Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.
Construction of N, O Co-Doped Carbon Anchored with Co Nanoparticles As Efficient Catalyst for Furfural Hydrodeoxygenation in Ethanol

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation of furfural(FF)into 2-methylfuran(MF)is a significant biomass utilization route.However,designing efficient and stable non-noble metal catalyst is still a huge challenge.Herein,we reported the N,O co-doped carbon anchored with Co nanoparticles(Co-SFB)synthesized by employing the organic ligands with the target heteroatoms.Raman,electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR),electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)characterizations showed that the co-doping of N and O heteroatoms in the carbon support endows Co-SFB with enriched lone pair electrons,fast electron transfer ability,and strong metal-support interaction.These electronic properties resulted in strong FF adsorption as well as lower apparent reaction activation energy.At last,the obtained N,O co-doped Co/C catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity(nearly 100 mol％FF conver-sion and 94.6 mol％MF yield)and stability for in-situ dehydrogenation of FF into MF.This N,O co-doping strategy for the synthesis of highly efficient catalytic materials with controllable electronic state will pro-vide an excellent opportunity to better understand the structure-function relationship.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation with an in situ hydrogen donor has received a great deal of attention from both academia and industry as an alternative to the traditional high-pressure-hydrogen process, owing to its better efficiency, atom economy, and sustainability features. Hydrogen stored in the chemical bonds of formic acid (FA), a promising hydrogen storage compound that could be derived from biomass or reduction of CO2, can be extracted selectively and used for diverse catalytic transformations. This Review summarizes and compares recent progress in catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) via heterogeneous hydrogen transfer from FA. Trans formations of biomass-derived platform chemicals (e.g., aromatic units, C5 and C6 sugars, furans, glycerol, fatty acids, levulinic acid (LA)), nitrogen-containing compounds (e.g., nitroarenes, quinolines), and organochlorinated compounds via transfer hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, and hydrodechlmination (HDC) are outlined. Synthesis strategies of the heterogeneous metal catalysts (e.g., metal and support type, metal-support interaction, single-atom, alloy effect, and confinement effect) and optimization of the reaction conditions (e.g., temperature, solvents, additives, and FA dosages) for enhancing the catalytic activity and regulating the product distribution are presented. Structure-activity relationships based on both dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of metal catalysts as well as the mechanistic interpretation of CTH with FA are also highlighted. Finally, current challenges and outlook for the future development of the field are discussed.

Abstract:2,5-Furandimethanol (FDM) is currently produced via a two-step process involving fructose dehydration over inorganic acids (H2SO4 and HCl) and the subsequent hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with H-2. Because of the separation difficulty and unstable feature of HMF, the direct transformation of hexose to FDM is still challenging yet crucial. In this work, we first reported that formic acid served as both a renewable Bronsted acid and a hydrogen donor for one-pot dehydration-hydrogenation of fructose over a heterogeneous Co catalyst. Under optimal conditions of 170 degrees C for 3 h, 60.2% FDM yield was achieved with full conversion of fructose. Kinetic studies showed that the apparent activation energy (E-a) of the one-pot dehydration-hydrogenation of fructose was 80.5 kJ/mol and indicated that the rate-determining step of the whole process is fructose dehydration. The Co-NC catalyst was reusable and was also capable of gram-scale one-pot dehydration-hydrogenation of fructose.

