Abstract:A multiple membrane process aimed at reutilization of plating combined wastewater after physical and chemical pretreatment in mechanical industry was developed for selective separation to reduce cost and mitigated the increasing heavy metal pollution. The process was divided into three stages: firstly, microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) was used to separate the possible organic and suspended matters, secondly, electrodialysis (ED) was carried out for effective desalination, and thirdly, the concentrate from ED was treated by nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) separately to increase the recovery rate of water. Results showed that filtration characteristics of UF membrane here was not so good as usually, even if compared with MF membrane. And RO performed better than NF in wastewater separation, especially in anti-compacting ability of membrane. Since the rejection rate of heavy metal ions and COD in ED/RO process is high, all the product water exceeded the related qualification and could be reused as cooling water in industry.

Abstract:Salts in water can be dissociated to acid and base in the presence of bipolar membranes(BPMs),which acts as catalyst in the process of water dissociation.Therefore,BMPs could be used in environmental protection and resource recycling.This paper reviewed technology progresses in BPMs,including preparation,characteristics,integration of BMPs and pollution control applications.Three major models BPMs for catalyzing water dissociation were introduced.Applications of BMPs in environmental protection were also introduced.Moreover,the prospects of BPMs applications in redox flow batteries and hydrolysis hydrogen production were also presented,and the limitations of current BPMs were discussed.The integration of BMPs with other chemical processes,and application for redox flow batteries can be prospective in future research.

Abstract:Bipolar membranes have great potential in the field of electrochemistry, especially in water electrolysis and CO2 electroreduction. This review focuses on the design principles of high‐performance polymer bipolar membranes, especially for membrane material synthesis and interface regulation, aiming to provide guidance for the large‐scale application of bipolar membranes. Electrochemical devices allow the conversion and storage of renewable energy into high‐value chemicals to mitigate carbon emissions, such as hydrogen production by water electrolysis, carbon dioxide reduction, and the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. Independent regulation of the electrode pH environment is essential for optimizing the electrode reaction kinetics and enriching the catalyst species. The in situ water dissociation (WD, H2O→H++OH− ) in bipolar membranes (BPMs) offers the possibility of realizing this pH adjustment. Here, the design principles of high‐performance polymeric BPMs in electrochemical device applications are presented by analyzing and connecting WD principles and current–voltage curves. The structure–transport property relationships and membrane durability, including the chemical and mechanical stability of the anion‐ and cation‐exchange layers as well as the integrality of the interfacial junction, are systematically discussed. The advantages of BPMs in new electrochemical devices and major challenges to break through are also highlighted. The improved ion and water transport in the membrane layer and the minimized WD overpotential and ohmic loss at high current densities are expected to facilitate the promotion of BPMs from conventional chemical production to novel electrochemical applications.

Abstract:The rapid development of industry has led to the generation of a large amount of electroplating wastewater. The direct discharge of untreated electroplating wastewater may lead to the formation of toxic metal-organic complexes, which is a challenging problem for human health and the living environment of organisms. Due to the high solubility of heavy metals in aquatic environments and their easy absorption by organisms, effective treatment of electroplating wastewater is of great significance. The ultimate goal of electroplating wastewater treatment should be to recover metals and water from electroplating wastewater. In indoor experiments, pilot tests, and industrial applications of electroplating wastewater treatment, membrane treatment technology commonly used in wastewater terminal treatment has attracted great attention. Membrane treatment technology seems to be the most promising method for removing heavy metals and organic pollutants from electroplating wastewater. This article reviews the membrane treatment technologies for electroplating wastewater, introduces the advantages and disadvantages of various membranes in the treatment of electroplating wastewater, the removal efficiency of pollutant types, and their comparison. The focus is on the treatment effects of nano-filtration membrane, ultra-filtration membrane, micro-filtration membrane, reverse osmosis membrane, ceramic membrane, biofilm, etc., on electroplating wastewater. Compared with a single treatment method, the combination of different processes shows higher efficiency in removing various pollutants.

Abstract:Bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) is a new membrane separation technology composed of electrodialysis (ED) through a bipolar membrane (BPM). Under the action of an electric field, H2O can be dissociated to H+ and OH−, and the anions and cations in the solution can be recovered as acids and bases, respectively, without adding chemical reagents, which reduces the application cost and carbon footprint, and leads to simple operation and high efficiency. Its application is becoming more widespread and promising, and it has become a research hotspot. This review mainly introduces the application of BMED to recovering salts in the form of acids and bases, CO2 capture, ammonia nitrogen recovery, and ion removal and recovery from wastewater. Finally, BMED is summarized, and future prospects are discussed.

