Abstract:Meldrum’s acid (MA) is utilized as a monomer to polymerize with diisocyanates to result in polyamides, containing MA moieties at polymer chains. This reaction is also employed to prepare isocyanate-terminated polyamide segments which are utilized as a precursor for preparation of MA-containing polyurethanes. Based on the thermolysis reaction of MA groups, followed by ketene dimerization reaction, the reactive polyamides and polyurethanes show self-cross-linkable features. The cross-linked polyurethanes exhibit good film formability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. A new MA-based polymerization method and a novel synthesis route for preparation of reactive polyamides and polyurethanes are demonstrated.

Abstract:In this work, a cocatalytic effect between Meldrum's acid (MA) and benzoxazine (Bz) compounds has been explored to build up a self-promoting curing system. Consequently, the MA/Bz reactive blend exhibits a relatively low reaction temperature compared to the required temperatures for the cross-linking reactions of the pure MA and Bz components. This feature is attractive for energy-saving processing issues. Moreover, the thermosetting resins based on the MA/Bz reactive blends have been prepared. The MA component can generate additional free volume in the resulting resins, so as to trap air in the resin matrix and consequently to bring low dielectric constants to the resins. The MA-containing agent is an effective modifier for benzoxazine resins to reduce their dielectric constants.

Abstract:Hydrolase-catalyzed Michael addition of imidazole derivatives to acrylic monomers in organic medium was described. A serial of N-substituted imidazole derivatives were successfully synthesized in moderate yields by the catalysis of hydrolases in organic medium. Nine commercially available hydrolases from different sources were screened and all of them were found to be able to catalyze this type of addition reaction. The reaction yields depended on the solvent properties and the solvents with higher logP value supported this enzyme-catalyzed reaction to give higher conversion. Influence of the structure of the Michael acceptor and donor on the enzymatic Michael addition was also investigated. The acceptor with shorter alcohol chain afforded a higher yield. A more rapid conversion was observed when the donor had an electron-withdrawing group. This hydrolase-catalyzed Michael addition reaction has widened the applicability of biocatalysts in organic and bioorganic synthesis.

Abstract:With the aim to get a clear understanding of this category of polymerizations, the Michael addition polymerizations of trifunctional amines, i.e. 4-aminomethyl piperidine (AMPD), N-methyl ethylenediamine (MEDA), and 1-(2-aminoethyl) piperazine (AEPZ), with an equimolar diacrylamide, N,N′-methylene diacrylamide (MDA), were investigated. Similar to the polymerizations of these amines with an equimolar diacrylate, novel linear poly(amido amine)s containing secondary and tertiary amines in the backbones are obtained from these polymerizations as reflected by 13C NMR (INVGATE). In situ monitoring the polymerization processes using NMR shows that the reactivity sequence of three types amines in the trifunctional amines is 2° amine (original)>1° amine≫2° amine (formed), and the 2° amine (formed) is kept out of the reaction. But these results are different from those reported for the polymerizations of the similar amines with an equimolar divinyl sulfone and some diacrylates. The molecular weights and properties of poly(amindo amine)s obtained were characterized by GPC, DSC and TGA, respectively.

Abstract:The acid-catalyzed intramolecular oxa-Michael addition of (E)-1-aryl-4-hydroxy-4-methyl-pent-1-en-3-ones under solvent-free and microwave irradiation conditions has been investigated. The results showed that Bronsted acids are more efficient than Lewis acids in this reaction. Up to 90% conversion and 81% yield were obtained using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (triflic acid) as the catalyst, with short reaction times and an environmentally benign procedure.

Abstract:The reaction was studied of living 1-naphthyltriphenylphosphonium poly(methyl methacrylate) ylides (NTPP,PMMA) with methyl iodide and benzyl bromide in tetrahydrofuran at ambient temperatures. NMR characterization shows clean end-functionalizations. The coupling with equimolar bis-1,4-(bromomethyl)benzene was also carried out and was found to be quantitative. The reactions appear to proceed through a rapid and reversible ionization into a highly reactive NTPP,PMMA enolate. The kinetics of methylation and benzylation in the presence of a large excess of electrophile is given by a pseudo-first-order process. The kinetics of these reactions is compared with that of protonation by water and anhydrous acetic acid. The reaction of the latter system is extremely rapid compared to that with water and the alkylating reagents. This indicates that the rate-determining step in the electrophilic reactions is determined by both the ionization and the ion pair collapse to the ylide.

