Abstract:The catalytic activity of a series of Cu–Ce catalysts supported on carbon nanotubes was studied for NO reduction by CO. The 20 wt % Cu1:Ce3/CNT catalyst showed the highest NOx conversion of 96% at 220 °C in the presence of oxygen (O2/CO ≤ 0.6). The catalytic activity of the CNT-supported catalysts was significantly enhanced due to synergistic interactions between surface oxygen vacancies and Cu+ species in the CNT-supported catalysts. Shifting of redox equilibrium to right (Cu2+ + Ce3+ ↔ Cu+ + Ce4+) resulted in creation of more reduced state Cu+. In the presence of excess oxygen (O2/CO ≥ 0.6), the catalyst can effectively catalyze the CO–O2 reaction and the NO + CO reaction did not occur. Compared with Cu1:Ce3/CNT catalyst, Cu1:Ce3 catalyst supported on activated carbon showed lower activity due to the lower Cu+/Cu2+. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed, providing insight into the catalytic reactions between NO and CO.
Effects of Ce/Zr Ratio on the Reducibility, Adsorption and Catalytic Activity of CuO/CexZr1−xO2/γ-Al2O3 Catalysts for NO Reduction by CO

Abstract:Effects of Ce/Zr ratio on the physicochemical properties of CuO/CexZr1−xO2/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were investigated by BET, XRD, Raman and H2-TPR. The catalytic activity and the interaction between the reactants with these catalysts were compared by NO+CO model reaction and in situ FT-IR. The results suggested that the addition of ceria–zirconia mixed oxides significantly improved NO conversion and N2 yield due to dispersed copper species in proximity to ceria–zirconia. Especially, the ceria-rich catalysts displayed better performance in activity and reducibility than others, which would be resulted from the strong interaction among copper, ceria–zirconia and support. The IR results suggested NO reduction activity was correlated with the presence of Cu+ carbonyl species, and the catalysts with variable Ce/Zr ratios had no distinction at the adsorption type and rate of NO/CO at room temperature. However, on heating treatment would give distinct difference in CO2 intensity and the wavenumber of adsorbed nitrates. Simultaneously, the stability of these N- and C-containing intermediates contacted with alumina was influenced by the modified Ce/Zr ratio.
Constructing Efficient CuO -Ceo2 Catalyst for NO Reduction by CO: New Insights into the Structure–activity Relationship

Abstract:CuO-CeO2 based materials have been recognized as promising substitutes for precious metal catalysts in emission control field due to their superior redox property and low cost. Herein, by optimizing the deposition process of CeO2 and CuO onto gamma-Al2O3, highly dispersed CuO clusters on unique CeO2-Al2O3 support with small CeO2 particles (7Cu-Ce/CeAl) were successfully constructed for efficient NO reduction by CO, which exhibited much higher NO removal efficiency and N2 selectivity than CuO catalysts supported on gamma-Al2O3 (7Cu/Al) and con-ventional CeO2-Al2O3 support (7Cu/CeAl). Moreover, H2O showed limited inhibition effect on the catalytic performance of 7Cu-Ce/CeAl catalyst. With the help of Raman spectra, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, etc., it was clearly revealed that the abundant Cu+/ Ce3+ paired sites with surface synergetic oxygen vacancies (SSOV) on 7Cu-Ce/CeAl catalyst could effectively facilitate the adsorption and activation of CO and NO, thus significantly enhancing the NO removal efficiency.

Abstract:The copper oxide species in CuO/CeO2/Al–Zr–O catalysts showed evidently higher NO turn-over numbers for the catalytic NO reduction by CO at 300 °C than that in CuO/Al–Zr–O and CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. The introduction of ceria enhanced the catalytic activity of CuO/CeO2/Al–Zr–O samples and the NO turn-over numbers of every copper atom were not influenced by the ceria loading amount. The results suggested that the Al–Zr–O mixed oxide would be a potential support for the three-way catalysts and CuO/CeO2/Al–Zr–O would be promising catalysts for the elimination of NOx.
Influence of Supports Structure on the Activity and Adsorption Behavior of Copper-Based Catalysts for No Reduction

