Abstract:Selective catalytic ammonia-to-dinitrogen oxidation (NH3-SCO) is highly promising for the abatement of NH3 emissions from flue gas purification devices. However, there is still a lack of high-performance and cost-effective NH3-SCO catalysts for real applications. Here, highly dispersed, electron-deficient Cu-based catalysts were fabricated using nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) as support. In NH3-SCO catalysis, the Cu/NCNT outperformed Cu supported on N-free CNTs (Cu/OCNT) and on other types of supports (i.e., activated carbon, Al2O3, and zeolite) in terms of activity, selectivity to the desired product N2, and H2O resistance. Besides, Cu/NCNT demonstrated a better structural stability against oxidation and a higher NH3 storage capacity (in the presence of H2O vapor) than Cu/OCNT. Quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the surface N species facilitated electron transfer from Cu to the NCNT support, resulting in electron-deficient Cu catalysts with superior redox properties, which are essential for NH3-SCO catalysis. By temperature-programmed surface reaction studies and systematic kinetic measurements, we unveiled that the NH3-SCO reaction over Cu/NCNT proceeded via the internal selective catalytic reaction (i-SCR) route; i.e., NH3 was oxidized first to NO, which then reacted with NH3 and O2 to form N2 and H2O. This study paves a new route for the design of highly active, H2O-tolerant, and low-cost Cu catalysts for the abatement of slip NH3 from stationary emissions via selective oxidation to N2.

Abstract:One of the main challenges for NH3-SCR of NOx at low temperatures is developing a catalyst with exceptional low-temperature catalytic activity. Herein, four kinds of clay minerals including halloysite (Hte), Ca-montmorillonite (Ca-Mte), chlorite (Cte), and Na-montmorillonite (Na-Mte) were used as supports and impregnated with Fe and Cu to synthesize Fe-Cu/Hte, Fe-Cu/Ca-Mte, Fe-Cu/Cte, and Fe-Cu/Na-Mte catalysts, respectively. Within a temperature range of 180-240 degrees C, the resultant Fe-Cu/Hte catalyst produced more than 98 % NOx conversion and demonstrated the best low-temperature NH3-SCR catalytic performance. The characterization results indicated that the weakened crystallinity of active species, high ratios of Fe3+/Fe and Cu+/Cu, and more surface absorbed oxygen species, as well as excellent low-temperature redox ability and surface acidity all contributed to its outstanding low-temperature catalytic activity. The in situ DRIFT study at 240 degree celsius showed that two forms of the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism existed on the Fe-Cu/Hte and Fe-Cu/Cte catalysts, while the E-R and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) processes were both involved over the Fe-Cu/Ca-Mte and Fe-Cu/Na-Mte catalysts.
Tailoring the Proceeding of the NH3-SCO and NH3-SCR Reactions over FeOx Catalysts by Modifying with NbOx

Abstract:This study presents the synthesis of a series of FeOx-NbOx mixed oxide catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by NH3. By meticulously controlling the Fe/Nb molar ratio, we have rationally tailored the proceeding of the main reaction of NO reduction and the side reaction of NH3 oxidation to NOx. The incorporation of NbOx introduced a significant number of acid sites, which enhanced the adsorption of NH3 on the catalyst surface, particularly at elevated temperatures. Additionally, the oxidative capacity of the catalyst was moderated by the addition of NbOx, hindering the over-oxidation of NH3 to NO or NO2, thus preserving more NH3 to act as a reductant for NO reduction. Consequently, the NbOx-enriched samples exhibited improved deNO(x) performance. However, an excessive amount of NbOx led to a notably weakened oxidative ability, which negatively impacted the activation of reactants and resulted in decreased NO conversion at lower temperatures. The optimized catalyst presented >80 % NO conversion and >95 % N-2 selectivity within a temperature range of 250-400 degrees C. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of new catalysts with an extended operational temperature window.

