Escape and Evolution of Mars's CO2 Atmosphere: Influence of Suprathermal Atoms

Abstract:With a Monte-Carlo model we investigate the escape of hot oxygen and carbon from the martian atmosphere for four points in time in its history corresponding to 1, 3, 10, and 20 times the present solar EUV flux. We study and discuss different sources of hot oxygen and carbon atoms in the thermosphere and their changing importance with the EUV flux. The increase of the production rates due to higher densities resulting from the higher EUV flux competes against the expansion of the thermosphere and corresponding increase in collisions. We find that the escape due to photodissociation increases with increasing EUV level. However, for the escape via some other reactions, e.g. dissociative recombination of O_2^+, this is only true until the EUV level reaches 10 times the present EUV flux, and then the rates start to decrease. Furthermore, our results show that Mars could not have had a dense atmosphere at the end of the Noachian epoch, since such an atmosphere would not have been able to escape until today. In the pre-Noachian era, most of a magma ocean and volcanic activity related outgassed CO_2 atmosphere could have been lost thermally until the Noachian epoch, when non-thermal loss processes such as suprathermal atom escape became dominant. Thus, early Mars could have been hot and wet during the pre-Noachian era with surface CO_2 pressures larger than 1 bar during the first 300 Myr after the planet's origin.

Abstract:Photochemical reactions in the martian exosphere produce fast atoms of oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen and provide large escape fluxes of these elements. They appear to play a crucial role in the evolution of the martian atmosphere. The relative outgassing rates of H(2)O and CO(2) on Mars are comparable with terrestrial values, although absolute rates for Mars are lower by a factor of 10(3). Nitrogen is a trace constituent, less than 1 percent, of the present martian atmosphere.

Abstract:Context. Photochemical escape of hot atoms is crucial to the long-term evolution of the Martian climate. For atomic C and N, photochemical escape is primarily driven by photodissociation (PD) of CO and N 2 . Aims. Combining the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) measurements of atmospheric neutral densities and solar EUV/X-ray irradiance, we perform a state-of-the-art analysis of atomic C and N escape on Mars. Methods. For each MAVEN orbit, we calculated the hot C and N production rates in the dayside Martian upper atmosphere via PD, from which the escape rates are estimated using a simplified technique to parameterize the respective escape probabilities taking into account multiple collisions with ambient neutrals. Results. The mean C and N escape rates are 1 × 10 24 s −1 and 9 × 10 24 s −1 , appropriate for low to moderate solar activity conditions, and thermospheric PD makes a larger contribution to the total N escape than to the total C escape. The above differences highlight the importance of nascent energy, with more energetic nascent escaping atoms able to survive collisions with ambient neutrals more easily, thus extending down to deeper regions of the atmosphere. Solar cycle variation in C and N escape is revealed by our analysis, whereas solar zenith angle variation is absent for both species. These results could be explained by the fact that the production of nascent escaping atoms responds to varying solar illumination angle at low altitudes where the escape probability is negligible, but responds to varying level of solar EUV/X-ray irradiance at high altitudes where the atmosphere is essentially collisionless.

Non-thermal production and escape of OH from the upper atmosphere of Mars

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of formation and kinetics of hot OH molecules in the upper atmosphere of Mars produced in reactions of thermal molecular hydrogen and energetic oxygen atoms. Two major sources of energetic O considered are the photochemical production, via dissociative recombination of O2+ ions, and energizing collisions with fast atoms produced by the precipitating Solar Wind (SW) ions, mostly H+ and He2+, and energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) originating in the charge-exchange collisions between the SW ions and atmospheric gases. Energizing collisions of O with atmospheric secondary hot atoms, induced by precipitating SW ions and ENAs, are also included in our consideration. The non-thermal reaction O + H2(v, j) → H + OH(v′, j′) is described using recent quantum-mechanical state-to-state cross sections, which allow us to predict non-equilibrium distributions of excited rotational and vibrational states (v′, j′) of OH and expected emission spectra. A fraction of produced translationally hot OH is sufficiently energetic to overcome Mars’ gravitational potential and escape into space, contributing to the hot corona. We estimate its total escape flux from the dayside of Mars for low solar activity conditions at about 1.1 × 1023 s−1, or about 0.1% of the total escape rate of atomic O and H. The described non-thermal OH production mechanism is general and expected to contribute to the evolution of atmospheres of the planets, satellites, and exoplanets with similar atmospheric compositions.

