Abstract:MnO-Co composite was employed to modify a Ni-Sm0.2Ce0.8O2−x anode. The electrochemical performance of the MnO-Co modified anode was evaluated on an anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell in dry hydrogen and dry methane, separately. The modified anode exhibited much higher peak power density in H2 compared with the original anode at the same condition. For example, the peak power density by the modified anode was 1756mWcm−2 at 700°C, compared with 1322mWcm−2 by the original anode at the same temperature. The higher peak power density of modified anode was attributed to its much lower polarization resistance and relatively higher porosity. However, it showed a worse stability than the unmodified anode in dry methane at 650°C due to severer carbon deposition.

Abstract:Coking on Ni surfaces limits the direct application of methane-based fuels in SOFCs with Ni-cermet anodes. Loading an anodic catalytic layer with a high catalytic activity for CH4 conversion can effectively protect the Ni-based anode from coking and increase the cell durability. In this work, a Ni-Fe alloy composite catalyst was prepared by reducing perovskite La0.7Sr0.3Fe0.8Ni0.2O3-delta (LSFN) and then evaluating its catalytic activity in the partial oxidation of CH4. The catalyst was applied on a conventional Ni-8 mol.% Y-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) anode for methane SOFCs using two methane-containing fuels (97% CH4-3% H2O and 30% CH4-70% air). The catalyst-modified cells showed much higher performances and durability than the conventional cell using a Ni-YSZ anode, indicating the potential application for direct-methane SOFCs. Infiltrated Ni 0.08 Co 0.02 CeO 2– x @Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 Catalysts for a Finger-Like Anode in Direct Methane-Fueled Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:Direct utilization of methane in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is greatly impeded by the grievous carbon deposition and the much depressed catalytic activity. In this work, a promising anode, taking finger-like porous YSZ as the anode substrate and impregnated Ni0.08Co0.02Ce0.9O2−δ@Ni0.8Co0.2O as the novel catalyst, is fabricated via the phase conversion-combined tape-casting technique. This anode shows commendable mechanical strength and excellent catalytic activity and stability toward the methane conversion reactions, which is attributed to the exsolved alloy nanoparticles and the active oxygen species on the reduced Ni0.08Co0.02Ce0.9O2−δ catalyst as well as the facilitated methane transport rooting in the special open-pore microstructure of the anode substrate. Strikingly, this button cell delivers an excellent peak power density of 730 mW cm–2 at 800 °C in 97% CH4/3% H2O fuel, only 9% lower than that in 97% H2/3% H2O. Abstract:The 70 wt.% Mn-doped CeO2 (MDC)-30 wt.% Scandia-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) composites are evaluated as anode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) in terms of chemical compatibility, thermal expansion coefficient, electrical conductivity, and fuel cell performance in H2 and CH4. The conductivity of MDC10 (10 mol.% Mn-doping), MDC20, and CeO2 are 4.12, 2.70, and 1.94 S cm−1 in H2 at 900 °C. With 10 mol.% Mn-doping, the fuel cells performances improve from 166 to 318 mW cm−2 in H2 at 900 °C. The cell with MDC10–ScSZ anode exhibits a better performance than the one with MDC20–ScSZ in CH4, the maximum power density increases from 179 to 262 mW cm−2. Electrochemical impedance spectra indicate that the Mn doping into CeO2 can reduce the ohmic and polarization resistance, thus leading to a higher performance. The results demonstrate the potential ability of MDC10–ScSZ composite to be used as SOFCs anode.
Coking-resistant Ce0.8Ni0.2O2-δ Internal Reforming Layer for Direct Methane Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:The development of direct methane solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is severely hindered by the deactivation of conventional Ni-based anodes due to carbon fouling. Here, a Ce0.8Ni0.2O2-delta (CNO) internal reforming layer is imposed on conventional Ni-Sm0.2Ce0.8O2-x (SDC) anodes for direct methane SOFCs. In CNO, there are two types of Ni species which are segregated NiO dispersed over the CNO and incorporated Ni2+ in the ceria lattice, respectively. The Ni2+ dopants are stable in wet hydrogen at 650 degrees C; however, the segregated NiO is reduced into Ni under the same conditions. With the doping of Ni2+ into the ceria lattice, surface oxygen vacancies are generated in CNO. For the stability testing in wet methane (similar to 3 mol% H-2O in methane) at 650 degrees C and 0.2 A cm(-2), the voltage of the conventional Ni-SDC anode decreases by 43.1% in approximately 26 h, whereas the CNO internal reforming layer operates stably for 40 h. In wet methane at 650 degrees C, with the addition of the CNO internal reforming layer, the polarization resistance of the Ni-SDC anode reduces by 22.3% from 0.0917 to 0.0712 U cm(2), and the maximum current density of it increases from 614 to 664mWcm(-2). Abstract:Carbon deposition on a Ni-based anode is troublesome for the direct power generation from methane-based fuels using solid oxide fuel cell. In this paper, a redox-stable double-perovskite Sr2MoFeO6-delta (SMFO) is applied as an independent on-cell reforming catalyst over a Ni-YSZ anode to improve coking resistance. The morphology, catalytic activity and electrochemical performance for wet methane/coal-bed gas (CBG) are investigated. A Ni-YSZ anode supported cell with SMFO generates a high power output of 1.77 W center dot cm(-2) and exhibits favorable stability operated on wet CH4 at 800 degrees C. Post-mortem micro-structural analyses of cells indicate the cell operated on CBG shows coking probably due to the heavy carbon compounds in CBG.

