Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:Biomass conversion offers an efficient approach to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. Electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted tremendous attention in the latest few years for the mild synthesis conditions and high conversion efficiency to obtain 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), but there still remain problems such as limited yield, short cycle life, and ambiguous reaction mechanism. Despite many reviews highlighting a variety of electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, a detailed discussion of the structural modulation of catalyst and the underlying catalytic mechanism is still lacking. We herein provide a comprehensive summary of the recent development of electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA, particularly focusing on the mechanism studies as well as the advanced strategies developed to regulate the structure and optimize the performance of the electrocatalysts, including heterointerface construction, defect engineering, single-atom engineering, and in situ reconstruction. Experimental characterization techniques and theoretical calculation methods for mechanism and active site studies are elaborated, and challenges and future directions of electrochemical oxidation of HMF are also prospected. This review will provide guidance for designing advanced catalysts and deepening the understanding of the reaction mechanism beneath electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Abstract:<p>Biomass is the sole renewable organic carbon resource in nature. Conversion of Biomass can produce a series of platform molecules. As an essential multi-purpose bioderived furanic platform compound, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives due to its rich chemistry and potential availability, which is an ideal renewable alternative to fossil fuels. This review highlights recent advances in the development of efficient catalytic systems for the conversion of HMF, especially heterogeneous catalysts. Heterogeneous catalysts have advantages in facile separation and recovery, tunable performance by adjusting catalyst structures. Simultaneously, we mainly focus on the application of downstream products in material monomers, pharmaceutical intermediates, and fuels. Furthermore, a few potential research trends are also proposed, in order to provide some useful ideas for the further exploration of the utilization and conversion of HMF in a much simple, efficient, and economical way.</p>

Abstract:Developing practical and scalable catalytic approaches for directly converting concentrated 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into value-added bio-based chemicals represents a major challenge in efforts to make the lignocellulosic biorefinery a sustainable and ecologically viable reality. We present here Ir/Na-ZSM-5 as a robust catalyst for efficiently producing 2,5-bis(methoxymethyl)furan (BMMF), a crucial compound for advanced biorefineries, through the reductive etherification of HMF. Benefitting from its unique structural features and the cooperative interaction between selective hydrogenation enabled by ultrasmall Ir nanoparticles and appropriate surface acidity resulting from alkali exchange, Ir/Na-ZSM-5 achieves impressive BMMF yields (91%) and maintains over 98% carbon balance from concentrated HMF (up to 22.6 wt.%) under mild conditions (50 °C, 1 MPa H2). Moreover, the catalyst displays outstanding stability with an unmatched turnover number during extended flow-reaction processes, underscoring its applicability for large-scale production.

Abstract:With increasing concern on reducing CO 2 emission, alleviating fossil resource dependence, catalytic transformation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a vital platform compound derived from C6 sugars, holds great promise for producing value‐added chemicals. Among several well‐established catalytic systems, hydrogenation and oxidation processes have been efficiently adopted for upgrading HMF. This review covers recent advances in the development of thermocatalytic conversion of HMF into value‐added chemicals. The advances of metal catalyzed hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, ring‐opening, decarbonylation and oxidation involved selective activation of C−O, C=O and C=C groups are described. The role played by nature of metals, supports, additives, synergy metal‐acid sites and metal‐support interaction are also discussed at the molecular level. Finally, an outlook is provided to highlight major challenges associated with this huge research area.

Abstract:2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), a promising biomass-derived fuel, is synthesized via the hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). This study focuses on the inherent activity of a 5Pt5Fe/C catalyst for HMF hydrodeoxygenation to DMF. The catalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a remarkable DMF yield of 99.6 %. It displayed specific selectivity for C = O bond hydrogenation and CO bond cleavage in diverse substrates, producing high yield of 2-methylfuran from furfural and furfury alcohol, and high yield of toluene from benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol. In-depth characterizations unveiled valuable insights into the 5Pt5Fe/C catalyst's properties, emphasizing a harmonious balance between metal and acid sites due to the interactive synergy between Pt and Fe species, enhancing hydrodeoxygenation activity. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrated satisfactory stability, maintaining a commendable DMF yield over five reaction cycles despite observed changes.

