Abstract:Meldrum’s acid (MA) is utilized as a monomer to polymerize with diisocyanates to result in polyamides, containing MA moieties at polymer chains. This reaction is also employed to prepare isocyanate-terminated polyamide segments which are utilized as a precursor for preparation of MA-containing polyurethanes. Based on the thermolysis reaction of MA groups, followed by ketene dimerization reaction, the reactive polyamides and polyurethanes show self-cross-linkable features. The cross-linked polyurethanes exhibit good film formability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. A new MA-based polymerization method and a novel synthesis route for preparation of reactive polyamides and polyurethanes are demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper presents a new synthetic route to hyperbranched polymer. An arylene bipropiolate monomer, dimethylmethylenebis(1,4-phenylene) bipropiolate, was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction of bisphenol A with propiolic acid. Polycyclotrimrtization of the monomer was effected by reflux in dimethylformamide (DMF), producing a soluble hyperbranched poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene) in a good yield. The polymer was perfectly branched with a degree of branching of 100%.

Abstract:Water is an abundant, natural, and sustainable resource. However, it has not been used as a monomer for the construction of polymers. In this paper, we take this challenge and develop a new polymerization of water and triple-bond based monomers of isocyanides and bromoalkynes, and polyamides with high molecular weights (up to 41 700) and stereoregularities (the fraction of Z-isomer generally higher than 80%) are obtained in excellent yields (up to 98.1%) under mild reaction conditions. The polymers possess good solubility and exhibit high thermal stability and refractive index. The tetraphenylethene-containing polymers show the unique aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) characteristics. Moreover, thanks to their containing bromoacrylamide groups in the main chains, these polyamides could be easily easily postmodified through different reactions, providing a convenient platform for polymer functionalization. Thus, this work not only established a stereoselective polymerization of water and triple-bond based monomers but also provided a powerful strategy for the preparation of functional polyamides under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Efficient synthesis of poly(enamine)s has been a great challenge because of their poor stability, poor solubility, and low molecular weights. In this work, a spontaneous amino-yne click polymerization for the efficient preparation of poly(enamine)s was established, which could proceed with 100% atom efficiency under very mild conditions without any external catalyst. Through systematic optimization of the reaction conditions, several soluble and thermally stable poly(β-aminoacrylate)s with high molecular weights (Mw up to 64400) and well-defined structures were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%). Moreover, the polymerization can perform in a regio- and stereospecific fashion. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra analysis revealed that solely anti-Markovnikov additive products with 100% E-isomer were obtained. The reaction mechanism was well demonstrated with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. In addition, by introducing the tetraphenylethene moiety, the resulting polymers exhibit unique aggregation-induced emission characteristics and could be applied in explosives detection and bioimaging. This polyhydroamination is a new type of click polymerization and opens up enormous opportunities for preparing functional polymeric materials.

Abstract:The straightforward synthesis of polyamide-derived statistical copolymers with catechol, amine, amide and hydroxy residues via free radical polymerization is presented. In particular, catechol, amine and amide residues are present in natural mussel foot proteins, enabling strong underwater adhesion due to synergistic effects where cationic residues displace hydration and ion layers, followed by strong short-rang hydrogen bonding between the catechol or primary amides and SiO2 surfaces. The present study is aimed at investigating whether such synergistic effects also exist for statistical copolymer systems that lack the sequence-defined positioning of functional groups in mussel foot proteins. A series of copolymers is established and the adsorption in saline solutions on SiO2 is determined by quartz crystal microbalance measurements and ellipsometry. These studies confirm a synergy between cationic amine groups with catechol units and primary amide groups via an increased adsorptivity and increased polymer layer thicknesses. Therefore, the free radical polymerization of catechol, amine and amide monomers as shown here may lead to simplified mussel-inspired adhesives that can be prepared with the readily scalable methods required for large-scale applications.

