Abstract:A novel system structure of resonant fiber optical gyroscope using a parallel double hollow-core photonic crystal fiber ring resonator is proposed, which employs the double closed loop and reciprocal modulation–demodulation technique to solve the problem of the length mismatch between rings. This structure can suppress the residual amplitude modulation noise and laser frequency noise, essentially eliminating the influence of the Rayleigh backscattering noise and dramatically reduce the Kerr-effect-induced drift by three orders of magnitude. Thanks to its excellent noise suppression effect, the sensitivity of this novel system can approach the shot-noise-limited theoretical value of 8.94 × 10−7 rad/s assuming the length of the fiber ring resonator is 10 m.

Abstract:A novel hybrid integrated scheme is proposed for a high-performance resonant micro-optic gyro (RMOG), which requires a low-loss micro-ring resonator for mass production. A new record for the RMOG is established experimentally with a short fiber ring resonator and an integrated signal detecting and processing circuit. The finesse of the short fiber ring resonator with a length of 60 cm and a diameter of 4.77 cm is as high as 202, and the theoretical sensitivity of the RMOG is better than 0.3°/h assuming the average optical intensity at the photodetector is 1 mW. The 60 cm long spliceless micro-ring resonator is experimentally proved to be sufficient for a tactical-grade RMOG. An angle random walk coefficient of 0.64°/√h and a typical bias stability below 9.6°/h for the integration time of 50 s are successfully demonstrated using an innovative open-loop approach for an operation time of 1600 s.

Abstract:We demonstrate all fiber Fabry-Perot resonators (F-P resonators) based on Sagnac loop mirrors assembled with tellurite microfibers. As-assembled F-P resonators, with dimensions of hundreds of micrometers, show clear resonant responses with typical quality factor of about 5700, free spectral range of about 1 nm, and a maximum extinction ratio of 18 dB. The reflectivity of the loop mirror and the effective cavity length of the F-P resonator can be tuned by micromanipulation under an optical microscope. F-P resonators demonstrated here show advantages of small size, good resonance, easy fabrication, tunability, and easy integration with fiber systems. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We fabricate a microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector, and control the light velocity using the device. In this structure, light is reflected by the Sagnac loop and passes through the ring resonator twice. Thus, it possesses doubled transmission and group delay comparing with the microfiber ring resonator without the Sagnac loop. We experimentally demonstrate pulse advancement in an under-coupled microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector. In the experiment, a maximum of similar to 25 ps pulse advancement was achieved for a 5-Gb/s RZ signal. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A high-finesse silica waveguide ring resonator (WRR) is designed and a new record is demonstrated experimentally. The finesse and the resonant depth of the silica WRR with a length of 7.9 cm and a diameter of 2.5 cm are 196.7 and 98%, respectively. In addition, the silica WRR is pigtailed with single-polarization fiber to improve the polarization extinction ratio thus to reduce the polarization error. With the application of this high-finesse and high polarization extinction ratio WRR to the resonant micro-optic gyroscope (RMOG), a bias stability of 0.004°/s was observed over a one-hour timeframe.

Abstract:A resonant micro optic gyro (RMOG) is a promising candidate for applications requiring small, light and robust gyros. A high-performance RMOG requires a low-loss micro-ring resonator, and thus a resonator having a high finesse. We experimentally create a new record for high-finesse micro-ring resonators by using 30-cm long low-loss fiber coils laid into the V-groove on a silicon substrate. Both the simulation and experimental results indicate that the 30-cm long micro-ring resonator is sufficient to build a tactical-grade RMOG. Experimentally, a bias stability of 0.046 degrees/s in 1800 s with an integration time of 1 s is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose a simple technique to form miniature optical circuits using microfibers embedded into a low refractive index matrix. As an example we demonstrate a silica microfiber knot resonator embedded in a fluoroacrylate polymer. Fabrication issues and initial experimental results are reported. We also present simulations aimed at understanding the current limitations to the Q-factor and the role of the embedding polymer refractive index on the Q-factor of future resonators. It is anticipated that using commercially available polymers high Q-factor resonators with radii as small as 100 micrometers can be made by this technique.

Abstract:In this article, we proposed a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF) ring resonator based on a spatial coupling method, and the component is only 22 × 30 × 6 mm 3 . When using a 7-core photonic crystal fiber with a mode field diameter of 10um, a ring resonator with the measured finesse of 18 can be built, indicating that the coupling loss is as low as 0.41 dB. Compact and low-loss closed resonator is accomplished using a highly integrated free space silicon optical bench manufactured by deep silicon etching and tiny optical lens package technology, which promotes the practicality of the HCPCF gyro. In addition, two important factors affecting the spatial optical coupling efficiency, the lens type and the fiber mode field size, are investigated in this article. The obtained results are instructive for all spatial optical coupling systems.

