Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of nitrate (NO3-) is an efficient approach to reduce NO3- pollutants and it offers a promising alternative for sustainable NH3 synthesis. However, this process is limited by the mismatched reaction kinetics of NO3- discharge, active hydrogen (H*) formation via water dissociation, and stepwise hydrogenation processes. Herein, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we screened a library of Cu-M diatomic catalysts coordinated with a N doped carbon matrix (Cu-M-N-C, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Zn) by balancing N-containing intermediate adsorption and H2O dissociation barriers. Among these catalysts, Cu-Fe-N-C demonstrates the best performance with a NH3 yield rate of 1.22 mmol h(-1) cm(-2) and a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH3 synthesis of 95.08% at -0.8 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, in which diatomic sites facilitate the first NO3- discharge step to generate adsorbed *NO3 and lower the energy barriers of the following hydrogenation/dehydration steps. More importantly, the incorporated Fe sites could promote the H2O dissociation, providing a large supply of H* for the deep hydrogenation of N-containing intermediates. This work reveals the tunable bonding interactions of diatomic sites with multiple reactant/intermediates, offering a new avenue for rational design of highly efficient atomic-level dispersed catalysts for both NO3- abatement and NH3 synthesis.
Recent Nh3-Scr Mechanism Research over Cu/Sapo-34 Catalyst

Abstract:The preliminary mechanism research of NH3-SCR and NH3 oxidation over Cu/SAPO-34 catalyst is explored. The XRD, SEM, in situ EPR, NH3-SCR, NH3 oxidation test, DRIFTs, and the kinetic tests were performed for the bulk characterization, catalytic activity measurement, and the mechanism estimation. The NH3-SCR result showed that Cu/SAPO-34 revealed excellent activity during 120-600 degrees C, while the NH3 oxidation appeared above 300 degrees C and caused the decline of NO conversion. The order of various reactants (NO, NH3, and O-2 for NH3-SCR and NH3, O-2, for NH3 oxidation) was estimated by the kinetic tests to explain their behaviors during the NH3-SCR process. The NH3-SCR presents strong dependence on adsorbed NH3 species on Cu/SAPO-34, but the NH3 oxidation does not. Furthermore, the EPR experiment proved that the isolated Cu2+ species are the active sites and the ammonia nitrites species are the intermediate for NH3-SCR over Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts. The different behavior of adsorbed NH3 species in NH3-SCR and NH3 oxidation was studied through DRIFTs to explain the competition between the two reactions for NH3 consumption at high temperature. Meanwhile, combining the results of previous research, the primary reaction mechanism over Cu/SAPO-34 during the NH3-SCR process was conducted.

Abstract:Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts with varied Cu loadings were synthesized through ion exchange to study the influence of water on the NH3-SCR reaction. The catalytic activities were evaluated by selective catalytic reduction of NO under a reactant feed in the presence/absence of water. Transient experiments were designed to study the response of NO conversion to the presence of water. H2-TPR and DFT calculations were performed to study the reducibility of Cu species. NH3-TPD and XPS were conducted to reveal the migration of Cu species. The results show that water could remarkably improve NO reduction activities and the promoting effect is more significant on the catalyst with low Cu loading. Both transient and permanent influences were found in this promoting phenomenon. For the transient influence, water has been proved to accelerate the re-oxidation half-cycle. Moreover, water can enhance the promoting effect of the SCR feed on the migration of Cu species. These unanchored Cu ions migrate to defect sites to form active sites, which lead to a permanent influence of water.