Abstract:Functional polyimides (PIs) having some desired properties, for example, organo-solubility, chemical reactivity, crosslinkable feature, and high transparency in visible region, are attractive for specific applications. This work reports an effort to integrate the above-mentioned properties in one polyimide through introduction of Meldrum's acid (MA) moieties to polyimide chains with using a MA-containing diamine (MADA) as a monomer. The polyimide prepared with MADA and 4,4 '-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) (PI[MADA-6FDA]) has a number-averaged molecular weight of 56,800 g mol(-1), shows good solubility in tetrahydrofuran and aprotic high polar solvents, and exhibits post-reactivity/crosslinkability through MA-mediated ketene chemistry. Crosslinked PI(MADA-6FDA) film shows a glass transition temperature of 289 degrees C, a dielectric constant of about 2.78, and high flexibility bearing a near-180 degrees bending. The MA-mediated ketene chemistry contributes to in situ building up covalent linkages between PI chains and silica nanoparticles (SNPs) in preparation of PI/SNPs nanocomposite films (NCF). Formation of the PI/SNPs NCFs enhances the thermal and mechanical properties, reduces the dielectric constants, and increases the transparency. The properties of the MA-functionalized PI are attractive for further studies on their applications.
A Self-Protection Effect of Monomers on Preventing Gelation in Synthesis of Main-Chain Polybenzoxazines with High Molecular Weights

Abstract:Self-cross-linkable main-chain polybenzoxazines (PBz) could be directly obtained with polymerization of a diamine, a bisphenol compound, and formaldehyde. Two major concerns of preparation of main-chain PBz are gelation in the polymerization system and low molecular weight of the PBz products. In this work, an effective approach to address the issues has been demonstrated with employing a Meldrum's acid-containing diamine (MADA) as a functional monomer. MADA could retard the trimerization of methylol groups and formation of cyclic triazines in the polymerization system through the interaction between MA and methylol groups, so as to prevent gelation occurring in the polymerization system. With the self-protection of the diamine monomers, adjustments of the used solvents have been done to prevent PBz precipitation from the polymerization solution in the duration of reaction and consequently to result in an increase in the molecular weights of the prepared PBz (MW: 12500 Da; inherent viscosity: 0.39 dL g(-1)). Moreover, the MA groups provide additional cross-linking sites to the PBz chains, so as to increase the cross-linking density and enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of the corresponding cross-linked PBz. The MADA-based cross-linked PBz shows good film formability, film flexibility with a near -180 degrees bending, a high glass transition temperature (350 degrees C), and a Young's modulus of 2.26 GPa. The values are superior over the data (T-g: 267 degrees C; Young's modulus: 1.74 GPa) found with the conventional 4,4'-oxydianiline-based cross-linked PBz. Significant advances on both PBz synthesis and cross-linked PBz properties have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Aromatic polyamides were prepared by an AlCl3 or HCl-catalyzed polymerization of toluene diisocyanate or methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) with adipic acid at low temperatures (less than or equal to 100 degrees C) in a short reaction time (3-4 h). The intrinsic viscosity of the polymers was approximately 1.1 dL/g as determined at 25 degrees C with m-cresol as solvent. indicating that the polyamides obtained by this method have relatively high molecular weights. The polymers exhibit high glass transition temperatures and good thermal stability.

Abstract:Postpolymerization modification using “click” reactions has been proven to be a powerful method to build functional polymers, but the way to construct dynamic functional polymers remains challenging. In this work, CC/CN dynamic exchange reaction between Meldrum’s acid condensate and aldimine was employed to establish an efficient dynamic PPM method. Under the condition of catalyst free and room temperature, the conversion of PPM based on CC/CN dynamic exchange reaction can be up to more than 90%. Furthermore, reactive polymer coatings for in situ generating dyes with different absorbance wavelengths (λmax = 360–605 nm) and rewritable fluorescent papers were successfully developed by using dynamic PPM to tune the electron donor−π-acceptor structures in MA condensates on polymers.

Abstract:Polyamides represent one class of materials that is important in modern society. Because of the numerous potential applications of polyamides in various fields, there is a high demand for new polyamide structures, which necessitates the development of new polymerization methods. Herein, we report a novel and efficient palladium-catalyzed hydroaminocarbonylative polymerization of dienes and diamines for the synthesis of cycloaliphatic polyamides. The method employs readily available starting materials, proceeds in an atom-economic manner, and creates a series of new functional polyamides in high yields and high molecular weights. In contrast with the traditional polyamides based on adipic acid, the cycloaliphatic polyamides have superior thermal resistance, higher glass-transition temperature, and better solubility in common organic solvents, thus probably featuring the merits of high-performance and good processability.

Abstract:Visible light-induced polymerization, as a promising and green strategy, is showing great potential in preparing value-added polymers. Herein, a visible light photoredox catalysis method is reported to afford a library of polyamide with high yields (up to 99%) and high molecular weights (Mws) (up to 71 000 g mol-1). Dithioacids and diamines as the monomers, and 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium tetrafluoroborate (Mes-Acr-MeBF4) as the organic photoredox catalyst give the polyamides with structural diversity in air under mild conditions without extra metal, base, or additives.

