Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of formation and kinetics of hot OH molecules in the upper atmosphere of Mars produced in reactions of thermal molecular hydrogen and energetic oxygen atoms. Two major sources of energetic O considered are the photochemical production, via dissociative recombination of O2+ ions, and energizing collisions with fast atoms produced by the precipitating Solar Wind (SW) ions, mostly H+ and He2+, and energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) originating in the charge-exchange collisions between the SW ions and atmospheric gases. Energizing collisions of O with atmospheric secondary hot atoms, induced by precipitating SW ions and ENAs, are also included in our consideration. The non-thermal reaction O + H2(v, j) → H + OH(v′, j′) is described using recent quantum-mechanical state-to-state cross sections, which allow us to predict non-equilibrium distributions of excited rotational and vibrational states (v′, j′) of OH and expected emission spectra. A fraction of produced translationally hot OH is sufficiently energetic to overcome Mars’ gravitational potential and escape into space, contributing to the hot corona. We estimate its total escape flux from the dayside of Mars for low solar activity conditions at about 1.1 × 1023 s−1, or about 0.1% of the total escape rate of atomic O and H. The described non-thermal OH production mechanism is general and expected to contribute to the evolution of atmospheres of the planets, satellites, and exoplanets with similar atmospheric compositions.

Abstract:Atmospheric escape is a fundamental process in the long-term habitability evolution of terrestrial planets. Recent observations on Mars have found the concurrence of the severe ionospheric erosion and the large-amplitude, quasi-perpendicular magnetosonic waves. However, whether and then how these magnetosonic waves had contributed to the ionospheric erosion remains unclear. Here we propose a new candidate mechanism, electron Landau heating by magnetosonic waves, for the Martian ionospheric erosion. In contrast to the cyclotron resonance with oxygen atomic and molecular ions above the escape energies, the magnetosonic waves Landau-resonate with the thermal electrons at energy channels of the order of 0.01-0.1 eV. Through the Landau resonance over tens of minutes, the large-amplitude (12 nT) magnetosonic waves can heat the topside ionospheric electrons to similar to 2 times the normal temperature. The topside ionospheric electron heating could result in the enhancement of the ambipolar electric potential and eventually facilitate the escape of ionospheric plasma.

Heavy Ion Escape from Martian Wake Enhanced by Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:Mars is a dry planet with a history of a warm and wet environment. Hydrogen and oxygen continuously escape from the unmagnetized planet. Although the heavy ion escape rate in the wake region is low due to Mars' obstruction, there are reports of events with bursty and enhanced ion escape. Here, we first find the evidence of the Alfvenic dayside‐produced plasma clouds accelerated by magnetic reconnection, which provides an explanation for the wake bursty mass escape by the observations from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. In the event reported by this study, two types of flux ropes were successively observed in the magnetic reconnection exhaust in the Martian wake. One is generated by the reconnection, while others are produced by dayside boundary instability. The ions convected from the dayside, as well as the local original ions, can both be accelerated to be Alfvenic and expelled in the Martian tail by reconnection. The oxygen escape rate in the reconnection exhaust is estimated to be a quarter of the previous statistical result in the entire wake region.
Dust storm-enhanced gravity wave activity in the Martian thermosphere observed by MAVEN and implication for atmospheric escape

Abstract:Lower atmospheric global dust storms affect the small- and large-scale weather and variability of the whole Martian atmosphere. Analysis of the CO$_2$ density data from the Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer instrument (NGIMS) on board NASA's Mars Atmosphere Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft show a remarkable increase of GW-induced density fluctuations in the thermosphere during the 2018 major dust storm with distinct latitude and local time variability. The mean thermospheric GW activity increases by a factor of two during the storm event. The magnitude of relative density perturbations is around 20% on average and 40% locally. One and a half months later, the GW activity gradually decreases. Enhanced temperature disturbances in the Martian thermosphere can facilitate atmospheric escape. For the first time, we estimate that, for a 20% and 40% GW-induced disturbances, the net increase of Jeans escape flux of hydrogen is a factor of 1.3 and 2, respectively.

