Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:As to the status of water shortage and severe water pollution,developing an effec-tive strategy to ensure the water security is one of the urgent issues. Membrane-based water treatment is highly focused and studied to ensure the water security due to its high efficiency and easy-to-operate. In this paper,the connotation and status of water security in China were presented,and a detailed review was drawn on the application of membrane technologies to de-velop water resources and reduce wastewater emission. Finally,several suggestions were listed for the development of membrane-based water treatment in water security.

Abstract:Membrane bioreactor (MBR) and its hybrid process are wildly used in removing micro-pollutants from source water. Based on a comprehensive literature review,the paper summarizes the application status,pollutants removal efficiencies and mechanisms of MBR in micro-polluted source water disposal. It also presents membrane-fouling mechanism and gives some reasonable advices to prevent membrane fouling. Membrane cleaning methods are introduced which will recover the efficiency of filtration flux. Finally,future research directions of MBR are prospected.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry was treated for utilization by microfiltration(MF) and electrodialysis(ED). The results showed that microfiltration was suitable for pre-treatment, while the electrodialysis was suitable for salts,organics and COD removal. The final conductivity of the product water after ED was as low as 260μS/cm and the ultimate COD value was about 20mg/L.The quality of product water was close to municipal tap water and very suitable for reuse as industrial cycle cooling water.

Abstract:Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a new technology of wastewater treatment which has been developed in recent years. It is efficient in dyeing wastewater treatment. The application of MBR in dyeing wastewater treatment was reviewed in this paper. The processing conditions of membrane bioreactor in dyeing wastewater treatment and their influences on the quality of effusion and membrane fouling were summarized and discussed. Final- ly, the future development of MBR for dyeing wastewater treatment was also prospected.

Abstract:Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) represent the best available technology for municipal and wastewater treatment, as confirmed by the number of wastewater treatment plants based on MBRs in operation worldwide. However, MBRs are not able to effectively reject some substances, like low molecular weight organic compounds found in wastewaters. Therefore, further improvements are needed. In this respect, coupling MBRs with high-retention membrane processes, like reverse osmosis (RO) and membrane distillation (MD), was investigated in the past years. In this paper, the main MBR features and their commercial development are presented. Their performance when coupled with RO and with MD units is discussed, as well as limitations toward a large-scale implementation, with particular emphasis on the further research needed in the field. Finally, MBR-RO and MBR-MD integrated systems are compared in terms of the most significant parameters. Actions to take in order to overcome linked issues are also proposed.

Abstract:In this review, the application of membrane-based technology in water social circulation was summarized. Water social circulation encompassed the entire process from the acquirement to discharge of water from natural environment for human living and development. The focus of this review was primarily on the membrane-based technology in recovery of water and other valuable resources such as mineral ions, nitrogen and phosphorus. The main text was divided into four main sections according to water flow in the social circulation: drinking water treatment, agricultural utilization, industrial waste recycling, and urban wastewater reuse. In drinking water treatment, the acquirement of water resources was of the most importance. Pressure-driven membranes, such as ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) were considered suitable in natural surface water treatment. Additionally, electrodialysis (ED) and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) were also effective in brackish water desalination. Agriculture required abundant water with relative low quality for irrigation. Therefore, the recovery of water from other stages of the social circulation has become a reasonable solution. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) was a typical technique attributed to low-toxicity effluent. In industrial waste reuse, the osmosis membranes (FO and PRO) were utilized due to the complex physical and chemical properties of industrial wastewater. Especially, membrane distillation (MD) might be promising when the wastewater was preheated. Resources recovery in urban wastewater was mainly divided into recovery of bioenergy (via anaerobic membrane bioreactors, AnMBR), nitrogen (utilizing MD and gas-permeable membrane), and phosphorus (through MBR with chemical precipitation). Furthermore, hybrid/integrated systems with membranes as the core component enhanced their performance and long-term working ability in utilization. Generally, concentrate management and energy consumption control might be the key areas for future advancements of membrane-based technology.

Abstract:This study demonstrated the feasibility of implementing of MBR in pharmaceutical wastewater independently, and concluded different applications of MBR in industries. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology was a new wastewater treatment technology with a combination of membrane separation technology and biological treatment technology, which had unique advantages on pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. The modified membrane rector design provided a significantly lower concentration of NH 3-N, Phosphorous, Total Nitrogen and COD around the membranes, and subsequently a more sustainable membrane performance due to much lower overall fouling rates. In this paper, the classification and structure of biological waste water treatment by using MBR technology were summed up along with some examples of MBR in industrial wastewater treatment, which was emphatically analyzed and discussed. Finally, the prospect of MBR in industrial wastewater treatment was described. The industrial wastewater was a high-strength wastewater which had characteristics of complicated constituents, high organics concentration, highly toxic.

Abstract:The occurrence of emerging or newly identified contaminants in water resources is becoming a great concern for public health. The worldwide freshwater scarcity is also increasing. These have resulted in rapid growth in the demand for nonconventional water resources and sophisticated approaches to wastewater treatment. Existing conventional water treatment plants were not designed for these emerging contaminants. Therefore, new approaches to wastewater treatment are required. Among the most promising processes for various types of wastewater treatment and water reuse, membrane-assisted technologies have been accepted as suitable and reliable in different applications of water reuse. This chapter discusses the application of membrane processes and membrane-assisted technologies in wastewater treatment and water reuse. The chapter mainly focuses on membrane bioreactors (MBRs), including a comparison between conventional activated sludge processes and MBRs. Emerging membrane-assisted technologies are also discussed.

Abstract:Membrane aerated bioreactors(MABR) is a novel combination wastewater treatment process where gas-permeable membranes are applied to aeration.MABR is characterized by bubbleless aeration and special biofilm attached on the aerated membrane.Bubbleless aeration provides a high oxygen transfer rate and has a potential in treatment of high strength wastewater or wastewater containing volatile organic substances.The biofilms attached on the aerated membrane with counter diffusion of oxygen and organic matter can be utilized to remove carbon and nitrogen simultaneously.In this paper,the characteristics of MABR were described.Research process in this field was reviewed;and the future topics were prospected.

Abstract:Since the introduction of the membrane bioreactor (MBR) in China in the early 1990s, remarkable progress has been achieved on the research and application of this technology. China has now become one of the most active fields in the world in this regard. This review outlines the development of MBR-based processes in China and their performance of treating municipal and industrial wastewaters. Since membrane fouling is a critical operational problem with MBR processes, this paper also proposes updated understanding of fouling mechanisms and strategies of fouling control, which are mainly compiled from publications of Chinese researchers. As for the commercial application of MBR in the country, the latest statistics of large-scale MBR plants (>10000 m3·d−1) are provided, and the growth trend of total treatment capacity as well as its driving force is analyzed.
