Abstract:High-quality phase-pure MA1-x FAx PbI3 planar films (MA=methylammonium, FA=formamidinium) with extended absorption and enhanced thermal stability are difficult to deposit by regular simple solution chemistry approaches owing to crystallization competition between the easy-to-crystallize but unwanted δ-FAPbI3 /MAPbI3 and FAx MA1-x PbI3 requiring rigid crystallization conditions. Here A 2D-3D conversion to transform compact 2D mixed composition HMA1-x FAx PbI3 Cl perovskite precursor films into 3D MA1-x FAx PbI3 (x=0.1-0.9) perovskites is presented. The designed Cl/I and H/FA(MA) ion exchange reaction induced fast transformation of compact 2D perovskite film, helping to form the phase-pure and high quality MA1-x FAx PbI3 without δ-FAPbI3 and MAPbI3 impurity. In all, we successfully developed a facile one-step method to fabricate high quality phase-pure MA1-x FAx PbI3 (x=0.1-0.9) perovskite films by 2D-3D conversion of HMA1-x FAx PbI3 Cl perovskite. This 2D-3D conversion is a promising strategy for lead halide perovskite fabrication.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites with mixed organic cations and/or halides have attracted increasing attention due to their superior optoelectronic properties, which are tailorable for different applications. To obtain a deeper understanding of materials properties, single crystals are regarded as the best platform among various building blocks for fundamental study. Here, we synthesized a series of perovskite single crystals with mixed organic cations (APbI(3), A = CH3NH3+, MA(+); or CH(NH2)(2)(+), FA(+)) along the compositional space, and conducted a systematic investigation to correlate the carrier behavior with the organic cations. The single crystals were synthesized via inverse temperature crystallization assisted by hydroiodic acid, where the quality of the crystals could be judiciously controlled by the thermodynamic process. It is found that the substitution of 15% MA(+) in FAPbI(3) single crystals stabilizes the phase with the best charge transport characteristics. Both photodetector and J-V measurements suggested that FA(0.85)MA(0.15)PbI(3) single crystal exhibits suppressed ion migration compared with the counterpart FA(0.15)MA(0.85)PbI(3) single crystal. These results represent an important step to highlight the role of organic cations in hybrid perovskite materials, which will further benefit fundamental understanding of materials and device optimization.

Abstract:FA-Cs mixed-cation perovskite has been reported as a promising candidate for obtaining highly efficient and stable photovoltaic devices. Phenylethylamine iodide(PEAI) post-treatment is a widely used and effective method for surface passivation of FA-Cs perovskite layer in devices. However, it is still controversial whether the PEAI post-treatment would form two-dimensional(2D) perovskite PEA 2 PbI 4 capping layer or just result in PEA + terminated surface. Here in this work, the function of PEAI post-treatment on FA-Cs mixed-cation perovskite FA 1-x Cs x PbI 3 (x = 0.1–0.9) with varied Cs contents is elucidated. With increased Cs content, the FA-Cs perovskite shows higher resistance to the cation exchange between FA + and PEA + . This Cs-content-dependent cation exchange results in the different PEAI reaction preferences with FA-Cs mixed-cation perovskites. Furthermore, higher Cs content with stronger resistance to cation exchange reaction leads to a wider processing window for post-treatment and defect passivation,which is beneficial for the fabrication of large-scale photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Anion exchange is a convenient postsynthetic transformation method to adjust the composition and bandgap of semiconductors. However, it is still a challenge to achieve the desired halogen-variable perovskites due to rapid and uncontrollable reaction and difficulty to synthesize directly. Herein, a facile and gentle vapor/solid anion exchange strategy is reported to control the composition in situ and quantitatively for adjusting the properties of MAPbI3−xBrx (x = 0 to 3, MA = CH3NH3) films continuously. By controlling the reaction time, the films have a tunable bandgap from 1.58 to 2.25 eV and a continuously blue-shifted photoluminescence peak from 771.1 to 540.5 nm. The regularly shifted X-ray diffraction peaks reveal the successive variation in composition and crystal lattice with anion exchange and all the MAPbI3−xBrx films have a pure phase. More importantly, a universal empirical equation for in situ and quantitative composition regulation is extracted, which is supported by theoretical analysis and simulation on the anion exchange process. The anion exchange strategy and empirical equation are appropriate not only for perovskite but also for other related materials. This work may be valuable for further applications such as in situ quantitative reversible composition-tunable perovskites, solar cells, white LEDs, and lasers.

