Abstract:The development of lead-free ceramics for electrostatic energy storage has attracted great interest because of the growing environmental concerns. Despite the extensive exploration, the unsuccess in synergistically optimizing both energy density and efficiency of polycrystalline materials is the major hurdle for their practical applications. Herein, Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O-3-modified BaTiO3 lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics are demonstrated to be viable candidates for energy storage. The materials can simultaneously deliver a high recoverable energy density of 2.9 J cm(-3) and a high energy efficiency of 86.8%, which are enhanced by 625% and 156% over those of unmodified BaTiO3, while keeping insensitive to thermal stimulus over 30-150 degrees C. It is unveiled that the incorporation of Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O-3 favors the formation of polar nanoregions (PNRs), as evidenced by transmission electron microscope and piezoresponse force microscopy, which increases the threshold field to induce long range order and decreases the stability thereof, contributing to the more linear-towards polarization behavior. The dynamic PNRs along with the decreased grain size, increased bulk density, and consequently enhanced dielectric breakdown strength (301.4 kV cm(-1)) are responsible for the superior energy storage performance of Bi (Mg0.5Zr0.5)O-3-modified BaTiO3 ceramics. This work opens up a new avenue to tailor lead-free dielectrics toward high energy storage performance for electrical energy storage.

Abstract:BiFeO3-BaTiO3-based relaxor ferroelectric ceramic has attracted increasing attention for energy storage applications. However, simultaneously achieving high recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) and efficiency (η) under low electric field has been a longstanding drawback for their practical applications. Herein, a novel relaxor ferroelectric material was designed by introducing (Sr0.7Bi0.2)TiO3 (SBT) into the composition 0.67BiFeO3-0.33BaTiO3 (BF-BT-xSBT). A large Wrec of ∼2.40 J/cm3 and a high η of ∼90.4 % were simultaneously realized under a low electric field of 180 kV/cm, which is superior to that of most previously reported lead-free ceramics. Moreover, moderate temperature endurance and excellent frequency stability were also obtained. More importantly, this ceramic has a large discharge current density (∼289.18 A/cm2), a discharge power density (∼14.46 MW/cm3) and short discharge time (<0.25 μs). These results not only demonstrate superior potential in BF-BT-SBT ceramics, but also offer a new design to tune the energy storage performance of lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics.

Abstract:Dielectric energy storage materials have attracted much attention because of their wide applications in the electronics industry. However, low energy storage density and poor thermostability limit their application. In this work, a strategy was proposed to prepare lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics with ultra-high energy storage properties and superior temperature stability by precisely adjusting the relaxation and ferroelectricity states and increasing the electric field intensity. An ultra-high recoverable energy storage density (W r) of 4.97 J/cm3 and an efficiency (η) of 84.4% are simultaneously obtained for the 0.95(0.9Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.1Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3)-0.05BaSnO3 ceramic. Moreover, a high W r of 2.73 J/cm3 with brilliant η of 80.6% are obtained in the ceramic at 140 ℃ and there is almost no thermal degradation of energy storage properties from 25 ℃ to 140 ℃. The W r and η have decreased by 2.2% and 1.9% after 105 cycles under 200 kV/cm, respectively, which demonstrates the good cycle stability of the sample. A discharge power density of up to 99.0 MW/cm3 is obtained in the 0.95(0.9Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.1Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3)-0.05BaSnO3 ceramic and the good charge and discharge performance of this sample is important for practical applications.

Abstract:The improvement of energy density and efficiency is currently the main challenge in the application of lead-free dielectric energy-storage materials. Relaxor ferroelectric ceramics are the most commonly selected materials for pulsed power capacitors because of their inherent advantages, such as ultra-high power density, fast charging/ discharging, and long lifetime. In this study, BiMg2/3Nb1/3O3 (BMN) was doped to enhance energy density and efficiency in the (1-x)Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3-xBiMg(2/3)Nb(1/3)O(3) systems based on the adjusted breakdown strength and polarization. As a result, a giant recoverable energy density of 3.81 J/cm(3) and a high energy efficiency of 90.5% were simultaneously achieved in the 0.925BCZT-0.075BMN ceramic, which the energy density is 26 times as large as that of BCZT ceramic. Excellent temperature (-25 to 100 degrees C) and frequency (1-100 Hz) stability of recoverable energy density and energy efficiency were confirmed with the fluctuations below 4.5%. Domain engineering on the nanoscale was designed in relaxor ferroelectrics, which effectively improved the energy storage performance. Our study provides a feasible guideline to develop lead-free ceramics for electrical energy storage applications.

