Abstract:We report two novel small-molecule non-fullerene acceptors, IF-TN and IDT-TN, with indenofluorene (IF) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) as their respective central electron-rich cores and naphthyl-fused indanone (N) as the electron-withdrawing end-groups. By pairing these non-fullerene acceptors with a widely used polymer PBDB-T, the fabricated polymer solar cells based on PBDB-T: IDT-TN obtain a power conversion efficiency up to 5.89%, associated with a relatively high open-circuit voltage of 0.97 V and a remarkably low non-radiative open-circuit voltage loss of 0.23 V. These findings provide an effective approach for the rational molecular design of small-molecule acceptors with low non-radiative open-circuit voltage loss.

Abstract:Recently, acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type of small molecules based on indacenodithieno[3,2-b] thiophene (IDTT) or indacenodithiophene (IDT) as the electron-donating cores were very promising non-fullerene (NF) acceptors to overcome the energy levels and absorption drawbacks of the fullerene-based acceptors in polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, few attempts have been done to develop novel electron-donating cores to construct highly efficient A-D-A acceptors in PSCs. We design and prepare two novel non-fullerene small molecular acceptors (DTF-IC and DTC-IC) based on dithienocyclopentafluorene and dithienocyclopentacarbazole as the electron-donating cores sealed with 2-(3-oxo-indane-1-ylidene)-malononitrile as the electron-withdrawing groups. The two molecules exhibit relatively high lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels and strong absorption in the region from 550 to 740 nm. Relative to the molecule DTF-IC possessing dithienocyclopentafluorene core, the dithienocyclopentacarbazole based acceptor DTC-IC shows slightly red-shifted absorption spectrum, enhanced extinction coefficients,better crystallinity and improved electron mobility. The polymer solar cells based on these two NF acceptors exhibit power conversion efficiencies of 7% when blended with the narrow bandgap polymer poly({4,8-bis[(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-2-thienyl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl){3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl}) (PTB7-Th) in inverted solar cells. Abstract:Three new non-fullerene acceptors with the core of a fused nonacyclic unit, and the end-capping groups of 3-dicycanovinylindan-1-one are designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells. Those acceptor molecules bear four additional aliphatic side chains at the nonacyclic core, which endow them excellent solubility and crystallization-morphology tunability. Meanwhile, the effect of side chains’ size on the optical absorptions, electrochemical properties, and photovoltaic performance are carefully investigated. The results show that the bulk of side chains just slightly affects optical absorption and electronic energy levels, however, it significantly influences the molecular stacking and morphology separation, as well as the eventual device performance. When they are matched with the donor polymer poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1′,3′-di-2-thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′,5′-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T), the device based on the acceptor with octyl group can deliver the best PCE of 8.57%, which overwhelms those based on other two acceptor materials. This can be attributed to the preferable nanophase separation for their blend films, and high and balanced charge mobility. The results highlight the important role of backbone and side-chain tailoring in designing non-fullerene acceptors towards high-performance polymer solar cells.

Abstract:There has been a growing interest in the design and synthesis of non-fullerene acceptors for organic solar cells that may overcome the drawbacks of the traditional fullerene-based acceptors. Herein, two novel push-pull (acceptor-donor-acceptor) type small-molecule acceptors, that is, ITDI and CDTDI, with indenothiophene and cyclopentadithiophene as the core units and 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile (INCN) as the end-capping units, are designed and synthesized for non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). After device optimization, PSCs based on ITDI exhibit good device performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 8.00%, outperforming the CDTDI-based counterparts fabricated under identical condition (2.75% PCE). We further discuss the performance of these non-fullerene PSCs by correlating the energy level and carrier mobility with the core of non-fullerene acceptors. These results demonstrate that indenothiophene is a promising electron-donating core for high-performance non-fullerene small-molecule acceptors.

