Abstract:Directly growing perovskite single crystals on charge carrier transport layers will unravel a promising route for the development of emerging optoelectronic devices. Herein, in situ growth of high-quality all-inorganic perovskite (CsPbBr3) single crystal arrays (PeSCAs) on cubic zinc oxide (c-ZnO) is reported, which is used as an inorganic electron transport layer in optoelectronic devices, via a facile spin-coating method. The PeSCAs consist of rectangular thin microplatelets of 6-10 µm in length and 2-3 µm in width. The deposited c-ZnO enables the formation of phase-pure and highly crystallized cubic perovskites via an epitaxial lattice coherence of (100)CsPbBr3∥(100)c-ZnO, which is further confirmed by grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The PeSCAs demonstrate a significant structural stability of 26 days with a 9 days excellent photoluminescence stability in ambient environment, which is much superior to the perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs). The high crystallinity of the PeSCAs allows for a lower density of trap states, longer carrier lifetimes, and narrower energetic disorder for excitons, which leads to a faster diffusion rate than PeNCs. These results unravel the possibility of creating the interface toward c-ZnO heterogeneous layer, which is a major step for the realization of a better integration of perovskites and charge carrier transport layers.

Abstract:A unique aggregation-based crystal growth phenomenon of PbTiO3 nanodots on Si (100) substrate was observed. Compared to conventional nucleation and diffusion mechanism, a process of aggregation, self-assembly and coarsen process was found to facilitate the growth of PbTiO3 (PT) nanocrystals on Si (100) substrates. In addition, intermediates, which were constructed by self-assembly of Pb–Ti oxide nanocrystals, were observed during the crystal growth process on Si (100) substrates.

Abstract:Perovskite CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) have shown great promise in photocatalytic applications but their performance is still largely restricted by severe charge recombination, weak stability, and poor CO2 capturing ability. Herein, CsPbBr3 QDs were grown in situ into mesoporous SnO2 frameworks and a unique CsPbBr3 @SnO2 heterostructure with enhanced CO2-reduction activity and stability was designed. The experimental results and theoretical calculations indicated that the electrons in the CsPbBr3 @SnO2 heterostructure transferred in an S-scheme mechanism, which greatly promoted the charge transfer between CsPbBr3 and SnO2. Besides, the unique porous structure of SnO2 facilitated the CO2 adsorption on the surface of the CsPbBr3 @SnO2 heterostructure. Benefitting from these synergistic effects, the developed CsPbBr3 @SnO2 heterostructure behaved remarkable activity toward CO2 reduction, which was about 3.12- fold higher than pristine CsPbBr3 QDs. This study provides a new pathway to design perovskite-based heterojunction photocatalysts for highly efficient CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Inorganic perovskites featuring cesium lead tri-iodide (CsPbI3) have shown great potential in optoelectronic applications. However, CsPbI3 still suffers from poor crystal phase stability. Here, we compare the difference in the stability of gamma-phase (gamma-) CsPbI3 NC growth on thermally-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and iodine-modified rGO, and discuss the mechanism of the interface effect of active elements on the surface of rGO on the stability of gamma-CsPbI3 NCs. The results show that thermally-reduced rGO presents only the O-site on the surface of graphene, which leads to irregular shapes, low coverage, poor size distributions, and further a compressive stress of gamma-CsPbI3 NCs on it, which possesses an adverse effect on the phase stability. In contrast, iodine-modified rGO is beneficial for maintaining the phase stability and morphology of gamma-CsPbI3 NCs, and increasing their amounts on the surface of rGO, and further improving their optoelectronic properties due to the iodine modulation. More importantly, the active element on the surface of rGO changing from the O- to I-site leads to the stress state of gamma-CsPbI3 NCs converting into a tensile stress, which plays an important role in stabilizing the black perovskite phase of the NCs. Furthermore, we optimize the active iodine amount and concentration of the iodine-modified rGO to examine the interface effect and how it stabilizes the black perovskite phase of gamma-CsPbI3 NCs. The optimized gamma-CsPbI3 NCs/rGO heterostructured thin films showed a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 10.5% and retained approximately 80% of its initial PLQY after aging in air (25 degrees C and 25% relative humidity) under dark conditions for a month.

