Abstract:In this paper, the relation between cooling rate and microporosity in the fusion zone (FZ) was discussed. As the cooling rate decreased, the content and size of microporosities increased. Lower cooling rate facilitated the ejection of solute atoms, resulting in an increase in the content of gamma/gamma' eutectic. More isolated interdendritic regions were filled with gamma/gamma' eutectic liquid during the solidification process, forming considerable microporosities under shrinkage stress. In addition, the dendrite arm spacing also increased with the decreased cooling rate. The coarse secondary dendrites accommodated more gamma/gamma' eutectic liquid. The microporosity size was proportional to the volume of gamma/gamma' eutectic liquid trapped in the interdendritic region. Therefore, high-content microporosities with large size appeared in the 3 + 3 joint. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.