Abstract:Meldrum's acid mediated ketene chemistry (MAMKC) is applied to synthesis of poly(ester amide)s in this work. An MA‐functionalized phenolic amide compound (MA_PhOH‐Am) is synthesized from the reaction between a MA‐functionalized amine and 3,4‐dihydrocoumarine (DHC, a biomass‐based chemical) through amine‐lactone addition reaction. Polymerization of MA_PhOH‐Am results in the corresponding poly(ester amide) (P(Es‐Am)), through MA thermolysis reaction (generating the corresponding ketene groups) and ketene‐phenol addition reaction. Both MA_PhOH‐Am and P(Es‐Am) have been characterized with spectral methods and thermal analysis. P(Es‐Am) has an inherent viscosity of 0.49 dL g−1, a molecular weight of 76,500 Da, a glass transition temperature of 145°C (tanδ peak in dynamic mechanical analysis), a thermal stability of about 320°C, and a storage modulus at 50°C of 1.0 GPa. In the stress–strain measurement, P(Es‐Am) exhibits a Young's modulus, a tensile strength, and an elongation at break of 10.6 ± 0.7 GPa, 165 ± 40 MPa, and 1.83 ± 0.41%, respectively. An effective approach for the synthesis of high‐performance poly(ester amide)s has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Various water-soluble hyperbranched poly(ester amine)s were synthesized by the direct polyaddition of diamines to diacrylates in the absence of a catalyst. Each diamine contained a secondary amino group and a primary amino group such as 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine, N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine, or N-ethylethylenediamine. When the ratio of diacrylate to diamine was 1/1, no gelation was observed throughout the polymerization. When the ratio of diacrylate to diamine was 3/2, no crosslinking occurred in the diluted solution, whereas an insoluble network formed in the concentrated solution. Fourier transform infrared and mass spectrometry were used to investigate the reaction procedure. The secondary amino group of diamine reacted faster with the vinyl group of diacrylate; this resulted in the formation of the intermediate with an acrylate group and two active hydrogen atoms attached to a nitrogen atom. Further self-polyaddition of the intermediate, a kind of AB(2)type monomer, gave the hyperbranched poly(ester amine). (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:AbstractTwo new routes to polyamides were established, based on the polycondensation of two new typical active diesters: the active diester of N‐hydroxy‐5‐norbornene‐2,3‐dicarboximide, such as N,N′‐(terephthaloyldioxy)bis(5‐norbornene‐2,3‐dicarboximide), and the active diester of 3‐hydroxy‐4‐oxo‐3,4‐dihydro‐1,2,3‐benzotriazine, such as 3,3′‐(isophthaloyldioxy)bis(4‐oxo‐3,4‐dihydro‐1,2,3‐benzotriazine) with diamines. The polycondensation occurred at room temperature in solution without added catalyst. Dipolar aprotic solvents which included dimethyl sulfoxide and N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone were used as solvents for polymerization. Before polymer synthesis the aminolysis of two active monoesters was carried out as a model compound study.

Abstract:Inspired by arylamide-based oligomeric foldermers that are stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding, a series of polyamides with intramolecular hydrogen-bonding motifs were synthesized via polycondensation reactions. These polymers can fold into helical conformation different from their linear control. The chirality of helical conformation can further be tuned via acid-base complexation using chiral residues.
Preparation and characterization of novel hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s from Michael addition polymerizations of trifunctional amines with diacrylamides

Abstract:Novel hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s containing tertiary amines in the backbones and acryl as terminal groups were synthesized via the Michael addition polymerizations of trifunctional amines with twofold molar diacrylamide. The hyperbranched structures of these poly(amido amine)s were verified by C-13 NMR (INVGATE). The polymerization mechanisms were clarified by following the polymerization process with NMR method, and the results show that the reactivity of secondary amine formed in situ is much lower than that of the secondary amine in 1-(2-aminoethyl) piperazine (AEPZ) ring and the primary amine. The secondary amine formed in situ was almost kept out of the reaction before the primary and secondary amines in AEPZ were consumed, leading to the formation of the AB2 intermediate, and the further reaction of the AB2 yielded the hyperbranched polymers. The molecular weights and properties of poly(amindo amine)s obtained were characterized by GPC, DSC, and TGA, respectively. Based on the reaction of active acryl groups in the polymers obtained with glucosamine, hyperbranched polymers containing sugar were formed. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