Abstract:Relaxor ferroelectric thin films, that demonstrate high energy storage performances due to their slim polarization–electric field hysteresis loops, have attracted extensive attentions in the application of miniaturized advanced pulsed power electronic systems. However, the ubiquitous defects induced in the thin films, for example, due to the volatilization of cations, limit the energy storage performance to a great extent due to the reduced breakdown strength. Here, the shallow trap defects, but not the oxygen vacancy, in 0.9Sr0.7Bi0.2TiO3-0.1BaTiO3 (SBT-BT) relaxor ferroelectric thin films are effectively suppressed by the Mn doping. Abstract:Development of lead-free dielectric capacitors with high recoverable energy storage density (W rec), large energy storage efficiency (η), and wide usage temperature range are in high demanded for pulse power systems. Herein, we realized the enhancement of energy storage properties [high W rec = 3.76 J/cm3, large η = 78.80 %, and broad operating temperature range (20−180 °C)] in lead-free Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (BNT)-based relaxor ferroelectrics via component regulation. Excellent energy storage properties mainly originate from suppressing early polarization saturation and improving dielectric breakdown strength (E b). Domain evolution on the nanoscale offers robust support to suppression of early polarization saturation. The enhancement of E b can be derived from the contribution of the Mg-rich phase, which is also corroborative via first-principles calculation on basis of density functional theory (DFT). We believe that these findings in this work may provide a practicable guideline to build new lead-free ceramics for electrical energy storage applications.

Abstract:The utilization of relaxor ferroelectrics is thought to be a feasible approach to enhance energy storage performance due to the low remnant polarizations and slim hysteresis. Herein, environment-friendly (1-x)(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-xSr(Ti0.5Zr0.5)O3 bulk ceramics have been developed, where the synergistic effect of enhanced relaxor-ferroelectricity and grain refinement with increasing x value boosts excellent energy storage performance, with impressive energy density (W rec) of 4.2 J/cm3 accompanied by satisfactory energy efficiency (η) of 75.1%. Together with high thermal stability of the energy storage density of 2.0–2.1 J/cm3 (with minimal variation of ≤ ±5%) over 25–150 °C at 150.0 kV/cm due to the enhancement of thermal insensitivity, which is evidenced by simulation based on thermal conduction model. Additionally, an extraordinary fast discharge rate (t 0.9) of 54.6 ns and a high power density (P d) of 35.4 MW/cm3 can be achieved in the x = 0.20 ceramic sample. This discovery provides new opportunities to lead-free dielectric materials with a high energy density and efficiency for capacitive electrical energy storage.

Abstract:A series of (1−x)BaTiO3−xBi(Zn0.5Zr0.5)O3 (x = 0–0.15) ceramics were synthesized using the conventional solid-state method. An ultrahigh recoverable energy storage density of 3.58 J/cm3 and a high energy efficiency of 90% are obtained for 0.85BaTiO3–0.15Bi(Zn0.5Zr0.5)O3 lead-free bulk ceramics under an electric field of 430 kV/cm; the energy storage density is thus enhanced by a factor of a ∼ 895% compared with that of the pure BT ceramics. Furthermore, an excellent temperature stability is obtained, with changes in the energy storage density and efficiency <5% and <0.1%, respectively, over the temperature range of 30 °C – 120 °C. These ergodic relaxor ferroelectric characteristics are attributed to the reduced grain size, the transition from the tetragonal phase to the pseudo-cubic phase, and the transformation of the domain structure from macro domains to polar nanoregions. This work provides a lead-free material for realizing high-temperature capacitors for use in energy storage devices.

