Abstract:Upgrading of bio-oil through catalytic hydrotreating was investigated with anisole as a model compound. Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites with nano-crystalline structure were successfully synthesized by a segmented steam-assisted crystallization method by tuning the rate of crystallization during the phase transforming between the amorphous structure and crystalline structure without using the organic template. The diffusional properties of ZSM-5 samples were investigated by catalytic cracking of 1,3,5-TIPB. Ni/hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts displayed an excellent performance in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass-derived anisole to cyclohexane in comparison with conventional Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst. The activity and selectivity were significantly improved by enhancing the accessibility of acidities. Anisole HDO mainly follows the anisole to benzene with metal sites by direct deoxygenation, then cyclohexane formed by hydrogenation.

Abstract:In this work, a series of ZrO2-supported Cu, Ni and bimetallic Cu-Ni catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and stability in the in situ hydrogenation and decarboxylation of oleic acid using methanol as a hydrogen donor. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was a Cu-Ni alloy that was highly dispersed on mixed m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2. The bimetallic Cu-Ni/ZrO2 nanostructures not only exhibited better catalytic activity for the conversion of oleic acid compared to monometallic Cu/ZrO2 and Ni/ZrO2 catalysts but also demonstrated good reuse performance. The formation of the Cu-Ni alloy facilitated the decarboxylation reaction and inhibited the cracking reaction, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The good stability of Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was primarily due to the good hydrothermal stability of the ZrO2 support.

Abstract:The Ni-Nb2O5 nanocatalysts have been prepared by the sol–gel method, and the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) performance of anisole as model compound is studied. The results show that Nb exists as amorphous Nb2O5 species, which can promote Ni dispersion. The addition of Nb2O5 increases the acidity of the catalyst. However, when the content of niobium is high, there is an inactive Nb-Ni-O mixed phase. The size and morphology of Ni grains in catalysts are different due to the difference of Nb/Ni molar ratio. The Ni0.9Nb0.1 sample has the largest surface area of 170.8 m2·g−1 among the catalysts prepared in different Nb/Ni molar ratios, which is mainly composed of spherical nanoparticles and crack pores. The HDO of anisole follows the reaction route of the hydrogenation HYD route. The Ni0.9Nb0.1 catalyst displayed a higher HDO performance for anisole than Ni catalyst. The selectivity to cyclohexane over the Ni0.9Nb0.1 sample is about 10 times that of Ni catalyst at 220 °C and 3 MPa H2. The selectivity of cyclohexane is increased with the increase of reaction temperature. The anisole is almost completely transformed into cyclohexane at 240 °C, 3 MPa H2 and 4 h.

Abstract:A series of Ni/HZSM-5 and Ni/HIM-5 bi-functional catalysts were synthesized and applied to the aqueous-phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenol. The Ni dispersibility and particle sizes were shown to be directly related to the porosity and crystal sizes of the parent zeolites, which further influenced the catalytic performances. The large pores and small crystal sizes of the parent zeolites were beneficial for dispersing Ni and forming small Ni particles, and the corresponding Ni/zeolite catalyst exhibited a higher phenol conversion and selectivity towards hydrocarbons. Importantly, the Ni/HIM-5 bi-functional catalyst exhibited a high activity (98.3%) and high selectivity for hydrocarbons (98.8%) when heated at 220°C for 1 h and is thus a new potential catalyst for the HDO of phenolics to form hydrocarbons in the aqueous phase.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of Ni/Al2O3 catalysts derived from layered double hydroxide precursors with nickel ions incorporated into the brucite-like layers was investigated for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of anisole as a model compound of the lignin. Upon calcination and subsequent reduction, the well-crystallized phase and highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles (3 similar to 10 nm) on the support were obtained. The catalysts exhibited high activity toward the hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds and the hydrogenation saturation of aromatic ring at low temperature (200-280 degrees C) and appropriate hydrogen pressure (2 MPa). The activity and selectivity of these two main reaction pathways of anisole conversion were independent of the Ni content. And the direct cleavage of C-aromatic-O bond of anisole forming benzene as another parallel pathway prevails at increasing temperature. In addition, the catalysts are highly resistant to coking and easy to be reactivated by the utilization of the layered double hydroxide precursors.