Water-Driven Surface Lattice Oxygen Activation in MnO2 for Promoted Low-Temperature NH3-SCR

Abstract:Water is ubiquitous in various heterogeneous catalytic reactions, where it can be easily adsorbed, chemically dissociated, and diffused on catalyst surfaces, inevitably influencing the catalytic process. However, the specific role of water in these reactions remains unclear. In this study, we innovatively propose that H2O-driven surface lattice oxygen activation in γ-MnO2 significantly enhances low-temperature NH3-SCR. The proton from water dissociation activates the surface lattice oxygen in γ-MnO2, giving rise to a doubling of catalytic activity (achieving 90% NO conversion at 100 °C) and remarkable stability. Comprehensive in situ characterizations and calculations reveal that spontaneous proton diffusion to the surface lattice oxygen reduces the orbital overlap between the protonated oxygen atom and its neighboring Mn atom. Consequently, the Mn-O bond is weakened and the surface lattice oxygen is effectively activated to provide excess oxygen vacancies available for converting O2 into O2-. Therefore, the redox property of Mn-H is improved, leading to enhanced NH3 oxidation-dehydrogenation and NO oxidation processes, which are crucial for low-temperature NH3-SCR. This work provides a deeper understanding and fresh perspectives on the water promotion mechanism in low-temperature NOx elimination.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of commercial Cu-SSZ-13 monolith catalysts was measured in the presence and absence of water, which demonstrated an inhibiting role below 300 degrees C and a promoting role above 300 degrees C. Furthermore, temperature-programed desorption illustrated that hydrolysis of Z(2)Cu would take place to generate ZCuIIOH and [Cu(H2O)(6)](2+) species, which inhibited ammonia adsorption over Lewis acid sites but promoted nitrate formation and gaseous NO2 desorption. The temperature-programed surface reaction and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) were further performed to elucidate the influence of water on reaction mechanisms. Basically, the NH3-SCR reaction mainly took place at Cu centers acting as Lewis acid sites of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts in the low-temperature regime. Water inhibited the reaction by occupying and blocking Lewis acid sites to prevent [Cu(NH3)(2)](2+) formation and NO oxidation from occurring, limiting the formation of NH4NO3 intermediates. In the high-temperature regime, gaseous NO2 could directly interact with NH4+ molecules adsorbed onto Bronsted acid sites. The addition of water could facilitate the production of gaseous NO2 decomposed by surface nitrates and further promote the NH3-SCR reaction rate at high temperatures.
Comparison of NH3-SCO Performance over CuOx/H-SSZ-13 and CuOx/H-SAPO-34 Catalysts

Abstract:In this work, CuOx/Chabazite(CHA, SSZ-13, SAPO-34 etc) catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation method for ammonia selective catalytic oxidation. CuOx/H-SSZ-13 exhibited superior NH3 conversion and N-2 selectivity compared with CuOx/H-SAPO-34 below 300 degrees C under both dry and wet conditions. The better low-temperature activity of CuOx/H-SSZ-13 was due to its greater NH3 adsorption and activation capacity. DRIFTS results showed that -NH2 and -NH radicals can be observed on the spectra of CuOx/H-SSZ-13, whereas, only -NH2 radicals were obtained on the spectra of CuOx/H-SAPO-34. CuOx (including CuO and Cu2O) were determined as active phases of the catalysts using XRD and XPS results. The catalytic performance of CuOx/CHA catalysts was reversibly suppressed in the presence of H2O and SO2 regarding the formation of NH4HSO4 and (NH4)(2)SO4 on the catalysts surface. Furthermore, CuSO4 was also formed and could not decompose until 700 degrees C. However, it showed less influence on the catalytic performance.
Urea-related Reactions and Their Active Sites over Cu-SAPO-34: Formation of NH3 and Conversion of HNCO

Abstract:Urea-SCR is an efficient method to reduce NOx emission from diesel vehicles, but the active sites of Cu-SAPO-34 for urea-related reactions have not been well identified. In the present work, a series of Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts with different copper species were prepared and tested for urea thermolysis, urea hydrolysis and urea-SCR. Temperature-programmed experiments and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS) were used to determine isolated Cu2+ ions as the main active sites for these reactions. HNCO (isocyanic acid) and NH3 are formed via urea thermolysis. HNCO is less active than NH3 to interact with NO, and most of HNCO is hydrolyzed to produce NH3 in urea-SCR. In the presence of NO2, the reactivity of HNCO as a reducing agent is promoted, but both HNCO-SCR and HNCO hydrolysis would be inhibited by the deposition of NH4NO3. These findings provide a foundation for improving deNO efficiency of Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts on diesel vehicles.