Abstract:A Cu/Ni/Sm-doped ceria (SDC) anode has been designed for direct utilization of dry methane in low-temperature anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells. The anode is prepared by the impregnation method, whereby a small amount of Cu is incorporated into the previously prepared Ni/SDC porous matrix. After reduction, Cu nanoparticles adhere to and are uniformly distributed on the surface of the Ni/SDC matrix. For the resulting Cu/Ni/SDC anode-supported cell, maximum power density of 317 mW cm−2 is achieved at 600 °C. The power density shows only ∼2% loss after 12-h operation. The results demonstrate that the Cu/Ni/SDC anode effectively suppresses carbon deposition by decreasing the Ni surface area available and the level of carbon monoxide disproportionation. This combination of effects results in very low-power density loss over the operating time.

Abstract:Current development of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is impeded by direct utilization of hydrocarbon fuels since SOFC anodes suffer from coking readily. We present an innovative design for enhancing the coking resistance of the conventional SOFC anode. A thin nano samaria doped ceria (SDC) catalyst layer has been deposited efficiently via infiltration on the wall surface of the Ni–yttria-stabilized zirconia (Ni–YSZ) anode internal gas diffusion channel (5–200μm in size) fabricated from freeze-drying tape-casting and vacuum-free infiltration. The efficiency for catalyst infiltration has been significantly improved by using hierarchically porous anode structure with open and straight channels. Single cells with nano SDC layer show very stable cell performance and a peak power density of 0.65Wcm−2 at 800°C using methane as the fuel. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis indicates for the first time that SDC layer can effectively prevent the formation or growth of nickel carbide (onset of coking), accounting for the excellent performance and structural stability of the Ni-based cermet anode.

Abstract:A series of Ni1-xCux/Sm-doped ceria (Ni1-xCux/SDC) anodes have been prepared through introducing a soluble pore former with the co-pressing and co-sintering process. Uniform hierarchical porous microstructures are formed in Ni0.9Cu0.1/SDC anode with interconnected large pores of 2-5 mu m and 100-300 nm small pores on the wall. The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) based on such anode exhibits exceptional electrochemical catalytic activity for dry CH4 oxidation and a maximum power density of 379 mW cm(-2) is acquired at 600 degrees C. Durability test results show only 2.4% power density drop is observed after 72 h operation under a constant cell voltage of 0.5 V. The results have demonstrated that the optimization of anode microstructures is an effective way to improve the performance and long-term stability of Ni1-xCux alloy-based anode-supported SOFC. Abstract:In this study, a new anode catalyst based on a NiFeCu alloy is investigated for use in direct-methane solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The influence of the conductive copper introduced into the anode catalyst layer on the performance of the SOFCs is systematically studied. The catalytic activity for partial oxidation of methane and coking resistance tests are proposed with various anode catalyst layer materials prepared using different methods, including glycine nitrate process (GNP), physical mixing (PM) and impregnation (IMP). The surface conductivity tests indicate that the conductivities of the NiFe–ZrO2/Cu (PM) and NiFe–ZrO2/Cu (IMP) catalysts are considerably greater than that of NiFe–ZrO2/Cu (GNP), which is consistent with the SEM results. Among the three preparation methods, the cell containing the NiFe–ZrO2/Cu (IMP) catalyst layer performs best on CH4–O2 fuel, especially under reduced temperatures, because the coking resistance should be considered in real fuel cell conditions. The cell containing the NiFe–ZrO2/Cu (IMP) catalyst layer also delivers an excellent operational stability using CH4–O2 fuel for 100 h without any signs of decay. In summary, this work provides new alternative anode catalytic materials to accelerate the commercialization of SOFC technology.