Abstract:Surface ligand engineering, seed introduction and external driving forces play major roles in controlling the anisotropic growth of halide perovskites, which have been widely established in CsPbBr 3 nanomaterials. However, colloidal CsPbI 3 nanocrystals (NCs) have been less studied due to their low formation energy and low electronegativity. Here, by introducing different molar ratios of surface acids and amines to limit the monomer concentration of lead–iodine octahedra during nucleation, we report dumbbell-shaped CsPbI 3 NCs obtained by the in situ self-assembly of nanospheres and nanorods with average sizes of 89 nm and 325 nm, respectively, which showed a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 89%. Structural and surface state analyses revealed that the strong binding of benzenesulfonic acid promoted the formation of a Pb(SO 3 − ) x -rich surface of CsPbI 3 assembly structures. Furthermore, the addition of benzenesulfonic acid increases the supersaturation threshold and the solubility of PbI 2 in a high-temperature reaction system, and controls effectively the lead–iodine octahedron monomer concentration in the second nucleation stage. As a result, the as-synthesized CsPbI 3 -S n NCs exhibited different assembly morphologies and high PLQYs, among which the role of sulfonate groups can be further verified by UV absorption and surface characteristics. The strategy provides a new frontier to rationally control the surface ligand-induced self-assembly structures of perovskites.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have shown exceptional optoelectronic characteristics and photovoltaic performance; however, their instability has limited their use in optoelectronic applications. Herein, we introduce a facile and effective in-situ synthesis strategy to prepare stable core-shell colloidal perovskite nanocrystal-polymer micelle composites (abbr. ap-POSS-PMMA-b3) by using amphiphilic copolymer (abbr. ap-POSS-PMMA-b-PDMAEMA) self-assembled "reverse micelle" templates. The amphiphilic block copolymer with hydrophobic (ap-POSS and polymethylmethacrylate, PMMA) and hydrophilic blocks (poly 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate, PDMAEMA) can be regulated to self-assemble into "reverse" micelles. The micelle serves as a confined nanoreactor during perovskite crystallization, which passivates the perovskite surface by forming a multidentate capping shell and yields the formation of multi-nanocubes with size between 6 and 8 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) that surpasses 60%. Benefitting from femtosecond transient absorption (fs TA) and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy studies, the excited carrier dynamics of the obtained composites substantiate fewer internal band-gap trap states from micelle-induced CsPbBr3 NCs. The films cast from these composites showed enhanced water-resistant properties as compared to bare NCs and previously reported encapsulated NCs. Therefore, the copolymer "reverse" micelle induced in-situ grown NCs provide a potential approach for further engineering the morphology of NC-based composites and open the door to potential scalable and robust optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:An in situ hot‐injection method is developed for the synthesis of colloidal CsPbI3/ZnSe nanoheterostructures, with a type‐I energy level alignment and high photoluminescence quantum yield of 96% due to effective passivation of surface defects and stronger quantum confinement of excitons. Producing heterostructures of cesium lead halide perovskites and metal‐chalcogenides in the form of colloidal nanocrystals can improve their optical features and stability, and also govern the recombination of charge carriers. Herein, the synthesis of red‐emitting CsPbI3/ZnSe nanoheterostructures is reported via an in situ hot injection method, which provides the crystallization conditions for both components, subsequently leading to heteroepitaxial growth. Steady‐state absorption and photoluminescence studies alongside X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy analysis evidence on a type‐I band alignment for CsPbI3/ZnSe nanoheterostructures, which exhibit photoluminescence quantum yield of 96% due to the effective passivation of surface defects, and an enhancement in carrier lifetime. Furthermore, the heterostructure growth of ZnSe domains leads to significant improvement in the stability of the CsPbI3 nanocrystals under ambient conditions and against thermal and UV irradiation stress.

