Abstract:The selective oxidation of methacrolein (MAL) to high value-added methacrylic acid (MAA) using green chemical technology is of high research value. However, the process remains challenging owing to the few redox active sites and weak acid sites on the surface of the heteropolyacid catalyst, as well as the high C = O bond dissociation energy of MAL. In this study, an organic amine-modified heteropolyacid, dendritic polyamide-amine-CsH3PMo11VO40 (PAMAM-CsPAV), was synthesized by a facile co-precipitation method, which was applied as an efficient catalyst for the MAL-MAA oxidation system. Preliminary phosphomolybdovanadic acid (HPAV) anchored with PAMAM through proton bonding and hydrogen bonding network to generate mixed amino (protonated and free amino groups) modified dendritic HPAV (dendri-PAV) precursors. The PAMAM-CsPAV formed by calcination benefited from the positive "dendritic effect" of PAMAM, which induced the assembly of the compacted CsPAV precursor into uniformly dispersed nano-microspheres. In particular, the PAMAM-CsPAV, which was coordinated by mixed amino groups and strong hydrogen bond networks, promoted proton hydrogen-driven aldehyde double bond cleavage through achieving weak acid center elimination for the first time. Furthermore, more redox active sites (VO2+) were formed and migrated to the secondary structure to accelerate electron-driven O2 reduction and lattice oxygen-driven carboxylic acid group generation. Therefore, the selectivity to MAA (97%) of PAMAM-CsPAV was significantly higher than that of CsPAV (74%) at the same MAL conversion (60%). In addition, PAMAM-CsPAV also exhibited stable catalytic activity in the long-term evaluation test.

Abstract:The oxidation of methacrolein (MAL) to methacrylic acid (MAA) catalyzed by Keggin-type phosphomolybdo-vanadic acid catalyst belongs to the acid-catalyzed and oxygen-catalyzed co-promoted reactions. It is a challenge to design catalysts with suitable acidity and redox properties. In this paper, a strategy using organic ammonia to modify CsH3PMo11VO40 (CsPAV) was proposed. Core-shell polymerization precursors were synthesized by using polydopamine (PDA) microspheres as modifiers and templates, and regularly arranged PDA-CsPAV bowl-shaped catalysts were obtained via one-step calcination. The morphology, structure, thermal stability, acidity and redox properties of PDA-CsPAV catalysts were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTA, XPS, SEM, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD, and the catalytic performance was evaluated by oxidation of MAL to MAA. The rich functional groups on the surface of PDA microspheres combine with H4PMo11VO40 (HPAV) through strong coordination bonds to form a catalyst film. The uniform spherical structure of PDA can adjust the dispersion and morphology of CsPAV. NH4+ was formed and rearranged with heteropoly anions during calcination, which positively regulated the acidity and redox property of the catalyst. The addition of PDA accelerated electron transfer and strengthened the self-reduction process of HPAV. Compared with CsPAV, PDA-CsPAV has more acid sites and oxidation catalytic active centers (VO2+), thus exhibiting better MAL oxidation performance and good thermal stability.

Abstract:Methacrolein (MAL) is an important intermediate extensively used in the manufacture of methyl methacrylate and other materials (polymers and resins). In this study, a series of secondary amines/acids were explored as catalysts for the condensation of formaldehyde and propionaldehyde to prepare MAL. It was found that the structure of the amines and acids directly affected the yield of MAL. The effect of the catalyst was closely related to the nucleophilicity of the amines as well as the steric hindrance effect, while acids also played a role as co-catalysts. Dibutylamine acetate was selected as the catalyst after investigation. The catalytic performance of the system was systematically studied by a series of single-factor experiments, including stirring rate, temperature, reaction time, acid/amine ratio, and the solvent, and the optimized reaction conditions were obtained. In the optimum condition, the yield of MAL was up to 97.3%. Kinetic experiments were performed for the condensation of formaldehyde and propionaldehyde to MAL, and the activation energies, reaction orders, and rate-limiting step of the reaction were determined. The results indicate that the decomposition of the Mannich base is a rate-limiting step.