Abstract:Coking is a major issue with the traditional Ni-based anodes when directly oxidizing CH4 in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Dry reforming to convert CH4–CO2 into CO–H2 syngas before entering Ni-based anode may potentially be an effective and economical method to address the coking problem. Consequently, an on-cell reforming layer outside the Ni-based anode is expected to offer a unique solution for direct CH4–CO2 SOFCs without coking. In this study, Ni-GDC anode-supported cells with and without a Sr2Co0.4Fe1.2Mo0.4O6-δ (SCFM) layer outside the anode support have been fabricated and evaluated using either H2 or CH4–CO2 as fuel. Both types of cells show excellent electrochemical performance when H2 is used as fuel, and the SCFM layer has negligible impact on the cell performance. When CH4–CO2 is used as fuel, however, the electrochemical performance and durability of the cells with the SCFM layer are much better than those without the SCFM layer outside the Ni-GDC anode, indicating that the SCFM layer can efficiently perform dry reforming. This unique on-cell dry reforming design enables direct CH4–CO2 solid oxide fuel cells and offers a very promising route for energy storage and conversion.

Effectively Promoting Activity and Stability of a MnCo2O4-Based Cathode by In Situ Constructed Heterointerfaces for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:The development of multiphase composite electrocatalysts plays a key role in achieving the efficient and durable operation of intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). Herein, a self-assembled nanocomposite is developed as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst for IT-SOFCs through a coprecipitation method. The nanocomposite is composed of a doped (Mn0.6Mg0.4)0.8Sc0.2Co2O4 (MMSCO) spinel oxide (84 wt %), an orthorhombic perovskite phase (11.3 wt %, the spontaneous combination of PrO2 additives and spinel), and a minor Sc2O3 phase (4.7 wt %). The surface of the (Mn0.6Mg0.4)0.8Sc0.2Co2O4 phase is activated by the self-assembled nanocoating with many heterogeneous interfaces. Thence, the ORR kinetics is obviously accelerated and an area-specific resistance (ASR) of ∼0.11 Ω cm2 is obtained at 750 °C. Moreover, a single cell with the cathode shows a peak power density (PPD) of 1144.1 mW cm-2 at 750 °C, much higher than that of the cell with the MnCo2O4 cathode (456.2 mW cm-2). An enhanced stability of ∼120 h (0.8 A cm-2, 750 °C) is also achieved, related to the reduced thermal expansion coefficient (13.9 × 10-6 K-1). The improvement in ORR kinetics and stability can be attributed to the refinement of grains, the formation of heterointerfaces, and the enhancement of mechanical compatibility.
La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ Nanoparticles Modified Ni-based Anode for Direct Methane-Fueled SOFCs

Abstract:Direct utilization of methane in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is highly desirable, due to the merits of cost, simplicity and energy saving. However, the most commonly used Ni/YSZ anode suffers from carbon deposit issue under CH4. Here, a novel composite anode is developed to solve the problem, where La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) perovskite-type mixed ionic and electronic conductor (MIEC) is used to modified the anode by infiltration method. Simultaneously, LSCF/YSZ nano-structure cathode is obtained using infiltration method as well, which remarkably simplified the preparation process and is in favor of the practical applications. High electrochemical activity is demonstrated for this cell with a peak power density of 705 mWcm−2 under H2 and 486 mWcm-2 under CH4 at 800 °C. Durability test suggests the stability of cell in CH4 is dramatically improved, and it operates for 100h with little degradation under 0.3 Acm−2 and 750 °C. Results show that LSCF NPs, which are partially decomposed to (Sr,La)2(Co,Fe)O4 with CoFe alloy phase and disperse on the anode as a very thin layer in fuel atmosphere, dramatically enhance the coking resistance of anode. The work delivers an efficient way for direct CH4 fueled SOFC.

Abstract:The development of catalysts free of platinum-group metals and with both a high activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells is a grand challenge. Here we report an atomically dispersed Co and N co-doped carbon (Co–N–C) catalyst with a high catalytic oxygen reduction reaction activity comparable to that of a similarly synthesized Fe–N–C catalyst but with a four-time enhanced durability. The Co–N–C catalyst achieved a current density of 0.022 A cm−2 at 0.9 ViR-free (internal resistance-compensated voltage) and peak power density of 0.64 W cm−2 in 1.0 bar H2/O2 fuel cells, higher than that of non-iron platinum-group-metal-free catalysts reported in the literature. Importantly, we identified two main degradation mechanisms for metal (M)–N–C catalysts: catalyst oxidation by radicals and active-site demetallation. The enhanced durability of Co–N–C relative to Fe–N–C is attributed to the lower activity of Co ions for Fenton reactions that produce radicals from the main oxygen reduction reaction by-product, H2O2, and the significantly enhanced resistance to demetallation of Co–N–C.