Abstract:Low-temperature selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) is crucial for removing the NH3 slip from the upstream of NH3-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR). Herein, combining zeolite Cu-SAPO34 and the active oxidant mullite SmMn2O5, we developed mixed-phase catalysts SmMn2O5/Cu-SAPO34 by grinding powder mixtures to achieve a low-temperature activity and a reasonable N2 selectivity. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The evaluation of NH3 oxidation activity showed that for 30 wt % SmMn2O5/Cu-SAPO34, 90% NH3 conversion was at a temperature of 215 °C in the presence of 500 ppm NH3 and 21% O2 balanced with N2. The in situ DRIFTS spectra reveal the internal SCR mechanism (i-SCR), i.e., NH3 oxidizing to NO x on mullite and NO x subsequently to proceed with SCR reactions, leading to higher conversion and selectivity over the mixed catalysts. This work provides a strategy to design the compound catalyst to achieve low-temperature NH3 oxidation via synergistic utilization of the advantages of each individual catalyst.
Designing a Bifunctional Pt/Cu-SSZ-13 Catalyst for Ammonia-Selective Catalytic Oxidation with Superior Selectivity

Abstract:Ammonia-selective catalytic oxidation (NH3-SCO) is an effective technology to solve the problem of ammonia leakage from diesel vehicles, while ammonia oxidation catalysts (AOC) still suffer from insufficient low-temperature activity and poor nitrogen selectivity. Herein, we prepared a bifunctional Pt/Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst containing an SCO component (Pt) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) component (Cu). This bifunctional catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance during NH3 oxidation under practical conditions containing water vapor, achieving >85% N2 selectivity over the whole temperature range. Catalysts were systematically characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. The results showed that metallic Pt nanoparticles were mainly present on the exterior surface of the Pt/Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalyst, while dispersed Cu2+ cations were present in the interior of the zeolite. Based on operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy with mass spectrometry experiments, it was confirmed that on Pt/SSZ-13, over-oxidation of NH3 produced large amounts of N2O and NO x at low and high temperatures, respectively, resulting in a poor N2 selectivity. With Cu present, in contrast, the byproduct (NO) would further react with adsorbed NH3 on Cu Lewis acid sites to produce N2 by a tandem SCR reaction, thus contributing to the superior N2 selectivity of the Pt/Cu-SSZ-13 bifunctional catalyst.

Abstract:Selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH3-SCO) has become an effective method to reduce ammonia (NH3) emissions, and is a key part to solve the problem of NH3 pollution. Nevertheless, the optimization of this technology's performance relies heavily on innovation and the development of catalyst design. In this study, a SmCuAgTiOx catalyst with an asymmetric Ag-Ov-Ti-Sm-Cu ring active site was prepared and applied to the NH3-SCO reaction. The low conversion of Cu-based catalysts in NH3 at low temperature and the inherent low N₂ selectivity of Ag-based catalysts were solved. The successful creation of the asymmetric ring active site improved the catalyst's reduction performance. Additionally, Cu, acting as an electron transfer medium, plays a crucial role in enhancing electron transfer within the asymmetric ring active site, thus increasing the redox cycle of the catalyst during the reaction. In addition, some lattice oxygen is lost in the catalyst, resulting in the formation of a large number of oxygen vacancies. This process stimulates the adsorption and activation of surface-adsorbed oxygen, facilitating the conversion of NH3 to an amide (NH2) intermediate during the reaction and reducing non-selective oxidation. The N2 selectivity was improved without significantly affecting the performance of Ag-based catalyst. In-situ diffuse reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (In-situ DRIFTS) analysis reveals that the SmCuAgTiOx catalyst primarily follows an "internal" selective catalytic reduction (iSCR) mechanism in the NH3-SCO reaction, complemented by the imide mechanism. The asymmetric Ag-Ov-Ti-Sm-Cu ring active site developed in this study provides a new perspective for efficiently solving NH3 pollution in the future.
Structural Properties of PtCuO/Al2O3 surface catalyst for selective NH3 oxidation using operando spectroscopy

Abstract:Selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of NH3 to N2 is one of the most effective methods to eliminate NH3 emissions. However, achieving high conversion over a wide operating temperature range while avoiding over-oxidation to NOx is a significant challenge. Commercial Pt catalysts have full NH3 conversion at low temperatures but suffer from low N2 selectivity. To mitigate this challenge, it is crucial to limit the over-oxidation of NH3. In this study, we developed a bi-metal surface catalyst with improved Pt atom efficiency. The PtSCuO/Al2O3 catalyst consists of Pt atoms on the surface of CuO nanoparticles. It achieves full NH3 conversion at 250 °C with WHSV of 600 mlNH3h-1g-1 which is 50 °C lower than the commercial Pt/Al2O3, and maintains high N2 selectivity through all temperature window (150-450 °C). At 200 °C, PtSCuO/Al2O3, exhibited a staggering 30-fold increase in activity compared to the commercial Pt/Al2O3. Operando XAFS studies reveal that the surface Pt atoms in PtSCuO/Al2O3 not only enhance the redox ability of Cu species but also alter the redox rate of Cu species, which improves the while reaction rate of the NH3-SCO reaction. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Pt sites and Cu sites in PtSCuO/Al2O3 contributes to improved selectivity via the internal selective catalytic reduction (i-SCR) route.