Nonthermal hydrogen loss at Mars: Contributions of photochemical mechanisms to escape and identification of key processes

Abstract:Hydrogen loss to space is a key control on the evolution of the Martian atmosphere and the desiccation of the red planet. Thermal escape is thought to be the dominant loss process, but both forward modeling studies and remote sensing observations have indicated the presence of a second, higher-temperature "nonthermal" or "hot" hydrogen component, some fraction of which also escapes. Exothermic reactions and charge/momentum exchange processes produce hydrogen atoms with energy above the escape energy, but H loss via many of these mechanisms has never been studied, and the relative importance of thermal and nonthermal escape at Mars remains uncertain. Here we estimate hydrogen escape fluxes via 47 mechanisms, using newly-developed escape probability profiles. We find that HCO$^+$ dissociative recombination is the most important of the mechanisms, accounting for 30-50% of the nonthermal escape. The reaction CO$_2^+$ + H$_2$ is also important, producing roughly as much escaping H as momentum exchange between hot O and H. Total nonthermal escape from the mechanisms considered amounts to 39% (27%) of thermal escape, for low (high) solar activity. Our escape probability profiles are applicable to any thermospheric hot H production mechanism and can be used to explore seasonal and longer-term variations, allowing for a deeper understanding of desiccation drivers over various timescales. We highlight the most important mechanisms and suggest that some may be important at Venus, where nonthermal escape dominates and much of the literature centers on charge exchange reactions, which do not result in significant escape in this study.

Abstract:Observations suggest that Mars was wet and warm during the late Noachian, which probably requires a dense CO2 atmosphere. But would a dense CO2 early Martian atmosphere have been stable under the strong EUV flux from the young Sun? Here we show that thermal escape of carbon was so efficient during the early Noachian, 4.1 billion years ago (Ga), that a CO2‐dominated Martian atmosphere could not have been maintained, and Mars should have begun its life cold. By the mid to late Noachian, however, the solar EUV flux would have become weak enough to allow a dense CO2 atmosphere to accumulate. Hence, a sustainable warm and wet period only appeared several hundred million years (Myrs) after Mars formed.

Abstract:Dissociation of water in the Martian atmosphere may supply oxygen to the surface and may result in the formation of minerals such as goethite, as proposed by Huguenin. The supply rate is limited by chemical processes in the atmosphere which regulate the abundance of O 2 . The net surface sink for atmospheric oxygen can be as large as 3.3 × 10 7 atoms cm −2 sec −1 which compares to the escape rate of 6 × 10 7 atoms cm −2 sec −1 .

Abstract:Ancient Mars might have been warm and wet compared to today, but climate models have trouble reproducing this warmth, partly because of the faintness of the young Sun and partly because of inherent limitations to CO2–H2O greenhouse warming. In particular, Rayleigh scattering of incoming sunlight by a dense, CO2-rich atmosphere leads to a high planetary albedo, thereby reducing the amount of sunlight absorbed by the planet. It has been recently suggested that the presence of 1–100ppmv SO2 in Mars' early atmosphere might have provided enough additional greenhouse warming to maintain a warm, wet early Mars. We show, however, that this warming should have been more than offset by cooling from sulfate and sulfur aerosols in early martian atmosphere. Hence, the paradox of Mars' early climate remains unresolved.

Abstract:Non-thermal escape of oxygen by recombination of exospheric O 2 + combined with diffusive separation of gases at lower altitude provides a mechanism through which the Martian atmosphere may be enriched in 18 O relative to 16 O. Measurement of the abundance of 18 O relative to 16 O together with a determination of the turbopause may be used to develop important constraints on the history of Martian volatiles. Models for the interpretation of these data are developed and discussed in light of present information.
Photochemistry of CO2in the Atmosphere of Mars