In Situ Construction of a Cs2SnI6 Perovskite Nanocrystal/SnS2 Nanosheet Heterojunction with Boosted Interfacial Charge Transfer

Abstract:Heterojunction engineering has played an indispensable role in the exploitation of innovative artificial materials with exceptional properties and has consequently triggered a new revolution in achieving high-performance optoelectronic devices. Herein, an intriguing halide perovskite (PVK) and metal dichalcogenide (MD) heterojunction, i.e., a lead-free Cs2SnI6 perovskite nanocrystal/SnS2 nanosheet hybrid, was fabricated in situ for the first time. Comprehensive investigations with experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrate that cosharing of the Sn atom enables intimate contact in the Cs2SnI6/SnS2 hybrid together with a type II band alignment structure. Additionally, ultrafast carrier separation between SnS2 and Cs2SnI6 has been observed in the Cs2SnI6/SnS2 hybrid by transient absorption measurements, which efficiently prolongs the lifetime of the photogenerated electrons in SnS2 (from 1290 to 3080 ps). The resultant spatial charge separation in the Cs2SnI6/SnS2 hybrid evidenced by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) significantly boosts the photocatalytic activity toward CO2 reduction and the photoelectrochemical performance, with 5.4-fold and 10.6-fold enhancements compared with unadorned SnS2. This work provides a facile and effective method for the in situ preparation of PVK-MD heterojunctions, which may significantly stimulate the synthesis of various perovskite-based hybrid materials and their further optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have shown unique advantages compared with traditional optoelectronic materials. Currently, perovskite films are commonly produced by either multi-step spin coating or vapor deposition techniques. However, both methods face challenges regarding large-scale production. Herein, we propose a straightforward in situ growth method for the fabrication of CsPbBr3 nanocrystal films. The films cover an area over 5.5 cm × 5.5 cm, with precise thickness control of a few microns and decent uniformity. Moreover, we demonstrate that the incorporation of magnesium ions into the perovskite enhances crystallization and effectively passivates surface defects, thereby further enhancing luminous efficiency. By integrating this approach with a silicon photodiode detector, we observe an increase in responsivity from 1.68 × 10−2 A/W to 3.72 × 10−2 A/W at a 365 nm ultraviolet wavelength.

Abstract:Cs2SnI6 perovskite displays excellent air stability and a high absorption coefficient, promising for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. However, Cs2SnI6‐based device performance is still low as a result of lacking optimized synthesis approaches to obtain high quality Cs2SnI6 crystals. Here, a new simple method to synthesize single crystalline Cs2SnI6 perovskite at a liquid–liquid interface is reported. By controlling solvent conditions and Cs2SnI6 supersaturation at the liquid–liquid interface, Cs2SnI6 crystals can be obtained from 3D to 2D growth with controlled geometries such as octahedron, pyramid, hexagon, and triangular nanosheets. The formation mechanisms and kinetics of complex shapes/geometries of high quality Cs2SnI6 crystals are investigated. Freestanding single crystalline 2D nanosheets can be fabricated as thin as 25 nm, and the lateral size can be controlled up to sub‐millimeter regime. Electronic property of the high quality Cs2SnI6 2D nanosheets is also characterized, featuring a n‐type conduction with a high carrier mobility of 35 cm2 V−1 s−1. The interfacial reaction‐controlled synthesis of high‐quality crystals and mechanistic understanding of the crystal growth allow to realize rational design of materials, and the manipulation of crystal growth can be beneficial to achieve desired properties for potential functional applications.

Abstract:The crystal growth kinetics is crucial for the controllable preparation and performance modulation of metal nanocrystals (NCs). However, the study of growth mechanisms is significantly limited by characterization techniques, and it is still challenging to in situ capture the growth process. Real-time and real-space imaging techniques at the atomic scale can promote the understanding of microdynamics for NC growth. Herein, the growth of Pd NCs on monolayer MoS2 under different atmospheres was in situ studied by environmental transmission electron microscopy. Introducing carbon monoxide can modulate the diffusion of Pd monomers, resulting in the epitaxial growth of Pd NCs with a uniform orientation. The electron energy loss spectroscopy and theoretical calculations showed that the CO adsorption assured the specific exposed facets and good uniformity of Pd NCs. The insight into the gas-solid interface interaction and the microscopic growth mechanism of NCs may shed light on the precise synthesis of NCs on two-dimensional (2D) materials.
In Situ Growth of 3D/2D (CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5) Perovskite Heterojunctions toward Optoelectronic Devices

