Abstract:As to the status of water shortage and severe water pollution,developing an effec-tive strategy to ensure the water security is one of the urgent issues. Membrane-based water treatment is highly focused and studied to ensure the water security due to its high efficiency and easy-to-operate. In this paper,the connotation and status of water security in China were presented,and a detailed review was drawn on the application of membrane technologies to de-velop water resources and reduce wastewater emission. Finally,several suggestions were listed for the development of membrane-based water treatment in water security.

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a new technology of wastewater treatment which has been developed in recent years. It is efficient in dyeing wastewater treatment. The application of MBR in dyeing wastewater treatment was reviewed in this paper. The processing conditions of membrane bioreactor in dyeing wastewater treatment and their influences on the quality of effusion and membrane fouling were summarized and discussed. Final- ly, the future development of MBR for dyeing wastewater treatment was also prospected.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry was treated for utilization by microfiltration(MF) and electrodialysis(ED). The results showed that microfiltration was suitable for pre-treatment, while the electrodialysis was suitable for salts,organics and COD removal. The final conductivity of the product water after ED was as low as 260μS/cm and the ultimate COD value was about 20mg/L.The quality of product water was close to municipal tap water and very suitable for reuse as industrial cycle cooling water.

Abstract:Nowadays, membrane has played an important role in wastewater treatment. However, high membrane cost and membrane fouling has hindered the developing of conventional membrane separation technology. With low-cost supporting membrane and easy operation, dynamic membrane (DM) technology presents a new route for pollutants separation in wastewater treatment. Similar pollutants removal and high separation efficiency made it more suitable for application in waste-water pretreatment and sludge separation. To have a full understanding of recent development of membrane separation technology, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and dynamic membrane filtration were briefly introduced and compared in this study. The filtration and pollutants removal performance in membrane bioreactor and dynamic membrane bioreactor were also evaluated. Besides, future perspectives of membrane separation technology with membrane fouling control, membrane cost and maintenance were presented for better application of membrane technology. Overall, DM technology indicates one potential developing direction of membrane separation technology in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry has been treated for reutilization by electrodialysis(ED)and reverse osmosis(RO)in laboratory.The results show that most of the salinity and COD can be removed by ED.The conductivity of the effluent after ED is as low as 260 μS/cm,COD is 46 mg/L.After the concentrated water is treated consequently by RO the conductivity of permeate is 200 μS/cm and COD 27.7 mg/L.After the treatment,both of the effluent and permeate conform to the standard of reutilization,and can be reused as circulating cooling water,without negative influence on the production.

Abstract:Nowadays membrane technology has been widely employed in the treatment of in-dustrial wastewater and municipal sewage. In the last decade,plenty of work focused on the preparation and industrialization of advanced polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with excellent performance has been carried out by the Chemical Engineering Department in Tsing-hua University,which follows the line of preparation formula design,advanced production and membrane module development. This paper reviewed the history information about these re-searches. Firstly,PVDF membranes with good performance were prepared via thermally in-duced phase separation (TIPS) method based on thermodynamic and dynamic researches on the membrane formation process. Secondly,advanced production of PVDF hollow-fiber membrane was achieved by an effective combination of material processing and unit operation. Finally, different modules were designed and fabricated according to the characteristic of PVDF mem-brane prepared via TIPS method and different application situations. The results show that the PVDF membranes prepared via TIPS method break through the traditional phase separation lim-itation and exceed performance expectation;as a result TIPS method can be the top option for wastewater treatment.

Through the introduction of their treating craft and operation results and economic benefit analysis on some projects, this paper elucidates that application of the membrane separation technology in fine chemical industry is feasible not only in respect of technology but also in economics attributed by its advantages, and the integrated environmental benefit with economic benefit can be reached.
