Abstract:The Lewis acid-base reaction between PbI2 and solvent molecules is popular in fabricating PbI2 films by a two-step method for making perovskite solar cells. Here, we control the microstructure of PbI2 films through modulating the Lewis acid-base reaction by adding a small amount of N-methyl pyrrolidone into PbI2/DMF solution. PbI2 films with excellent crystallinity and full coverage are fabricated by spin-coating the mixed solution on the substrate, which leads to high quality perovskite layers with low recombination rate and high efficiency for carrier transfer. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the best perovskite solar cells increases from 13.3% to 17.5%.

Abstract:A two-step method is widely used to fabricate highly efficient perovskite solar cells. In a typical two-step method, CH3NH3PbI3 perovskites are fabricated from PbI2 films through an intercalation reaction between PbI2 and CH3NH3I, which usually have a rough surface and residual PbI2 due to a compact PbI2 structure. Here, we introduce some strong Lewis bases into PbI2/DMF solutions in the first step, which is helpful in controlling the morphology of PbI2 films with a mesoporous structure. The mesopores in the PbI2 films provide not only space for accommodating the volume expansion during the reaction between PbI2 and CH3NH3I, but also channels for CH3NH3I solution to diffuse into the PbI2 films, which helps eliminate the residual PbI2 and the dissolution and recrystallization process. As a result, smooth perovskite films without residual PbI2 are easily obtained. The power conversion efficiency, stability and reproducibility of the perovskite solar cells fabricated from the optimized mesoporous PbI2 films improved simultaneously due to the improvement in perovskite films. This work reveals the key roles of solvents (boiling point, Lewis basicity) in controlling the microstructure of the PbI2 films.

Abstract:Methylammonium lead trihalide perovskites are attracting intensive interest due to its high photovoltaic performance, low cost and one-step solution processability. Since the morphology of the perovskite thin films play the central role on the cell performance, a plethora of methods have been developed to fabricate uniform perovskite film. Herein, we demonstrate that an innovative approach by applying mixed lead salts (PbI2 + PbCl2) to facilitate reproducible fabrication of compact perovskite thin film. It is proposed that rapid reaction kinetics of PbI2 with MAI enables preformation of perovskite within the intermidiate film matrix, working as homogeneously located domains for squential growth of the PbCl2-derived perovskite. The as-prepared perovskite film exhibited a overall textured crystal morphology and superior compactness, which enables excellent light absorption and long-time preservation of photogenerated charge carriers and therefore exhibits 11% efficiency in planar-structured solar cells. The annealing testing shows the film also possesses very stable morphology upon long-time heating, indicative of the insensitivity of our new protocol to the preparation condition and also the promising thermal stability of its based solar cells. The simplicity of the one-step solution-processing and the high morphology stability of the as-prepared perovskite film endow this mixing lead salts method with feasibility of the large-scale fabrication.

Abstract:Intrinsically, detrimental defects accumulating at the surface and grain boundaries limit both the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. Small molecules and bulkier polymers with functional groups are utilized to passivate these ionic defects but usually suffer from volatility and precipitation issues, respectively. Here, starting from the addition of small monomers in the PbI2 precursor, a polymerization-assisted grain growth strategy is introduced in the sequential deposition method. With a polymerization process triggered during the PbI2 film annealing, the bulkier polymers formed will be adhered to the grain boundaries, retaining the previously established interactions with PbI2. After perovskite formation, the polymers anchored on the boundaries can effectively passivate undercoordinated lead ions and reduce the defect density. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.0% is obtained, together with a prolonged lifetime where 85.7% and 91.8% of the initial PCE remain after 504 h continuous illumination and 2208 h shelf storage, respectively.

Abstract:High-quality perovskite films can be fabricated from Lewis acid-base adducts through molecule exchange. Substantial work is needed to fully understand the formation mechanism of the perovskite films, which helps to further improve their quality. Here, we study the formation of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite films by introducing some dimethylacetamide into the PbI2/N,N-dimethylformamide solution. We reveal that there are three key processes during the formation of perovskite films through the Lewis acid-base adduct approach: molecule intercalation of solvent into the PbI2 lattice, molecule exchange between the solvent and CH3NH3I, and dissolution-recrystallization of the perovskite grains during annealing. The Lewis base solvents play multiple functions in the above processes. The properties of the solvent, including Lewis basicity and boiling point, play key roles in forming smooth perovskite films with large grains. We also provide some rules for choosing Lewis base additives to prepare high-quality perovskite films through the Lewis adduct approach. © 2017 American Chemical Society.