Abstract:With a Monte-Carlo model we investigate the escape of hot oxygen and carbon from the martian atmosphere for four points in time in its history corresponding to 1, 3, 10, and 20 times the present solar EUV flux. We study and discuss different sources of hot oxygen and carbon atoms in the thermosphere and their changing importance with the EUV flux. The increase of the production rates due to higher densities resulting from the higher EUV flux competes against the expansion of the thermosphere and corresponding increase in collisions. We find that the escape due to photodissociation increases with increasing EUV level. However, for the escape via some other reactions, e.g. dissociative recombination of O_2^+, this is only true until the EUV level reaches 10 times the present EUV flux, and then the rates start to decrease. Furthermore, our results show that Mars could not have had a dense atmosphere at the end of the Noachian epoch, since such an atmosphere would not have been able to escape until today. In the pre-Noachian era, most of a magma ocean and volcanic activity related outgassed CO_2 atmosphere could have been lost thermally until the Noachian epoch, when non-thermal loss processes such as suprathermal atom escape became dominant. Thus, early Mars could have been hot and wet during the pre-Noachian era with surface CO_2 pressures larger than 1 bar during the first 300 Myr after the planet's origin.
Impacts of Gravity Waves in the Martian Thermosphere: The Mars Global Ionosphere‐Thermosphere Model Coupled with a Whole Atmosphere Gravity Wave Scheme

Abstract:Gravity waves are a key mechanism that facilitates coupling between the lower and upper atmosphere of Mars. In order to better understand the mean, large‐scale impacts of gravity waves on the thermosphere, a modern whole atmosphere, nonlinear, non‐orographic gravity wave parameterization scheme has been incorporated into a three‐dimensional ground‐to‐exosphere Mars general circulation model, the Mars Global Ionosphere‐Thermosphere Model (M‐GITM). M‐GITM simulations utilizing the gravity wave parameterization indicate that significant gravity wave momentum is deposited in the thermosphere, especially within the altitude range of 90‐170 km. This impacts the winds in the thermosphere; in particular, M‐GITM simulations show a decrease in speed of the wind maximum in the summer hemisphere by over a factor of two. Gravity wave effects also impact the temperatures above 120 km in the model, producing a cooler simulated thermosphere at most latitudes. M‐GITM results were also compared to upper atmospheric temperature and wind datasets from the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft. Some aspects of wind data‐model comparisons improved once the gravity wave scheme was added to M‐GITM; furthermore, a cooler temperature profile produced by these new M‐GITM simulations for the MAVEN Deep Dip 2 observational campaign resulted in a closer data‐model comparison, particularly above 180 km. Overall, these modeling results show that gravity waves play an important role for the energy and momentum budget of the Martian thermosphere.

Nonthermal hydrogen loss at Mars: Contributions of photochemical mechanisms to escape and identification of key processes

Abstract:Hydrogen loss to space is a key control on the evolution of the Martian atmosphere and the desiccation of the red planet. Thermal escape is thought to be the dominant loss process, but both forward modeling studies and remote sensing observations have indicated the presence of a second, higher-temperature "nonthermal" or "hot" hydrogen component, some fraction of which also escapes. Exothermic reactions and charge/momentum exchange processes produce hydrogen atoms with energy above the escape energy, but H loss via many of these mechanisms has never been studied, and the relative importance of thermal and nonthermal escape at Mars remains uncertain. Here we estimate hydrogen escape fluxes via 47 mechanisms, using newly-developed escape probability profiles. We find that HCO$^+$ dissociative recombination is the most important of the mechanisms, accounting for 30-50% of the nonthermal escape. The reaction CO$_2^+$ + H$_2$ is also important, producing roughly as much escaping H as momentum exchange between hot O and H. Total nonthermal escape from the mechanisms considered amounts to 39% (27%) of thermal escape, for low (high) solar activity. Our escape probability profiles are applicable to any thermospheric hot H production mechanism and can be used to explore seasonal and longer-term variations, allowing for a deeper understanding of desiccation drivers over various timescales. We highlight the most important mechanisms and suggest that some may be important at Venus, where nonthermal escape dominates and much of the literature centers on charge exchange reactions, which do not result in significant escape in this study.