Copper Doping Promotion on Ce/CAC-CNT Catalysts with High Sulfur Dioxide Tolerance for Low-Temperature NH 3 –SCR

Abstract:The stumbling block to the ever-increasing need for improving air quality remains nitrogen oxides (NO x ). The copper-introduced Ce/CAC-CNT (Cu x Ce/CAC-CNTs) catalyst using the in situ-growth-prepared activated carbon and carbon-nanotube composite (CAC-CNT) carrier with high sulfur dioxide tolerance was successfully applied to low-temperature NH3–SCR in this study. The findings indicate that the Cu x Ce/CAC-CNTs obtained at a 0.2 Cu/Ce molar ratio and the calcination temperature of 450 °C showed the highest 100% NO conversion with 95.8% N2 selectivity at 150 °C and 10 000 h–1. The incorporation of Cu improved the Cu0.2Ce/CAC-CNTs in Lewis acid, lattice oxygen (31.99%), and Ce3+ (26.03%). The accelerated NH3 adsorption on acid sites, the encouraging electron transfer by the Ce4+ + Cu+ ↔ Ce3+ + Cu2+ redox circle, and the more surface chemisorbed oxygen (Oβ) improved the catalytic activity of Cu0.2Ce/CAC-CNTs. The NH3–SCR of Cu0.2Ce/CAC-CNTs largely follows the L–H mechanism, together with a certain degree of “Fast SCR.” The added Cu species effectively prevented surface SO2 adsorption and oxidation, and the Cu0.2Ce/CAC-CNTs restored more than 94% SCR activity after 8 h of poisoning in 50 ppm SO2 and 5 vol % H2O.

Abstract:NH3 emissions from industrial sources and possibly future energy production constitute a threat to human health because of their toxicity and participation in PM2.5 formation. Ammonia selective catalytic oxidation to N2 (NH3-SCO) is a promising route for NH3 emission control, but the mechanistic origin of achieving high N2 selectivity remains elusive. Here we constructed a highly N2-selective CuO/TiO2 catalyst and proposed a CuOx dimer active site based on the observation of a quadratic dependence of NH3-SCO reaction rate on CuOx loading, ac-STEM, and ab initio thermodynamic analysis. Combining this with the identification of a critical N2H4 intermediate by in situ DRIFTS characterization, a comprehensive N2H4-mediated reaction pathway was proposed by DFT calculations. The high N2 selectivity originated from the preference for NH2 coupling to generate N2H4 over NH2 dehydrogenation on the CuOx dimer active site. This work could pave the way for the rational design of efficient NH3-SCO catalysts.
Optimization of isolated copper species on the NH 3 -SCR performance over Cu/SSZ-39 modified by ammonia water

Abstract:To further improve the activity of Selective Catalytic Reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO x ) with Ammonia (NH 3 -SCR) and the hydrothermal stability at 900 °C on Cu-based small-pore zeolite catalyst, the interaction between ammonia water and Cu 2+ is used to regulate the interaction between Cu 2+ and Si-O-Al structures of the zeolite, and affect the migration of Cu 2+ in the channels of zeolite. The characterization results show that the microchemical environment of isolated Cu 2+ species is optimized, and more isolated Cu 2+ species can stably exist over the surface of Cu/SSZ-39, exhibiting a strong redox property. Besides, the ability of acid sites to adsorb and activate NH 3 is also enhanced, and the amount of H 2 O adsorbed in the pores of zeolite is reduced due to the stable surface isolated Cu 2+ species, which is conducive to the stability of the catalyst after hydrothermal aging at 900 °C. When the mole ratio of ammonia and copper is 3, the NH 3 -SCR performance and the hydrothermal stability at 900 oC are both optimized on the modified catalyst. The temperature window that the NO x conversion is higher than 90% (ΔT 90 ) on the unmodified catalyst is 200–475 °C, but the ΔT 90 on the modified catalyst is broadened to 178–544 °C. More importantly, after hydrothermal aging at 900 oC, the ΔT 90 on the modified catalyst is shifted to the higher temperature by 48 oC, with the maximum NO x conversion of 96%. This work would provide a new strategy for further optimizing Cu/SSZ-39 catalyst for deNO x emitted from diesel engines to meet higher emission standards in future.