Abstract:<p>The Lewis acid–base adduct approach has been widely used to form high‐crystalline perovskite films, but the complicated crystallization pathway and underlying film formation mechanism are still ambiguous. Here, the detailed crystallization process of perovskites manipulated by Lewis base additives has been revealed by in situ X‐ray scattering measurements. Through monitoring the film formation process, two distinct crystal growth stages have been definitely recognized: i) an intermediate phase‐dominated stage; and ii) a phase transformation stage from intermediates to crystalline perovskite phase. Incorporating Lewis base additives significantly prolongs the duration of stage 1 and induces a postponed phase transformation pathway, which could be responsible for retardant crystallization kinetics. Based on a series of experimental results and theoretical calculations, it is indicated that the manipulation of perovskite crystallization pathway is a result of the modulated molecular interactions between Lewis base additives and solution precursors. Owing to the retardant crystallization kinetics, enhanced‐quality perovskite films with reduced defect density and improved optoelectronic properties, as well as optimized photovoltaic performance have been demonstrated. This work provides in‐depth understanding with respect to perovskite crystallization pathway modulated by Lewis base additives and perceptive guidelines for precise regulation of crystallization kinetics of perovskite film toward high performance.</p>

Abstract:High-quality perovskite films with large grains and long carrier lifetime are crucial for efficient solar cells. It is a simple and effective way to increase the perovskite grain size by adding some additives in the precursor solution. Here, we use a low toxicity and low-volatility organic compound of 1-ethyl-2-pyrrolidone (NEP) as an additive in the PbI2(PbBr2)/dimethylformamide precursor solution to form a Lewis adduct of PbI2 center dot NEP, which facilitate forming perovskite intermediate embedded with NEP molecules. The residual NEP molecules are kept in the narrow space between the intermediate film and substrate during annealing by using a closed-steam annealing method, which prolong the dissolution-recrystallization process. With assistance of the residual NEP, high-quality perovskite films with smooth surface, PbI2 free, high crystallinity, large columnar grains, and long carrier lifetime are fabricated. Correspondingly, the power conversion efficiency of the best perovskite solar cells is enhanced significantly from 10.8% to 17.0%.

Abstract:Fully inorganic perovskite cesium lead triiodide (CsPbI3) has garnered much attention from researcher for photovoltaic application because of its excellent thermal stability compared with the inorganic‐organic hybrid counterparts, along with the potential to serve as the top cell in tandem devices with silicon solar cell. However, the active α‐phase cubic CsPbI3 spontaneously tends to transform into the non‐perovskite δ‐CsPbI3 when subjected to ambient condition. This work proposes an effective method to fabricate high‐quality and stable α‐phase cubic CsPbI3 films via phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5) additive, in which the PCl5 acts as colloidal binder for modulation crystallization dynamics of perovskites, resulting in high‐quality film and a significantly suppressed phase transition. Finally, highly stable CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells can be achieved with a power conversion efficiency up to 17.85%, and long‐term stability in N2 filled glove box.

Abstract:Inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 is a material used for fabricating highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells. In this work, a two-step infiltration-spinning method is proposed to obtain CsPbBr3 films with pure phase. Phase transformations between CsPb2Br5, CsPbBr3 and Cs4PbBr6 are investigated by controlling the contact time between the CsBr solution and the PbBr2 substrate. CsPbBr3 films with large grain sizes are obtained after high temperature post-treatment. The CsPbBr3-based solar cells show a high efficiency (approximately 7%) with a short-circuit current density of 6.68 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 1.47 V and a fill factor of 70.9% under standard solar illumination.
Modulation of Nucleation and Crystallization in PbI2 Films Promoting Preferential Perovskite Orientation Growth for Efficient Solar Cells

Abstract:Formamidinium (FA)-rich lead iodide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are gaining popularity because of their excellent photovoltaic performance. Nevertheless, the FA-rich perovskites processed by a two-step sequential deposition method usually possess many non-radiative recombination sites, undesired crystal orientations, and too much excess lead iodide (PbI2) that can seriously deteriorate device performance. Here, we modulate the nucleation and crystallization of the PbI2 films by introducing pentafluoroanilinium trifluoromethanesulfonate (PFAT) into PbI2 precursor solutions. Such modulatory PbI2 films as porous templates allow the growth of perovskites with a preferential orientation, enlarged grains, reduced defects, and decreased PbI2 residues, owing to the reduced Gibbs free energy of PbI2 and the acceleration of perovskite formation. Ultimately, we derive FA-rich lead iodide PSCs with an impressive power conversion efficiency of 24.52%, which is among the highest values of two-step sequential deposition-processed PSCs. Furthermore, the unencapsulated device maintains ~90% of its initial efficiency after 500 hours of maximum power point loading under constant light irradiation at ~55°C in an N2 atmosphere. This study presents an effective way to improve the crystalline quality of perovskites by synchronously pre-modulating the morphology, nucleation, and crystallization of PbI2 precursor films.

