Abstract:Nanosized cobalt (Co) powders were prepared by one-step reduction of high-energy ball milled Co oxalate dihydrate precursors. The effects of ball-milling parameters on the particle size, morphology, and crystalline structure of the resultant Co powders have been investigated. The results show that ball milling led to significant spheroidization and size decrease of the Co powders. The energy release for the twins and dislocations induced by ball milling benefited the phase transformation from Co oxalate to face-centered cubic (fcc)-Co (i.e., CoC2O4 -> fcc-Co). With milling time increasing, a larger amount of the fcc-Co phase was obtained due to the higher deformation energy. Nanosized Co powders were achieved after ball milling for 45 min followed by a reduction at 430 degrees C for 3 h under a reducing protective atmosphere. The nanosized Co powders showed optimized characteristics with an average particle size of 50.18 nm and a proportion of 70.01% of the fcc-Co phase, which is higher than the values published in previous studies to date.