Abstract:The influence of supports (γ-Al2O3, t-ZrO2, CeO2 and Ce0.67Zr0.33O2) on the activity and adsorption behavior of copper-based catalysts was comparatively studied by BET, XRD, Raman, HRTEM, H2-TPR, in situ FT-IR and NO+CO model reaction. It was suggested that the incorporated copper species on ceria (111) surface were in an unstable five-coordination structure, and on t-ZrO2 were in the elongated environment, whereas on γ-Al2O3 were in a symmetrical and stable octahedral coordination. These dissimilarities naturally influenced the synergistic interaction between copper and supports, thus CuO/CeO2 catalyst showed the higher reducibility and TOF for NO reduction. In situ FT-IR of NO adsorption/desorption results revealed that compared with those adsorbed species on CuO/t-ZrO2 and CuO/γ-Al2O3, the chelating nitro, bidentate and monodentate nitrates over the ceria-rich phase catalysts were more active to desorb or transform, and hyponitrites were also identified on its surface above 100°C due to the formation of oxygen vacancy. Co-interaction of NO+CO results suggested that the adsorption type and reactivity of NOx species were dependent on the supports structure and temperature. The chelating nitro, bidentate and bridge nitrates over CuO/CeO2 surface were more active intermediates to react with CO at low temperatures due to its superior redox activity.

Abstract:High-dispersed surface anatase TiO2 modified CuOX-CeOX catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation method and their activities for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 were investigated. The structure of TiO2 was found to influence the interactions between active components and support, which enhanced the NO adsorption and oxidation on catalyst surface under optimal conditions, thus activated the fast SCR reaction at a low temperature of 100°C.

Abstract:Heterogeneous symbiosis and coexistence CuO-CeO2 catalyst is prepared by simple grinding method to explore the symbiosis effect and the influence of different ratios of CeO2 and CuO on the catalyst structure and catalytic performance. All samples were characterized using XRD, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, LRS, H2-TPR, XPS, in situ FT-IR, the catalytic performance of the catalyst is evaluated by the CO + NO model reaction. Among them, Cu1Ce2 catalyst shows excellent catalytic performance, and testing for SO2 or/and H2O resistance. In the catalytic reaction, Cu+ in the catalyst plays an important role, and it is related to the active site where the NO molecule dissociates. Combining all the characterization results, it is shown that the introduction of CuO in the two-phase coexistence catalyst can effectively improve the oxygen vacancy content and the catalytic activity. Simultaneously, we proposed a possible mechanism for two-phase coexisting catalysts of reduction NO by CO to further understand the catalytic process.

Abstract:A series of 3DOM Ce 0.8 M 0.1 Zr 0.1 O 2 (M=Cr, Sn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu) catalysts are synthesized and used in CO selective catalytic reduction of NO x . The results show that the NO conversion rate of 3DOM Ce 0.8 Cu 0.1 Zr 0.1 O 2 catalyst at a lower temperature (150 °C) is close to 50 %. Besides, 3DOM Ce 0.8 Cu 0.1 Zr 0.1 O 2 kept a stable NO removal efficiency within a wide range of GHSV and a long period of reacting time and exhibited remarkable resistance to both respectively and simultaneously H 2 O and SO 2 poisoning. At the same time, the formation of 3DOM structure not only improves the reduction performance and surface active sites of the catalyst, but also forms more oxygen defects and Ce 3+ in the catalyst due to the strong synergistic effect of metal ions and ceria, which improves the surface oxygen concentration of the composite oxide catalyst and further improves the catalytic activity. In addition, the doping of copper ions on the surface of 3DOM Cu-CZ catalyst can improve the activity of the catalyst and make it trapped by CO to form Cu + -CO, which plays an important role in NO + CO reaction at low temperature. The existence of oxygen vacancy at high temperature is beneficial to the activation of O 2 and the dissociation of NO in the process of CO oxidation. The reaction of NO + CO over 3DOM Cu-CZ catalyst follows L-H and E-R mechanism respectively.

Abstract:Activity measurements were made of the NO+CO reaction over a series of CuO/CeO2 and CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with various loading amounts of CuO at low-temperatures, XRD, TPR, UV–DRS and XPS were also used for the characterization of the catalysts. The results show that NO conversions have an intimate relation with the loading amount of CuO and the supports used at temperature lower than 200°C, and the activities decreased in the order: CuO/CeO2>CuO/γ-Al2O3>crystalline CuO. Under these reaction conditions, the activities of the catalysts strongly depended on the surface dispersed copper oxide species. When the temperature was increased to 300°C, NO completely conversed to N2 over the catalysts, which meant that the temperature had strongly influenced the reaction. The influence of the support on the activities of the supported copper oxide species was tentatively discussed in the view of the strong interactions between active components and the supports which significantly promoted the reduction of the surface dispersed copper oxide species.
Co Single Atoms and CoOx Nanoclusters Anchored on Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 Synergistically Boosts the NO Reduction by CO