Abstract:The Michael addition and alkylation reaction of active methylene compounds (AMCs) with two active hydrogens had been investigated extensively in organic chemistry, while the polymerization of AMCs had few studies. Herein, we reported active methylene-based polyaddition and polyalkylation catalyzed via an organic superbase under ambient conditions. A model polymerization was first conducted between ethylene glycol diacrylate (EGDA) and methyl cyanoacetate (MCA). The molecular weight (M w) of the model polymer was up to 50 500 g mol-1 with a high yield (99%). Eight AMCs were selected and a high-throughput parallel synthesizing instrument (HTPSI) was used to synthesize semi-library polymers of AMCs and EGDA via a Michael type polyaddition. The obtained AMC-based polymers had low cell cytotoxicity. Elastomers with cyanogen groups could be prepared using trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) as a crosslinker. Furthermore, three dihalogen compounds were explored to polymerize with MCA and malononitrile via alkylation reactions. The pendent cyanogen or ester groups of the polymers could be reduced by lithium aluminum hydride. Novel polymer families were constructed based on the polyaddition and polyalkylation of AMCs.

Abstract:A novel polymer solid acid-base catalyst Cat-AAA (Al + aminoacetic acid) with aluminum and nitrogen was prepared from aminoacetic acid and Al by using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 as a template via evaporation induced organic–organic assembly method. Cat-AAA was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The acid-base properties of the catalysts were determined by temperature programmed desorption using CO2 and NH3 as probe molecules. The dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether over Cat-AAA had been studied; the results showed that the conversion of methanol and selectivity of dimethyl ether is higher at a high reaction temperature. The key requirements for a good catalyst for dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether are: (i) weak acid-sites activate O in a methanol molecule; (ii) at the same time, weak base-sites activate H of hydroxy group in another methanol molecule.

Abstract:In view of the drawbacks of small specific surface area, poor thermal stability, and easy decomposition, CsPAV was modified by the organic ammonium source dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC). A series of (DMDAAC)CsPAV/SiO2 catalysts with different (DMDAAC)CsPAV loadings were prepared by an impregnation method. When DMDAAC-modified CsPAV was supported on SiO2, it exhibited a high specific surface area and more active sites. The catalytic performance of (DMDAAC)CsPAV/SiO2 was investigated by methacrolein (MAL) oxidation to methacrylic acid (MAA). The performance of the catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TG, NH3-TPD, NMR, and XPS. There was an interaction between SiO2 and (DMDAAC)CsPAV, and the NH4+ crystalline salt was formed in the process of calcination from DMDAAC. The interaction between the formed NH4+ and SiO2 carrier prevented the decomposition of CsPAV. (DMDAAC)CsPAV/SiO2 showed high stability, and the catalytic performance was stable in the long-term evaluation test. Under the optimum conditions, the conversion of MAL was 80.8%, and the selectivity to MAA was 89.1% for 50(DMDAAC)CsPAV/SiO2.

Abstract:The application of heteropoly acid catalyst in methacrolein (MAL) oxidation reaction is limited for its poor thermal stability and few active centers. Here, the supported catalyst of P-Mo-V heteropoly acid (CsNH4KPMoV) active components supported on kaolin were prepared, and were characterized by FT-IR, TG/DTA, XRD, N2 -adsorption and desorption, NH3-TPD, TPO-MS and XPS. The results show that kaolin was weak acidity and the negative charge on the surface of kaolin promoted the reduction of V5+ species to V4+(VO2+) active species. There was a strong electron interaction between kaolin and HPVA, and chemical adsorption occurred by DFT calculations. Under optimal conditions, higher MAL conversion (81.8%) and Methacrylic acid (MAA) selectivity (88.2%) were obtained by 50CsNH4KPMoV/kaolin catalyst. The Keggin structure was maintained and the acid strength and acidity did not decrease after the catalyst was used continuously for 100 h. There was no carbon deposition in the reaction process.

Abstract:A strategy combing homogeneous precipitation and hydrothermal treatment was proposed to prepare Keggin-type (NH4)Cu0.2H2.8PMo11VO40 for selective oxidation of methacrolein (MAL) to methacrylic acid (MAA). The effects of the preparation conditions on the catalyst properties and catalytic performance were investigated. Compared with traditional precipitation, homogeneous precipitation could provide a homogenized supersaturation for crystal initial nucleation, while the subsequent hydrothermal treatment process under high pressure could promote crystal led self-assembly growth of rectangular sediments. Benefiting from the advantages of this new method, the as-prepared (NH4)Cu0.2H2.8PMo11VO40 with high surface area and regular morphology had a large number of active species (VO2+) and acidic sites, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance of the catalyst. The MAL conversion and MAA selectivity over the optimum catalysts prepared at the hydrothermal temperature of 120 °C and for a time of 4 h reached above 80%. It is believed that this work offers a new strategy for the preparation of an effective catalyst for the oxidation reaction.