Antisolvent‐Free Heterogenous Nucleation Enabled by Employing 4‐Tert‐Butyl Pyridine Additive and Two‐Step Annealing for Efficient CsPbI2Br Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:High quality CsPbI2Br film is achieved though crystallization regulation by introducing a metastable lewis acid‐base adduct of PbX2‐TBP. Preferential decomposition of such adducts at low temperature annealing leads to formation of perovskite seeds, followed by crystal growth assisted by PbX2‐DMSO. PSCs constructed with the optimized CsPbI2Br film demonstrate a remarkable PCE of 16.5%, with an impressive VOC reaching 1.3 V. All inorganic perovskite based on CsPbI2Br has attracted significant attention due to its relatively thermal stable structure compare to its hybrid counterparts. With a wide bandgap of 1.9 eV and excellent light absorption capability, it has been extensively explored for applications in indoor photovoltaics and as a front absorber in tandem devices. However, the uncontrollable crystallization process during solvent evaporation and thermal annealing leads to both macroscopic defects like cracks and microscopic defects such as voids. In this study, a metastable adduct with lead (II) halides by incorporating 4‐tert‐butyl pyridine as a volatile Lewis base monodentate ligand in the precursor solution is formed. The strategic preferential decomposition of the adduct during the early‐stage low‐temperature annealing facilitated the desorption of lead (II) halides, inducing antisolvent‐free heterogenous nucleation. This, in turn, promoted crystal growth during subsequent high‐temperature annealing, resulting in dense films with low defect density. As a result, a maximum open‐circuit voltage of 1.30 V is achieved with the champion power conversion efficiency of 16.5% in CsPbI2Br‐based perovskite solar cell. The work reveals a new mechanism of using Lewis acid‐base adduct to obtain high quality perovskite films other than hindering crystallization in traditional way.

Abstract:The fast-growing procedure (FGP) provides a simple, high-yield and lead (Pb)-release free method to prepare perovskite films. In the FGP, the ultra-dilute perovskite precursor solution is drop-cast onto a hot (~240°C) substrate, where a perovskite film grows immediately accompanied by the rapid evaporation of the host solvent. In this process, all the raw materials in the precursor solution are deposited into the final perovskite film. The potential pollution caused by Pb can be significantly reduced. Properties of the FGP-processed perovskite films can be modulated by the precursor composition. While CH3NH3Cl (MACl) affects the crystallization process and leads to full surface coverage, CH(NH2)2I (FAI) enhances the thermal stability of the film. Based on the optimized precursor composition of PbI2·(1−x)FAI·xMACl, x=0.75, FGP-processed planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells exhibit power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding 15% with suppressed hysteresis and excellent reproducibility.

Abstract:The PF6− and N‐propyl‐methyl piperidinium (NPMP+) within the CsPbTh3 perovskite film form Lewis acid–base adducts to effectively passivate iodide vacancy defects, regulate crystal growth, and finally uniformly improve grain quality and decrease the trap density. This combinational strategy enables the CsPbTh3 perovskite solar cells to achieve high photovoltaic performance and operational stability. All‐inorganic cesium‐lead‐iodide (CsPbI3Br3−x (2 < x < 3)) perovskite presents preeminent photovoltaic performance and chemical stability. Unfortunately, this kind of material suffers from phase transition to a nonperovskite phase under oxidative chemical stresses. Herein, the introduction of a low concentration of Lewis acid–base adducts (LABAs) is reported to synergistically reduce defect density, optimize interfacial energy alignment, and improve device stability of CsPbI2.75Br0.24Cl0.01 (CsPbTh3) solar cells. Both theoretical simulations and experimental measurements reveal that the noncoordinating anions, PF6−, as a Lewis base can more effectively bind with undercoordinated Pb2+ to passivate iodide vacancy defects than the BF4− and absorbed I−, and thus the point defects are well suppressed. In addition, N‐propyl‐methyl piperidinium (NPMP+) is selected to assemble with PF6− in CsPbTh3 film. The NPMP+ can regulate the crystal growth and finally homogenize the grain size and decrease the trap density. Consequently, the LABAs strategy can improve the power conversion efficiency of CsPbTh3 solar cells to 19.02% under 1‐sun illumination (100 mW cm−2). Fortunately, the NPMP+ and PF6−‐treated CsPbTh3 film shows great phase stability after storage in ambient air for 250 days, and the power conversion efficiency of corresponding solar cells is almost 76% of the initial value after 60 days aging under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Addition of lead chloride (PbCl2) improves the crystallization kinetics of perovskites by suppressing the formation of δ-phase during large-area perovskite film fabrication. However, this addition results in formation and accumulation of lead iodide (PbI2) platelet atop the film, which adversely affects carrier transport. To eliminate the negative effect of PbI2 accumulation and simultaneously obtain a dense, mirror-like perovskite film, a post-treatment method involving blade coating formamidinium iodide (FAI) under air atmosphere is used. Instead of being washed away, as reported in literatures using spin coating process, PbI2 platelets are converted into cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3) through reaction with Cs and halide present in the original perovskite Cs0.22FA0.78Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3. An efficiency enhancement of (>10%) is achieved by FAI treatment, which does not require fast solvent removal or nitrogen (N2) atmospheres, indicating that FAI blade coating is an effective and straightforward method for the post-treatment of excess PbI2.
Enhancing Organic‐Inorganic Perovskite Thin Film Crystallization via Vapor‐Solid Reaction by Modifying PbI2 Precursors films with Pyridinium Trifluoromethanesulfonate

