion is that around Mars it is the magnetic barrier region that corresponds to the dayside mantle of Venus. In this region at Mars wave excitations are observed, dominantly in the 5 to 50 Hz region; accelerated heavy ions and electrons were also detected. The major conclusion of this study is that despite several observed differences in the way that Venus and Mars interact with the solar wind, the dominant plasma features in the magnetic barrier region of Mars and the dayside mantle of Venus are very similar, indicating that probably the underlying physics is also similar.

Abstract:The solar wind deceleration upstream of the Martian bow shock is examined using particle and magnetic field measurements obtained by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN). Mars lacks a strong intrinsic magnetic field so its upper atmosphere extends beyond the Martian bow shock and interacts directly with the solar wind. Neutral atoms in the Martian upper atmosphere can be ionized through several physical processes and then start to move with the solar wind flow to form pickup ions. In return, the solar wind is expected to slow down due to the momentum transfer to the pickup ions. The present study surveys the MAVEN solar wind measurements between 2015 and 2019 to evaluate the solar wind deceleration upstream of the Martian bow shock. Different from previous studies of solar wind deceleration, our analysis carefully excludes the solar wind deceleration in the shock foot region. The average solar wind deceleration obtained is about 0.7% of the initial solar wind speed, much smaller than the values given by previous studies. Further calculation using several reasonable Martian upper atmosphere density profiles demonstrates that the deceleration observed is consistent with the pickup ion mass-loading scenario.

Abstract:Using the data sets of Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN and OMNI for the period 2014 October 10–2020 February 14 and the heliocentric distance of 1–1.66 au, we investigate the statistical properties of solar wind upstream of Mars for the first time. The key parameters, including interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), proton density (N), bulk velocity (∣ V ∣), and dynamic pressure (P dyn), are surveyed with regard to variations of solar activity level and heliocentric distance. We find that the parameters ∣IMF∣, N, and P dyn monotonously decrease with heliocentric distance. Both ∣IMF∣ and P dyn are generally stronger at a higher solar activity level (F 10.7 ≥ 70 sfu), while such activity has little relevance to N. In contrast, ∣ V ∣ basically keeps a median of about 370 km s−1 and is insensitive to the solar activity level and heliocentric distance. We also find that the IMF upstream of Mars at the higher solar activity level has a much smaller spiral angle in the inward sector; thus, IMF seems “straighter” than that in the outward sector, although that is not so for the inward sector of the upstream of Earth. Our statistical survey can be used as a reference for upstream solar wind of Mars at 1.4 ∼ 1.7 au, and could benefit the studies on solar wind as well as the Martian space environment.

Abstract:The Analyzer of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms (ASPERA) on board the Mars Express spacecraft found that solar wind plasma and accelerated ionospheric ions may be observed all the way down to the Mars Express pericenter of 270 kilometers above the dayside planetary surface. This is very deep in the ionosphere, implying direct exposure of the martian topside atmosphere to solar wind plasma forcing. The low-altitude penetration of solar wind plasma and the energization of ionospheric plasma may be due to solar wind irregularities or perturbations, to magnetic anomalies at Mars, or both.

Abstract:While it has been recognized that solar wind dynamic pressure ( P d y ) enhancements have dramatic impacts on the Martian system, their characteristics have not been systematically analyzed due to the lack of upstream plasma observations. Simultaneous measurements of plasma and magnetic field made by MAVEN provide such an opportunity. In this paper, we analyze the distribution of solar wind dynamic pressure and the association of P d y enhancements with various solar wind structures using MAVEN data from 2014 December 6 to 2021 August 14, covering the declining phase of solar cycle 24 to the ascending phase of solar cycle 25. The results suggest that P d y above 2 nPa (4 nPa) occurs about 5.82% (0.59%) of the time. Stream interaction region (SIR) encounters, together with heliosphere plasma sheet (HPS) within SIR encounters, are responsible for 36.6% and 31.4% of the dynamic pressure enhancement events with P d y > 2 nPa and with durations > 10 min, respectively. It is also found that HPSs tend to occur in the leading portion of SIRs, causing an additional deceleration of the slow stream and an additional enhanced local compression in the interaction region. As a result, the P d y and the magnetic field strength reveal a faster and greater increase and recovery during the SIR with HPS events than they do during the SIR without HPS events. In addition, we compare these results with similar analyses based on the measurements from the Wind spacecraft at 1 AU.

Abstract:We report on observations made by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft, in the shocked solar wind‐ionosphere interface of Mars. We observe a strong asymmetry in plasma flow governed by the direction of the motional electric field. In the hemisphere, in which the motional electric field ∼−V × B is pointed outward the planet the solar wind flow is decelerated by the j × B force related to the magnetic field compression in the barrier. In contrast, in the opposite hemisphere, the solar wind flow is accelerated. The gain in velocity is about 100–200 km/s. The dynamics of ionospheric ions are also very different on both sides. Such an asymmetry implies very different patterns of the electric current closure and the electromagnetic forces in both hemispheres.