Abstract:A novel Mo-doped CuO catalyst is developed and used for low-temperature NH3-SCR reaction. Compared with the undoped CuO sample, the Mo doped CuO catalyst shows an increased SCR performance with above 80% NOx conversion at 175 °C. The XRD and Raman results have confirmed the incorporation of Mo metal ions into CuO lattice to form Mo-O-Cu species which may be related to the enhanced SCR activity. The XPS and UV–vis results reveal the creation of electron interaction between Cu and Mo in this Mo-O-Cu system which provides an increased amount of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, thereby promoting the adsorption capacity of NH3 and NOx as verified by NH3-TPD and NOx-TPD characterization. Besides, it also promotes the formation of oxygen vacancies, leading to the increasing of chemisorbed oxygen species, which improves the NO oxidation to NO2 activity. Furthermore, in situ DRIFTS technology was also used to study the reaction mechanism of this Mo doped CuO catalyst. The formed NO2 could react with NHx (x = 3, 2) species to enhance the low-temperature NH3-SCR activity via the “fast-SCR” reaction pathway. The nitrate and nitrite ad-species may react with NH3 and NH4 + ad-species through the L-H pathway.

Promoting effect of Cu as electron transfer medium on NH3-SCO reaction in asymmetric Ag-Ov-Ti-Sm-Cu ring active site

Abstract:Selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH3-SCO) has become an effective method to reduce ammonia (NH3) emissions, and is a key part to solve the problem of NH3 pollution. Nevertheless, the optimization of this technology's performance relies heavily on innovation and the development of catalyst design. In this study, a SmCuAgTiOx catalyst with an asymmetric Ag-Ov-Ti-Sm-Cu ring active site was prepared and applied to the NH3-SCO reaction. The low conversion of Cu-based catalysts in NH3 at low temperature and the inherent low N₂ selectivity of Ag-based catalysts were solved. The successful creation of the asymmetric ring active site improved the catalyst's reduction performance. Additionally, Cu, acting as an electron transfer medium, plays a crucial role in enhancing electron transfer within the asymmetric ring active site, thus increasing the redox cycle of the catalyst during the reaction. In addition, some lattice oxygen is lost in the catalyst, resulting in the formation of a large number of oxygen vacancies. This process stimulates the adsorption and activation of surface-adsorbed oxygen, facilitating the conversion of NH3 to an amide (NH2) intermediate during the reaction and reducing non-selective oxidation. The N2 selectivity was improved without significantly affecting the performance of Ag-based catalyst. In-situ diffuse reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (In-situ DRIFTS) analysis reveals that the SmCuAgTiOx catalyst primarily follows an "internal" selective catalytic reduction (iSCR) mechanism in the NH3-SCO reaction, complemented by the imide mechanism. The asymmetric Ag-Ov-Ti-Sm-Cu ring active site developed in this study provides a new perspective for efficiently solving NH3 pollution in the future.
Low-temperature NH3 abatement via selective oxidation over a supported copper catalyst with high Cu+ abundance