Abstract:Barium titanate (BaTiO3, BT) is widely used in capacitors because of its excellent dielectric properties. However, owing to its high remanent polarisation (P r) and low dielectric breakdown field strength (E b), achievement of high energy storage performance is challenging. Herein, a systematic strategy was proposed to reduce P r and elevate E b of BT via: (i) modification of the relaxor behavior by alloying it with Bi(Mg2/3Ta1/3)O3 (BMT) and (ii) heightening E b by introducing NaTaO3 (NT) with high band gap. Consequently, the energy storage efficiency (η) of 90 % and high E b of 780 kV cm−1 were achieved simultaneously for the BT-BMT-xNT system, which facilitated the recoverable energy density (W rec) of 6.02 J cm−3. At 300 kV cm−1, its temperature (20–120 °C) and frequency (1–500 Hz) stabilities were found to be good. Moreover, the BT-BMT-0.15NT possessed ultrafast discharge rate (t 0.9 < 51 ns) and ultrahigh power density (P D > 94 MW cm−3). This study offers an effective strategy for the design of novel high-performance dielectric energy storage materials.

Abstract:Dielectric capacitors have been widely used in pulsed power devices owing to their ultrahigh power density, fast charge/discharge speed, and excellent stability. However, developing lead-free dielectric materials with a combination of high recoverable energy storage density and efficiency remains a challenge. Herein, a high energy storage density of 7.04 J/cm 3 as well as a high efficiency of 80.5% is realized in the antiferroelectric Ag(Nb 0.85 Ta 0.15 )O 3 -modified BiFeO 3 -BaTiO 3 ferroelectric ceramic. This achievement is mainly attributed to the combined effect of a high saturation polarization ( P max ), increased breakdown field ( E b ), and reduction of the remnant polarization ( P r ). The modification of pseudotetragonal BiFeO 3 by Ag(Nb 0.85 Ta 0.15 )O 3 leads to a high P max , and the enhanced relaxor behavior gives rise to a small P r . The promoted microstructure (such as a dense structure, fine grains, and compact grain boundaries) after modification results in a high breakdown strength. Furthermore, both the recoverable energy density and efficiency exhibit high stability over a broad range of operating frequencies (1-50 Hz) and working temperatures (25-120 degrees C). These results suggest that the (0.67- x ) BiFeO 3 -0.33BaTiO 3 - x Ag(Nb 0.85 Ta 0.15 )O 3 ceramics can be highly competitive as a lead-free relaxor for energy storage applications. Novel barium zirconate titanate-based lead-free ceramics with stably high energy storage performance over a broad temperature and frequency range

Abstract:Lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics with high recoverable energy storage density and energy storage efficiency over a broad temperature and frequency range are attractive for pulsed power capacitor applications. In this work, novel barium zirconate titanate-based lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics are designed via introduction of Bi(Zn0.5Sn0.5)O3 with heterovalent ion substitution at both A- and B-sites which could disrupt long-range order, induce polar nanoregions (PNRs), and reduce remnant polarization (Pr). The (1 − x)Ba(Zr0.15Ti0.85)O3–xBi(Zn0.5Sn0.5)O3 ((1 − x)BZT–xBZS) (x = 0.02, 0.06, 0.10, and 0.14) ceramics were prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction method. In addition, the structure, dielectric, ferroelectric, and energy storage properties of (1 − x)BZT–xBZS ceramics were systematically studied. All (1 − x)BZT–xBZS ceramics exhibited pure perovskite structure. With the increase of BZS content, the relaxor ferroelectric feature of (1 − x)BZT–xBZS ceramics tended to increase gradually, and slim linear P–E loops were obtained in x = 0.10–0.14. A high recoverable energy storage density Wrec of 2.16 J/cm3 and a high energy storage efficiency η of 90.3% were simultaneously achieved in x = 0.10 at 250 kV/cm, together with excellent temperature and frequency stability, which were superior to those of the reported barium zirconate titanate-based ceramics. Our work provides an effective strategy to optimize the energy storage performance of lead-free barium zirconate titanate-based ceramics toward practical applications.