Abstract:Membrane (ion membrane) electrolysis technology has gained a lot of attention and development because of its function and advantage of making full use of the two-stage reaction and separating the products of the two poles. In particular, the membrane electrolysis industry has a great potential to grow in the context of the transformation from "carbon-driven" to "electrically driven." There are many systems that require membrane or ion membrane electrolysis. Typical ones are electrolytic water to hydrogen, chlor-alkali, electrodialysis, electrometallurgy, etc. In this paper, several typical membrane (ion membrane) electrolysis scenarios are selected and analyzed in detail with respect to their principles, development history, characteristics, problems faced, and development prospects. A theoretical basis is laid for the development and application of efficient industrialized membrane electrolysis technology, which will be beneficial to the technological progress in this field.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry has been treated for reutilization by electrodialysis(ED)and reverse osmosis(RO)in laboratory.The results show that most of the salinity and COD can be removed by ED.The conductivity of the effluent after ED is as low as 260 μS/cm,COD is 46 mg/L.After the concentrated water is treated consequently by RO the conductivity of permeate is 200 μS/cm and COD 27.7 mg/L.After the treatment,both of the effluent and permeate conform to the standard of reutilization,and can be reused as circulating cooling water,without negative influence on the production.

Abstract:Some industrial processes emit a lot of wastewater containing heavy metals,such as copper,mercury,zinc and uranium,etc.Since the metals contained in the wastewater can not be decomposed,the only way to deal is to transfer its position and change its materialized form.The traditional recovery methods mainly include extraction separation,solid adsorption,ion exchange,coprecipitation,electrolytic and membrane separation,in which the membrane separation technology is widely used in food industry,medicine,biological,environmental protection,chemical industry,etc.The common treatment methods for recovering these metal ions and their advantages and disadvantages were introduced,focusing on the principle and properties of Liquid Membrane Emulsion technology.The main method of dealing with the uranium-containing wastewater was elaborated,and the application of Liquid Membrane Emulsion technology in processing the uranium-containing wastewater was prospected.

Abstract:The characteristics and performance of membrane separation technology and its application in dyestuffs, amino acid, titanium dioxide industries, and in intermediates manufacturing for pharmaceuticals at home and abroad are introduced, and the application engineering of membrane separation technology in fine chemical industry developed by the Development Center of Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology are briefed. Through the introduction of their treating craft and operation results and economic benefit analysis on some projects, this paper elucidates that application of the membrane separation technology in fine chemical industry is feasible not only in respect of technology but also in economics attributed by its advantages, and the integrated environmental benefit with economic benefit can be reached.

Abstract:Bipolar membranes (BPMs) are a special class of ion exchange membranes constituted by a cation and anion exchange layer, allowing the generation of protons and hydroxide ions via a water dissociation mechanism. Such unique feature makes bipolar membranes attractive for a variety of applications in many sectors, such as (bio)chemical industry, food processing, environmental protection, and energy conversion and storage, amongst others. Research and development on BPMs over the past two decades have created a growing market with commercial BPMs available today from multiple manufacturers. Moreover, BPMs are rapidly gaining attention for their technical, environmental, and economical advancements compared to conventional processes for the production of acid and base, or local pH control. This review article aims to provide an overall understanding of BPM technology by describing the current state of the art on membrane synthesis, properties, theoretical models, and applications, based on the last 70 years of scientific publications and patents in this field. Optimised BPM properties are discussed, together with a summary of the advances in BPM fabrication to attain the targeted optimised characteristics. Furthermore, novel BPM applications are presented, including a list of shortcomings of current membranes that need to be overcome to unlock new promising applications.

Abstract:Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from the combustion of fossil fuels aggravates the global greenhouse effect. The implementation of CO2 capture and transformation technologies have recently received great attention for providing a pathway in dealing with global climate change. Among these technologies, electrochemical CO2 capture technology has attracted wide attention because of its environmental friendliness and flexible operating processes. Bipolar membranes (BPMs) are considered as one of the key components in electrochemical devices, especially for electrochemical CO2 reduction and electrodialysis devices. BPMs create an alkaline environment for CO2 capture and a stable pH environment for electrocatalysis on a single electrode. The key to CO2 capture in these devices is to understand the water dissociation mechanism occurring in BPMs, which could be used for optimizing the operating conditions for CO2 capture and transformation. In this paper, the references and technologies of electrochemical CO2 capture based on BPMs are reviewed in detail, thus the challenges and opportunities are also discussed for the development of more efficient, sustainable and practical CO2 capture and transformation based on BPMs.

Abstract:The selective electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (BMSED) is an advanced electro-membrane process that combines monovalent perm-selective ion exchange membrane and a bipolar membrane, and presented significant potential in high salinity wastewater treatment and reclamation. Herein, we accomplished an in-depth assessment of the external-integration and internal-integration systems for the treatment of high-salinity mining wastewater and seawater desalination concentrate brine. The issues surrounding their cycling performance during batch operation, their anti-fouling potential in the presence of Mg2+/Ca2+ ions, and its specific operational cost were thoroughly investigated. The results suggest that the internal integration system demonstrates suitable stability during long-term operation under batch (cycling) mode. Nevertheless, the membrane exhibited inorganic scaling due to co-ion leakage at high current density. A highly pure NaOH was obtained through an internal integration process at a cost of 0.68 $/kg, outperforming the external integration system (98.96 %, 1.85 $/kg). The findings presented in this study offer valuable insights for the industrial application of BMSED technology in managing high salinity wastewaters.