Abstract:Assisted by density functional theory calculation, a novel catalyst is rationally developed containing dual active centers of Co single‐atoms and CoOx nanoclusters co‐anchored on Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 support, which synergistically boost the selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO, achieving above 99.7% NO conversion and 100% N2 selectivity with 5 vol% O2 at 250–400 °C, much better than most of the reported catalysts. Achieving high NO conversion and N2 selectivity in selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO (CO‐SCR) in a wide operating temperature window, particularly in the presence of high O2 concentration, remains a big challenge. Herein, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a catalyst is rationally developed with dual active centers consisting of both Co single‐atoms (SAs) and CoOx nanoclusters (NCs) co‐anchored on Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 support (CZO), which show above 99.7% NO conversion and 100% N2 selectivity at 250–400 °C under 5 vol% O2. DFT calculation and experimental results confirm a strong interaction among Co SAs, CoOx NCs, and CZO support. Co SAs enhance CO adsorption and accompany the oxygen vacancies (OVs) formation in CZO, while the CoOx NCs promote both NO conversion to nitrate intermediate and the breakage of the NO bond at OVs, thus synergistically boosting the N2 formation.

Preparation and Characterization of Ce 0.3 Ti 0.7 O 2 and Supported CuO Catalysts for NO+CO Reaction

Abstract:The Ce x Ti 1− x O 2 mixed oxides at different mole ratios ( x =0.1–1.0) were prepared by co-precipitation of TiCl 4 and Ce(NO 3 ) 3 . The structural and reductive properties of the Ce x Ti 1− x O 2 were affected by calcination temperature. At x =0.1–0.3, CeTi 2 O 6 phase was formed and mainly as amorphous after calcination at 650°C. At x =0.3, only CeTi 2 O 6 was formed after calcination at 750°C and CeTi 2 O 6 crystallized completely after calcination at 800°C. TPR analyses showed that the amount of H 2 consumption by Ce x Ti 1−x O 2 (650°C) (except x =0.1) was greater than that by single CeO 2 , and the valence of CeO 2 was the lowest (+3.18) at x =0.3. CuO/Ce 0.3 Ti 0.7 O 2 was prepared by the impregnation method and catalytic properties were examined by means of a GC micro-reactor NO+CO reaction system, BET, TPR, XRD, XPS and NO-TPD. It was found that CuO/Ce 0.3 Ti 0.7 O 2 calcined at 650°C had the highest activity in NO+CO reaction with 100% NO conversion at reaction temperature of 300°C, and at 650°C Ce 0.3 Ti 0.7 O 2 just began to crystallize. The catalytic activities were largely affected by the pre-treatment conditions. At low reduction temperature (100°C), CuO species was difficult to reduce. When high degree of reductions took place, both CuO species and Ce 0.3 Ti 0.7 O 2 reduced and thus a part of CuO species on the support surface would be covered. The XPS and NO-TPD analyses showed that CuO/Ce 0.3 Ti 0.7 O 2 had four NO absorption centers (Cu + , Cu 2+ (I), Cu 2+ (II) and Ce 3+ ). The CuO species involving in NO+CO reaction included Cu 2+ (I) and Cu + , and CeO 2 species (Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ ).
Investigation of the NO removal by CO on CuO–CoOx binary metal oxides supported on Ce0.67Zr0.33O2

Abstract:Binary metal oxides CuO–CoOx supported on Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (denoted as CZ, thereafter) catalysts had been characterized by XRD, LRS, UV-DRS, IR, TPR, in situ FT-IR and activity test for the removal of NO by CO. Results suggested that (1) both copper oxide and cobalt oxide (loadings ≤0.5 and 0.32mmol/100m2 CZ, respectively) were highly dispersed on CZ support; (2) the addition of cobalt species promoted the reduction of the dispersed copper oxide, and improved the activity of copper oxide supported on CZ due to the strong interaction between active copper oxide and cobalt oxide, which was dependent on the preparation procedure and the cobalt oxide content; (3) the reduction of NO by CO over these catalysts went through different mechanisms at low and high temperatures, which was related to the change of the active species during the reaction process; (4) the introduction of cobalt oxide altered the adsorption type of NO and CO on these catalysts, and oxidized the NO dimers into ionic NO3−1. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed to discuss the NO+CO reaction based on all these results.
Determination of Intrinsic Active Sites on CuO–CeO2–Al2O3 Catalysts for CO Oxidation and NO Reduction by CO: Differences and Connections