Abstract:The 0.63(1-x)Bi1.02FeO3-0.37BaTiO3-xBi(Zn2/3(Nb0.85Ta0.15)1/3)O3 (abbreviated BF-BT-xBZNT) high temperature dielectric ceramics were prepared via a two-step sintering (TTS) method. The appropriate medium permittivity achieved in the BF-BT-0.13BZNT ceramic is conducive to mitigating the polarization saturation and improving the breakdown field strength. The domain evolution behavior from piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) reveals that the introduction of BZNT promotes the formation and switching of more nanodomains of BF-BT ceramics, facilitating the enhancement of energy storage efficiency. The excellent energy storage performance of total energy storage density (Wtot) of 6.06 J/cm3, recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) of 4.85 J/cm3 and a high energy storage efficiency (η) of 80% are simultaneously obtained under 410 kV/cm in the BF-BT-0.13BZNT ceramic. Meanwhile, the ceramic exhibits excellent thermal endurance (10–130 °C), frequency (1–100 Hz) and fatigue (105 cycles) stability. The current work provides a promising strategy for designing high-performance dielectric energy storage materials which operate in harsh environments.

Abstract:In this work, Mn-doped 0.9BaTiO3-0.1Bi(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3 ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method, and the effect of defect dipoles on energy storage properties of lead free relaxor ferroelectric BaTiO3-based ceramics was studied. The crystal structure, dielectric properties, and energy storage properties were explored in detail. It was found that polarization hysteresis (P-E) loops of 0.9BaTiO3-0.1Bi(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-x wt. % MnCO3 (0.2–0.5) ceramics took on high maximum polarization (Pmax) and low remanent polarization (Pr). Meanwhile, recoverable energy density (Wrec) and energy conversion efficiency (η) were obviously enhanced by inducing defect dipoles into BaTiO3-Bi(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3 relaxor ferroelectrics. The 0.9BaTiO3-0.1Bi(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-0.3 wt. % MnCO3 ceramic was found to exhibit good energy storage properties with a Wrec of about 1.70 J/cm3 and a η ∼ 90% under an electric field of 210 kV/cm. The breakdown electric field and Wrec of BaTiO3-based materials were significantly increased in the present work, and they might be good candidates for high power energy storage applications.

Abstract:Currently, lead-free ferroelectrics have been paid much attention due to their versatile applications, environ-mental friendliness and excellent energy storage properties (ESP). In this work, lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics (0.74-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-0.06BaTiO3-0.2SrTiO3-xBi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3 with superior ESP were successfully designed via compositional tailoring and bandgap engineering. A new peak was observed in the dielectric properties, corresponding to the phase transition from the R3c polar nano regions (PNRs) to the P4bm PNRs, which were consistent with the Rietveld refined XRD and TEM SAED analyses, in which superlattice spots for R3c and P4bm were observed. A recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) of 6.57 J/cm3 and an energy conversion efficiency of 88.6% were procured for ceramics with x = 0.16 at 355 kV/cm. Furthermore, a variation within 5% in Wrec was obtained over a wide temperature and frequency range. Moreover, a power density of 77.39 MW/cm3 and a discharge speed of 52.5 ns were also achieved at 180 kV/cm.

Abstract:Relaxor ferroelectrics (RFEs) with superior energy storage properties are the commonly selected materials for energy storage capacitors. In this work, a relaxor end-member of Bi(Mg0.5Sn0.5)O3 (BMS) was introduced into ferroelectric (FE) Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) ceramics, which remarkably inhibited grain growth and triggered a FE-to-RFE phase transition, as well as improved breakdown strength. An ultrahigh energy efficiency (η) of 97.6% with a high recoverable energy density (W rec) of 1.703 J/cm3, and excellent temperature stability (30–130 °C) have been achieved in (1-x)Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3-xBi(Mg0.5Sn0.5)O3 with x = 0.08 (BCZT-BMS8) ceramic, which is mainly due to the slim P-E loop and enhanced breakdown strength. It should be noted that the ultrahigh η of 97.6% for BCZT-BMS8 is quite attractive for further applications. Abstract:Owing to the high power density, excellent operational stability and fast charge/discharge rate, and environmental friendliness, the lead-free Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT)-based relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit great potential in pulsed power capacitors. Herein, novel lead-free (1-x)(0.7Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-0.3Sr0.7Bi0.2TiO3)-xBi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3 (NBT-SBT-xBMZ) relaxor ferroelectric ceramics were successfully fabricated using a solid-state reaction method and designed via compositional tailoring. The microstructure, dielectric properties, ferroelectric properties, and energy storage performance were investigated. The results indicate that appropriate Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3 content can effectively enhance the relaxor ferroelectric characteristics and improve the dielectric breakdown strength by forming fine grain sizes and diminishing oxygen vacancy concentrations. Therefore, the optimal Wrec of 6.75 J/cm3 and a η of 79.44% were simultaneously obtained in NBT-SBT-0.15BMZ at 20 °C and 385 kV/cm. Meanwhile, thermal stability (20-180 °C) and frequency stability (1-200 Hz) associated with the ultrafast discharge time of ~49.1 ns were also procured in the same composition, providing a promising material system for applications in power pulse devices.

