Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which is currently prepared by catalyzing the oxidation of 5-hydroxyme-thylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased platform compound with broad market prospects. Herein, a detailed free-radical chain reaction mechanism consisting of both main and side reaction pathways was proposed to describe the liquid-phase air oxidation process of 5hydroxyme-thylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over a Co/Mn/Br catalyst. The higher reactivity of the hydroxymethyl group than the aldehyde group for HMF oxidation was first explained according to the retardation effect of alcohols on free-radical reactions and the reactive activity of active hydrogen on the two substituents of HMF. Considering the low stability of HMF, the possible side reactions including condensation, decarboxylation, decarbonylation, and ring-opening for HMF oxidation were further investigated. Subsequently, to obtain more reliable model parameters, a lumped kinetic scheme was developed considering only the formation of important and detectable reactants, intermediates, and products. Since the total reaction rate is not sensitive to the reactant concentration, a fractional kinetic model was adopted to correlate the experimental results and evaluate the kinetic parameters.

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:Catalytic in situ hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) has received a great interest in recent years. However, the issue of the consumption of expensive hydrogen donors, such as secondary alcohols, limits its applications. In this work, a ternary CuZnCoOx catalyst, exhibiting a 99% yield of DMF from in situ hydrogenation of 5-HMF with ethanol as economical hydrogen donor, is developed. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) reveal the synergy effect of each components. Reaction mechanism studies unravel the CoO x results in promoting in situ H-2 production from ethanol, the zinc oxide accelerates the aldehyde group (-CHO) hydrogenation to hydroxymethy] group (-CH2OH) and the formation of Cu-Co alloy significantly facilitate the hydrogenation of 5-HMF. Additionally, this ternary CuZnCoOx catalyst exhibits superior recyclability without losing any activity during 6 cycles experiment. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Biomass conversion offers an efficient approach to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. Electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted tremendous attention in the latest few years for the mild synthesis conditions and high conversion efficiency to obtain 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), but there still remain problems such as limited yield, short cycle life, and ambiguous reaction mechanism. Despite many reviews highlighting a variety of electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, a detailed discussion of the structural modulation of catalyst and the underlying catalytic mechanism is still lacking. We herein provide a comprehensive summary of the recent development of electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA, particularly focusing on the mechanism studies as well as the advanced strategies developed to regulate the structure and optimize the performance of the electrocatalysts, including heterointerface construction, defect engineering, single-atom engineering, and in situ reconstruction. Experimental characterization techniques and theoretical calculation methods for mechanism and active site studies are elaborated, and challenges and future directions of electrochemical oxidation of HMF are also prospected. This review will provide guidance for designing advanced catalysts and deepening the understanding of the reaction mechanism beneath electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Abstract:From the perspective of reaction kinetics, the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) reaction of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was studied in this work. Its hydrogenation product, 2,5‐dimethylfuran (DMF), was a stable and water‐insoluble biofuel alternative to gasoline. In this study, CuCoOx catalysts were used and 2‐propanol (IPA) was the hydrogen donor. The results exhibited that the HMF conversion reached 100% with the complete formation of DMF at 170 °C. Experimental and characterization results revealed that the balance of metal sites and acid sites was critical, which could inhibit the side reactions and enhance the yield of the target product. By adopting the Langmuir‐Hinshelwood‐Hougen‐Watson (LHHW) kinetic model, it was found that direct hydrogen transfer from IPA to HMF predominated over indirect transfer via H2. Moreover, the results revealed that the hydrogenolysis of BHMF to MFA was the rate‐limiting step. The kinetic study in this work is expected to provide valuable insights into the industrial optimization of the CTH reaction of HMF and lay the foundation for the study of hydrogen transfer pathways in this process.

Abstract:The catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived feedstocks to valuable chemicals generally requires catalysts with integrated active sites and tuned structures for selective activation of their multifunctional groups. Herein, we fabricated different Cu-based catalysts with multiple interfaces by facile reduction of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), aimed at controlling the reaction pathway and product selectivity in the hydrogenation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), an important biomass-based platform molecule. These Cu catalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman, TPR, HAADF-STEM, and in situ XAFS. For Cu/MgAlOx, derived from CuMg5Al2-LDHs, Cu particles were partially encapsulated by a MgAlOx support, thus forming highly intimate Cu-MgAlOx interfaces. On Co@Cu/CoAlOx, derived from CuCoxAl2-LDHs, together with a Cu-CoAlOx interface, partially reduced ultrasmall Co clusters were mounted around Cu particles to form a metallic Co-Cu interface, which is tunable by varying the Cu/Co ratio. As expected, Cu/MgAlO, was only active in C=O hydrogenation to produce 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (DHMF) in a 92.7% yield, while Co@Cu/3CoAlO(x) sequentially catalyzed the C=O hydrogenation and C-OH hydrogenolysis to yield as high as 98.5% 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), in sharp contrast to Co@Cu/5CoAlO(x), which further broke the C=C bonds of DMF to yield 83.6% 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF). The dependence of the reaction pathway and product selectivity on the composition and properties of the interface was revealed by identifying various intermediates using in situ IR. Specifically, HMF transformed into an O-bound intermediate on the Cu sites over the Cu-MgAlOx, while the unsaturated interfacial Cu-CoAlOx structure served as dual active sites to form a C,O-bound intermediate, thus leading to different products. In addition, the tunable Cu-Co interfacial sites remarkably influenced the adsorption modes of C=C bonds in the furan ring. This work provides a rationale for controlling the reaction pathway and product selectivity for complicated biomass reactions via the controllable construction of multiple interfaces.