Abstract:The performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is commonly improved using additives or annealing treatment. However, these processes are accompanied by disadvantages, including poor reproducibility and stability. Herein, a molecular design strategy is proposed to obtain additive- and annealing-free PSCs. IDTOT2F containing two alkoxyl side chains at the central unit of the nonfullerene acceptor IDTT2F was developed. This molecular design results in excellent solubility in solutions, ordered molecular packing in films, slightly elevated energy levels, and a higher film absorption coefficient. Compared with its counterpart IDTT2F, its improved solubility provides an active layer with better morphology, its ordered molecular packing enhances the charge mobility in blend films, and its slightly elevated energy level furnishes a higher open-circuit voltage of devices. As a result, IDTOT2F-based devices display a maximum power conversion efficiency of 12.79%, which is one of the highest values reported for a PSC fabricated without any extra treatment.
A Rational Design and Synthesis of Cross-Conjugated Small Molecule Acceptors Approaching High-Performance Fullerene-Free Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Considering the combination of the advantages of both the acceptor-donor-acceptor and perylene diimide type acceptors, three new cross-conjugated small molecule non-fullerene acceptors were rationally designed and synthesized. Their thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit highly extended absorption spectra ranging from 300 to 700 nm as well as appropriate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels compared with those of the general acceptors based on perylene diimide. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells based on the resultant acceptors were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PTB7-Th:acceptor/PFN-Br/Ag configuration. Benefiting from efficient exciton dissociation, reduced bimolecular recombination, and enhanced and balanced electron mobility, the device-based PDIBDT-IT exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.06% with a high short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of 13.60 mA/cm(2), a fill factor (FF) of 60.45%, and an open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.74 V, which was higher than those of PDIBDT-RDN and PDIBDT-ITF. The underlying mechanism was carefully studied and discussed. The extended absorption of PDIBDT-IT contributes to its relatively high PCE; however, the performance will be potentially improved by ehnancing the electron mobility of these acceptors. Our results provide an efficient cross-conjugated approach and great flexibility in fine-tuning physicochemical properties, including absorption spectra and energy levels of the acceptors toward high-performance solar cells.

Abstract:Conjugated small molecular non-fullerene electron acceptors (NFA) are considered as one of the critical materials for achieving high performance and low cost of polymer solar cells, and received much attention in the last few years. However, most of the NFAs are based on large fused ic-aromatic core, which requires complicate synthesis efforts. In addition, the relatively weak light absorption limited to 800 nm of most the NAFs limits the energy harvesting capability of the solar cells. In this paper, we report an A-pi-D-pi-A type molecule cored with a cyclopentadithiophene unit, which can be easily synthesized in two steps from commercially available starting materials. This compound shows a broad absorption up to 900 nm in thin solid film, which is ascribed to the relatively high highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level as confirmed by cyclic voltammery and theoratical calculation. Application of the compound in polymer solar cells was also investigated both in binary and in ternary systems. The optimized power conversion efficiency (PCE) in binary solar cell with PTB7-Th as donor is 5.76% with an open circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.838 V, a short circuit current (J(SC)) of 14.81 mA/cm(2) and a fill factor (FF) of 46.4%. In the ternary solar cells which includes a second acceptor, PC71BM, the highest PCE achieved is 9.39% with a V-OC of 0.803 V, a J(SC) of 19.01 mA/cm (2), a FF of 61.6%, which is over 20% enhancement compared to the PTB7-Th:PC71BM system (PCE of 7.58%). This work develops a simple small molecule nonfullerene acceptor which can largely enhance the photo response in near infrared region to improve the performance of fullerene based organic solar cell.

Abstract:Two novel A-D-A type molecules IDT-2BM and IDTT-2BM with extended fused-ring indacenodithiophene (IDT) or indacenodithienothiophene (IDTT) units as cores and strong electron-withdrawing unit 2-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-ylmethylene)malononitrile (BM) as the end-capping group were synthesized and investigated as electron acceptors in solution-processed polymer solar cells (PSCs). IDT-2BM and IDTT-2BM exhibited strong and broad absorption from 300 to 800 nm, and appropriate LUMO (-3.8 eV) and HOMO (-5.5 to -5.6 eV) levels matching with the classical polymer donor PBDTTT-C-T. IDT-2BM and IDTT-2BM films exhibited intrinsic electron mobilities of about 3.7 x 10(-6) and 1.0 x 10(-5) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively. Fullerene-free PSCs employing PBDTTT-C-T as the donor and IDT-2BM or IDTT-2BM as the acceptor afforded power conversion efficiencies of 4.26% and 4.81%, respectively.