Abstract:The selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH3-SCO) to N2 and H2O is a highly efficient method for eliminating NH3 pollution. However, it is still a challenge to develop low-cost and high-performance catalysts. Herein, zeolite-like ion-exchanged Cu-attapulgite (Cu-ATP) catalysts which are cheap enough have been originally developed for NH3-SCO, and the obtained Cu-ATP catalysts exhibit comparable NH3-SCO performance to the conventional Cu-zeolite catalysts. The dominant Cu2+ active sites in Cu-ATP facilitate the adsorption and activation of NH3 and O2, leading to high activity (T90 = 300 °C) and N2 selectivity (100%) over a wide temperature range from 180 °C to 390 °C. Temperature-programmed surface reaction and in situ Diffused Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy studies reveal that the NH3-SCO reaction at Cu2+ sites proceed via the internal selective catalytic reaction (i-SCR) pathway, with NO2 serving as the key intermediate. This work paves a way for developing natural clay-based zeolite-like catalysts, which is expected to replace zeolite catalysts in various reactions.

Low temperature SCR denitration with NH3 by highly dispersed Ni–Cu Sites: An insight into surface acidity and redox ability

Abstract:Surface acidity and redox ability are critical factors affecting the NH3 and NO adsorption-activation in the selective catalytic reduction of NO x with NH3 (NH3-SCR). Herein, Cu y Ni3- y AlO x (y represents the Cu/Al ratio) mixed oxides with highly dispersed Ni-Cu dual active sites were constructed from the layered double hydroxide precursors to optimize the acidity and redox ability. Compared with other Cu y Ni3- y AlO x (<80%), Cu1.5Ni1.5AlO x delivered a NO x conversion as high as 90% at 200 °C. Moreover, Cu1.5Ni1.5AlO x possessed superior N2 selectivity (92% above 200 °C), catalytic stability (64 h), and H2O and SO2 resistance. Characterization demonstrated that Cu and Ni species in Cu y Ni3- y AlO x had interactions, and the interactions were derived from the electron transfer and influenced by the Ni/Cu ratio, inducing the formation of highly dispersed Ni–Cu sites. Cu1.5Ni1.5AlO x with a Ni/Cu ratio of 1 achieved the strongest interaction. That interaction could inhibit nanosheet agglomeration, increase surface acidity, and improve low-temperature reducibility, in favor of NH3 and NO adsorption/activation. It was discovered that the Ni–Cu sites participated in the NO and O2 activation, respectively, and accounted for the NH3 adsorption-activation, synergistically. More active intermediates (NH3/NH4 +, bridging/bidentate nitrate) were produced by Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms over Cu1.5Ni1.5AlO x . This study offered light on fabricating effective functionalized active sites to promote NH3-SCR performance.

Abstract:Gaseous Ammonia (NH 3 ) is harmful to both human health and the environment. Selective catalytic oxidation of NH 3 (NH 3 -SCO) to N 2 and H 2 O is a highly promising method for the elimination of gaseous NH 3 . Considering catalyst performance and cost, Ag-based catalysts are regarded as the candidates with the most potential. In this paper, we summarize the research advances in the field of NH 3 -SCO by Ag-based catalysts, which have aroused extensive interests in the past decades. We highlight the influence of the catalyst composition and physicochemical properties of Ag-based catalysts on NH 3 -SCO performance, and give an overview of the catalytic reaction mechanism and the structure-activity relationship of catalysts. Finally, directions and design strategies for high-performance Ag based catalysts in NH 3 -SCO are also provided.