Optimizing the Light-Humidity Stability of Formamidinium Halide Perovskites Through Intermediate Phase and Strain Stress Adjustment

Abstract:Recently, the FA1-xCsxPbI3 system became popular due to its high performance and respectful thermal stability. However, the impact of Cs doping in the precursor on the stability of FA1-xCsxPbI3 perovskite films and devices remains unclear. Here, we systematically investigate the effects of trace amounts of Cs+ cations (<10%) on the intermediate phase, the crystallization and orientation, lattice strain and device stability of FA1-xCsxPbI3 perovskite. The results demonstrate that 5.0% Cs+ cations substitution for FA reduces the nucleation barrier of FAPbI3 and promotes the formation of the α-phase before heat treatment. And the Cs+ cations induce the oriented growth of FA1-xCsxPbI3 perovskite, eliminating unfavorable (110) facet and preventing the formation of unstable (100) facet at the top of perovskite. Meanwhile, 5.0% Cs+ cation substitution for FA effectively alleviates lattice strains in the perovskite structure, minimizing defects or traps recombination centers. Thus, the light and humidity stability of the FA0.950Cs0.050PbI3 device are substantially increased. The PCE of FA0.950Cs0.050PbI3 device remains ∼70% of the initial value after 768 hours under humidity exposure, and as a comparison, the FAPbI3 maintains only 54.5% of the initial value. The pure FAPbI3 device only maintains ∼25% of its initial value under 14 light-dark cycles, while the FA0.950Cs0.050PbI3 device maintains ∼75.1% of its initial value after 18 light-dark cycles. This work highlights the optimal threshold for Cs+ cation substitution for FA in FA1-xCsxPbI3 perovskite, contributing to the advancement of FA1-xCsxPbI3 high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:In this work, different from the commonly explored strategy of incorporating a smaller cation, MA(+) and Cs+ into FAPbI(3) lattice to improve efficiency and stability, it is revealed that the introduction of phenylethylammonium iodide (PEAI) into FAPbI(3) perovksite to form mixed cation FA(x)PEA(1-x)PbI(3) can effectively enhance both phase and ambient stability of FAPbI(3) as well as the resulting performance of the derived devices. From our experimental and theoretical calculation results, it is proposed that the larger PEA cation is capable of assembling on both the lattice surface and grain boundaries to form quais-3D perovskite structures. The surrounding of PEA(+) ions at the crystal grain boundaries not only can serve as molecular locks to tighten FAPbI(3) domains but also passivate the surface defects to improve both phase and moisture stablity. Consequently, a high-performance (PCE: 17.7%) and ambient stable FAPbI(3) solar cell could be developed.

Abstract:Engineering the chemical composition of organic and inorganic hybrid perovskite materials is one of the most feasible methods to boost the efficiency of perovskite solar cells with improved device stability. Among the diverse hybrid perovskite family of ABX(3), formamidinium (FA)-based mixed perovskite (e.g., FA(1-x)Cs(x)PbI(3)) possesses optimum bandgaps, superior optoelectronic property, as well as thermaland photostability, which is proven to be the most promising candidate for advanced solar cell. Here, FA(0.9)Cs(0.)1PbI(3)(Cl) is implemented as the light-harvesting layer in planar devices, whereas a low temperature, two-step solution deposition method is employed for the first time in this materials system. This paper comprehensively exploits the role of Cs+ in the FA(0.9)Cs(0.1)PbI(3)(Cl) perovskite that affects the precursor chemistry, film nucleation and grain growth, and defect property via pre-intercalation of CsI in the inorganic framework. In addition, the resultant FA(0.9)Cs(0.1)PbI(3)(Cl) films are demonstrated to exhibit an improved optoelectronic property with an elevated device power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.6%, as well as a stable phase with substantial enhancement in humidity and thermal stability, as compared to that of FAPbI(3)(Cl). The present method is able to be further extended to a more complicated (FA, MA, Cs)PbX3 material system by delivering a PCE of 19.8%.

