Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:novel solid acid was prepared from boric, phosphorous and sulfuric acid by a simple method, and characterized by FT-IR, XRD and TG. Surprisingly, the prepared solid acid is an effective catalyst for the synthesis of bisphenol A from condensation of phenol with acetone. The high conversion of acetone (91.8%) and selectivity of bisphenol A (93.4%) were achieved in the presence of the novel catalyst.

Abstract:A temperature-controlled highly selective dimerization of α-methylstyrene to produce 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene and 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindan was catalyzed by Brönsted acidic ionic liquid [Hmim]+BF4−. At 60°C, 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene was formed in 93% selectivity with >92% conversion under a solvent-free condition while 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindan could be obtained in 100% selectivity when the reaction temperature was increased to 170°C. The ionic liquid [Hmim]+BF4− could be reused with almost no loss of activity.

Abstract:: A method for the selective dimerization of styrenes and acrylates has been developed. The reaction is catalyzed by a very low amount of palladium acetate in molten tetrabutylammonium acetate without the need for any additional ligand. The use of this method enabled the coupling of substituted vinyl arenes in reasonable yields to give exclusively the (E,E)‐1,4‐diarylbutadiene motif within 7‐10 h. Acrylates, on the other hand, exhibit higher reactivity, and the use of dibutyl acrylate resulted in the quantitative synthesis of dibutyl 2‐methyleneglutarate in less than 2 h. This selectivity is unprecedented in the literature. The role of the ionic liquid and the different catalytic pathways involved in the two processes were also elucidated.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous strong acid catalyst has been synthesized through the copolymerization of p -toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde with sulfuric acid as catalyst. The novel catalyst owns the strong acidity as much as 4.0 mmol/g, while Nafion and Amberlyst-15 only has the acidity of about 0.8 mmol/g. Furthermore, the catalyst possesses the advantages of the high thermal stability (200 °C) and low cost for the simple synthetic procedure. The catalytic activities of the novel catalyst were taken through esterification of acetic acid and ethanol and acetalization of benzolaldehyde and 1,2-ethandiol. The results showed that the novel catalyst showed much higher activities than the Amberlyst-15 and owned even the comparative activity to sulfuric acid, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the replacement of the traditional homogeneous catalyst for the green process.

Abstract:Synthesis of diphenylmethane (DPM) from benzene and benzyl chloride with acidic ionic liquids, such as (C2H5)(3)NHCl-AlCl3, (C2H5)(3)NHCl-ZnCl2, (C2H5)(3)NHCl-FeCl3, and (C2H5)(3)NHCl-CuCl2, as catalysts was investigated. The results showed that (C2H5)(3)NHCl-AlCl3 is a highly efficient catalyst. Both the yield and the selectivity of DPM reached up to 100% in the presence of (C2H5)(3)NHCI-AlCl3 as catalyst, when the reaction was carried out at ambient conditions.

Abstract:The catalytic activities of nine neutral nickel and palladium a-acetylide complexes [M=(C=CR)2(PR’3)2)M=Ni,Pd; R=Ph,CH2OH,CH2OOCH3,CH2OOCPh,CH2OOCPhOH-o; R’=Ph,Bu] are compared.Among them,Ni(Cs=CPh)2-(PBuj)2 shows the highest catalytic activity and gives the polystyrene with high molecular weight(Mw=188800)and a syndio-rich microstructure.The catalytic behavior of transition metal acetylides is related to metal,phosphine,and alkynyl ligands bonded to the metal atoms.

Abstract:The acetalization reactions of isobutyraldehyde with 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) for the synthesis of 2,4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane were carried out under mild reaction conditions using four water-stable Brønsted-acidic task-specific ionic liquids ([HMIM]BF4, —SO3H functionalized acidic ionic liquid, —COOH functionalized acidic ionic liquid, [NMP][HSO4]) as environmentally benign catalysts for the first time. The process is highly effective and very selective. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid with the two acid sites (IL-3) exhibited the most excellent catalytic performance under mild reaction conditions. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid could be conveniently separated from the product and easily recycled in subsequent runs.