Abstract:A series of Au-supported cerium oxide binary composite oxides doped with different metals (M = Mn, Cu, Ni, and Co) were synthesized and applied to the oxidative esterification of methylacrolein (MAL) with methanol (MeOH) to methyl methacrylate. The structural properties and states of the supports and catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-Mass and transmission electron microscopy. The reducibility and basicity of Au/MnCeOx solid solution were tested by H-2-TPR and CO2-TPD. The effects of various operating parameters such as reaction temperature, reaction pressure, and reaction time were investigated. The highest activity with the conversion 99.9% and selectivity 90.6% for MAL can be observed using Au/MnCeOx as the catalyst because of its high reducibility and more amount of basic sites. The kinetics of gas-liquid-solid heterogeneously catalyzed oxidative esterification of MAL, O-2, and MeOH was studied. The possible reaction mechanism was also proposed.
Study on the Development of High-Performance P-Mo-V Catalyst and the Influence of Aldehyde Impurities on Catalytic Performance in Selective Oxidation of Methacrolein to Methacrylic Acid

Abstract:A series of KxH1.1-xCu0.2Cs1(NH4)1.5PVMo11O40 (KxCuCsNH4PVA) catalysts with different x values were synthesized to catalyze the selective oxidation of methacrolein (MAL) to methacrylic acid (MAA). The effects of potassium (K) ions on both the structure and catalytic activity were studied in detail. The optimum K0.6CuCsNH4PVA exhibited a large surface area, more acid sites, and abundant active species (V4+/VO2+) in the secondary structure of the Keggin structure, consequently offering good catalytic performance. Furthermore, K ions increased the MAA selectivity at the expense of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide (together defined as COX). Additionally, several process parameters for MAL oxidation were evaluated in the processing experiments. The effects of aldehyde impurities (formaldehyde and propanal) on the catalytic performance were investigated. Possible detrimental effects (catalyst poisoning and structural damage) of aldehyde impurities were excluded. A light decrease in MAL conversion could be attributed to the competitive adsorption of aldehyde impurities and MAL on the catalyst. Hopefully, this work contributes to the design of stable and feasible catalysts for the industrial production of MAA.

Abstract:MoS 2 quantum dot stabilized on magnetical copper ferrite (CuFe 2 O 4 ) was prepared. The structural and textural of the designed CuFe 2 O 4 /polydopamine (PDA)/MoS 2 were characterized. The heterogeneous CuFe 2 O 4 /PDA/MoS 2 catalytic system-driven direct α-hydromethylation of amides using methanol as a green and renewable C1 source and air as a sole oxidant under visible light irradiation has been established for the first time. A wide range of β-hydroxyamide derivatives were obtained in high yields with excellent functional group tolerance. The photocatalyst can be recycled by an external magnetic field and reused several times without appreciably decreasing its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Meldrum’s acid (MA) is utilized as a monomer to polymerize with diisocyanates to result in polyamides, containing MA moieties at polymer chains. This reaction is also employed to prepare isocyanate-terminated polyamide segments which are utilized as a precursor for preparation of MA-containing polyurethanes. Based on the thermolysis reaction of MA groups, followed by ketene dimerization reaction, the reactive polyamides and polyurethanes show self-cross-linkable features. The cross-linked polyurethanes exhibit good film formability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. A new MA-based polymerization method and a novel synthesis route for preparation of reactive polyamides and polyurethanes are demonstrated.
Oxidative Esterification of Methacrolein to Methyl Methacrylate over Supported Gold Catalysts Prepared by Colloid Deposition

Abstract:Esterification is one of the most pivotal organic transformations. Au catalysts were prepared by using a colloid deposition method with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a protective agent. The catalyst was used for the oxidative esterification of methacrylate (MAL) to methyl methacrylate (MMA). Three pre-treatments were used to remove the PVA, which is unfavorable for catalytic activity. It is found that the catalyst pre-treated at 300 degrees C showed substantially improved activity owing to the lower PVA loading compared with catalysts treated with hot water washing and water reflux. Surprisingly, it is also found that the distribution and loading content of Au particles was closely related to the pH of the colloid solution. We demonstrate that the deposition process is controlled by the different charge of the support surface at different colloid solution pH. Further, the catalysts with similar size Au particles loaded on TiO2, SiO2, Al2O3, CeO2, ZrO2, and ZnO were successfully prepared by controlling the colloid solution pH. The Au/ZnO catalyst presented the best performance, which may be a result of the strong basic surface sites that improved the formation of the intermediate and the strong interaction between Au and ZnO. This interaction caused an anchoring effect and changed the geometries of Au particles, which could enhance the stability of catalysts and promote the mobility of oxygen, respectively.