Abstract:Selective catalytic NH3-to-N2 oxidation (NH3-SCO) is highly promising for abating NH3 emissions slipped from stationary flue gas after-treatment devices. Its practical application, however, is limited by the non-availability of low-cost catalysts with high activity and N2 selectivity. Here, using defect-rich nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT-AW) as the support, we developed a highly active and durable copper-based NH3-SCO catalyst with a high abundance of cuprous (Cu+) sites. The obtained Cu/NCNT-AW catalyst demonstrated outstanding activity with a T50 (i.e. the temperature to reach 50% NH3 conversion) of 174°C in the NH3-SCO reaction, which outperformed not only the Cu catalyst supported on N-free O-functionalized CNTs (OCNTs) or NCNT with less surface defects, but also those most active Cu catalysts in open literature. Reaction kinetics measurements and temperature-programmed surface reactions using NH3 as a probe molecule revealed that the NH3-SCO reaction on Cu/NCNT-AW follows an internal selective catalytic reaction (i-SCR) route involving nitric oxide (NO) as a key intermediate. According to mechanistic investigations by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the superior NH3-SCO performance of Cu/NCNT-AW originated from a synergy of surface defects and N-dopants. Specifically, surface defects promoted the anchoring of CuO nanoparticles on N-containing sites and, thereby, enabled efficient electron transfer from N to CuO, increasing significantly the fraction of SCR-active Cu+ sites in the catalyst. This study puts forward a new idea for manipulating and utilizing the interplay of defects and N-dopants on carbon surfaces to fabricate Cu+-rich Cu catalysts for efficient abatement of slip NH3 emissions via selective oxidation.
The Role of Pore Diffusion in Determining Nh3 Scr Active Sites over Cu/Sapo-34 Catalysts

Abstract:Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts have been extensively investigated recently for NOx selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions. Due to the small pore size (4.3 angstrom) of the zeolites, it is a natural concern that the reaction rates might be dictated by the pore diffusion regime rather than the intrinsic kinetics. In this work, a series of Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts, with identical Cu ion active site loadings but varying zeolite particle sizes (1-9 mu m), were evaluated. A variety of characterization techniques (XRD, BET, H-2 TPR, and NH3 TPD) have confirmed that the same copper species and surface chemistry existed in these samples despite the different SAPO-34 particle sizes. While the Thiele modules governing the pore diffusion effects were vastly different, up to nine times, these samples shared a similar turnover frequency (TOF) and apparent activation energy (44.8 +/- 3.0 kJ/mol) for the NH3 SCR reaction. These results unequivocally conclude that under the representative SCR reaction conditions investigated in this work, the reaction rates on Cu/SAPO-34 powder catalysts are kinetically controlled and pore diffusion plays little role in disguising the intact intrinsic activity per single-site copper. Abstract:A series of CuMnOx catalysts were prepared through the coprecipitation method to explore the effect of CO participation on the NH3- SCR reaction. The results showed that the CM-3 sample reached 100% conversion of CO and NO at a temperature lower than 175 °C; This is mainly because the correct proportion of copper and manganese helps to form solid solution and improve the coordination between metals. Moreover, the interaction principle of CO participating in the NH3-SCR reaction was thoroughly investigated through in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT). First, NH3 had varying adsorption modes at different temperatures; Second, NH3 and CO competed for the same active center, which significantly affected the catalytic reaction on the sample surface. Further, it was confirmed that the deposition of CO32- is the main reason for the decline in activity. Finally, the improvement in N2 selectivity in the reaction with CO participation was due to the produced N2O not being directly released but being further reduced to N2 through species such as CO.

Abstract:In this study, a core–shell catalyst of Cu-SAPO-34@Fe-MOR was successfully prepared through a silica-sol adhesion method, and its performance for selective catalytic reduction of nitric oxide by NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR) was evaluated in detail. The Fe-MOR coating has not only increased the high-temperature activity and broadened the reaction temperature window of Cu-SAPO-34 to a large extent, but also increased the hydrothermal stability of Cu-SAPO-34 markedly. It is demonstrated that a strong synergistic interaction effect exists between Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ ions and promotes the redox cycle and oxidation–reduction ability of copper ions, which greatly accelerates the catalytic performance of the core–shell Cu-SAPO-34@Fe-MOR catalyst. Abundant isolated Cu 2+ ions and Fe 3+ ions on the ion exchange sites performing NO x reduction at low and high temperature region lead to the broad reaction temperature window of Cu-SAPO-34@Fe-MOR. In addition, more weakly adsorbed NO x species formed and the increased number of Lewis acid sites may also contribute to the higher catalytic performance of Cu-SAPO-34@Fe-MOR. On the other hand, the better hydrothermal ageing stability of Cu-SAPO-34@Fe-MOR is related to its lighter structural collapse, fewer acidic sites lost, more active components (Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ ) maintained, and more monodentate nitrate species formed in the core–shell catalyst after hydrothermal ageing. Last, the mechanism study has found that both Langmuir–Hinshelwood ("L–H") and Eley–Rideal ("E–R") mechanisms play an essential role in the catalytic process of Cu-SAPO-34@Fe-MOR, and constitute another reason for its higher activity compared with that of Cu-SAPO-34 (only "L–H" mechanism).