Abstract:Ni-based catalysts supported on different supports (alpha-Al2O3, gamma-Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, and ZrO2) were prepared by impregnation. Effects of supports on catalytic performance were tested using hydrodeoxygenation reaction (HDO) of anisole as model reaction. Ni/alpha-Al2O3 was found to be the highest active catalyst for HDO of anisole. Under the optimal conditions, the anisole conversion is 93.25% and the hydrocarbon yield is 90.47%. Catalyst characterization using H-2-TPD method demonstrates that Ni/alpha-Al2O3 catalyst possesses more amount of active metal Ni than those of other investigated catalysts, which can enhance the catalytic activity for hydrogenation. Furthermore, it is found that the Ni/alpha-Al2O3 catalyst has excellent repeatability, and the carbon deposited on the surface of catalyst is negligible.

Abstract:Cyclohexanone is an important raw material for manufacturing nylon and other chemicals. The sustainable conversion of biomass derived molecules to cyclohexanone is desired but still challenging. Herein, a palladium single atom catalyst anchored in the micropores of zeolite (namely Pd 1 /ZSM-5) is designed and exhibits remarkable catalytic activity in transforming anisole to cyclohexanone in water medium (H 2 O), without using of organic solvent or halogen promoter. The selectivity to cyclohexanone is 91.2% and the turnover rate (TOR) is 400.8 h −1 at 453 K. The Pd sites, acid sites, and microporous confinement environment of zeolite cooperate to promote the partial hydrogenation to cyclohexanone, and inhibit further hydrogenation as the side reaction. H 2 O not only acts as the solvent, but also participates significantly in the partial hydrogenation. Moreover, as revealed by isotope labelled experiments (D 2 O and H 2 18 O), the water participated hydrogenolysis and the consequent partial hydrogenation mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Cyclohexanone was chosen as a model substrate to evaluate certain catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of aliphatic ketones in a fixed-bed reactor. The experimental results indicated that alkali-treated Ni/HZSM-5 exhibited excellent performance for this reaction. Two aspects of the catalyst are enhanced by alkaline treatment; the amount of strong acid sites on the catalyst is sharply reduced, and also a large number of mesopores are generated in the catalyst. The decrease of strong acid sites suppresses the formation of low-boiling products and aldol-condensation side products, while the mesopores improved hydrogenation and dehydration performances of the catalyst. These two aspects also promoted the catalyst's excellent time-on-stream performance. Additionally, generality of the catalyst is proved; most of the selected carbonyl compounds can be hydrodeoxygenated to the corresponding alkanes with selectivities of more than 97.0%.

Abstract:Monometallic Ni, Pd and Pt and bimetallic catalysts formed by combinations of the above metals supported on SBA-15 silica were synthesized, characterized and tested in the hydrodeoxygenation reaction of anisole. The objective of the work was to detect the effect of the nature of metals on the activity of the catalysts at different steps of anisole hydrodeoxygenation: hydrogenation of the aromatic ring of anisole and C–O bond cleavage in the intermediate cyclohexyl methyl ether. The support and the catalysts were characterized by N 2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and HAADF-STEM. The catalytic activity tests were carried out in a batch reactor at 280 °C and 7.3 MPa pressure. The activity results show that the NiPd/SBA-15 catalyst had the greatest ability for hydrogenation of the aromatic ring of anisole, while its NiPt/SBA-15 analog resulted in better activity for C–O bond hydrogenolysis. The bimetallic NiPt/SBA-15 catalyst showed the best catalytic performance in the HDO of anisole ascribed to the formation of a Ni–Pt alloy. On the other hand, the combination of Pd and Pt metals in the PdPt/SBA-15 catalyst resulted in the formation of bimetallic particles with Pd-rich and Pt-rich domains, showing high selectivity for the formation of the cyclohexyl methyl ether, which can be useful for the hydrogenation of aromatic rings in O-containing reactants with the formation of saturated O-containing products. According to the characterization results (HAADF-STEM), the different catalytic behavior of NiPd/SBA-15, NiPt/SBA-15, and PdPt/SBA-15 catalysts could be attributed to different characteristics of the bimetallic active phases in them.