Abstract:From the perspective of reaction kinetics, the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) reaction of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was studied in this work. Its hydrogenation product, 2,5‐dimethylfuran (DMF), was a stable and water‐insoluble biofuel alternative to gasoline. In this study, CuCoOx catalysts were used and 2‐propanol (IPA) was the hydrogen donor. The results exhibited that the HMF conversion reached 100% with the complete formation of DMF at 170 °C. Experimental and characterization results revealed that the balance of metal sites and acid sites was critical, which could inhibit the side reactions and enhance the yield of the target product. By adopting the Langmuir‐Hinshelwood‐Hougen‐Watson (LHHW) kinetic model, it was found that direct hydrogen transfer from IPA to HMF predominated over indirect transfer via H2. Moreover, the results revealed that the hydrogenolysis of BHMF to MFA was the rate‐limiting step. The kinetic study in this work is expected to provide valuable insights into the industrial optimization of the CTH reaction of HMF and lay the foundation for the study of hydrogen transfer pathways in this process.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of the C=O group in biomass-derivate furfural (FF) over noble metal-free catalysts is challenging in aqueous. Herein, a CoOx/Nb2O5 nanostructure catalyst was synthesized for the hydrogenation of FF to furfuryl alcohol (FA). Under optimized conditions, a 95.7% yield of FA was obtained with a TOF of 155.7 h−1, and the kinetic study revealed that the reaction followed a pseudo-first-order pathway with an activation energy of 39.42 kJ mol−1. The catalyst characterization indicated the interaction between Nb2O5 and CoO via the Nb-O-Co bond in CoOx/Nb2O5-ctr, which prevented the further reduction of CoO to metal Co in the catalyst's preparation process. The catalytic mechanism suggested CoO was the dominant hydrogenation/adsorption active, whilst Co3O4 and Nb2O5 assisted the adsorption of FF. Further, DFT calculations verified CoO was the main adsorption site for FF adsorption in CoOx/Nb2O5-ctr. Moreover, CoOx/Nb2O5-ctr showed outstanding recyclability for the selective hydrogenation of FF to FA ever after five runs. This work provides opportunities for the clean conversion of biomass-based FF to FA and infers potential applications of Co for the large-scale hydrogenation of bio-based platform chemicals.

Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural over the Co-Based Catalyst: A Subtle Synergy with Ni and Zn Dopants

Abstract:A multimetal doping strategy has aroused extensive attention in promoting a non-noble catalyst for selective hydrogenation reaction. Herein, a multimetallic catalyst () with excellent catalytic performance for hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) is prepared through a facile, inexpensive, and efficient pyrolysis method. Using H2 as a H donor, extremely high selectivity (>99%) with 100% conversion is attained over the optimal catalyst. The subtle synergy between Co and Ni, Zn dopants, which remarkably promotes the performance of the Co-based catalyst, is revealed. In the system, Co0 is proven to be the main active site, whose content is greatly improved by Ni and Co dopants. Additionally, the Ni dopant could also benefit activation of H2 and the Zn dopant could enhance metal nanoparticle dispersion and the porous structure of the catalyst. In situ FTIR indicates that the vertical adsorption mode of FAL with the Oaldehyde terminal on ensures a selective hydrogenation process. With a N-doped carbon matrix, shows good cycling stability in five times run. is also competent in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of FOL, affording >99% yield with 2-propanol as a H donor. Interfacial Structure-Determined Reaction Pathway and Selectivity for 5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural Hydrogenation over Cu-Based Catalysts

Abstract:The catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived feedstocks to valuable chemicals generally requires catalysts with integrated active sites and tuned structures for selective activation of their multifunctional groups. Herein, we fabricated different Cu-based catalysts with multiple interfaces by facile reduction of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), aimed at controlling the reaction pathway and product selectivity in the hydrogenation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), an important biomass-based platform molecule. These Cu catalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman, TPR, HAADF-STEM, and in situ XAFS. For Cu/MgAlOx, derived from CuMg5Al2-LDHs, Cu particles were partially encapsulated by a MgAlOx support, thus forming highly intimate Cu-MgAlOx interfaces. On Co@Cu/CoAlOx, derived from CuCoxAl2-LDHs, together with a Cu-CoAlOx interface, partially reduced ultrasmall Co clusters were mounted around Cu particles to form a metallic Co-Cu interface, which is tunable by varying the Cu/Co ratio. As expected, Cu/MgAlO, was only active in C=O hydrogenation to produce 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (DHMF) in a 92.7% yield, while Co@Cu/3CoAlO(x) sequentially catalyzed the C=O hydrogenation and C-OH hydrogenolysis to yield as high as 98.5% 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), in sharp contrast to Co@Cu/5CoAlO(x), which further broke the C=C bonds of DMF to yield 83.6% 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF). The dependence of the reaction pathway and product selectivity on the composition and properties of the interface was revealed by identifying various intermediates using in situ IR. Specifically, HMF transformed into an O-bound intermediate on the Cu sites over the Cu-MgAlOx, while the unsaturated interfacial Cu-CoAlOx structure served as dual active sites to form a C,O-bound intermediate, thus leading to different products. In addition, the tunable Cu-Co interfacial sites remarkably influenced the adsorption modes of C=C bonds in the furan ring. This work provides a rationale for controlling the reaction pathway and product selectivity for complicated biomass reactions via the controllable construction of multiple interfaces.