Abstract:Based on low-loss fusion splicing of microfibers using a CO laser, we demonstrate free-standing microfiber closed-loop resonators. Loaded Q-factors of 110 500 with a finesse of 15.3 are obtained around 1.5-mu m wavelength in a 2.4-mm-diameter closed-loop resonator suspended in air. The possibility of tuning resonant responses by changing the coupling efficiency is also demonstrated.

Abstract:A 1.15-mm-diameter close-loop ring resonator is fabricated by fusion splicing a 4-µm-diameter microfiber. When immersed in a 6 wt.% glycerin aqueous solution, the fusion spliced microfiber ring resonator exhibits good resonance at 1.6-µm-wavelength with a Q-factor of about 23000 and an extinction of 15 dB.

Abstract:This paper provides a scheme for realizing high-accuracy, low-cost resonant fiber optical gyroscopes (RFOGs) with single-mode (SM) fibers. The temperature-related polarization noise, which deteriorates the bias stability of the RFOG, has been suppressed thanks to a much longer birefringence beat length of SM fibers. It is also helpful to improve the theoretical sensitivity of the RFOG because of the very low loss of the SM fiber components. A transmissive 39-m-long SM fiber ring resonator (FRR) is fabricated. The measured finesse is 58.7, and its total loss is calculated to be less than 0.3 dB. Using this SM-FRR as the sensing element, an RFOG is then set up that achieves an angular random walk of 0.0039∘/√h and a bias stability of 0.05°/h. The experimental results show that the SM-FRR scheme would be a good candidate for producing high-accuracy and low-cost RFOGs.

Abstract:The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with better thermal stability and polarization-maintaining performance is applied to the resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). A hybrid fiber ring resonator is fabricated using the conventional polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and PCF with close mode field diameters (MFDs) to reduce MFD-mismatch-induced splicing loss. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent birefringence coefficients of the PMF and the PCF are measured to differ almost four times in absolute value and be opposite in sign. The polarization stability of the hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator is improved by a factor of 7 compared with the PMF ring resonator with the same length of PMF. The RFOG equipped with this hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator achieves a bias stability of 1.67°/h.

Abstract:The resonant micro-optic gyroscope (RMOG) is an attractive candidate for inertial rotation sensors requiring small, light and robust gyros. A high-performance RMOG needs a low-loss and high finesse waveguide-type ring resonator (WRR). Two general configurations of the WRRs which are made of Ge-doped silica core waveguides based on plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition including the reflector-type and the transmitter-type are introduced. The reflector-type WRR with a length of 7.9 cm and a diameter of 2.5 cm has a finesse of 196.7 and a resonant depth of 98%. In addition, it's pigtailed with single-polarization fiber to reduce the polarization error. The transmitter-type WRR with a length of 15.9 cm and a diameter of 5.06 cm has a finesse of 128 and a resonant depth of 95%. The waveguide loss low as 0.007 dB/cm has been measured, leading to the shot-noise limited sensitivity of 1.0 degrees/h when the average optical power at the input of the photodetector is 1 mW and the detecting bandwidth is 1 Hz.

Abstract:A fiber ring resonator is the key element in a resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). Both reflection and loss characteristics can severely decrease the accuracy of the RFOG. This paper first implements optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) to measure the reflection and loss coefficients of the hybrid air-core photonic-bandgap fiber (PBF) ring resonator. Compared with the traditional measurement method of the resonant curve, OFDR can clearly distinguish the two junctions between the air-core PBF and the solid-core fiber. The measured reflection coefficients at the two splicing points are 1.77% and 2.65%, respectively. The excess losses are 2.28 dB and 3.22 dB, respectively. Thus, the measurement of the junctions in the fiber ring resonator is realized. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report fusion splicing nonsilica soft glass microfibers by using single pulses from a CO(2) laser. Splice loss of a 2-mu m-diameter phosphate glass microfiber is around 0.2 dB. By fusion splicing phosphate glass microfibers into closed-loop rings, we demonstrate a microfiber resonator with a Q-factor of about 25 000 and a 1.5-mu m-wavelength microring laser with a linewidth of about 0.05 nm. Our results suggest a potential approach to fabricating robust and versatile photonic components or devices out of soft glass microfibers that are excellent hosts for a variety of functional dopants.

Abstract:By using a white light interferometer to monitor the angular misalignment at a splicing point between a polarization-maintaining fiber and a single polarization fiber, a low loss hybrid single polarization fiber ring resonator with a round-trip loss of 0.98dB is fabricated. The misaligned angle at each splicing point is reduced from 10 to 1 degrees, and the average splice loss is reduced by approximately 0.147dB.
