Abstract:Bipolar membranes (BPMs) are a special class of ion exchange membranes constituted by a cation and anion exchange layer, allowing the generation of protons and hydroxide ions via a water dissociation mechanism. Such unique feature makes bipolar membranes attractive for a variety of applications in many sectors, such as (bio)chemical industry, food processing, environmental protection, and energy conversion and storage, amongst others. Research and development on BPMs over the past two decades have created a growing market with commercial BPMs available today from multiple manufacturers. Moreover, BPMs are rapidly gaining attention for their technical, environmental, and economical advancements compared to conventional processes for the production of acid and base, or local pH control. This review article aims to provide an overall understanding of BPM technology by describing the current state of the art on membrane synthesis, properties, theoretical models, and applications, based on the last 70 years of scientific publications and patents in this field. Optimised BPM properties are discussed, together with a summary of the advances in BPM fabrication to attain the targeted optimised characteristics. Furthermore, novel BPM applications are presented, including a list of shortcomings of current membranes that need to be overcome to unlock new promising applications.

Abstract:Salts in water can be dissociated to acid and base in the presence of bipolar membranes(BPMs),which acts as catalyst in the process of water dissociation.Therefore,BMPs could be used in environmental protection and resource recycling.This paper reviewed technology progresses in BPMs,including preparation,characteristics,integration of BMPs and pollution control applications.Three major models BPMs for catalyzing water dissociation were introduced.Applications of BMPs in environmental protection were also introduced.Moreover,the prospects of BPMs applications in redox flow batteries and hydrolysis hydrogen production were also presented,and the limitations of current BPMs were discussed.The integration of BMPs with other chemical processes,and application for redox flow batteries can be prospective in future research.

Abstract:Iron-based aqueous redox flow batteries (IBA-RFBs) represent a promising solution for long-duration energy storage, supporting the integration of intermittent renewable energy into the grid, thanks to their commendable safety profile and cost-effectiveness. Membranes, serving as pivotal components in redox flow batteries (RFBs), play a crucial role in facilitating ion conduction for internal circuit formation while preventing the crossover of redox-active species. Given their direct impact on RFB performance and cost, membranes merit considerable attention. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in membranes tailored for IBA-RFBs. Initially, it delineates the operational mechanisms of various IBA-RFB configurations. Subsequently, it delves into key performance metrics for evaluating membrane efficacy, dissecting the intricate interplay between membrane performance and overall IBA-RFB efficiency. Building upon this foundation, the review spotlights recent breakthroughs in ion exchange membranes and porous membranes designed specifically for IBA-RFBs, showcasing their remarkable ability to bolster battery efficiency, cycling stability, and cost-effectiveness. Lastly, this review outlines future directions for membrane development, offering some insights to propel the widespread adoption of IBA-RFBs on a large scale.

Abstract:Bipolar membranes have great potential in the field of electrochemistry, especially in water electrolysis and CO2 electroreduction. This review focuses on the design principles of high‐performance polymer bipolar membranes, especially for membrane material synthesis and interface regulation, aiming to provide guidance for the large‐scale application of bipolar membranes. Electrochemical devices allow the conversion and storage of renewable energy into high‐value chemicals to mitigate carbon emissions, such as hydrogen production by water electrolysis, carbon dioxide reduction, and the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. Independent regulation of the electrode pH environment is essential for optimizing the electrode reaction kinetics and enriching the catalyst species. The in situ water dissociation (WD, H2O→H++OH− ) in bipolar membranes (BPMs) offers the possibility of realizing this pH adjustment. Here, the design principles of high‐performance polymeric BPMs in electrochemical device applications are presented by analyzing and connecting WD principles and current–voltage curves. The structure–transport property relationships and membrane durability, including the chemical and mechanical stability of the anion‐ and cation‐exchange layers as well as the integrality of the interfacial junction, are systematically discussed. The advantages of BPMs in new electrochemical devices and major challenges to break through are also highlighted. The improved ion and water transport in the membrane layer and the minimized WD overpotential and ohmic loss at high current densities are expected to facilitate the promotion of BPMs from conventional chemical production to novel electrochemical applications.

Abstract:A new preparative pathway for the bipolar membranes was initiated via the electrospinning and hot-press process. The prepared bipolar membrane was consisting of sulfonated poly (phenylene oxide), polyethylene glycol, and quaternized poly (phenylene oxide). The above mentioned membrane was fabricated by the continuous electrospinning of the respective layer, followed by the solvent atmosphere treatment and hot-pressing, to obtain a transparent and dense structure. The thickness of each layer can be easily tuned by controlling the electrospinning parameters. The clear interfacial structure was observed and confirmed by the scanning electron microscope. The bipolar performance is evaluated by the current–voltage curves and production yield of acid and base. The final optimized bipolar membrane had similar yield of acid and base as the casting membrane. However, extremely lower potential drop value was observed when they are applied for the production of acid and base. The experimental results showed that, electrospinning is an effective and well controlled way to fabricate bipolar membranes, in which anion or cation exchange layer as well as interfacial layer can be easily changed or added as requested.