Abstract:Al(OH)3/Co(OH)2 shows promise for 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) conversion to 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) through the synergistic effect of active and adsorption sites. Experimental results reveal that Al(OH)3 shows a strong absorption ability, contributing to the enrichment of HMF on the surface of the catalyst. Meanwhile, Co3+ as active sites further accelerated the catalytic kinetics. Electrocatalytic conversion of biomass‐derived 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to value‐added 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is of great significance in compensating for the rapid consumption of fossil resources. However, it is a challenge to further improve the performance of HMF electrocatalytic oxidation (HMFOR) by synergistic kinetics (active sites) and thermodynamics (adsorption sites). In this work, Al(OH)3/Co(OH)2 is successfully fabricated as an efficient catalyst, and its catalytic mechanism for HMF oxidation is clarified. Extended X‐ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis demonstrate that electrochemically generated Co3+ is the main catalytic site for HMF oxidation. The HMF equilibrium adsorption capacity of Al(OH)3 reach 57.0 mg g−1, which effectively increase the initial concentration of substrate and promoted the reaction rate. The combined results, based on 24 stable cycles and an FDCA yield retention rate of 98.6% after 180 days, are the highest ever achieved. Additionally, it is shown that this system can oxidize four other biomass‐derived substrates. Therefore, this work provides insight into a hydroxide catalyst that owes its efficiency to synergy between active and adsorption sites.

Oriented Conversion of HMF to FDCA under Mild Conditions over Lignin-Tailored Co Single-Atom Catalyst with Enhanced Co Loadings

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysis over single-atom catalysts (SACs) has garnered significant attention in biomass-derived platform chemical conversion owing to the high atomic utilization and reliable selectivity/stability. Herein, Co single-atom catalysts (Co-N/F1) derived from fractionated lignin were employed for the oriented oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a typical platform chemical derived from glucose, into 2,5-furandicarboxylicacid (FDCA) under mild conditions. The Co-N/F1 with enhanced Co content was obtained using the low-molecular-weight lignin fraction (F1) with high functional group contents (e.g., Ph-OH and COOH), and the as-prepared catalyst was demonstrated to present a Co-N-4 configuration. Owing to the absence of colored byproduct formation from HMF at elevated temperatures, Co-N/F1 realized the highly selective conversion of HMF to FDCA (100% HMF conversion, 99.20% FDCA yield) under mild conditions (65 degrees C, 3 bar O-2), which outperformed most reported non-noble metal-supported catalysts. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Co-N-4 site in Co-N/F1 facilitates the dehydrogenation of the alpha-C position on HMF and its aldehyde intermediates, resulting in a significantly enhanced catalytic efficiency. Furthermore, Co-N/F1 exhibited stable reusability due to the alkaline resistance of the Co-N-4 structure. Our study details the insights into the synthesis of Co-SACs using a lignin fractionation strategy and further demonstrates its good feasibility for the oriented conversion of biomass-derived platform chemicals under mild conditions.