High-altitude gravity waves in the Martian thermosphere observed by MAVEN/NGIMS and modeled by a gravity wave scheme

Abstract:First high-altitude observations of gravity wave (GW)-induced CO$_2$ density perturbations in the Martian thermosphere retrieved from NASA's NGIMS instrument on board the MAVEN satellite are presented and interpreted using the extended GW parameterization of Yiğit et al. [2008] and the Mars Climate Database as an input. Observed relative density perturbations between 180-220 km of 20-40 % demonstrate appreciable local time, latitude, and altitude variations. Modeling for the spatiotemporal conditions of the MAVEN observations suggests that GWs can directly propagate from the lower atmosphere to the thermosphere, produce appreciable dynamical effects, and likely contribute to the observed fluctuations. Modeled effects are somewhat smaller than the observed but their highly variable nature is in qualitative agreement with observations. Possible reasons for discrepancies between modeling and measurements are discussed.

Abstract:A unique event known as the disappearing solar wind (DSW), characterized by an extremely low-density solar wind stream, occurred at Mars on 2022 December 26–27. As this stream flowed past Mars, several properties of the Mars–solar wind interaction changed in response to the density drop. We utilize in situ plasma measurements from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft to examine heavy ion escape during this event. We find that escaping ions with energies above and below 30 eV responded differently to the reduction in solar wind density. High-energy ions experienced a decrease in flux, whereas low-energy ions experienced an increase, regardless of whether they were escaping through the plume or tailward channel. Furthermore, we observe a net reduction in the flux of plume escaping ions during the DSW period, primarily due to a considerable reduction in the high-energy component, which typically dominates plume escape. In contrast, the overall flux of tailward escaping ions increased during this period. These variations in heavy ion escape are mainly attributed to substantial reductions in solar wind dynamic pressure and momentum density. This paper provides new insights into the dynamics of heavy ion escape under an exceptional state of the Mars–solar wind interaction.

A linearized coupled model of acoustic-gravity waves and the lower ionosphere at Mars

Abstract:Highly variable ionospheric structures were recently detected on Mars using spacecraft measurements. Acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) could be the underlying mechanism. Studying the response of the Martian ionosphere to AGWs could provide us with an important understanding of the neutral wave--ionospheric coupling processes. We developed a linearized wave model to explore the plasma--neutral coupling driven by AGWs in the lower ionosphere of Mars. This model can describe the propagation and dissipation of AGWs in a realistic atmosphere and is the first of its kind to incorporate plasma behaviors associated with photochemistry and electromagnetic fields. We adopted a full-wave model as the first part of our coupled model to delineate wave propagation in a realistic atmosphere. The second part of our model consists of the governing equations describing the plasma behaviors. Therefore, our model not only replicates the result of the full-wave model, but can also be used to investigate the wave-driven variations in the plasma velocity and density, electromagnetic field, and thermal structures. Our model results reveal that ions are mainly dragged by neutrals and oscillate along the wave phase line below sim 200 km altitude. Electrons are primarily subject to gyro-motion along the magnetic field lines. The wave-driven distinct motions among charged particles can generate the perturbed electric current and electric field, further contributing to localized magnetic field fluctuations. Major charged constituents, including electrons, O$^ $, O$_ $, and CO$_ $, have higher density amplitudes when interacting with waves of larger periods. The presence of photochemistry leads to a decrease in the plasma density amplitude, and there exists a moderate correlation between the density variations of plasma and those of neutrals. Our numerical results indicate that the wave-driven variations range from several percent to sim 80 in the plasma density and from sim 0.2 to 17 in the magnetic field, values that are consistent with the spacecraft observations. Further calculations reveal that the wave-induced plasma--neutral coupling can heat the neutrals yet cool the plasmas. Electrons are cooler than ions in the coupling process. The wave-driven heating by neutral--ion collisions exceeds that by neutral--electron collisions but tends to be lower than the wave dissipative heating and photochemical heating. Our model has potential applications in studying the AGW-driven variable ionospheric structures and can be used for other planets.