Abstract:The photochemistry of a carbon dioxide atmosphere is discussed in detail, and the analysis is applied to Mars. Recombination of O(³P) and CO is not sufficiently rapid to prevent the buildup of an amount of O2 in excess of the spectroscopic upper limit derived by Belton and Hunten (1968). A recombination scheme involving CO3 is proposed and is shown to be consistent with the O2 upper limit and abundance. CO3 is formed by a 2-body reaction of O(¹D) with CO2, and recombination occurs in a 2-body reaction of CO3 with CO. Ozone formation in a 3-body reaction of O and O2 is important and serves as an important mechanism for conversion of O(³P) into O(¹D), since O(¹D) is a product of O3 photolysis. Attention is directed toward the importance of CO2 absorption in the wavelength range 1670 to about 2000 A. This process is a dominant source of O below about 40 km on Mars. The abundance of O2 in the CO3 scheme is set by the requirement that the total dissociation rate of O2, mainly by radiation in the Herzberg continuum, should balance the formation rate of O2 in the upper atmosphere. This condition provides a simple explanation for the similarity between total abundances of CO observed on Venus and Mars. Some aspects of CO2 photochemistry with traces of water vapor are briefly discussed. The presence of species such as OH and HO2, produced in H2O photochemistry, can lead to very efficient catalytic action and consequent rapid recombination of O and CO. The precise role of hydrogen cannot be quantitatively assessed at present. Observations of resonance emissions from O and H should be valuable.
Oxygen Isotope Fractionation Due to Non-Thermal Escape of Hot O from the Atmosphere of Mars

Abstract:Secondary minerals in SNC meteorites from Mars exhibit O isotope ratios believed to be consistent with the non-thermal escape of O from the atmosphere. The primary source of the non-thermal O is the dissociative- recombination of O2+ in the ionosphere. I present here the results of a model that accounts for the probability of escape of non-thermal O isotopes due to collisions with overlying CO2, combined with a model for Rayleigh fractionation of the atmosphere remaining as a result of O escape. Previous analyses of MAVEN number density data have shown a strong variability with latitude and season of the heights of the homopause and exobase, with a mean homopause at 110 km and a mean difference of about 60 km. Rayleigh model results demonstrate a dependence on homopause height and on temperature profile and require a more accurate calculation of fractionation factors for the Rayleigh equation. Isothermal temperature profiles yield much smaller variation in 17O with homopause height. These results demonstrate the need for a careful assessment of O isotope enrichment due to non-thermal escape both for the modern atmosphere and for the evolution of the atmosphere over the age of the planet.

Fully coupled photochemistry of the deuterated ionosphere of Mars and its effects on escape of H and D

Abstract:Although deuterium (D) on Mars has received substantial attention, the deuterated ionosphere remains relatively unstudied. This means that we also know very little about non-thermal D escape from Mars, since it is primarily driven by excess energy imparted to atoms produced in ion-neutral reactions. Most D escape from Mars is expected to be non-thermal, highlighting a gap in our understanding of water loss from Mars. In this work, we set out to fill this knowledge gap. To accomplish our goals, we use an upgraded 1D photochemical model that fully couples ions and neutrals and does not assume photochemical equilibrium. To our knowledge, such a model has not been applied to Mars previously. We model the atmosphere during solar minimum, mean, and maximum, and find that the deuterated ionosphere behaves similarly to the H-bearing ionosphere, but that non-thermal escape on the order of 8000-9000 cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ dominates atomic D loss under all solar conditions. The total fractionation factor, $f$, is $f=0.04$--0.07, and integrated water loss is 147--158 m GEL. This is still less than geomorphological estimates. Deuterated ions at Mars are likely difficult to measure with current techniques due to low densities and mass degeneracies with more abundant H ions. Future missions wishing to measure the deuterated ionosphere in situ will need to develop innovative techniques to do so.