Abstract:Selective catalytic ammonia-to-dinitrogen oxidation (NH3-SCO) is highly promising for the abatement of NH3 emissions from flue gas purification devices. However, there is still a lack of high-performance and cost-effective NH3-SCO catalysts for real applications. Here, highly dispersed, electron-deficient Cu-based catalysts were fabricated using nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) as support. In NH3-SCO catalysis, the Cu/NCNT outperformed Cu supported on N-free CNTs (Cu/OCNT) and on other types of supports (i.e., activated carbon, Al2O3, and zeolite) in terms of activity, selectivity to the desired product N2, and H2O resistance. Besides, Cu/NCNT demonstrated a better structural stability against oxidation and a higher NH3 storage capacity (in the presence of H2O vapor) than Cu/OCNT. Quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the surface N species facilitated electron transfer from Cu to the NCNT support, resulting in electron-deficient Cu catalysts with superior redox properties, which are essential for NH3-SCO catalysis. By temperature-programmed surface reaction studies and systematic kinetic measurements, we unveiled that the NH3-SCO reaction over Cu/NCNT proceeded via the internal selective catalytic reaction (i-SCR) route; i.e., NH3 was oxidized first to NO, which then reacted with NH3 and O2 to form N2 and H2O. This study paves a new route for the design of highly active, H2O-tolerant, and low-cost Cu catalysts for the abatement of slip NH3 from stationary emissions via selective oxidation to N2.

Abstract:Low-temperature selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) is crucial for removing the NH3 slip from the upstream of NH3-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR). Herein, combining zeolite Cu-SAPO34 and the active oxidant mullite SmMn2O5, we developed mixed-phase catalysts SmMn2O5/Cu-SAPO34 by grinding powder mixtures to achieve a low-temperature activity and a reasonable N2 selectivity. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The evaluation of NH3 oxidation activity showed that for 30 wt % SmMn2O5/Cu-SAPO34, 90% NH3 conversion was at a temperature of 215 °C in the presence of 500 ppm NH3 and 21% O2 balanced with N2. The in situ DRIFTS spectra reveal the internal SCR mechanism (i-SCR), i.e., NH3 oxidizing to NO x on mullite and NO x subsequently to proceed with SCR reactions, leading to higher conversion and selectivity over the mixed catalysts. This work provides a strategy to design the compound catalyst to achieve low-temperature NH3 oxidation via synergistic utilization of the advantages of each individual catalyst.

Abstract:NH3 emissions from industrial sources and possibly future energy production constitute a threat to human health because of their toxicity and participation in PM2.5 formation. Ammonia selective catalytic oxidation to N2 (NH3-SCO) is a promising route for NH3 emission control, but the mechanistic origin of achieving high N2 selectivity remains elusive. Here we constructed a highly N2-selective CuO/TiO2 catalyst and proposed a CuOx dimer active site based on the observation of a quadratic dependence of NH3-SCO reaction rate on CuOx loading, ac-STEM, and ab initio thermodynamic analysis. Combining this with the identification of a critical N2H4 intermediate by in situ DRIFTS characterization, a comprehensive N2H4-mediated reaction pathway was proposed by DFT calculations. The high N2 selectivity originated from the preference for NH2 coupling to generate N2H4 over NH2 dehydrogenation on the CuOx dimer active site. This work could pave the way for the rational design of efficient NH3-SCO catalysts.