Abstract:2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), a promising biomass-derived fuel, is synthesized via the hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). This study focuses on the inherent activity of a 5Pt5Fe/C catalyst for HMF hydrodeoxygenation to DMF. The catalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a remarkable DMF yield of 99.6 %. It displayed specific selectivity for C = O bond hydrogenation and CO bond cleavage in diverse substrates, producing high yield of 2-methylfuran from furfural and furfury alcohol, and high yield of toluene from benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol. In-depth characterizations unveiled valuable insights into the 5Pt5Fe/C catalyst's properties, emphasizing a harmonious balance between metal and acid sites due to the interactive synergy between Pt and Fe species, enhancing hydrodeoxygenation activity. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrated satisfactory stability, maintaining a commendable DMF yield over five reaction cycles despite observed changes.

Abstract:Cr-doped ZnAl mixed oxide catalysts (Zn0.75CrAl-x-c) were obtained via calcining the Zn0.75CrAl-x hydrotalcite precursors and were applied in the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Cr doping significantly enhanced the catalytic activity. A 95.1% 5-HMF conversion with an 88.1% FDCA selectivity was achieved over the Zn0.75CrAl-6-c catalyst at 130 °C under 0.6 MPa oxygen for 4 h. The good performance was associated with the high specific surface area and high oxygen vacancy concentration. Moreover, the Zn0.75CrAl-6-c catalyst was used for five cycles without a significant activity loss indicating excellent stability.

Abstract:A multimetal doping strategy has aroused extensive attention in promoting a non-noble catalyst for selective hydrogenation reaction. Herein, a multimetallic catalyst () with excellent catalytic performance for hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) is prepared through a facile, inexpensive, and efficient pyrolysis method. Using H2 as a H donor, extremely high selectivity (>99%) with 100% conversion is attained over the optimal catalyst. The subtle synergy between Co and Ni, Zn dopants, which remarkably promotes the performance of the Co-based catalyst, is revealed. In the system, Co0 is proven to be the main active site, whose content is greatly improved by Ni and Co dopants. Additionally, the Ni dopant could also benefit activation of H2 and the Zn dopant could enhance metal nanoparticle dispersion and the porous structure of the catalyst. In situ FTIR indicates that the vertical adsorption mode of FAL with the Oaldehyde terminal on ensures a selective hydrogenation process. With a N-doped carbon matrix, shows good cycling stability in five times run. is also competent in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of FOL, affording >99% yield with 2-propanol as a H donor. Abstract:A series of CuCoAl catalysts derived from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with adjustable Cu/Co ratios were prepared via a facile in situ structure topotactic transformation strategy. The comprehensive characterization results revealed that the introduction of Co element and the confined effect of LDHs jointly promoted the dispersion and stability of Cu species, as well as significantly increased the active specific surface area. Interestingly, Cu1.5Co1.5Al sample showed the superior performance for furfural (FF) hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol (FA) under the synergistic effect of Cu0 and Cu+ species, as well as the interaction between Cu species and the support. It allowed for FF conversion of 97.5% and FA selectivity of 99.7% (150 °C, 3 h, 2 MPa initial H2 pressure, isopropanol as solvent, m(FF):m(catalyst) = 60:1). Moreover, Cu1.5Co1.5Al displayed the satisfactory reusability, where the activity and selectivity kept stable after six successive recycling runs. Specially, it displayed the promising potential for the scale-up production. Furthermore, the mechanism study based on in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that the surface exposed Cu0 species could promote the H2 adsorption and then rapidly dissociated H2 into the activated H atoms, whilst Cu+ species were the active sites for FF selective hydrogenation in a η1(O)-aldehyde adsorption configuration.

Abstract:Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) has received great interest in recent years. Herein, Cu-Cs bimetallic supported catalyst, CuCs(2)-MCM, was developed for the CTH of FF to FFA using formic as hydrogen donor. CuCs(2)-MCM achieved a 99.6 % FFA yield at an optimized reaction conditions of 170 °C, 1 h. Cu species in CuCs(2)-MCM had dual functions in catalytically decomposing formic acid to generate hydrogen and hydrogenating FF to FFA. The doping of Cs made the size of Cu particles smaller and improved the dispersion of the Cu active sites. Importantly, the Cs species played a favorable role in enhancing the hydrogenation activity as a promoter by adjusting the surface acidity of Cu species to an appropriate level. Correlation analysis showed that surface acidity is the primary factor to affect the catalytic activity of CuCs(2)-MCM.