Abstract:The N2 selectivity of selective catalytic oxidation of NH3 (NH3-SCO) at high temperatures is a great challenge. CeSnO x catalysts were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and systematically investigated. CeSnO x catalysts exhibited excellent N2 selectivity at high temperatures compared to CeO2. The possible SCO reaction mechanism and synergistic effect over CeSnO x catalysts for NH3-SCO performance were investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) characterization manifested that the concentrations of Oads, Ce3+, and acid sites were increased. It is speculated that the reaction mechanism followed the internal-SCR (i-SCR) mechanism through in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was verified that after doping Sn, the oxygen vacancy of CeSnO x catalysts possessed reduced formation energy, resulting from the shifting of electron density to Sn, redistribution of charge, and the smaller conduction band of O 2p, which also could be much easier to adsorb and stabilize oxygen as active sites. In addition, Sn doping succeeded in inhibiting the competitive adsorption of OH and NH3 on the Ce site because Sn could preferentially adsorb OH and then adsorb and activate NH3. This work reveals the synergistic effect over CeSnO x catalysts for NH3-SCO performance, which is conducive to the rational design of cheap SCO catalysts replacing noble-metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:Five ZSM-5-based catalysts with diverse zeolitic morphologies were prepared to experimentally investigate and computationally analyze the correlation between crystal plane and copper species. The types and numbers of copper species dispersed over Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts were emphatically determined to elucidate the structure-performance relationship of the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst with broad sheet in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by NH3. This study indicates that the broad Cu-ZSM-5 sheet exhibits outstanding low-temperature performance, achieving complete NOx removal at 250–550 °C. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments demonstrated this nanosheet catalyst has highly dispersed Cu2+ ions as key active sites, which are facilely solubilized by NH3 at low temperatures, further promoting rapid dynamic switching between Cu2+ and Cu+ species. And the density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed the Cu2+ forms a unique interaction with the [010] crystal plane, leading to a lower energy barrier of the rate-determining step, resulting in extraordinary NOx conversion.

Low-Cost CuX Catalyst from Blast Furnace Slag Waste for Low-Temperature NH 3 -SCR: Nature of Cu Active Sites and Influence of SO 2 /H 2 O

Abstract:A series of Cu-exchanged zeolite NaX (derived from blast furnace slag) catalysts were synthesized by an ion-exchanged method. The low-temperature catalytic activity and SO2 or/and H2O resistance of the catalysts were studied as well. The results found that the Cu(N)X catalyst exhibited excellent low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity, whose NO conversion was nearly 100% at ca. 175 °C and remained stable, while the Cu(C)X catalyst showed the poorest catalytic performance. When SO2 and H2O was introduced, the NO conversion of the Cu(N)X catalyst declined from 100% to 60%, and it could recover to ca. 63% after cutting off SO2 and H2O. More isolated Cu2+ species and surface chemisorbed oxygen species on the Cu(N)X catalyst could provide more active sites for SCR reaction, and more surface oxygen vacancies accelerated the oxidation of absorbed NH3 species and NO species. Besides, the higher surface acidity and redox ability on the Cu(N)X catalyst promoted the SCR reaction performance. In addition, after the poisoning of SO2/H2O, the surface acidity decreased, redox ability became poor, and the Cu active species was less than that of the Cu(N)X catalyst, indicating that the Cu active sites were consumed during the reaction. Furthermore, it could also be found that the generated sulfate species occupied the main active sites and reduced the varieties of nitrate species and intermediates, thereby reducing the SCR activity of the catalyst.

Abstract:Low temperature SCR has been a promising technology due to the diverse load in coal-fired plants. However, ammonia escape problem could be more serious at low temperature on account of the condensation of NH4HSO4, resulting in deactivation of SCR catalyst and equipment corrosion. NH3-SCO technology could oxidize slip ammonia to harmless N2. Hence, it is important to develop a novel catalyst with high SCR and SCO efficiency at low temperature to remove NOx and slip NH3 and achieve the stable operation of SCR system. In this work, a combined sol-gel and impregnation method was used to synthetize different Aga−Mn/Ce-Ti (a = 2%, 5%, 8%) catalysts and applied in NOx and slip NH3 removal at low temperature. The activity measurement confirmed that Ag5-Mn/Ce-Ti catalyst exhibited an excellent low-temperature performance. At 150–300 °C, its NO conversion was 100%, NH3 conversion was above 95% and N2 selectivity was more than 90%. Moreover, considering the oxidation of slip ammonia, Ag5-Mn/Ce-Ti catalyst also exhibited above 90% NH3 conversion at 200–350 °C in the absence of NO. The catalytic performance could also be kept at a high level under the existence of SO2 and H2O. The characteristic results revealed that Ag and Mn modification could not apparently change the phase structure and could decrease the BET area to some extent. In addition, Ag-Mn/Ce-Ti catalyst possessed stronger and more surface acidic sites and contributed to better NH3 adsorption capacity. Besides, there was more chemisorbed oxygen on Ag-Mn/Ce-Ti catalyst resulting from the interactions among Ag, Mn and Ce oxides, which was responsible for its better redox property.