Abstract:The synthesis of fuels, fuel additives, commercial and potential products from the platform molecules generated by the hydrolysis of the lignocellulosic biomass is a promising strategy toward the utilization of renewable feedstocks. Significant advances have been made on the various transformations (e.g., hydrogenation, oxidation, aldol-condensation, rehydration, amination, polymerization, etherification and decarbonylation) of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). This review firstly gives an overview of these various transformations of HMF to produce a number of fuels as well as chemicals, wherein the fundamental aspects of reaction mechanisms, recent progress and challenges are highlighted, respectively. Different types of catalysts have also been summarized and compared in Tables. One objective is to comment the synthesis of value-added commercial and potential chemical (e.g., furan-based polyester platform 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF)). Another purpose of the review is to comment fuels and fuel additives, including gasoline blendstock 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), ethyl levulinate (EL), gamma-valerlactone (GVL), methylfuran (MF) and so on. These obtained chemicals could replace the products from petrochemical resources, reducing the CO2 emission.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an attractive biomass-based platform compound, holds significant promise as a renewable resource for the production of diverse value-added chemicals. Of particular interest is the selective oxidation of HMF, which enables the production of valuable compounds such as 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), and furan-2,5-dimethylcarboxylate (FDMC). Carbon-based catalytic materials have been recognized as highly effective carriers or catalysts in organic conversions, with their catalytic activity being easily modulated through compositional and structural modifications. This comprehensive review aims to provide a summary of recent advancements in utilizing carbon-based materials for the aerobic oxidation of HMF into DFF, FDCA, and FDMC in the past five years. Additionally, an outlook is presented to identify the challenges and opportunities in this fascinating and vital research domain.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfufural (HMF), one of the vital platform chemicals in biomass upgrading, holds great promise for producing highly valuable chemicals through sustainable routes, thereby alleviating the dependence on fossil feedstocks and reducing CO2 emissions. The reductive upgrading (hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, ring-opening, ring-rearrangement, amination, etc.) of HMF has exhibited great potential to produce monomers, liquid fuel additives, and other valuable chemicals. Thermocatalytic conversion has a significant advantage over photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in productivity. In this Review, the recent achievements of thermo-reductive transformation of HMF to various chemicals using heterogeneous catalytic systems are presented, including the catalytic systems (catalyst and solvent), reaction conditions, (reaction temperature, pressure, etc.), and reaction mechanisms. The current challenges and future opportunities are discussed as well, aiming at guiding the catalyst design and practical scalable productions.

Abstract:<p>Biomass conversion to value-added chemicals has received tremendous attention for solving global warming issues and fossil fuel depletion. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a key bio-based platform molecule to produce many useful organic chemicals by oxidation, hydrogenation, polymerization, and ring-opening reactions. Among all derivatives, the oxidation product 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising alternative to petroleum-based terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics. This review analytically discusses the recent progress in the thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic oxidation of HMF into FDCA, including catalyst screening, synthesis processes, and reaction mechanism. Rapid fundamental advances may be possible in non-precious metal and metal-free catalysts that are highly efficient under the base-free conditions, and external field-assisted processes like electrochemical or photoelectrochemical cells.</p>

Abstract:2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF) is a significant biomass-derived compound with diverse applications in novel furan-based materials, fragrances, fuel additives, and drug synthesis. A pivotal challenge in DFF synthesis is developing a method to produce DFF under mild conditions using sustainable feedstocks. In this study, an affordable 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPOL)- assisted Cu(OAc)2 catalytic system for aerobic oxidation reaction of HMF to DFF in liquid sunlight methanol solvent was developed. The effects of parameters such as metal species, catalyst amount, solvent species, ligand structure, and reaction temperature were systematically investigated. The evolution of product distribution in the reaction solution at various times was monitored and analyzed using 1H-NMR spectroscopy. FT-IR and ESI-MS characterizations were employed to integrate experimental findings and elucidate the reaction mechanism. The highest DFF yield of 96% and complete conversion of HMF were obtained. Furthermore, a total DFF yield of 68.6% was achieved from fructose using a two-steps method, demonstrating the potential for scalable production. The establishment of this catalytic system presents a novel approach for the selective preparation of DFF from sustainable feedstocks.

Due to the preferable catalytic activities of Co single atoms (Co1) and Co nanoparticles (Cop) for the oxidation of hydroxyls to aldehyde groups and aldehydes to carboxyl groups, respectively, the prepared (Co1→Cop)/N-CNTs exhibited good catalytic performance for the aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The catalyst achieved 100% HMF conversion efficiency and 96% FDCA yield under a 0.1 MPa O2 atmosphere at 100 °C for 8 h. The presented strategy offers prospects for the development of highly active catalysts for complex tandem reactions.