Abstract:Herein, SiO2 supported metallic Ni (Ni/SiO2) and bimetallic Ni-Zn (NixZn/SiO2) (x represents the Ni/Zn atomic ratio) catalysts were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method and their activities were tested in vapor phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of anisole under 0.1 MPa. The characterization results show that Ni-Zn alloy forms in NixZn/SiO2 after reduction at 550 °C, and a suitable Ni/Zn atomic ratio (30) leads to smaller alloy particle size and consequently more H2 adsorption amount than others. In the HDO reaction, the formation of Ni-Zn alloy facilitates the direct deoxygenation pathway and suppresses CO methanation and C−C bond hydrogenolysis, which is ascribed to the isolation effect of the Ni atoms by the oxophilic Zn ones. Ni30Zn/SiO2 gives not only higher anisole conversion but also higher selectivity to benzene than Ni/SiO2. Therefore, the introduction of a suitable amount of oxophilic Zn in Ni/SiO2 promotes the HDO of anisole to benzene. Finally, we propose that the Ni30Zn/SiO2 deactivation is related to the oxidation of Ni-Zn alloy and carbon deposition on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:The effect of adding iron, cobalt or nickel to a prepared niobium-supported catalyst using mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a support was evaluated in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction of anisole, chosen as a model compound in lignocellulosic biomass derived bio-oil. HDO activity as well as selectivity toward O-free products were highly dependent on the catalyst formulation: Ni incorporation showed the highest anisole conversion and selectivity to deoxygenated products, followed by Co and Fe counterparts. The activity was explained in terms of acidity, metal surface exposure and reducibility as a function of the interaction between the phases present. Regarding the characterization results, the better performance of NiNb/SBA-15 was associated with its lower acidity, higher Nb/Si surface exposure, NbO2/Nb2O5 ratio and better interaction between Ni and Nb species.

Abstract:Zeolites (Hβ, HZSM-5 and HM), TiO 2 and ZrO 2 supported NiCo alloy catalysts were tested for the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol in aqueous phase. It has been found that the catalyst acidity remarkably influences the catalyst activity and the product distribution. Zeolites supported catalysts give much higher yield of the deoxygenated products (mainly benzene and cyclohexane) than NiCo/TiO 2 and NiCo/ZrO 2 , where cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone are dominating. Associated with NH 3 -TPD, we suggest that the catalyst acidity promotes the hydrodeoxygenation. Hβ zeolite supported NiCo alloy is more active than others, attributed to its higher metal dispersion and more acid sites. Therein, the Hβ zeolite calcined at 750 o C has moderate acidity, and its supported NiCo alloy catalyst (NiCo/HB-750) shows the best performance. Under a suitable reaction condition, the phenol conversion and the total yield of deoxygenated products reaches 96.8% and 94.5% on NiCo/HB-750, respectively.

Abstract:Alkylbenzene was observed during continuous hydrodeoxygenation of anisole in toluene. Besides acidic compositions, metals in catalysts play an important role in the transalkylation reaction during the HDO of anisole. Some metals (e.g. NiMo) that enabled partial hydrogenation could temporarily destroy aromaticity, resulting in a high yield of alkylated products. In addition, a high temperature facilitated transalkylation, while temperatures over 400 degrees C caused severe aromatic condensation.