Abstract:During the last 60 years,ion exchange membranes evolved from a laboratory tool to industrial products with significant technical and commercial impact.Today ion exchange membranes are receiving considerable attention and are successfully applied for desalination of sea and brackish water and for treating industrial effluents.Due to their superiority in selective transport of different ions,they are efficient tools for the concentration/ separation of food and pharmaceutical products containing ionic species and the manufacture of basis chemical products.The evolvement of an ion exchange membrane not only makes the process cleaner and more energy-efficient but also recovers useful effluents that are now going to wastes,and thus makes sustaining development of the society.In request to the current national policy on industries,this review focuses on the significant requirements in China and recent novel developments in the field of ion exchange membranes including preparations,applications and process integrations.The future developments are also prospected.

Abstract:Bipolar membranes, a new type of composite ion exchange membrane, contain an anion exchange layer, a cation exchange layer and an interface layer. The interface layer or junction is the connection between the anion and cation exchange layers. Water is dissociated into protons and hydroxide ions at the junction, which provides solutions to many challenges in the chemical, environmental and energy fields. By combining bipolar membranes with electrodialysis technology, acids and bases could be produced with low cost and high efficiency. The interface layer or junction of bipolar membranes (BPMs) is the connection between the anion and cation exchange layers, which the membrane and interface layer modification are vital for improving the performance of BPMs. This paper reviews the effect of modification of a bipolar membrane interface layer on water dissociation efficiency and voltage across the membrane, which divides into three aspects: organic materials, inorganic materials and newly designed materials with multiple components. The structure of the interface layer is also introduced on the performance of bipolar membranes. In addition, the remainder of this review discusses the challenges and opportunities for the development of more efficient, sustainable and practical bipolar membranes.

Abstract:Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) is a kind of technology that integrates solvent and salt dissociation. It can realize salt conversion without second salt pollution or provide H+ and OH-/alkoxide ions in situ without salt introduction. Thus, it inherently possesses economical and environmental benefits. Moreover, its technological compatibility gives rise to new functions when it couples with other technologies, such as complexion, ion exchange, extraction, and adsorption. In view of the above peculiarities, EDBM has found many interesting applications in chemistry, food processing, biochemical industries, and environmental protection. However, its development has been restricted by such factors as lack of recognition of its contribution to industrial ecology, high membrane cost, insufficient research investment, and scarce operation experience. This paper compiles an introduction to this technology from the perspective of industrial ecology and conducts an extensive examination into EDBM applications. Its purpose is to gather synergic strength from academia, industry, and government to perfect EDBM for sustainable development.

Abstract:Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from the combustion of fossil fuels aggravates the global greenhouse effect. The implementation of CO2 capture and transformation technologies have recently received great attention for providing a pathway in dealing with global climate change. Among these technologies, electrochemical CO2 capture technology has attracted wide attention because of its environmental friendliness and flexible operating processes. Bipolar membranes (BPMs) are considered as one of the key components in electrochemical devices, especially for electrochemical CO2 reduction and electrodialysis devices. BPMs create an alkaline environment for CO2 capture and a stable pH environment for electrocatalysis on a single electrode. The key to CO2 capture in these devices is to understand the water dissociation mechanism occurring in BPMs, which could be used for optimizing the operating conditions for CO2 capture and transformation. In this paper, the references and technologies of electrochemical CO2 capture based on BPMs are reviewed in detail, thus the challenges and opportunities are also discussed for the development of more efficient, sustainable and practical CO2 capture and transformation based on BPMs.

Abstract:Ion exchange membranes play important roles in energy generation and storage field. However, a major barrier in the way of large‐scale application is the high cost of membranes. The Biphasic membrane‐less redox battery is a new strategy recently proposed and it is the most likely to achieve large‐scale applications among many membrane‐less strategies.Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) play important roles in energy generation and storage field, such as fuel cell, flow battery, however, a major barrier in the way of large‐scale application is the high cost of membranes (e.g., Nafion membranes price generally exceeds USD$ 200 m−2). The membrane‐less technology is one of the promising approaches to solve the problem and thus has attracted much attention and been explored in a variety of research paths. This review introduces one of the representative membrane‐less battery types, Biphasic membrane‐less redox batteries that eliminate the IEMs according to the principle of solvent immiscibility and realizes the phase splitting in a thermodynamically stable state. It is systematically classified and summarizes their performances as well as the problems they are suffering from, and then several effective solutions are proposed based on the modification of electrodes and electrolytes. Finally, special attention is given to the challenges and prospects of Biphasic membrane‐less redox batteries, which could contribute to the development of membrane‐less batteries.