Abstract:Based on a CeO2-Al2O3 support (CA-T) prepared by two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method, an efficient CuO catalyst supported on CA-T (Cu/CA-T) was successfully developed, which showed better catalytic performance in CO oxidation and NO reduction by CO (NO + CO reaction) together with higher thermal stability than the CuO catalyst loaded on conventional CeO2-Al2O3 support (Cu/CA). Based on the results of HAADF-STEM, Raman spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, ex situ and quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and dynamic oxygen storage capacity (OSC) testing, etc., the microstructure of CuO-CeO2-Al2O3 catalysts, especially the state of Cu species, was systemically investigated. The mechanisms of CO oxidation and NO + CO reactions on Cu/CA and Cu/CA-T catalysts were collaboratively revealed. It was found that the CA-T support with smaller CeO2 particles could facilitate the formation of more highly dispersed CuOx clusters with better redox property. In CO oxidation, more active Cu+ species could be formed on Cu/CA-T under reaction conditions due to the higher reducibility of CuOx clusters on CeO2, which contributed to its superior CO removal efficiency. After aging, a significant decrease in CO oxidation activity was observed on Cu/CA catalyst, which was mainly resulted from the disappearance of highly dispersed CuOx clusters. In clear contrast, for aged Cu/CA-T catalyst, the highly dispersed CuOx clusters could be well preserved, well explaining its much higher catalytic activity and thermal stability than the aged Cu/CA counterpart as probed by the CO oxidation reaction. In NO + CO reaction, besides the formation of more Cu+ sites for CO adsorption and activation, much higher OSC function was also achieved on the Cu/CA-T catalyst. This was due to the higher concentration of surface oxygen vacancies and moderate strength of CuOx-CeO2 interaction on Cu/CA-T, which could effectively promote the NO dissociation into [N] for N2 formation and the transfer of dissociated [O] to CO@Cu+ sites to complete the CO depletion.

Abstract:A series of ceria modified CuO/gamma-Al2O3(CuO-CeO2/gamma-Al2O3) catalysts were prepared via stepwise impregnation (CuCeAl-SI) and co-impregnation (CuCeAl-CI) method and tested in the model reaction of NO reduction by CO. It was found that the influence of impregnation modes on the catalytic properties of CuCeAl samples mainly lies on the control of ceria particle sizes and modulation of the distribution of various copper species. In both impregnation modes, ceria was mainly spread on gamma-Al2O3 as small particles while copper species were highly dispersed. A quantitative estimation of copper species was tentatively provided via a combined surface acid leaching experiment and H-2-TPR characterization for the first time. The results showed that for CuCeAl-CI catalyst, about 55% and 25% copper species were dispersed on gamma-Al2O3 and nanosized ceria, respectively, while about 20% was migrated into ceria lattice during the calcination process. In contrast, in CuCeAl-SI sample, the corresponding values changed to about 25%, 70% and 5%, respectively. The synergistic effect between copper species and ceria can promote the improvement of catalytic performance, which results in higher activity of CuCeAl-SI than that of CuCeAl-CI catalyst. Abstract:This work is mainly focused on investigating the influence of preparation methods on the physicochemical and catalytic properties of CuO-CeO2 catalysts for NO reduction by CO model reaction. Five different preparation methods have been used to synthesize CuO-CeO2 catalysts: mechanical mixing method (MMM), impregnation method (IM), grinding method (GM), hydrothermal treatment method (HTM) and co-precipitation method (CPM). All of these samples were characterized by a series of techniques such as N-2-physisorption, XRD, LRS, H-2-TPR, ICP-AES, XPS, in situ FT-IR and NO + CO model reaction. The obtained results show that the catalytic performances of these CuO-CeO2 catalysts can be ranked by CuCe-IM > CuCe-CPM > CuCe-GM > CuCe-HTM > CuCe-MMM, which is in agreement with the orders of the surface oxygen vacancy concentration, reducibility and Cu+ content, suggesting that the synergistic effect between Cu+ species and surface oxygen vacancies of these CuO-CeO2 catalysts plays an important role in this model reaction. In order to further understand the synergistic effect, a possible reaction model is tentatively proposed.
Activities of supported copper oxide catalysts in the NO+CO reaction at low temperatures

Abstract:The activities of copper oxide supported on CeO2, γ-Al2O3 and ceria-modified γ-Al2O3 catalysts for the NO+CO reaction at low temperature (200°C) have been investigated. The results show that the activities of the surface-dispersed copper species are greatly enhanced due to the presence of ceria, whether it was used as a support or as the pre-dispersed species on γ-Al2O3. The activities decrease in the order: CuO/CeO2>CuO/CeO2/γ-Al2O3>CuO/γ-Al2O3. For the CuO/CeO2/γ-Al2O3 catalysts, it is shown that NO conversions are not improved significantly with the increasing of CuO and/or ceria loadings, however, the turn-over number for the catalysts is found to be strongly relative to ceria loadings. By a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron spin resonance (ESR) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) results, the states and properties of copper oxide species, as well as the interactions among the surface-dispersed copper oxide species, ceria species and support, are also studied. All the results are tentatively discussed according to the incorporation model proposed previously.