Abstract:A fused-ring electron acceptor based on indacenodithiophene was designed and synthesized. The nonfullerene acceptor shows strong absorption in 500-850 nm with extinction coefficient up to 1.4 x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1) and relatively high lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level (-3.55 eV). As an electron-cascade acceptor and strong absorption material; the new acceptor was incorporated into poly(3-hexylthiophene): [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric-acidmethyl-ester blend to fabricate ternary blend polymer solar cells. The introduction of the nonfullerene acceptor can not only broaden the light absorption of the active layer to the near-infrared region, but also increase the open circuit voltage due to the higher lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the nonfullerene acceptor relative to the fullerene acceptor. Ternary blend devices with 20% of the nonfullerene acceptor exhibited an average power conversion efficiency of 3.84%, higher than those of the binary blends using the fullerene acceptor (3.30%) or the nonfullerene acceptor (1.42%). Abstract:The past few years has witnessed rapid progresses in the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells based on non-fullerene acceptors. However, most high-performance non-fullerene acceptors are synthesized by using complicated ring-fused aromatics which have relatively high synthetic cost. In this work, we report on the design and synthesis of two small molecule acceptors (SSBR and SSBRC) by using a simple cyclopentadithiophene central core franked by 3-ethylrhodanine or 2-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-3-ethylrhodanine units with two benzothiadiazole bridges. The terminal electron-withdrawing groups have an important effect on physical, electronic and photovoltaic properties of the non-fullerene acceptors. Inverted polymer solar cells based on PTB7-Th:SSBRC showed an inferior PCE of 3.35%. In contrast, devices based on PTB7-Th:SSBR afforded an initial PCE of 7.82%, and an increased PCE of 8.16% after 88 days storage. Furthermore, the best performance device can retain about 98% of its initial PCE after more than 6 months storage demonstrating its superior stability.

Abstract:A new acceptor-donor-acceptor type small molecule acceptor, namely IDT-HN, has been developed, which consists of a newly developed 2-(3-oxo-2,3,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalen-1-ylidene)malononitrile as the peripheral electron-withdrawing group and indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']-dithiophene as the electron-donating core. Compared with the reference molecule (IDT-IC) that bears phenyl-fused indanone as the end groups, IDT-HN exhibited an elevated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. By utilizing IDT-HN as the electron acceptor and a wide bandgap conjugated polymer, PBDB-T, as the electron donor, optimized devices exhibited an impressively high power conversion efficiency of up to 10.22% with simultaneously improved open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and fill factor. The improved photovoltaic performance can be attributed to the widened and intensified absorption spectra, improved electron mobility, more ordered pi-pi packing structure, and the symmetric carrier transport mobility of the IDT-HN-based blend in comparison to those obtained from devices based on the reference molecule IDT-IC. These results indicate that the cyclic alkyl moiety incorporated into the peripheral groups plays a critical role in improving the performance of the corresponding solar cell devices. In addition, the power conversion efficiency of the devices remains at 91% of its optimum performance with a film thickness of 250 nm, indicating its great potential for future practical application.

Abstract:Two novel non-fullerene acceptors, SN6IC and SN6IC-4F, based on an S,N-heteroacene backbone were designed and synthesized. The cyclopentadiene fragments of commonly used acceptors were replaced with pyrrole rings to improve the electron-donating ability to increase the energy levels of the molecules. Both acceptors match well with the absorption and energy levels of the polymer donor PBDB-T, and PBDB-T:SN6IC-4F-based solar cells showed an excellent power conversion efficiency of 13.2%, with a relatively small V-OC loss of 0.54 eV. This study proves that the introduction of a nitrogen atom to replace the sp(3)-hybridized carbon in the fused ring is very effective for making highly efficient NFAs to further improve the performance of organic solar cells.

