Abstract:Five kinds of nickel supported zirconia (Ni/ZrO2) catalysts were prepared and characterized by N2 physisorption, X-Ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope(TEM) analysis. The effects of nickel loading and different reaction conditons on the catalytic activity were studied. The results showed that the conversion of levulinic acid increased with the increase of nickel content. It was found that the highest conversion could be achieved over 50 % Ni/ZrO2 and the highest turnover frequency(TOF) was obtained over 30% Ni/ZrO2. The reaction was accelerated with the increase of reaction temperature and much favored in dioxane than in water. The highest conversion of levulinic acid (99.1%) and yield of gamma-valerolactone (91.6%) were achieved after 9 hours under the conditions of 200℃ and hydrogen pressure of 5 MPa in dioxane.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to gamma-valerolactone (GVL) is a key reaction in the conversion of biomass to renewable fuels and value-added chemicals. Developing low-cost, highly efficient and reusable non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts is vital but challenging. Herein, non-noble Ni-Mn/SiO2 catalysts with a low Ni loading (2.0 wt%) were designed for the selective hydrogenation of LA to GVL. The results showed that the optimal Ni-Mn/SiO2 (Ni/Mn = 2) catalyst with well-dispersed and small-sized metal nanoparticles (2.21 nm) and moderate acid sites exhibited excellent activity and selectivity and achieved a 100% yield of GVL in a 1,4-dioxane solvent under mild reaction conditions (e.g., 0.8 mol% Ni, 140 degrees C and 2.0 MPa H-2) for 5.5 h and a 100% GVL yield at 180 degrees C for 2 h with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 190.2 h(-1), which is better than most non-noble metal catalysts reported. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited excellent reusability and could be recycled at least five times with only slight activity loss. This work provides new insights for the rational design of highly efficient and stable non-noble metal catalysts for the conversion of LA to GVL.

Abstract:Four types of nickel catalysts supported on aluminum oxide (Ni/Al2O3) with different nickel loadings were synthesized using the co-precipitation method and were used for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to prepare γ-valerolactone (GVL). The synthesized Ni/Al2O3 catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity in dioxane, and the activity of the catalysts was excellent even after being used four times in dioxane. The catalytic activity in dioxane as a solvent was found to be superior to the activity in water. Nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were employed to characterize the fresh and used catalysts. The effects of the nickel loading, temperature, hydrogen pressure, and substrate/catalyst ratio on the catalytic activity were investigated.

Abstract:In this work, a series of ZrO2-supported Cu, Ni and bimetallic Cu-Ni catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and stability in the in situ hydrogenation and decarboxylation of oleic acid using methanol as a hydrogen donor. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was a Cu-Ni alloy that was highly dispersed on mixed m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2. The bimetallic Cu-Ni/ZrO2 nanostructures not only exhibited better catalytic activity for the conversion of oleic acid compared to monometallic Cu/ZrO2 and Ni/ZrO2 catalysts but also demonstrated good reuse performance. The formation of the Cu-Ni alloy facilitated the decarboxylation reaction and inhibited the cracking reaction, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The good stability of Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was primarily due to the good hydrothermal stability of the ZrO2 support.

Abstract:CuNi-ZrO2 nanocomposites were prepared by a simple coprecipitation technique of copper, nickel and zirconium ions with potassium carbonate. The structures of the nanocomposites were characterized by N2 physical adsorption, XRD, H2-TPR and STEM-EDS. The Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 nanocomposite showed outstanding catalytic performance in hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL), especially NaOH solution (0.5 mol L-1) as a solvent. 100% LA conversion and > 99.9% GVL selectivity are achieved over Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 catalyst at 200 °C, 3 MPa for 1.5 h. Characterization results suggest that the excellent reactivity of the Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 may be due to a better reducibility of nickel oxide in the CuONiO-ZrO2, dispersion of Ni in the Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 compared to nickel oxide in the NiO-ZrO2 and Ni in the Ni0.5-ZrO2 and promotion of OH-. The results demonstrate that the Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 nanocomposite has potential to realize high efficiency and low-cost synthesis of liquid fuels from biomass.