Abstract:Porous MnCeOx solid solutions nanorods (PN-MnCeOx) with different pore sizes were prepared using different carbon chain lengths ionic liquids (C(10)mimCl, C(12)mimCl and C(14)mimCl). Series of novel catalysts with nano-Au supported on the PN-MnCeOx, were synthesized and applied to oxidative esterification of aldehydes (benzaldehyde derivatives or methacrolein - MAL) to esters. Catalytic performance was evaluated in batch reactor and the relatively optimum catalyst was screened out. Kinds of characterization methods, such as XRD, TEM, XPS and BET, were applied to analyze crystal plane, microstructure, specific surface area, and porous structure of the catalysts and the structure-activity relationship could be reasonably explained. The cyclic stability of the catalyst was also tested more than 7 times using MAL and methanol for methyl methacrylate synthesis via one step oxidative esterification.

Abstract:Multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts are an effective strategy to drive chemical cascades, with attendant time, resource and cost efficiencies by eliminating unit operations arising in normal multistep processes. Despite advances in the design of such catalysts, the fabrication of proximate, chemically antagonistic active sites remains a challenge for inorganic materials science. Hydrogen-bonded organocatalysts offer new opportunities for the molecular level design of multifunctional structures capable of stabilising antagonistic active sites. We report the catalytic application of a charge-assisted, hydrogen-bonded crystalline material, bis(melaminium)adipate (BMA), synthesised from melamine and adipic acid, which possesses proximate acid-base sites. BMA exhibits high activity for the cascade deacetalisation-Knoevenagel condensation of dimethyl acetals to form benzylidenemalononitriles under mild conditions in water; BMA is amenable to large-scale manufacture and recycling with minimal deactivation. Computational modelling of the melaminium cation in protonated BMA explains the observed catalytic reactivity, and identifies the first demethoxylation step as rate-limiting, in good agreement with time-dependent 1H NMR and kinetic experiments. A broad substrate scope for the cascade transformation of aromatic dimethyl acetals is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this work, a novel procedure for immobilization of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) on Magnetic polycalix[4]resorcinarene grafted to chitosan by EDTA (calix-EDTA-Cs) was reported. The heterogeneous nanocomposite (CoFe 2 O 4 @calix-EDTA-Cs@PMA) was applied an acid nanocatalyst for the synthesis of 5-aroyl-NH-1,3-oxazolidine-2-ones through the reaction of α-epoxyketones with sodium cyanate (NaOCN) in polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a green solvent under ultrasonic irradiation conditions. Some features of this work include quick reaction time, high reaction yield, easy separation of the catalyst, thermal stability, and eco-friendly.

Upcycling of Polyamide Wastes to Tertiary Amines Using Mo Single Atoms and Rh Nanoparticles

Abstract:The pursuit of sustainable practices through the chemical recycling of polyamide wastes holds significant potential, particularly in enabling the recovery of a range of nitrogen-containing compounds. Herein, we report a novel strategy to upcycle polyamide wastes to tertiary amines with assistance of H2 in acetic acid under mild conditions (e.g., 180 oC), which is achieved over anatase TiO2 supported Mo single atoms and Rh nanoparticles. In this protocol, the polyamide is first converted into diacetamide intermediates via acidolysis, which are subsequent hydrogenated into corresponding carboxylic acid monomers and tertiary amines in 100% selectivity. It is verified that Mo single atom and Rh nanoparticles work together to activate both amide bonds of the diacetamide intermediate, and synergistically catalyze its hydrodeoxygenation to form tertiary amine, but this catalyst is ineffective for hydrogenation of carboxylic acid. This work presents an effective way to reconstruct various polyamide wastes into tertiary amines and carboxylic acids, which may have promising application potential.