Abstract:Small-molecule "nonfullerene" acceptors are promising alternatives to fullerene (PC61/71BM) derivatives often used in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells; yet, the efficiency limiting processes and their dependence on the acceptor structure are not clearly understood. Here, we investigate the impact of the acceptor core structure (cyclopenta-[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene (CDT) versus indacenodithiophene (IDTT)) of malononitrile (BM)-terminated acceptors, namely CDTBM and IDTTBM, on the photophysical characteristics of BHJ solar cells. Using PCE10 as donor polymer, the IDTT-based acceptor achieves Power conversion efficiencies (8.4%) that are higher than those of the,CDT-based acceptor (5.6%) because of a concurrent increase in short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage. Using (ultra)fast transient spectroscopy we demonstrate that reduced geminate recombination in PCE10:IDTTBM blends is the reason for the difference in short-circuit currents. External quantum efficiency measurements indicate that the higher energy of interfacial charge-transfer states observed for the IDTT-based acceptor blends is the origin of the higher open-circuit voltage.

Abstract:Three new asymmetric acceptor-donor-acceptor structured molecules are designed and synthesized by incorporating indenothiophene as the central core. Their bandgaps and energy levels can be easily tuned by varying the electron withdrawing ability of the terminal groups such as dicyanovinyl, 3-ethylrhodanine, and 2-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-3-ethyl-rhodanine. Inverted polymer solar cells using these molecules as acceptors and PTB7-Th as a donor material afford a highest power conversion efficiency of 7.49% with a high open circuit voltage of 1.02 V as well as a low energy loss of 0.59 eV.

Abstract:A 7.3% efficiency non-fullerene polymer solar cell is realized by combining a large-bandgap polymer PffT2-FTAZ-2DT with a small-bandgap acceptor IEIC. The complementary absorption of donor polymer and small-molecule acceptor is responsible for the high-performance of the solar-cell device. This work provides important guidance to improve the performance of non-fullerene polymer solar cells.
Enhancing the Performance of Non-Fullerene Solar Cells with Polymer Acceptors Containing Large-Sized Aromatic Units

Abstract:In this work, we develop four diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymer acceptors for application in polymer-polymer solar cells. The polymer acceptors contain different-sized aromatic units, from small thiophene to benzodithiophene and large alkylthio-benzodithiophene units. Although the polymer acceptor with large-sized groups shows small LUMO offset and low energy loss when blended with the donor polymer PTB7-Th, the corresponding solar cells can achieve a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.1% due to high photocurrent. In contrast, the polymer acceptor with small thiophene units only provides a low PCE of 0.14% in solar cells. These results indicate that polymer acceptors with large-sized aromatic units can be potentially used into high performance non-fullerene solar cells.

Abstract:<p>In this work, we design and synthesize three asymmetric acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type nonfullerene acceptors (ITOTC, ITUTC and ITUIC) using a novel indenothienothiophene-based unfused core together with two different electron-deficient terminal units (2-(6-oxo-5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta[<em>c</em>]thiophen-4-ylidene)malononitrile for ITOTC and ITUTC, and 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile for ITUIC). Alkyl chains with different lengths are incorporated in the indenothienothiophene-based unfused core to ensure the good solubility of the resulting nonfullerene acceptors (n-octyl for ITOTC, n-undecyl for ITUTC and ITUIC), and to tune their charge transporting properties as well. Photovoltaic properties of these nonfullerene acceptors are investigated by using a typical wide band-gap polymer of PBDB-T as the donor material. The best-performance polymer solar cell based on ITOTC: PBDB-T with annealing shows a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.35%, in comparison with the counterpart based on ITUTC:PBDB-T which shows a PCE of 7.68%. However, 7.68% PCE is higher than that of the best-performance PSC based on ITUIC:PBDB-T (6.45% PCE). These results suggest that both side-chains and electron-deficient terminal groups can be optimized to improve the photovoltaic properties of A-D-A type nonfullerene acceptors based on the indenothienothiophene-based unfused core.</p>