Effect of O3 on the atmospheric temperature structure of early Mars

Abstract:Ozone is an important radiative trace gas in the Earth’s atmosphere and has also been detected on Venus and Mars. The presence of ozone can significantly influence the thermal structure of an atmosphere due to absorption of stellar UV radiation, and by this e.g. cloud formation. Photochemical studies suggest that ozone can form in carbon dioxide-rich atmospheres. Therefore, we investigate the effect of ozone on the temperature structure of simulated early martian atmospheres.With a 1D radiative–convective model, we calculate temperature–pressure profiles for a 1bar carbon dioxide atmosphere containing various amounts of ozone. These ozone profiles are fixed, parameterized profiles. We vary the location of the ozone layer maximum and the concentration at this maximum. The maximum is placed at different pressure levels in the upper and middle atmosphere (1–10mbar).Results suggest that the impact of ozone on surface temperatures is relatively small. However, the planetary albedo significantly decreases at large ozone concentrations. Throughout the middle and upper atmospheres, temperatures increase upon introducing ozone due to strong UV absorption. This heating of the middle atmosphere strongly reduces the zone of carbon dioxide condensation, hence the potential formation of carbon dioxide clouds. For high ozone concentrations, the formation of carbon dioxide clouds is inhibited in the entire atmosphere. In addition, due to the heating of the middle atmosphere, the cold trap is located at increasingly higher pressures when increasing ozone. This leads to wetter stratospheres hence might increase water loss rates on early Mars. However, increased stratospheric H2O would lead to more HOx, which could efficiently destroy ozone by catalytic cycles, essentially self-limiting the increase of ozone. This result emphasizes the need for consistent climate-chemistry calculations to assess the feedback between temperature structure, water content and ozone chemistry. Furthermore, convection is inhibited at high ozone amounts, leading to a stably stratified atmosphere.

A coupled model of episodic warming, oxidation and geochemical transitions on early Mars

Abstract:Reconciling the geology of Mars with models of atmospheric evolution remains a major challenge. Martian geology is characterized by past evidence for episodic surface liquid water, and geochemistry indicating a slow and intermittent transition from wetter to drier and more oxidizing surface conditions. Here we present a new model incorporating randomized injection of reducing greenhouse gases and oxidation due to hydrogen escape, to investigate the conditions responsible for these diverse observations. We find that Mars could have transitioned repeatedly from reducing (H2-rich) to oxidizing (O2-rich) atmospheric conditions in its early history. Our model predicts a generally cold early Mars, with mean annual temperatures below 240 K. If peak reducing gas release rates and background CO2 levels are high enough, it nonetheless exhibits episodic warm intervals sufficient to degrade crater walls, form valley networks and create other fluvial/lacustrine features. Our model also predicts transient buildup of atmospheric O2, which can help explain the occurrence of oxidized mineral species such as manganese oxides at Gale Crater. We suggest that the apparent Noachian--Hesperian transition from phyllosilicate deposition to sulfate deposition around 3.5 billion years ago can be explained as a combined outcome of increasing planetary oxidation, decreasing groundwater availability and a waning bolide impactor flux, which dramatically slowed the remobilization and thermochemical destruction of surface sulfates. Ultimately, rapid and repeated variations in Mars' early climate and surface chemistry would have presented both challenges and opportunities for any emergent microbial life.

DR-induced Hot Oxygen and Carbon Coronae of Early Mars

Abstract:The evolution of Martian atmosphere is a key aspect to understand the habitability of Mars in time. The distributions of neutral atoms above the exobase of ancient Mars (corona) is important for understanding the interactions between the corona and the solar wind, which could help improving our understanding of the evolution of Martian atmosphere. In this work, a 3-D Monte Carlo Model is built to simulate Martian corona in different period of Mars history based on thermosphere structure corresponding to 1, 3, 10, and 20 times present solar XUV conditions and dissociative recombination (DR) reaction profiles. DR reactions of O2+, CO2+, and CO+ are considered as the sources of primary O and C. Secondary O and C atoms, which are formed through collisions between primaries and background species. We will discuss the dependence of physical properties of Martian corona as functions of solar XUV flux and DR reactions. We will also discuss the potential importance of CO+ DR as a contributor to Martian corona.

Abstract:The loss of water on Mars to space largely occurs through the decomposition of water vapour after transport to high altitudes with the subsequent escape of atomic hydrogen. However, there are still open questions about the relative importance of water photolysis and ion chemistry as decomposition mechanisms. In addition, the relevance of seasonally recurring compared with impulsive vertical water transport driven by dust storms is not fully understood. Using photochemical modelling based on a synergistic dataset from three Mars orbiters, we show that water photolysis above the main region of cloud formation (above the hygropause) is the dominant source of hydrogen available for escape, significantly exceeding hydrogen production through ion chemistry. We also show that seasonally recurring transport dominates hydrogen escape over impulsive transport, suggesting that dust storms play only a minor role in atmospheric water loss. Modelled hydrogen escape rates show good agreement with available measurements, which demonstrates the importance of the mechanisms investigated here for improving quantitative estimates of long-term water loss on Mars.