Abstract:Anion exchange offers great flexibility and high precision in phase control, compositional engineering and optoelectronic property tuning. Different from previous successful anion exchange process in liquid solution, herein, we develop a vapor-phase anion-exchange strategy to realize the precise phase and bandgap control of large-scale inorganic perovskites by using gas injection cycle, produing some perovskites such as CsPbCl3 which has never been reported in thin film morphology. Ab-initio calculations also provide the insightful mechanism to understand the impact of anion exchange on tuning the electronic properties and optimizing the structural stability. Furthermore, because of precise control of specific atomic concentrations, intriguing tunable photoluminsecence is observed and photodetectors with tunable photoresponse edge from green to ultraviolet light can be realized accurately with an ultrahigh spectral resolution of 1 nm. Therefore, we offer a new, universal vapor-phase anion exchange method for inorganic perovskite with fine-tunable optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:Abstract The methylammonium (MA) and formamidinium (FA) are the most commonly used organic cations in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), whereas the impact of size and polarity differences between these two on the photovoltaic performances has been rarely revealed. Herein, we systematically investigated the phase distribution, optoelectronic and stability properties of FA-MA mixed perovskites. To identify the phase homogeneity, depth-dependent grazing-incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering measurements were employed, which demonstrates that the mixed cation perovskite possesses a FA-rich phase on the film surface and the bottom is comprised of MA-rich phase. Additionally, upon long-time illumination, a new PL peak is appeared at 778 nm, representing the generation of MA-rich phase induced by ion migration. It is worth noting that the phase splitting and inhomogeneous phase distribution would not bring any obvious detrimental effects to the photovoltaic performances and stability properties. Through judiciously tuning the cation proportion in pure-iodide perovskite, the additive-free PSCs achieve an efficiency as high as 20.7%. Furthermore, the PSCs with a broad range of FA/MA ratios show improved humidity/thermal/light stability despite the phase inhomogeneity. Therefore, the work shows that the MA and FA cations have a high compatibility in perovskite structure and the precise ratio control can further improve the performances.

Anion–π Interactions Suppress Phase Impurities in FAPbI3 Solar Cells

Abstract:Achieving both high efficiency and long-term stability is the key to the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs)(1,2). However, the diversity of perovskite (ABX(3)) compositions and phases makes it challenging to fabricate high-quality films(3-5). Perovskite formation relies on the reaction between AX and BX2, whereas most conventional methods for film-growth regulation are based solely on the interaction with the BX2 component. Herein, we demonstrate an alternative approach to modulate reaction kinetics by anion-p interaction between AX and hexafluorobenzene (HFB). Notably, these two approaches are independent but work together to establish 'dual-site regulation', which achieves a delicate control over the reaction between AX and BX2 without unwanted intermediates. The resultant formamidinium lead halides (FAPbI(3)) films exhibit fewer defects, redshifted absorption and high phase purity without detectable nanoscale d phase. Consequently, we achieved PSCs with power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 26.07% for a 0.08-cm(2) device (25.8% certified) and 24.63% for a 1-cm(2) device. The device also kept 94% of its initial PCE after maximum power point (MPP) tracking for 1,258 h under full-spectrum AM 1.5 G sunlight at 50 +/- 5 degrees C. This method expands the range of chemical interactions that occur in perovskite precursors by exploring anion-p interactions and highlights the importance of the AX component as a new and effective working site to improved photovoltaic devices with high quality and phase purity.

Abstract:Dissociation of organic molecules is one critical factor leading to degradation of perovskite solar cells. The much-improved thermal stability of formamidinium (FA) can significantly reduce molecular dissociation; however, FA-based perovskite suffers from high defect density, which affects efficiency and long-term stability. In this work, based on a precise ion-exchange reaction at the grain surface, we fabricate a Cs(0.15)FA(0.85)PbI(3)/Cs(x)FA(1-x)PbI(3) heterostructure with a Cs-rich Cs(x)FA(1-x)PbI(3) quasi-shell structure. The Cs-rich inorganic structure on the perovskite surface increases defect formation energy and reduces defect density, leading to a power conversion efficiency of 20.7%. The encapsulated device maintains 95% of its initial efficiency after 1,000 h of continuous operation, corresponding to a calculated lifetime approaching 2 years. The device can op. erate at 60 degrees C for 250 h and at 85 degrees C for over 3,000 min, which is one of the best operational stabilities for Cs(x)FA(1-x)PbI(3)-based devices.

Abstract:Here, a novel strategy is proposed targeting the volatility of A-site cations and the disordered arrangement of perovskite grains through employing Cs+ contained metal-organic frameworks In-aip (Cs) obtained by ion-exchange and crystalline transform. Interatomic forces between Cs-O atoms split the pore channels of the pristine In-aip, endowing In-aip (Cs) with multidimensional charge transport channels. In addition, the partially freed Cs+ in the interlayer compensates for the vacancy of A-site cations during the perovskite preparation process. The In-aip(Cs) modified perovskite films have a flat morphology, large grains and excellent optoelectronic properties. Benefiting from the high-quality perovskite films and faster charge extraction, the In-aip(Cs)-modified PSCs achieved a champion PCE of 23.03%, superior to the In-aip-modified (22.29%) and control device (21.13%). More importantly, the unencapsulated PSCs modified with In-aip(Cs) exhibited outstanding humidity and thermal stability. Over a period of almost 1000 h, the unencapsulated In-aip(Cs)-modified device retained 85% of its initial PCE after storing in a glove box at 85℃, and retained 87% of the primary PCE upon storage in ambient condition at 25℃ under a humidity of 40%.