Abstract:A stable and highly efficient supported Cu-Ni catalysts for the conversion of ethyl levulinate (EL) to gamma-valerolactone (GVL) was developed. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, TPD, TPR, and XPS. The support effect of metal oxides (Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2, and TiO2) revealed that Cu-Ni supported on Al2O3 showed the highest activity for EL hydrogenation to ethyl 4-hydroxypentanoate (EHP) and the subsequent intramolecular esterification of EHP to GVL. EHP intramolecular esterification to GVL in the ethanol solution was a reversible reaction with an equilibrium constant of 24 at 453 K. A simplified reaction kinetic network was established. The solvent had a significant influence on the reaction equilibrium and the catalyst stability. Cu-Ni/Al2O3 in n-hexane solvent gave a higher GVL yield than that in ethanol solvent, and showed better recyclability than that in toluene solvent. With optimizing the conditions, CuNi/Al2O3 gave 99.9% conversion and 98% selectivity to GVL with a space-time yield of 1.13 gGVL gcat(-1) h(-1) in n-hexane solvent with good recyclability. High Specific Surface Area Silica Nanorod Supported Bimetallic NiCu Effectively Catalyzes Levulinic Acid Hydrogenation to γ-Valerolactone

Abstract:Bimetallic NiCu catalysts supported on mesoporous SiO 2 nanorods were prepared by impregnation method with the help of complexing agents. The introduction of various complexing agents including citric acid (CA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), triethanolamine (TEOA), triethylamine (TEA) and ammonia (AMH) significantly affected the metal particle size, surface chemical state, redox and acidic properties. The NiCu/SiO 2 –PVP catalyst had the smallest metal nanoparticle sizes of 2.3 nm among the catalysts. The variation of metal particle size resulted in the differences of the metal-support interaction, which further caused the changes of the redox property. Acidic property was another indispensable factor to promote this reaction, and the types of complexing agents did not change the acidic strength distribution but the total number of that. The apparent activation energy on NiCu/SiO 2 –PVP was 26.55 kJ/mol, which was obviously lower than that on NiCu/SiO 2 –AMH (37.49 kJ/mol). Consequently, the NiCu/SiO 2 –PVP catalyst exhibited the best activity compared to other catalysts in the gas phase catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid with formic acid as the hydrogen source, achieving the highest levulinic acid conversion of 76.9% and γ-valerolactone selectivity of 91.6%. It also showed good catalytic stability within 20 h time-on-stream.

Abstract:Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds provides a viable strategy to synthesize high value-added chemicals and biofuels, for which the development of efficient catalysts still remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a Zn-based single-atom catalyst (Zn/NC-950), prepared by pyrolysis of ZIF-8 at 950 degrees C, for the CTH of ethyl levulinate to gamma- valerolactone (GVL). This catalyst exhibited excellent performance, affording a GVL selectivity of 95.3 % at an ethyl levulinate conversion of 100 %, using isopropanol as the hydrogen source at 200 degrees C and autogenous pressure. The structural characterization and theoretical calculation demonstrate that such extraordinary efficacy of the Zn/NC-950 catalyst is attributed to the dual ZnN3C1 3 C 1 and Zn-N2C2 2 C 2 sites of low Zn oxidation states, which work synergistically to generate the active hydrogen species and activate the carbonyl bonds, respectively. This work provides a rationale for the precise design of the non-noble metal single-atom catalysts efficient for the biomass valorization.

Abstract:A facile wet impregnation method was employed to prepare a bimetallic Ni–Cu catalyst on a mesoporous KIT-5 support, keeping the nickel loading constant (5 wt%) while varying the copper wt.% (xCu, where x = 8, 10, 12, 14). Several physico-chemical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (H 2 -TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were utilized for catalyst characterization. An environmentally friendly NiCu bimetallic-supported catalyst system was developed in response to many problems, including metal leaching, sintering, and cost. A mesoporous KIT-5 silica support with a large surface area was used. The hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate to gamma-valerolactone was studied utilizing a high-pressure stirred reactor and a range of reaction temperatures (120–160 °C), hydrogen pressures (10–30 bar), and reaction periods. Various catalysts were used in the investigation. Among all tested catalysts, the 12Cu–5Ni/KIT-5 one shows excellent activity. The best GVL yield is 84% at a conversion of 100% after 8 h of treatment at 150 °C and 25 bar H 2 pressure; the promotion is also 76.1%. Optimization of reaction conditions was shown to correlate the physicochemical parameters of the catalyst with its activity.