Abstract:The vapor‐solid reaction technique holds potential for large‐scale production of organic‐inorganic perovskite films. In two‐step deposition approach, the formation of perovskite heavily relies on the crystallization of the precursor film, typically lead iodide (PbI2). During the vapor‐solid reaction, organic vapors must diffuse through the PbI2 crystals and integrate into the PbI6 octahedral layers to create the perovskite structure. The high crystallinity of PbI2 can hinder this process and lead to incomplete conversions. The random distribution of excess PbI2 can be detrimental to the device by increasing charge recombination and accelerating the degradation of the solar cells. Herein, pyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate (PTFS) is introduced into the PbI2 precursor solution to control the nucleation and growth of PbI2 films. Our studies have shown that PTFS can effectively suppresses the crystallization of PbI2 and establishes hydrogen bonds with the formamidinium ion (FA+), facilitating the full transformation of PbI2 into perovskite. Additionally, PTFS engage in strong interactions with uncoordinated Pb2+ and FA+ ions, which helps to minimize defect formation. Consequently, these modifications have led to a notable increase in power conversion efficiency, reaching up to 21.19%, and the films have maintained 93% of their initial performance after 1580 hours of exposure to air. Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have received worldwide interests due to swiftly improved efficiency but the poor stability of the perovskite component hampers the device fabrication under normal condition. Herein, we develop a reliable nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route to stable perovskite films by intermediate chemistry and technology. Perovskite thin-film prepared by nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route is stable for two months with negligible PbI2-impurity under ∼65% humidity, whereas other perovskites prepared by traditional methods degrade distinctly after 2 weeks. Route optimization involves the reaction of PbI2 with excess HI to generate HPbI3, which subsequently undergoes reaction with excess CH3NH2 to deliver CH3NH3PbI3 thin films. High quality of intermediate HPbI3 and CH3NH2 abundance are two important factors to stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite. Excess volatile acid/base not only affords full conversion in nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route but also permits its facile removal for stoichiometric purification, resulting in average efficiency of 16.1% in forward/reverse scans.
Bifunctional Lewis Base‐Assisted Fabrication of High‐Quality CsPbIBr2 Perovskite for Efficient and Stable Solar Cells

Abstract:The inferior phase stability and unsatisfactory crystal quality of inorganic lead halide perovskites have severely impeded the development of inorganic perovskite solar cells. Herein, a bifunctional Lewis base additive, phenylthiourea (PTU), is incorporated into the CsPbIBr2 precursor to simultaneously enhance the quality and ameliorate the stability of the CsPbIBr2 perovskite film. The CS group of PTU strongly coordinates with PbBr2 to form the intermediate phase in the perovskite precursor, which effectively tunes the crystallization process of CsPbIBr2 and enables the formation of high‐quality CsPbIBr2 perovskite film with high crystallinity, large crystal grains, and indistinct grain boundaries. Meanwhile, the introduction of PTU additive leads to the sulfur insertion into the interstices of CsPbIBr2 perovskite lattice, which can stabilize the perovskite phase structure and passivate the undercoordinated Pb2+ defects. With these benefits, the assembled carbon‐based perovskite solar cell based on PTU‐CsPbIBr2 perovskite film delivers a high power conversion efficiency of 10.09%. In addition, the unencapsulated device maintains over 80% of its initial efficiency after 800 h of storage under ambient air. These results demonstrate an effective strategy to improve the performance and stability of inorganic perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:All inorganic perovskite of CsPbBr 3 based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasingly attentions in the hot topics for research of PSCs owing to their high stability in air. Fabrication of columnar CsPbBr 3 grains spanning the whole films is strongly desired for fabrication of highly efficient solar cells. Here, we introduce a polymer of polyethylene oxide (PEO) into PbBr 2 solution as a ligand to modify the formation of CsPbBr 3 films, and then promote the microstructure of CsPbBr 3 films, which evolves from small grains to equiaxed large grains with preferred crystallographic orientation. The improved quality of CsPbBr 3 films contributes to low defect density and prolonged life time of carriers. As a result, the efficiency of carbon-based hole transportation layer (HTL) free solar cell boosts from 5.92 % to 8.12 % by optimizing the volume fraction of PEO in PbBr 2 solution.
