Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are widely used in many water treatment processes, such as seawater and brackish water desalination. Membranes with improved separation performance and antifouling properties can be prepared by incorporating nanoparticles into membrane matrix. A number of nanomaterials can serve as potential water transport channels and modify the structure and surface properties of the membrane thin film layers. Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) can benefit from the high performance of both the organic matrix and inorganic fillers, which are believed to be the next generation of novel membrane materials. Recent advances of the nanoparticle-filled RU, NF and forward osmosis (FO) MMMs are reviewed in this paper. The effects of nanomaterials with various properties on membrane structure and separation performance are discussed, including zeolites, nanotubes, mesoporous materials, pure metal, metallic oxides, graphene oxide and aquaporin. The dispersibility of nanofillers in MMMs and their compatibility with polymer matrix can be improved by surface modification. Different methods of nanoparticle addition and membrane preparation are also illustrated in detail. Based on the analysis of the recent works, the membrane formation and separation mechanisms are explored and the main problems of membrane synthesis and application are summarized. Finally, the future development of RO, NF and FO MMMs for water treatment process is suggested.

Abstract:In the face of human society's great requirements for health industry, and the much stricter safety and quality standards in the biomedical industry, the demand for advanced membrane separation technologies continues to rapidly grow in the world. Nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) as the high-efficient, low energy consumption, and environmental friendly membrane separation techniques, show great promise in the application of biomedical separation field. The chemical compositions, microstructures and surface properties of NF/RO membranes determine the separation accuracy, efficiency and operation cost in their applications. Accordingly, recent studies have focused on tuning the structures and tailoring the performance of NF/RO membranes via the design and synthesis of various advanced membrane materials, and exploring universal and convenient membrane preparation strategies, with the objective of promoting the better and faster development of NF/RO membrane separation technology in the biomedical separation field. This paper reviews the recent studies on the NF/RO membranes constructed with various materials, including the polymeric materials, different dimensional inorganic/organic nanomaterials, porous polymeric materials and metal coordination polymers, etc. Moreover, the influence of membrane chemical compositions, interior microstructures, and surface characteristics on the separation performance of NF/RO membranes, are comprehensively discussed. Subsequently, the applications of NF/RO membranes in biomedical separation field are systematically reported. Finally, the perspective for future challenges of NF/RO membrane separation techniques in this field is discussed.

Abstract:The worldwide one major and important issue is the increasing shortage of freshwater. Water is polluted by various category of pollutant such as heavy metal, organic toxic chemical, dyes and others. In such situation providing better solutions for water treatment is a major challenge for researchers. Various techniques have been used in wastewater treatment applications but among those techniques the membrane technology is the most promising technology. This chapter contains recent progress of membrane technology for advanced wastewater treatment, is systematically summarize. This review includes introduction about different membrane technology such as microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO). Abstract:Membrane bioreactor(MBR) is an efficient technology,combining biological treatment with membrane separation process.Being widely used in various fields of wastewater treatment,MBR holds good advantages over traditional ways.The characteristics of different kinds of novel membrane bioreactors are investigated and the technological structure parameters of MBR concerning industrial application in wastewater treatment are studied.The key factors in MBR operation facing current challenges are emphatically analyzed.Furthermore,the cause formation and controlling measures of membrane fouling are discussed.The future development of novel MBR in wastewater treatment is prospected.

Abstract:The combination of membranes and microfluidic systems has been applied in areas such as bioscience, environmental and analytical chemistry, and in the past time research into the integration of membrane mass transfer control functions into microfluidic devices has shown a significant growth trend. The multiple uses of membrane-based microfluidic systems have been demonstrated in published reports. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the development process in this field, starting with the basic terminology of microfluidic and membrane processes and outlining membrane-based microfluidic platforms that combine the two, followed by a classification of membrane integration on a chip based on the preparation methods used to combine the two. Three membrane functions that membranes can perform in microfluidic systems are then discussed; they are separation and enrichment of substances, immobilization and culturing of cells, and fluid control of pumps and valves. Finally, several possible research directions and related issues for membrane-based microfluidic platforms are presented, providing a deeper reference for future research combining membranes with microfluidic platforms.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology has shown great potential as an indispensable application in the growing energy demand. Desalination and gas separation is challenging membrane separation processes; among them, membrane materials play a crucial role. Many modern nanomaterials, such as inorganic-organic mixed nano -materials (covalent/metal-organic frameworks (COFs/MOFs)), can shape specific channels for conveying and separating target molecules due to their structural tunability. By combining novel nanomaterials with traditional polymeric materials, new opportunities have arisen, significantly improving performance and reducing energy consumption. This review aims to generalize the advantages and limitations of varying membrane materials, including organic and inorganic materials. Furthermore, emerging nanomaterials and new mixed matrix mate-rials are discussed from different perspectives. Finally, we proposed to combine outstanding membranes with various novel materials to enhance energy-efficient membrane materials' commercial applications.

Abstract:The shortages of membrane materials with high performance and effective control technique for membrane fouling are the key issues restricting the large-scale applications of membrane separation technology. For this reason, several signiifcant achievements of scientiifc research were obtained by “Bioengineering Media and Equipment Team” of Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After about ten years of research, high-performance pervaporation membranes, membrane process intensification techniques and efficient membrane equipment were developed by the team. Parts of the achievements have realized industrial applications, such as in seasoning clariifcation and reifning, water puriifcation and wastewater treatment, and concentration of traditional Chinese medicine, creating remarkable economic and social beneifts. The achievements acquired from the team make contributions to enhance the R&D level of Chinese membrane industry and bridge the gap between the foreign advanced level and ours, as well as promote the large-scale application of membrane technology.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic composite membranes are of great interest in modern water treatment processes because they offer potentially superior separation efficiency and advanced functionality by integrating the properties of polymers and inorganics. The biggest challenge in the fabrication and applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes is the incompatibility of organic-inorganic interfaces. In this minireview, we summarize the most recent advances in molecular engineering to tailor the properties of interfaces in composite membranes. Three typical models (i.e. mixed matrix models, interface composite models, and dual-layer composite models) are presented to demonstrate how to regulate these interfaces via molecular engineering and how the interfacial properties ultimately affect the membrane performance.