Abstract:Ag-based catalysts, especially Ag/Al2O3, show high NH3 oxidation activity in NH3-selective catalytic oxidation (NH3–SCO). However, the low N2 selectivity limits their further application. To improve N2 selectivity, herein, a series of Ag/Al2O3-X catalysts (X = calcination temperature) are designed by simple calcination. Only Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were observed on the Ag/Al2O3-400 catalyst, while highly dispersed Ag species (Ag HDs) were dominated on the Ag/Al2O3-800 catalyst. NH3–SCO results showed that Ag NPs/Al2O3 forms much N2O by-products, whereas Ag HDs/Al2O3 achieves >99% N2 selectivity over the Ag/Al2O3-800 catalyst at <200 °C. More importantly, various intermediates (NO3 ads, NH2 ads, NN–M, and NN–O–M) and their internal transformations were detected, and the reaction pathways for the formation of N2O and N2 are evidenced by in situ NH3-Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS). This study not only provides a convenient and effective approach to obtain excellent N2 selectivity in NH3–SCO but also affords a systematic insight into the reaction pathways over Ag/Al2O3 catalysts.

Abstract:SupportedPt catalysts suffer from low reaction selectivity (<65%at 100% conversion) in the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia(NH3-SCO) because of their intrinsic over-oxidation tendencies.Herein, a strategy based on facilitating byproduct NO (x) reduction to N-2 is demonstrated at CuO (x) /PtCu catalysts, aiming to tackle the lowselectivity challenge. This PtCu alloy sample with a CuO (x) -rich surface displays an N-2 selectivityof 95%, while its turnover frequencies are the highest among reportedsupported Pt-based catalysts. The enhanced reaction activities andN(2) selectivities are primarily attributed to the Pt-Cu delta+ dual-site synergies at the CuO (x) /PtCu interface, in which dual sites exhibit distinct NH3 adsorption, activation, and dehydrogenation behaviors. TheO(lat) assisted internal selective catalytic reduction mechanismat CuO (x) /PtCu with N2O2 (2-) as the central intermediates is proposed. Densityfunctional theory calculation and temperature-programmed surface reactionmeasurements show that the N-O bond in N2O2 (2-) tends to break simultaneously with the assistanceof O-v in CuO (x) followed by theeasy transition from N2O2 (2-) to N-2, which serve as the origin of the high selectivity.
Promotional Synergistic Effect of Cu and Nb Doping on a Novel Cu/Ti-Nb Ternary Oxide Catalyst for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3

Abstract:A series of Ti-Nb binary oxide were synthesized by co-precipitation as supports to prepare Cu/Ti-Nb mixed oxide catalysts through wetness impregnation. The novel catalyst 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx exhibited an excellent catalytic activity and N-2 selectivity with a broad operation temperature (250-425 degrees C) under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 177,000 h(-1) for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3. A series of analytical techniques including high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N-2-physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Laser Raman spectra (LRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) were used to investigate the correlations among catalyst structure, surface properties and catalytic performance. For the support Ti2NbOx, the specific surface area was larger than that of TiO2, promoting the high dispersion of the active component. Also, the surface acid sites were increased by addition of niobium oxide species and the redox capability of the support was enhanced by doping copper species. Moreover, the introduction of copper species effectively enhanced the catalytic performance within 225-400 degrees C. The copper species mainly existed as isolated Cu2+ and non-isolated Cu2+ and the isolated Cue(2+) ions played a significant role in the high NH3-SCR performance over 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx catalyst. Hydrothermal aging treatment experiment demonstrated that 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx catalyst had an excellent hydrothermal stability. In addition, water vapor or/and SO2 had a slightly reversible inhibition influence on the catalytic performance over 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx, indicating that it was a promising candidate for NH3-SCR catalyst in the future practical application. The reaction pathway over 0.8%Cu/Ti2NbOx catalyst followed both Eley-Rideal mechanism and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism at 225 degrees C. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