Abstract:Fabricating zeolite-supported catalysts with excellent catalytic performance for hydroconversion of bio-oils into high-quality fuels is still a great challenge. Herein, hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites were successfully synthesized with 3-[(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] octadecyldimethylammonium chloride as a mesoporous template. The hierarchical ZSM-5 supported Pt catalysts (Pt/HZ-x) were used to enhance the hydrodeoxygenation of dibenzofuran into bicyclohexane, and the influence of acidity distribution on the reaction pathways was investigated by tailoring the Si/AI molar ratios (50, 75, and 100). For all catalysts, cycloalkanes were produced via the partial hydrogenation of the aromatic rings to generate tetrahydrodibenzofuran, followed by the cleavage of C-O bond. The optimal bicyclohexane selectivity (86.8%) was obtained on Pt/HZ-75 catalyst due to the good synergistic effect between metal dispersion and acid distribution. This catalyst also showed excellent stability because of its strong metal-support interactions. Even after reused five times, the catalytic activity was almost unchanged compared with the fresh one. Furthermore, the possible reaction pathways for conversion of dibenzofuran into bicyclohexane over Pt/HZ-x catalysts were developed.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of NiMoAl catalysts derived from layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursors with molybdenum species incorporated into the interlayers was investigated for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of anisole as a model compound of the lignin. The results showed that high dispersion of small Ni nanoparticles with 2–5 nm due to the pinning effect of Mo from Mo 7 O 24 6− intercalated the LDHs. Due to presence of the oxygen vacancy sites on the molybdenum oxide, the NiMoAl catalysts exhibit higher conversion of anisole than the corresponding NiAl catalyst. The activity for hydrodeoxygenation was enhanced with the increased content of molybdenum species, which can be attributed to the larger amount of acid sites-promoted removal of oxygen from anisole. In addition, the NiMoAl catalysts show higher resistance to deactivation than the NiAl catalyst, and can be broadly applied to other hydrodeoxygenation reactions.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of anisole, a methoxy-rich lignin model compound, has been investigated over a series of Ni-containing (10 wt% loading) catalysts with activated carbon, SBA-15, SiO2, and gamma-Al2O3 supports, in order to understand their ability for removal of -OCH3 from anisole. This catalytic reaction had been carried out in an autoclave at 180-220 degrees C and 0.5-3.0 MPa H-2 pressure. Nickel-catalyzed aromatic ring-hydrogenation compared with the subsequent demethylation and deoxygenation is the fastest step in HDO of anisole under the present reaction conditions. Among these catalysts, the aromatic ring-saturated cyclohexyl methyl ether is mainly obtained over Ni/AC, while the Ni/SiO2 displayed the highest activity in HDO of anisole (selectivity to deoxygenated products >95%). Differences in HDO efficiency among the catalysts are attributed not only to variations in the dispersion of the active phase, but also to the acid sites which may contribute to the cleavage of C-O bonds. It has also been shown that the activity toward oxygen-removal strongly depended on reaction temperature and the conversion of anisole favors the production of oxygen-free aromatics by the direct demethoxylation pathway at the relatively low H-2 pressure. Abstract:Hierarchical ZSM-5 with mesopores were derived from seed directing crystalline process. The efficient encapsulation of nickel metal was achieved by a simple incipient wetness impregnation method, and a stable Ni/hierarchical ZSM-5 hydro-deoxygenation (HDO) catalyst was fabricated. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRD, N-2-adsorption, FTIR, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD and TEM and were further tested for the hydrodeoxygenation of bio-derived guaiacol. Nickel particle size of about 6 nm and strong metal-support interaction were found for Ni/H-Z5 catalysts. It was discovered that the hydrodeoxygenation activity of the catalyst can be greatly improved by mesopores and strong acid sites. The reaction pathways were carefully studied to elucidate the effect of mesopores and acid sites. The Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst can be recycled seven times without loss of its initial selectivity.

Abstract:Developing highly active catalysts for bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation is of great importance in the low cost production of conventional transport alkane fuels. Toward this goal, a Ni catalyst supported on mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite mixed with 25 wt% γ-Al2O3 (Ni/Al-HMZSM-5) was designed for hydrodeoxygenation of phenol as model compound. For comparison, the catalytic activities of Ni catalysts on conventional microporous ZSM-5, mesoporous ZSM-5 and γ-Al2O3 were also investigated. It was found that almost complete phenol conversion (99.6%) was achieved over the Ni/Al-HMZSM-5 catalyst along with a high cyclohexane selectivity (98.3%) under a relatively mild condition (170 °C, 4 MPa H2). The open mesopores, stronger acid sites and synergism effect of Brønsted and Lewis acidities are jointly responsible for the excellent hydrodeoxygenation performance. In addition, it was shown that the catalyst was recycled several times with little loss of activity and selectivity.