Mars Hot Oxygen Density and Effective Temperature Derived From the MAVEN IUVS Observations

Abstract:Abstract The escape of hot oxygen atoms from Mars is important for the evolution of the planet's H 2 O and CO 2 inventories. Owing to the lack of data constraints prior to the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission, previous understanding of this key loss channel of the Mars atmosphere relied mostly on physics‐based models. Using the optical observations from the MAVEN Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) during 2014–2018, we perform the first inversion analysis of the coronal scans at 130.4 nm to quantify the density and effective temperature of the Mars hot oxygen corona. Our results indicate that the exobase densities of the hot oxygen atoms are ∼6.3–8.0 × 10 3 and ∼1.2 × 10 4 cm −3 during low and moderate solar activities, respectively, which agree well with recent empirical estimates using MAVEN's in situ measurements and, however, are about a factor of two higher than previous model predictions. The effective temperature varies only slightly between ∼4100–4500 K. The temperature and density variations with solar, seasonal, and dust conditions are consistent with previous models. Comparison with inversion results from IUVS limb scans indicates that the cold and the hot oxygen populations dominate below ∼200 and above ∼600 km, respectively, between which the kinetic distribution depends on both populations. Our results demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of extracting information about the Mars hot oxygen corona directly from optical observations, opening up a powerful means for monitoring the Mars oxygen escape on a global scale in future missions.

Hydrodynamic Escape of Mineral Atmosphere from Hot Rocky Exoplanet. I. Model Description

Abstract:Recent exoplanet statistics indicate that photo-evaporation has a great impact on the mass and bulk composition of close-in low-mass planets. While there are many studies addressing photo-evaporation of hydrogen-rich or water-rich atmospheres, no detailed investigation regarding rocky vapor atmospheres (or mineral atmospheres) has been conducted. Here, we develop a new 1-D hydrodynamic model of the UV-irradiated mineral atmosphere composed of Na, Mg, O, Si, their ions and electrons, includin molecular diffusion, thermal conduction, photo-/thermo-chemistry, X--ray and UV heating, and radiative line cooling (i.e., the effects of the optical thickness and non-LTE). The focus of this paper is on describing our methodology but presents some new findings. Our hydrodynamic simulations demonstrate that almost all of the incident X-ray and UV energy from the host-star is converted into and lost by the radiative emission of the coolant gas species such as Na, Mg, Mg$^+$, Si$^{2+}$, Na$^{3+}$ and Si$^{3+}$. For an Earth-size planet orbiting 0.02~AU around a young solar-type star, we find that the X-ray and UV heating efficiency is as small as $1 \times 10^{-3}$, which corresponds to 0.3~$\Mearth$/Gyr of the mass loss rate simply integrated over all the directions. Because of such efficient cooling, the photo-evaporation of the mineral atmosphere on hot rocky exoplanets with masses of $1\Mearth$ is not massive enough to exert a great influence on the planetary mass and bulk composition. This suggests that close-in high-density exoplanets with sizes larger than the Earth radius survive in the high-UV environments.

Abstract:A recent study by Ramirez et al. (2014) demonstrated that an atmosphere with 1.3-4 bar of CO2 and H2O, in addition to 5-20% H2, could have raised the mean annual and global surface temperature of early Mars above the freezing point of water. Such warm temperatures appear necessary to generate the rainfall (or snowfall) amounts required to carve the ancient martian valleys. Here, we use our best estimates for early martian outgassing rates, along with a 1-D photochemical model, to assess the conversion efficiency of CO, CH4, and H2S to CO2, SO2, and H2. Our outgassing estimates assume that Mars was actively recycling volatiles between its crust and interior, as Earth does today. H2 production from serpentinization and deposition of banded iron-formations is also considered. Under these assumptions, maintaining an H2 concentration of ~1-2% by volume is achievable, but reaching 5% H2 requires additional H2 sources or a slowing of the hydrogen escape rate below the diffusion limit. If the early martian atmosphere was indeed H2-rich, we might be able to see evidence of this in the rock record. The hypothesis proposed here is consistent with new data from the Curiosity Rover, which show evidence for a long-lived lake in Gale Crater near Mt. Sharp. It is also consistent with measured oxygen fugacities of martian meteorites, which show evidence for progressive mantle oxidation over time.