Climatological Gravity Waves in the Middle and Upper Atmosphere of Mars Based on ACS/TGO Observations

Abstract:Gravity waves (GWs) are important for the vertical coupling of the Martian atmosphere. The middle atmosphere is the key region where GWs propagate to the upper thermosphere and generate momentum and energy exchange, but the knowledge of middle-atmosphere GWs is incomplete, due to the lack of observations with the kilometer-scale resolution. We have analyzed the climatology of GW activity in the middle and upper atmosphere of Mars using 20–180 km temperature profiles measured by the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite instrument on board the Trace Gas Orbiter. The results show that the amplitudes of GWs extracted in this study are generally less than 15% and that the centers of the strongest GW activity vary significantly with the seasons. Second, the strongest GW activity in the mesosphere indicates the strong dissipation effects of the mesopause, and the mid-atmospheric GWs show a seasonal pattern that is stronger in the winter hemisphere. During the global dust event of MY34, the enhancement of GWs in the middle atmosphere is most pronounced at low and middle latitudes where the dust storms are active. It is possible that changes in the temperature structure of the middle atmosphere adjust the atmospheric circulation and thus improve the propagation of GWs. Furthermore, GW activity is stronger on the dayside than on the nightside, and there is no significant correlation between amplitudes and background temperature. This suggests a limited role of convective instability in limiting the growth of GWs in the middle atmosphere, with nonlinear damping competing with that of molecular diffusion at different harmonics.

Abstract:Using data from the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Voltatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) and ESA Mars Express spacecraft, we show that transient phenomena in the foreshock and solar wind can directly inject energy into the ionosphere of Mars. We demonstrate that the impact of compressive Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF) waves in the solar wind on the induced magnetospheres drive compressional, linearly polarized, magnetosonic ULF waves in the ionosphere, and a localized electromagnetic "ringing" at the local proton gyrofrequency. The pulsations heat and energize ionospheric plasmas. A preliminary survey of events shows that no special upstream conditions are required in the interplanetary magnetic field or solar wind. Elevated ion densities and temperatures in the solar wind near to Mars are consistent with the presence of an additional population of Martian ions, leading to ion-ion instablities, associated wave-particle interactions, and heating of the solar wind. The phenomenon was found to be seasonal, occurring when Mars is near perihelion. Finally, we present simultaneous multipoint observations of the phenomenon, with the Mars Express observing the waves upstream, and MAVEN observing the response in the ionosphere. When these new observations are combined with decades of previous studies, they collectively provide strong evidence for a previously undemonstrated atmospheric loss process at unmagnetized planets: ionospheric escape driven by the direct impact of transient phenomena from the foreshock and solar wind.
Novel Physics of Escaping Secondary Atmospheres May Shape the Cosmic Shoreline

Abstract:Recent James Webb Space Telescope observations of cool, rocky exoplanets reveal a probable lack of thick atmospheres, suggesting prevalent escape of the secondary atmospheres formed after losing primordial hydrogen. Yet, simulations indicate that hydrodynamic escape of secondary atmospheres, composed of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, requires intense fluxes of ionizing radiation (XUV) to overcome the effects of high molecular weight and efficient line cooling. This transonic outflow of hot, ionized metals (not hydrogen) presents a novel astrophysical regime ripe for exploration. We introduce an analytic framework to determine which planets retain or lose their atmospheres, positioning them on either side of the cosmic shoreline. We model the radial structure of escaping atmospheres as polytropic expansions - power-law relationships between density and temperature driven by local XUV heating. Our approach diagnoses line cooling with a three-level atom model and incorporates how ion-electron interactions reduce mean molecular weight. Crucially, hydrodynamic escape onsets for a threshold XUV flux dependent upon the atmosphere's gravitational binding. Ensuing escape rates either scale linearly with XUV flux when weakly ionized (energy-limited) or are controlled by a collisional-radiative thermostat when strongly ionized. Thus, airlessness is determined by whether the XUV flux surpasses the critical threshold during the star's active periods, accounting for expendable primordial hydrogen and revival by volcanism. We explore atmospheric escape from Young-Sun Mars and Earth, LHS-1140 b and c, and TRAPPIST-1 b. Our modeling characterizes the bottleneck of atmospheric loss on the occurrence of observable Earth-like habitats and offers analytic tools for future studies.