Abstract:The transfer hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) via the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction reaction is a promising and appealing strategy for the valorization of biomass, in which designing high-efficiency and high-selectivity Lewis acid-base catalysts is the central task. Recently, zirconium-organic acid coordination catalysts have been broadly constructed, however, most of them contained a certain amount of Brønsted acid sites (BASs) in addition to Lewis acid-base sites (LABSs), which inevitably influenced the yield and selectivity of FFA. In this work, a zirconium-melamine coordination catalyst (Zr-MM) was synthesized by a convenient self-assembly process, in which melamine (MM) was used as a cheap organic ligand. Systematic experimental results indicated that Zr-MM possessed strong LABSs, and at the same time, lacked BASs, which could not only catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of FF and facilitate the formation of FFA, but also avoid the further transformation of FFA and improve the selectivity of FFA. Hence, it showed remarkable catalytic activity, leading to 100% FF conversion and 99.4% FFA yield in isopropanol at 150 °C for 4 h. More significantly, Zr-MM also displayed excellent catalytic stability and catalytic universality, and it could not only be reused for five reaction cycles without an apparent decrease in catalytic activity, but also be employed for the effective transfer hydrogenation of 5-methylfurfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, phenylaldehyde, cyclohexanone, methyl levulinate and ethyl levulinate. All in all, this work provided some crucial references to prepare the BASs-free zirconium-based coordination catalysts for the upgradation of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural to furfuryl alcohol with formic acid as hydrogen donor over CuCs-MCM catalyst

Abstract:Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) has received great interest in recent years. Herein, Cu-Cs bimetallic supported catalyst, CuCs(2)-MCM, was developed for the CTH of FF to FFA using formic as hydrogen donor. CuCs(2)-MCM achieved a 99.6 % FFA yield at an optimized reaction conditions of 170 °C, 1 h. Cu species in CuCs(2)-MCM had dual functions in catalytically decomposing formic acid to generate hydrogen and hydrogenating FF to FFA. The doping of Cs made the size of Cu particles smaller and improved the dispersion of the Cu active sites. Importantly, the Cs species played a favorable role in enhancing the hydrogenation activity as a promoter by adjusting the surface acidity of Cu species to an appropriate level. Correlation analysis showed that surface acidity is the primary factor to affect the catalytic activity of CuCs(2)-MCM.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) serves as a significant biomass platform molecule, and its selective conversion to produce furan-based chemicals is of great significance for biomass refining. Herein, a zinc-modified cobalt catalyst supported by nitrogen-carbon material (Zn 1 Co 3 /N-C) was prepared and showed an adjustable performance in the selective hydrogenation or hydrogenolysis of HMF to produce two important furan-based chemicals, 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) or 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF). The catalyst's outstanding performance can be attributed to its ability to utilize a synergistic mechanism involving metal-acid interactions. This mechanism is achieved by introducing a second metal element (Zn), which in turn modifies the electronic structure of the initial metal surface and adjusts the acid content. By regulating the reaction temperature, the selectivity of 93.7% for BHMF or 93.5% for DMF were achieved with almost complete conversion of HMF. The results of catalyst characterization reveal that the Co metal sites and the ZnO acid sites play a key role in the hydrogenation of CO bonds and the hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds. This study unveiled the mechanism underlying the impact of both the acid quantity and the electronic structure of the metal surface on catalytic performance through the utilization of the zinc-modified catalyst's activity.

Abstract:5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a widely used biomass platform chemical that plays a crucial role in bridging biomass and fossil resources. Electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF provides an efficient way to obtain high‐value‐added biomass‐derived chemicals, among which the intermediate product 5‐formyl‐2‐furan carboxylic acid (FFCA) has attracted considerable attention. However, the weak adsorption ability of monometallic nickel oxide (NiOx) to HMF in neutral electrolyte restricts its further development, resulting in low HMF conversion and FFCA yield. In this study, we successfully constructed a novel nickel oxide‐platinum oxide hybrid catalyst supported on carbon felt (NiOx‐PtOx/CF), which exhibits an optimized adsorption ability of HMF, leading to the outstanding FFCA yield up to 77% in the neutral media. The high activity of the NiOx‐PtOx/CF catalyst can be attributed to the redistribution of the electrons and the optimization of the electronic structure on the Ni active site due to the introduction of PtOx on NiOx nanosheets. This study offers valuable insights for the design of efficient multicomponent electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic biomass refinery systems.