Abstract:A new series of single‐component air‐stable transition metal acetylide catalysts with the structures ML2(C≡CR)2 (M = Ni and Pd, L = PPh3 and PBu3, R = p‐C6H4C≡CH, C6H5, H, CH2OH, CH2OCOCH3, CH2OCOC6H5 and CH2OCOC6H4OH‐o) for polymerization of polar alkynes were developed. Transition metals, phosphine and alkynyl ligands and solvents exhibited significant influence on the polymerization. Propargyl alcohol could be polymerized with these catalysts under mild conditions to give soluble rich‐trans polymers with weight average molecular weights as high as 5.7 × 104 in yields as high as 79%.
DMAO-activated Rare-earth Metal Catalysts for Styrene and Its Derivative Polymerization

Abstract:The catalytic performance of rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes in combination with DMAO (dry methylaluminoxane) is explored. In the presence of 60 equivalents of DMAO, the half-sandwich complex (C13H8CH2Ph)Sc(CH2SiMe3)2(THF) (1) is inert for styrene polymerization, but (C5Me4Ph)Sc(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 (2) converts 18% styrene into syndiotactic polystyrene. Under the same conditions, the constrained-geometry configuration sandium complex (C13H8CH2Py)Sc(CH2SiMe3)2 (3a) displays extremely high catalytic activity (>6420 kg·molSc−1·h−1) and perfect syndiospecific (rrrr>99%) for styrene polymerization, while its lutetium (3b) and yttrium (3c) analogues are nearly inactive. Although the binary catalytic system 3a/DMAO exhibits very low activity for 4-methoxystyrene polymerization, it is an efficient catalyst for the syndioselective polymerization of other styrene derivatives such as 2-methoxystyrene, 4-methylthiostyrene, 4-fluorostyrene, 4-dimethylhydrosilylstyrene, alkynesusbstituted styrenes and 4-methylstyrene. In addition, the binary system 3a/DMAO can copolymerize ethylene and styrene to give alternating copolymers with a single glass transition at 80 °C and 0.4 MPa ethylene pressures. By increasing styrene feed amount from 20 mmol to 60 mmol, the styrene content slight increases from 48.2 mol% to 53.8 mol%, but the polymerization activity is obviously promoted from 240 kg·molSc−1·h−1 to 532 kg·molSc−1·h−1.

Abstract:NiCl2(dppp) [dppp=1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane] shows high catalytic activity for the head-to-tail dimerization of styrene and its derivatives bearing electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups. The dimerization proceeds with high regio- and stereoselectivity to afford trans-1,3-diaryl-1-butenes in high yields.

Abstract:A combination of CsF and hexamethyldisilane in DMSO enabling an anti-Markovnikov formal hydrotrimethylsilylation of styrenes is reported. Mechanistic investigations detail the reaction pathways, including in situ generation of a silyl anion, the addition of this silyl anion onto the alkene to form a carbanion, and this carbanion is then protonated by DMSO. The choice of the solvent to match its reactivity with the carbanion and silyl anion is key to the success of this reaction.

Abstract:A series of trans- or cis-stilbenes have been synthesized in good to excellent yields via a functional group-dependent decarboxylation process from the corresponding 2,3-diaryl acrylic acids in a neutral CuI/1,10-phen/PEG-400 system under microwave conditions. The in situ generation of the recyclable catalytic complex, the use of environmentally benign solvent PEG-400, the operational simplicity, the short reaction times, as well as the functional group-dependent chemo- and stereo-selectivity have made the decarboxylation process a highly efficient and applicable protocol.