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) CsPb2Br5 exhibits intriguing functions in enhancing the performance of optoelectronic devices in terms of environmental stability and luminescence properties when composited with other perovskites in different dimensionalities. We built a type I three-dimensional (3D) CsPbBr3/2D CsPb2Br5 heterojunction through phase transition where CsPbBr3 quantum dots in situ grew into 2D CsPb2Br5. A thorough growth mechanism study in combination with excited state dynamic investigations via femtosecond spectroscopy and first-principles calculations revealed that the type I hierarchy enhanced the stability of the heterojunction and spurred its luminous quantum yield by prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. Mixing the heterojunction with other phosphors yielded white-light-emitting diodes with a color rendering index of 94%. The work thus not only offered one new avenue for building heterojunctions by using the "soft crystal" nature of perovskites but also disentangled the enhanced luminescence mechanism of the heterojunction that can be harnessed for promising applications in the luminescence and display fields.
Surface Reconstruction of CsPbBr 3 Nanocrystals by the Ligand Engineering Approach for Achieving High Quantum Yield and Improved Stability

Abstract:Oleylamine/oleic acid (OAm/OA) as the commonly used ligand is indispensable in the synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). Unfortunately, poor colloidal stability and unsatisfactory photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are observed, resulting from a highly dynamic binding nature between ligands. Herein, we adopt a facile hybrid ligand (DDAB/ZnBr2) passivation strategy to reconstruct the surface chemistry of CsPbBr3 NCs. The hybrid ligand can detach the native surface ligand, in which the acid-base reactions between ligands are suppressed effectively. Also, they can substitute the loose capping ligand, anchor to the surface firmly, and supply sufficient halogens to passivate the surface trap, realizing an exceptional PLQY of 95% and an enhanced tolerance toward ambient storage, UV irradiation, anti-solvents, and thermal treatment. Besides, the as-fabricated white light-emitting diode (WLED) utilizing the PNCs as the green-emitting phosphor has a luminous efficiency around 73 lm/W; the color gamut covers 125% of the NTSC standard.

Abstract:Direct assembly of high-quality single-crystal perovskite microarrays on transparent conductive substrates and carrier injection layers is vital to realize high-performance optoelectronic devices. Although cubic-phase CsPbBr3 is considered to have a higher structural and optical quality than the orthorhombic one, obtaining a well-aligned assembly directly on the aforementioned substrates is still challenging. Here we developed a solvent-assisted crystallization strategy with the assistance of surface modifiers, through which the in situ low-temperature growth of well-aligned cubic single-crystal CsPbBr3 microarray with a preferential out-of-plane [100] orientation is achieved for the first time on commercial transparent conductive substrates. As compared with the control orthorhombic samples, the cubic CsPbBr3 single crystals possess superior properties including a higher photoluminescence internal quantum efficiency, fewer defect states, a weaker scattering by phonons, and an appearance of lasing. The results presented here can pave the way for future design and applications of optoelectronic devices based on perovskite microarrays.
On-Substrate Fabrication of CsPbBr3 Single-Crystal Microstructures via Nanoparticle Self-Assembly-Assisted Low-Temperature Sintering

Abstract:The growth of all-inorganic perovskite single-crystal microstructures on substrates is a promising approach for constructing photonic and electronic microdevices. However, current preparation methods typically involve direct control of ions or atoms, which often depends on specific lattice-matched substrates for epitaxial growth and other stringent conditions that limit the mild preparation and flexibility of device integration. Herein, we present the on-substrate fabrication of CsPbBr3 single-crystal microstructures obtained via a nanoparticle self-assembly assisted low-temperature sintering (NSALS) method. Sintering guided by self-assembled atomically oriented superlattice embryos facilitated the formation of single-crystal microstructures under mild conditions without substrate dependence. The as-prepared on-substrate microstructures exhibited a consistent out-of-plane orientation with a carrier lifetime of up to 82.7 ns. Photodetectors fabricated by using these microstructures exhibited an excellent photoresponse of 9.15 A/W, and the dynamic optical response had a relative standard deviation as low as 0.1831%. The discrete photosensor microarray chip with 174000 pixels in a 100 mm2 area showed a response difference of less than 6%. This method of nanoscale particle-controlled single crystal growth on a substrate offers a perspective for mild-condition preparation and in situ repair of crystals of various types. This advancement can propel the flexible integration and widespread application of perovskite devices.