Aerobic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to Dimethyl Furan-2,5- Dicarboxylate over CoMn@NC Catalysts Using Atmospheric Oxygen

Abstract:Dimethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate (DMFDCA) is a valuable biomass-derived chemical that is an ideal alternative to fossil-derived terephthalic acid as a monomer for polymers. The one-step oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to DMFDCA is of practical significance. It not only shortens the reaction pathway but also avoids the separation process of intermediates; thus, reducing cost. In this work, non-noble bimetallic catalysts supported on N-doped porous carbon (CoMn@NC) were synthesized via a one-step co-pyrolysis procedure using different pyrolysis temperatures and proportions of metal precursors and additives. We employed the prepared CoMn@NC catalysts in the aerobic oxidation of HMF under mild reaction conditions to obtain DMFDCA. High-yield DMFDCA was obtained by screening the prepared catalysts and optimizing the reaction conditions, including the strength and amount of the base, as well as the reaction temperature. The optimized yield of DMFDCA was 85% over the Co3Mn2@NC-800 catalyst after 12 h at 50 degrees C using ambient-pressure oxygen. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were determined using a variety of characterization techniques, the factors affecting the performance of each catalyst were investigated, and the relationship between the physicochemical properties and performance of the prepared catalysts was elucidated. A porous structure with a high surface area had a positive effect on mass transfer efficiency. Cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) and atomically dispersed Mn were coordinated to N-doped carbon to form M-N-x (where M = Co or Mn). Based on the Mott-Schottky effect, there was significant electron transfer between each metal and the N-doped carbon, additionally, the metal NPs supplied electrons to the carbon atoms. The electron-deficient metal site in the pyridinic N-rich carbon was beneficial for the activation of HMF and oxygen. The activation of oxygen produced reactive oxygen species (such as superoxide radical anions) to ensure high selectivity to DMFDCAthrough dehydrogenative oxidation of the hemiacetal intermediate and hydroxymethyl group of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-furoate. The existence of disordered and defective carbons increased the number of active sites. Subsequently, we performed a series of control experiments. Based on our current experimental results and previous studies, we propose a simple mechanism for the aerobic oxidation of HMF to DMFDCA. The catalyst was stable, its performance decreased slightly after two cycles, and it was tolerant to SCN - ions and resistant against N or S poisoning. Furthermore, the use of this catalytic system can be expanded to various substituted aromatic alcohols, such as benzyl alcohols with different substituents, furfuryl alcohol, and heterocyclic alcohols. Simultaneously, the product type was further extended from methyl esters to ethyl esters with a high yield when the substrate reacted with ethanol. In conclusion, this catalytic system can be applied in the production of carboxylic esters for polymers.

Abstract:For tandem reactions with several intermediate products, improving the reaction rate of each step is vital for accelerating the entire reaction. However, simultaneously enhancing the conversions of different intermediates using a single-active-site catalyst remains a challenge because the catalyst commonly promotes only one type of reaction. Herein, a Co-based double-active-site relay catalyst (denoted as (Co1→Cop)/N-CNTs) is reported. Due to the preferable catalytic activities of Co single atoms (Co1) and Co nanoparticles (Cop) for the oxidation of hydroxyls to aldehyde groups and aldehydes to carboxyl groups, respectively, the prepared (Co1→Cop)/N-CNTs exhibited good catalytic performance for the aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The catalyst achieved 100% HMF conversion efficiency and 96% FDCA yield under a 0.1 MPa O2 atmosphere at 100 °C for 8 h. The presented strategy offers prospects for the development of highly active catalysts for complex tandem reactions.