Abstract:BaTiO3-based lead-free ceramics are mainstays of electrical functional materials in industry with mature tech-nology and relatively low cost. However, the huge challenge of low recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) has long restricted their development in solid-state energy storage capacitors. Here, an ultrahigh Wrec of-9.04 J cm-3 and a large efficiency (eta) of-87.2% are realized in BaTiO3-based relaxor ceramics via designing hetero-structure formed by coexisting rhombohedral-tetragonal multiphase ergodic polar nanoregions. Encouragingly, outstanding mechanical properties (Vickers hardness-9.7 Gpa, compressive strength-500 MPa) are also achieved and the structural correlation between the energy storage and mechanical properties has been estab-lished, which are linked to the synergistic mechanisms of solid solution strengthening, denseness strengthening, grain boundary strengthening, and twin boundary strengthening. It is particular significance that this work provides an effective strategy to design new high-performance dielectric materials, accelerating the development of BaTiO3-based lead-free capacitors used in advanced energy-storage devices.

Abstract:Lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics are attracting attention due to their fast charge/discharge and environmentally friendly properties. In this work, the bismuth sodium titanate-barium titanate-barium zirconate titanate [(0.94Bi 0 · 51 Na 0 · 47 TiO 3 -0.06BaTiO 3 ) -x BaZr 0.3 Ti 0 · 7 O 3 , abbreviated as BNBT-100 x BZT] relaxor ferroelectric ceramics were synthesized by the solid-state reaction technique. The microstructure, energy storage properties, and conductivity mechanism of BNBT-100 x BZT were analyzed as the barium zirconate titanate doping content changed. All BNBT-100 x BZT have a single perovskite structure by XRD. The BNBT-5BZT ceramics was found to be tetragonal by Rietveld refinement. Moreover, the doping of BZT is beneficial to optimize the breakdown strength (BDS). Owing to the higher BDS, an effective energy storage density of 1.457 J/cm 3 was obtained under 122 kV/cm in BNBT-5BZT with an energy storage efficiency ( η ) of 81.9%. In addition, BNBT-5BZT has outstanding temperature and cycling stability. The results indicate that BNBT-5BZT ceramics is excellent candidates for energy storage devices.

Abstract:Dielectric energy-storage ceramic materials with fast charging and discharging times and high reliability have almost irreplaceable applications in fields such as high-energy pulsed-power technology. To mitigate the environmental pollution caused by lead-containing dielectric energy-storage ceramics, lead-free dielectric energy-storage materials have become the focus of current research. In this work, BaTiO 3 -Bi(Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 (BT-BZT) was combined with (Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 ) 0.7 Sr 0.3 TiO 3 (BNST) to fabricate (1- x )(0.9BT-0.1BZT)- x BNST solid solutions ( x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) via conventional solid-state reaction methods. Through reasonable component optimization, a high recoverable energy-storage density ( W rec ) of 3.5 J/cm 3 and large efficiency ( η ) of 90.8% were achieved in the sample with BNST concentration of x = 0.15. Meanwhile, the sample exhibited an ultrafast discharge time of ~ 53.0 ns over the range of ambient temperature to 120 °C. This exceptional energy-storage performance indicates that the 0.85(0.9BT-0.1BZT)-0.15BNST ceramic is a promising candidate for the dielectric energy storage in a high-power pulse capacitor.