Abstract:Through variable-temperature H-1 and C-13 NMR experiments and density functional calculations, the kinetics and mechanism of Michael type addition were investigated using alkynyl carbene A as the substrate. The two conformers of substrate A were distinguished from the H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra, and the calculated results showed that the syn-conformer is more stable than the anti- by 6.5 kJ mol(-1) with the activation barrier between these two conformers as 62.5 kJ mol(-1). The full reaction mechanism of Michael type addition was first presented to us, which differs from the previous solely based on the kinetic studies. It contains three elementary steps (see the scheme): (1) Formation of C-8-N-2 bond via transition state TS1. (2) Conformation conversion from In-1 to In-2, which is very important but ignored before. (3) Intramolecular proton transfer via transition state TS2 forming the product. The first step is rate determining with an activation barrier of 73.0 kJ mol(-1), very close to the experimental value of 89.6 kJ mol(-1). The product P is dominant over P' in population contrary to the situation of tautomer B' over B, which is caused by larger activation barriers to P' and the less stabilities of structures related to B' from the first transition state to the product.[GRAPHICS](c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The study presents a novel approach utilizing iminium salt activation and mild enolization of thioesters, offering an efficient and rapid synthesis of Michael adducts with promising stereoselectivity and marking a significant advancement in mechanocatalysis. The stereoselective addition of bisthiomalonates 1-4 to cyclic enones and 4-chlorobenzylideneacetone proceeds stereoselectively under iminium activation conditions secured by chiral primary amines, in contrast to oxo-esters as observed in dibenzyl malonate addition. Mild enolization of thioesters allows for the generation of Michael adducts with good yields and stereoselectivities. Reactions in a ball mill afford product formation with similar efficacy to solution-phase reactions but with slightly reduced enantioselectivity, yet they yield products in just one hour compared to 24 or even 168 hours in solution-based reactions. It is noteworthy that this represents one of the early reports on the application of iminium catalysis using first-generation chiral amines under mechanochemical conditions, along with the utilization of easily enolizable thioesters as nucleophiles in this transformation.

Abstract:Thermosetting resins based on Meldrum's acid (MA) derivatives as monomers show high thermal stability and inherent low-dielectric constants. In this work, a multifunctional MA derivative (MA-bisF) possessing two MA and two furan groups is newly prepared. Characterization of MA-bisF has been carried out with Fourier transform infrared, H-1 NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Self-crosslinking MA-bisF results in the corresponding thermosetting resin mediating the addition reaction between ketene/ketene and ketene/furan groups. MA-bisF is also utilized as a modifier for bismaleimide (BMI) resins through polymerizing MA-bisF and BMI through Diels-Alder reaction. The corresponding crosslinked MA-bisF/BMI resin possesses a high content of fused-ring structure and a high crosslinking density, so as to exhibit high thermal stability (392 degrees C), high glass transition temperature (262 degrees C), high char yield (48 wt%), and a low-dielectric constant of 2.78 at 1 MHz. A new type of reactive polymers and the corresponding high-performance crosslinked resins has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Sequential Knoevenagel condensation/cyclization using cyclic active methylene compounds such as Meldrum's acid have been studied. The reaction of 2-(1-phenylvinyl)benzaldehyde and Meldrum's acid, dimedone, or 1,3-indandione with piperidine/AcOH or L-proline at room temperature for 17–18 h gave cyclized indene derivatives in 63–80% yield. The reaction of 2-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)benzaldehyde and Meldrum's acid at room temperature for 17 h gave a fluorene derivative in 98% yield. Furthermore, the reaction of 2-(3,5-dimethoxybenzyl)benzaldehyde and Meldrum's acid with piperidine at room temperature for 18 h gave a dihydroanthracene derivative bearing Meldrum's acid in 83% yield. The reaction of 2-(3,5-dimethoxybenzyl)benzaldehyde and Meldrum's acid with piperidine at 110 °C for 2 h gave Meldrum's acid fragmentated dihydroanthracene derivative in 48% yield. The reaction mechanisms of the cyclization steps and Meldrum's acid fragmentation have been examined by the DFT calculations.

Abstract:Recently the hydrogen-bond activated reactions have attracted much attention.1 Takemoto2 reported a highly enantioselective Michael addition of manolate to nitroolefins catalyzed by a bifunctional organocatalyst with tertiary amine and thiourea moiety. As we known,stereoselective conjugate additions of thiols are interesting due to the standpoint of biological and synthetic importance, however, only very limited good results have been obtained except for the works of Shibasaki3, Kanemasa4 and Deng5 et al.In this letter, we report an efficient catalytic asymmetric Michael reactions of thiols to a,a-unsaturated carbonyl compounds promoted by bifunctional organocatalysts. A series of organocatalysts with chiral amine and thiourea structures were designed and synthesized and have been successfully applied in the conjugated additions of thiols to a,a-unsaturated imides and enones.The reactions got quantitative yields and the ee values were up to 84%. It is noteworthy that the a-asymmetric protonation (up to 43% ee) also could be achieved.The Michael addition between aromatic thiols and a,a-unsaturated carbonyl compounds isdescribed as follows:Works to further increase the enantioselectivity is under investigation in our laboratory.