Abstract:We developed a robust ternary PdO-CeO2-OMS-2 catalyst with excellent catalytic performance in the selective reduction of NO with CO using a strategy based on combining components that synergistically interact leading to an effective abatement of these toxic gases. The catalyst affords 100% selectivity to N2 at the nearly full conversion of NO and CO at 250 °C, high stability in the presence of H2O, and a remarkable SO2 tolerance. To unravel the origin of the excellent catalytic performance, the structural and chemical properties of the PdO-CeO2-OMS-2 nanocomposite were analyzed in the as-prepared and used state of the catalyst, employing a series of pertinent characterization methods and specific catalytic tests. The experimental as well as theoretical results, based on density-functional theory calculations suggest that CO and NO follow different reaction pathways, CO is preferentially adsorbed and oxidized at Pd sites (PdII and Pd0), while NO decomposes on the ceria surface. Lattice oxygen vacancies at the interfacial perimeter of PdO-CeO2 and PdO-OMS-2, and the diffusion of oxygen and oxygen vacancies are proposed to play a critical role in this multicenter reaction system.

Abstract:Abstract Basic oxygen furnace steelmaking leads to the production of CO-rich off-gas. When CO and NO are combined in off-gas, selective catalytic reduction by CO (CO-SCR) effectively achieves the synergistic removal of both pollutants. In this paper, CuCe0.75Zr0.25Oy, MnCe0.75Zr0.25Oy, and FeCe0.75Zr0.25Oy catalysts are prepared and evaluated for their CO-SCR activity, and the results show that the reaction system needs to be anaerobic; thus, the CO-SCR reaction can be dominant. The T90 values of CuCe0.75Zr0.25Oy and FeCe0.75Zr0.25Oy are 200 °C and 223 °C, respectively. The activities of these two catalysts are higher than that of MnCe0.75Zr0.25Oy (T90 = 375 °C). Linear nitrate and bridged bidentate nitrate are the main intermediate species involved in NO conversion on the catalyst surface, and bidentate CO32− coordination is the main intermediate species involved in CO conversion on the catalyst surface. CuCe0.75Zr0.25Oy has high lattice oxygen mobility and is more likely to react with NO and CO. In the presence of oxygen, most CO is oxidized by O2, which increases continuously to 100%, 100%, and 98% for CuCe0.75Zr0.25Oy, FeCe0.75Zr0.25Oy, and MnCe0.75Zr0.25Oy, respectively; additionally, CO is oxidized by O2, and the CO-SCR reaction cannot be carried out.

Abstract:Supported copper oxide catalysts (CuO/Al2O3, CuO/ZrO2/Al2O3, CuO/ZrO2–Al2O3) were prepared from different procedures and tested in the catalytic reduction of NO with CO to investigate the effect of ZrO2 addition method. The catalysts were characterized by means of ICP, BET, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, XPS, FTIR of NO or/and CO adsorption. Activity results demonstrated that the addition of ZrO2 could improve catalytic performance, which is dependent on the addition method. The sequence of activity is CuO/ZrO2–Al2O3>CuO/ZrO2/Al2O3>CuO/Al2O3. Based on the results of composition and texture, CuO/ZrO2–Al2O3 sample shows more surface zirconia species and larger surface area than CuO/ZrO2/Al2O3. XRD and Raman results suggest amorphous ZrO2 and highly dispersed copper oxide species are mainly present in the ZrO2-added catalysts except for a few CuO crystallites in CuO/ZrO2/Al2O3. Highly dispersed copper oxide species strongly interacting with amorphous zirconia (Cu⋯O⋯Zr species) was observed in H2-TPR and XPS, which was considered as the origin of the enhanced activity. In addition, the adsorption type and configuration of NO was similar over these catalysts. However, CuO/ZrO2–Al2O3 sample shows the greater capacity to activate the adsorbed NO species than CuO/ZrO2/Al2O3.