Abstract:The significance of selective catalysis in producing plastic monomers is crucial to meet sustainability and economic requirements. It is essential to develop a selective solid acid catalyst to replace irrecoverable corrosive mineral acids and thermolabile sulfonated resins for the production of p,p′−bisphenol A (BPA) isomer, a key intermediate in polycarbonate production. However, limited success has been achieved due to low activity and selectivity towards the desired p,p′−BPA isomer. Herein, a mild and selective route is presented for producing p,p′−BPA using SBA-15 functionalized sulfonic acid catalysts. Sulfonic acid-based catalysts with and without alkyl chain linkers, supported on SBA−15, were synthesized to evaluate the effect of acidity, and textual properties on the catalytic efficiency, and product selectivity. Among all the synthesized catalysts, SBA−15−Pr−SO 3 H exhibited the highest product selectivity. The addition of mercaptopropionic acid (as a promoter) enhanced the catalytic efficiency and afforded ~99% acetone conversion, with 97.3% p,p′−BPA selectivity. A detailed mechanism with and without the promoter is proposed. The study also highlights the potential of mesoporous SBA−15−supported sulfonic acid catalysts as a selective and efficient catalyst for synthesizing bisphenol derivatives from the lignocellulose biomass−derived platform molecules, addressing challenges posed by fossil resources.

Abstract:A novel polymer solid acid-base catalyst Cat-AAA (Al + aminoacetic acid) with aluminum and nitrogen was prepared from aminoacetic acid and Al by using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 as a template via evaporation induced organic–organic assembly method. Cat-AAA was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The acid-base properties of the catalysts were determined by temperature programmed desorption using CO2 and NH3 as probe molecules. The dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether over Cat-AAA had been studied; the results showed that the conversion of methanol and selectivity of dimethyl ether is higher at a high reaction temperature. The key requirements for a good catalyst for dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether are: (i) weak acid-sites activate O in a methanol molecule; (ii) at the same time, weak base-sites activate H of hydroxy group in another methanol molecule.

Abstract:In the synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE n ) from formaldehyde (FA) and methanol (MeOH) solution, the methanol conversion and PODE n selectivity are unsatisfactory because the presence of water limits the adsorption of reactants on acid sites and leads to the hydrolysis of some products. Herein, polystyrene-based hybrid solid acids with tunable hydrophobicity and high acid density were synthesized by post-synthesis grafting method in this work. The prepared catalysts were investigated by BET, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and acid-base titration. The results demonstrated that the surface property of the catalyst could be changed from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity with the increase of organic group chain length, which effectively improved methanol conversion and PODE 3-6 selectivity. The correlation between contact angles and turnover frequency (TOF) was investigated, suggesting that the TOF of polystyrene-based hybrid solid acids treated with octadecyl trichlorosilane was 2.0 times higher than that of untreated ones. Moreover, a supposed reaction pathway for the synthesis of PODE n from formaldehyde and methanol was proposed, indicating that the improvement of hydrophobicity promoted the decrease of local water concentration in the catalyst, thus facilitating the stabilization of carbocations.

Abstract:Asymmetric alkylphosphanyl carbon-bridged diphosphine Ph2PC = CPR1(R2)-type L1-L5 ligand has been observed to have a distinct effect on the catalytic performance of the corresponding Cr(III) based catalysts in ethylene oligomerization. Precatalyst 1, bearing diethylphosphanyl moiety, exhibited a high catalytic activity of 3628 kg·g−1·h−1 accompanied by 65.5% high C8 selectivity. Precatalyst 2 having diisopropylphosphanyl group afforded remarkably high catalytic activity of 4833 kg·g−1·h−1 with 91.8% combined (C6 + C8) product selectivity. Precatalysts 1–2 also showed good thermal stability and offer high catalytic activity at the high reaction temperature. Precatalyst 3 with sterically encumbered dicyclohexylphosphanyl substituent mainly offers C6 selectivity at the expense of the C8 fraction. Precatalyst 5 having isopropylphosphanyl moiety afforded poor catalytic activity and high C6 selectivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of precatalyst 2 showed that the rate-determining step in the trimerization pathway of the catalyst may face a low energy barrier and therefore produce more C6 fraction.