Abstract:Due to the Fenton reaction, the presence of Fe and peroxide in electrodes generates free radicals causing serious degradation of the organic ionomer and the membrane. Pt-free and Fe-free cathode catalysts therefore are urgently needed for durable and inexpensive proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, a high-performance nitrogen-coordinated single Co atom catalyst is derived from Co-doped metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through a one-step thermal activation. Aberration-corrected electron microscopy combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy virtually verifies the CoN4 coordination at an atomic level in the catalysts. Through investigating effects of Co doping contents and thermal activation temperature, an atomically Co site dispersed catalyst with optimal chemical and structural properties has achieved respectable activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in challenging acidic media (e.g., half-wave potential of 0.80 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The performance is comparable to Fe-based catalysts and 60 mV lower than Pt/C -60 μg Pt cm-2 ). Fuel cell tests confirm that catalyst activity and stability can translate to high-performance cathodes in PEMFCs. The remarkably enhanced ORR performance is attributed to the presence of well-dispersed CoN4 active sites embedded in 3D porous MOF-derived carbon particles, omitting any inactive Co aggregates.

A Novel Method to Purposely Modify the Anode/Electrolyte Interface in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:A novel method is proposed to modify the Ni‐yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) anode/electrolyte interface with Ni‐Sm 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 2‐δ (SDC) or SDC composite particles. Scanning electron microscopy results confirm that nano‐sized NiO‐SDC particles are only loaded at the anode/electrolyte interface rather than the whole NiO‐YSZ support. With the addition of the Ni‐SDC composite, the peak power density of the Ni‐YSZ anode increases by 24.7% and 18.8% in wet hydrogen and methane at 750 °C, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results show that these improvements are attributed to the promotion of charge transfer and gas diffusion with the addition of the Ni‐SDC composite. Substituting the Ni‐SDC composite with pure SDC can further improve the electroactivity of the Ni‐YSZ anode. The peak power density of the single cell with the Ni‐YSZ/SDC anode rises by 41.7% and 43.4% compared with that of the Ni‐YSZ anode in wet hydrogen and methane at 750 °C, respectively.
Improved Durability of Co3O4 Particles Supported on SmMn2O5 for Methane Combustion

Abstract:Fuel cells operated with a reformate fuel such as methanol are promising power systems for portable electronic devices due to their high safety, high energy density and low pollutant emissions. However, several critical issues including methanol crossover effect, CO-tolerance electrode and efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst with low or non-platinum usage have to be addressed before the direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) become commercially available for industrial application. Here, we report a highly active and selective Mg−Co dual-site oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) single atom catalyst (SAC) with porous N-doped carbon as the substrate. The catalyst exhibits a commercial Pt/C-comparable half-wave potential of 0.806 V (versus the reversible hydrogen electrode) in acid media with good stability. Furthermore, practical DMFCs test achieves a peak power density of over 200 mW cm −2 that far exceeds that of commercial Pt/C counterpart (82 mW cm −2 ). Particularly, the Mg−Co DMFC system runs over 10 h with negligible current loss under 10 M concentration methanol work condition. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the N atom coordinated by Mg and Co atom exhibits an unconventional d -band-ditto localized p -band and can promote the dissociation of the key intermediate *OOH into *O and *OH, which accounts for the near unity selective 4e − ORR reaction pathway and enhanced ORR activity. In contrast, the N atom in SACCo remains inert in the absorption and desorption of *OOH and *OH. This local coordination environment regulation strategy around active sites may promote rational design of high-performance and durable fuel cell cathode electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cell is promising to efficiently convert the low-concentration coal mine methane (methane concentration c(CH4) <30%) from pollutant to clean energy. However, the low internal reforming performance and the coking at anode become the big challenges of SOFC using LC-CMM. Therefore, the Mo-doped NiTiO3 catalyst layer is fabricated over SOFC anode in this work. The catalyst can be in-situ reduced to nanoscale Ni and Mo-doped TiO2-δ composite catalyst with plentiful oxygen vacancies, thus adsorbing oxygen species to enhance CH4 internal reforming and remove carbon. It is demonstrated that the catalyst-modified SOFC using LC-CMM exhibits the much better electrochemical performance, anti-carbon effect and discharging stability than the un-modified SOFC. The modified SOFC also shows the good electrochemical and internal reforming performances under different LC-CMM with various methane concentration c(CH4) and oxygen concentration c(O2). The distribution of relaxation time (DRT) indicates that the catalyst can remove carbon and facilitates the adsorption, dissociation and transport of surface species through the enhanced oxygen-species mediated surface reactions. Besides, a 2D multi-physics coupling model is built to study the reforming-enhancing and anti-carbon mechanisms of the catalyst layer.