Abstract:A series of Cu and Ni supported on ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized by ion exchange (IE) and impregnation (IMP) techniques and examined for the aqueous phase hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) at atmospheric pressure. Hydrogenation of LA to GVL proceeds through LA dehydration to AL (angelica lactone) and subsequent hydrogenation of it to GVL, emphasizing the combined role of an acid and a metal site present on the catalyst surface. The interaction of Cu and/or Ni with ZSM-5 was elucidated using various characterization techniques such as powder XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, CO and/or H 2 pulse chemisorption and SS NMR techniques. The CO chemisorption results indicated a lower uptake on Cu-ZSM-5(IMP) than on Cu-ZSM-5(IE). The H 2 uptake was lower on Ni-ZSM-5(IE) than on Ni-ZSM-5(IMP). In the comparative analysis, the Ni-ZSM-5(IMP) catalyst exhibited a high rate of GVL formation, while the Cu-ZSM-5(IE) catalyst displayed a larger proportion of AL formation than the other catalysts prepared under similar protocols. The influence of the surface active sites on the product distribution was rationalized based on the physico-chemical characteristics of the fresh and reduced catalysts.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and efficient hydrogenation catalysts is crucial for Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology. ZnO-modified Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared and evaluated for their catalytic hydrogenation of N-propylcarbazole (NPCZ). Among all catalysts, NiZn 11 Al achieved saturation hydrogenation of NPCZ within 25 min and exhibited excellent potential for industrial applications. The moderate amount of ZnO enhanced the dispersion of Ni nanoparticles, while excessive ZnO inhibited dispersion and promoted Ni-Zn alloy formation. The amount of ZnO doping determined the interaction strength and direction of electron transfer between Ni and ZnO. The formation of the Ni-ZnO interface effectively prevented agglomeration of Ni nanoparticles and improved catalytic stability for NPCZ hydrogenation. Dispersed Ni δ+ boosted hydrogen activation, and the strong acid sites of the catalyst promoted the hydrogenation activity. The synergistic effect of Ni and ZnO was shown to accelerate the hydrogenation rate and lower the activation energy compared with Ru-based catalysts.

Abstract:The use of eco-friendly biomass as a resource is an efficient way to address the problems of fossil fuel depletion and climate change. In biomass conversion, versatile γ-valerolactone (GVL) is generally obtained from levulinic acid (LA) hydrogenation via a multimetallic catalyst system. Despite conversion efficiency being enhanced in mild conditions due to metal interactions, maintaining high catalyst stability is still a challenge. In this study, we synthesized a surrounded Co0.52Ni0.48@Al2O3-IE catalyst that exhibited excellent alloying and synergistic interaction between the metal constituents. Under relatively mild reaction conditions, the GVL yield over the catalyst exceeded 99% in LA hydrogenation. The catalyst showed no deactivation in a test of five cycles, displaying superiority in stability, possibly due to reasons of the physical isolation of the shell and the alumina retention on the Co-Ni alloys surface caused by the reversibility of exchange equilibrium. The present work demonstrated that a surrounded structured catalyst fabricated by ion exchange (IE) with active metals physically enclosed can lead to high catalytic activity and superior stability.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate (EL) to gamma-valerolactone (GVL) is an important process in biomass conversion to value-added chemicals. However, it remains challenging to develop efficient non-noble metal catalysts with high activity and selectivity for this reaction. Herein, we investigated the effect of second metal modification on Ni3P catalysts, where a series of Ni-P-M/Al2O3 and Ni-M/Al2O3 catalysts (M = Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) were prepared for EL hydrogenation. The results show that Ni-P-Cu/Al2O3 exhibited the highest activity, being 2.3 and 1.7 times more active than Ni-Cu/Al2O3 and Ni-P/Al2O3, respectively. Reaction evaluations at different temperatures revealed that Ni-P/Al2O3 and Ni-P-Cu/Al2O3 have a similar activation energy of similar to 65 kJ/mol, lower than that of Ni-Cu/Al2O3 (86 kJ/mol). The combined characterization and reaction results suggested that the introduction of Cu enriched surface P in the Ni-P-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst, providing more active sites to enhance C=O hydrogenation. These findings provide insights for optimizing non-noble metal catalysts for EL hydrogenation.

Herein, a ZrO2-x modified Cu nanocatalyst with unique interfacial structure Cu-O-Zr3+-Vö (Vö denotes oxygen vacancy), was elaborately designed and prepared via a facile in situ structural transformation from layered double hydroxide precursors, confirmed by a comprehensive study including HADDF-STEM, in situ EXAFS and quasi in situ XPS measurements. The optimized catalyst (Cu/ZrO2-x-S3) exhibits an extremely high catalytic performance toward dimethyl oxalate (DMO) hydrogenation to ethylene glycol (EG), with a yield of 99.5 %. Notably, the turnover frequency (TOF) value and space time yield of EG reach up to 42.4 h−1 and 1.05 gEG⋅gcat−1⋅h−1, respectively. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest level compared with previously reported Cu-based catalysts under similar conditions. In addition, the in situ investigations (in situ DMO-FTIR, in situ DMO-EXAFS) and catalytic evaluations substantiate interfacial sites serve as active center: the Zr3+-Vö facilitates adsorption and activation of CO/CO groups; whilst H2 molecule undergoes dissociation at the interfacial Cu species, followed by hydrogen spillover onto Cu-O-Zr for hydrogenation of activated CO/CO bonds. This interfacial synergistic catalysis offers a new reaction pathway with decreased activation energy, accounting for the resulting superior catalytic performance, which can be extended to other carbon-oxygen bonds hydrogenation systems.