Abstract:High-quality perovskite (PVK) films is essential for the fabrication of efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, unstable colloidal particles in PVK suspensions often hinder the formation of crystalline films with low defect densities. Herein, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a colloidal stabilizer into lead iodide (PbI2) is introduced colloidal solutions. EDTA forms chelated complexes with Pb2+, enhancing the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance between colloidal particles. This stabilizes the particles and inhibits disordered motion (Brownian motion) and excessive aggregation. As a result, PbI2 films with a uniform hole distribution are formed, providing ample pathways for subsequent PVK film growth and sufficient space. During the film formation process, the replacement of molecules by formamidinium iodide (FAI) and EDTA slows down crystallization, ultimately leading to PVK films with large grain sizes and low defect density. By using this approach, champion power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.05% for FA0.97Cs0.03PbI3 PSC, 11.08% for CsPbBr3 PSC, and 25.19% for FA0.945MA0.025Cs0.03Pb(I0.975Br0.025)3 PSC are achieved. Moreover, the EDTA-based FA0.97Cs0.03PbI3 device retains over 90% of its initial PCE after 1000 h at the maximum power point (MPP) under continuous illumination. Adding the colloidal stabilizer ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to lead iodide (PbI2) colloidal solution enhances the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance between particles, suppressing disordered motion and excessive aggregation. The substitution of EDTA with formamidinium iodide (FAI) delays perovskite crystallization, leading to champion efficiency of 24.05% for FA0.97Cs0.03PbI3 with excellent stability. Efficiencies of 25.19% for FA0.945MA0.025Cs0.03Pb(I0.975Br0.025)3 PSCs and 11.08% for CsPbBr3 PSCs also achieved. image

Abstract:Narrow bandgap cubic formamidine perovskite (α‐FAPbI3) has been widely studied for its potential to achieve record‐breaking efficiency. However, its high preparation difficulty caused by lattice instability has been criticized. A popular strategy for stabilizing the α‐FAPbI3 lattice is to replace intrinsic FA+ or I− with smaller ions of MA+, Cs+, Rb+, and Br−, whereas this generally leads to broadened optical bandgap and phase separation. Studies show that ions substitution‐free phase‐pure α‐FAPbI3 can achieve intrinsic phase stability. However, the challenging preparation of high‐quality films has hindered its further development. Here, we report a facile synthesis of high‐quality MA+, Cs+, Rb+, and Br−‐free phase‐pure α‐FAPbI3 perovskite film by a new solution modification strategy. This enables the activation of lead‐iodine (Pb‐I) frameworks by forming the coated Pb···O network, thus simultaneously promoting spontaneous homogeneous nucleation and rapid phase transition from δ to α phase. As a result, the efficient and stable phase‐pure α‐FAPbI3 PSC was obtained through a one‐step method without antisolvent treatment, with a record efficiency of 23.15% and excellent long‐term operating stability for 500 hours under continuous light stress. Surface Matrix‐Mediated Cation Exchange of Perovskite Quantum Dots for Efficient Solar Cells

Abstract:Cesium-formamidinium lead triiodide perovskite quantum dot (CsxFA1-xPbI3 PQD) is very promising for photovoltaic applications due to its good phase stability and outstanding optoelectronic properties. However, achieving the CsxFA1-xPbI3 PQDs with tunable compositions and robust surface matrix remains a challenge. Here, the surface matrix-mediated cation exchange of PQDs is proposed, in which a bi-functional molecule, tetrafluoroborate methylammonium (FABF4), is applied for the cation exchange and stabilizing surface matrix of PQDs. The results reveal that the FA+ of FABF4 molecules could exchange the Cs+ of CsPbI3 PQDs forming alloy CsxFA1-xPbI3 PQDs, allowing to tune the spectroscopies of PQDs. Meanwhile, the BF4- of FABF4 molecules can effectively stabilize the surface lattice and substantially diminish the surface vacancies of PQDs, improving the phase stability and optoelectronic properties of PQDs. Consequently, CsxFA1-xPbI3 PQD solar cells deliver an efficiency of up to 17.49%, which is the highest value of CsxFA1-xPbI3 PQD solar cells. This work provided important design principles for the composition and surface matrix regulation of PQDs for high-performance solar cells or other optoelectronic devices.
