Abstract:We have fabricated small core polysilicon waveguides by tapering bulk, as-drawn silicon optical fibers. The taper process acts to improve the local crystallinity of the core, resulting in a significant reduction in the material loss.

Abstract:Subwavelength- and nanometer-diameter glass nanofibers have been fabricated using a high-temperature taper-drawing process. As-drawn nanofibers show extraordinary uniformities in terms of diameter variation and surface roughness and are suitable for single-mode optical wave guiding. Measured optical losses of these nanofibers are typically below 0.1dB/mm. Photonic devices such as linear waveguides, optical couplers and microrings assembled with nanofibers are also demonstrated. Our results show that taper-drawn glass nanofibers are promising building blocks for micro- and nano-scale photonic devices.

Abstract:A silicon-on-insulator-based adiabatic waveguide taper with a high coupling efficiency and small footprint is presented. The taper was designed to reduce the incidence of mode conversion to higher-order and radiation modes inside the waveguide. In connecting a 0.5-mu m-wide output waveguide and a 12-mu m-wide input waveguide of a grating coupler, a compact 120-mu m-long taper was demonstrated, achieving a transmission of 98.3%. Abstract:This article proposes a novel demonstration of a low-loss polymer channel hybridized with a titania core leading to a nano-waveguide elongated in the normal direction to the substrate. It is aimed at using the quasi-transverse magnetic (TM) mode as the predominant mode in compact photonic circuitry. A detailed design analysis shows how a thin layer of a higher-refractive index material in a trench within the core of the waveguide can increase the confinement and reduce the propagation losses. This thin layer, produced by atomic layer deposition, covers the entire polymer structure in a conformal manner, ensuring both a reduction of the surface roughness and a stronger field confinement. The trench can be made at any place within the polymer channel and therefore its position can be tuned to obtain asymmetric modal distribution. The waveguide is demonstrated at telecom wavelengths, although the material's properties enable operation over a large part of the electromagnetic spectrum. We measured propagation losses as low as 1.75 ± 0.32 dB/cm in a 200 nm × 900 nm section of the waveguide core. All processes being mass-production compatible, this study opens a path towards easier integrated-component manufacture.

Abstract:Silica taper incorporated polymer micro or nanofibers have been fabricated by direct drawing. This method could provide stable and high-optical-coupling efficiency. The as-fabricated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) fibers not only show low-optical losses, but also offer good flexibility, making them promising elements for sharp-bending waveguides and ring resonators. A low-loss microcoupler has been assembled with two 860-nm diameter PMMA fibers and a polymeric knot resonator with a loaded Q-factor of about 3000 has been assembled using a 3-mu m-diameter PMMA microfiber. Abstract:An ultra-low-loss coupler for interfacing a silicon-on-insulator ridge waveguide and a single-mode fiber in both polarizations is presented. The inverted taper coupler, embedded in a polymer waveguide, is optimized for both the transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes through tapering the width of the silicon-on-insulator waveguide from 450nm down to less than 15nm applying a thermal oxidation process. Two inverted taper couplers are integrated with a 3-mm long silicon-on-insulator ridge waveguide in the fabricated sample. The measured coupling losses of the inverted taper coupler for transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes are ∼0.36dB and ∼0.66dB per connection, respectively.

Abstract:Edge coupler is a key component of silicon-based optoelectronic chips, which dramatically reduces the coupling loss between fibers and transmission waveguides. Here, we propose an ultralow-loss three-step silicon edge coupler based on a 130 nm CMOS process. By replacing the silicon substrate with a material with a lower refractive index than silicon oxide, the silicon leakage loss and polarization-dependent loss can be significantly improved. This structure avoids the existence of a cantilever, which enhances the mechanical strength of the edge coupler. Coupling with standard single-mode fiber, the simulation results demonstrate that the TE/TM mode has an ultralow loss of 0.63/1.08 dB at 1310 nm and 0.57/1.34 dB at 1550 nm, and the 0.5 dB bandwidth covering the entire communication band is about 400 nm. In the entire communication band, the polarization-dependent loss is less than 0.8 dB. Furthermore, we propose a taper shape design method based on mode analysis, which can be adapted for any taper to improve its compactness. Compared with the parabolic shape, the coupling loss of the edge coupler with a length of 460 μm for the TE mode is improved by 0.3 dB on average, this edge coupler provides a feasible solution for fiber-to-chip coupling and is perfectly suitable for wavelength division multiplexing applications in optical communications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel silicon photonic spiral with a tapered-Euler-S-bend. A 100-cm-long waveguide spiral is realized with a bending radius as small as 10 μm, while the measured propagation loss is as low as 0.28 dB/cm.

Abstract:A high-efficiency and large-alignment-tolerance fiber interface to silicon-on-insulator wire waveguides is introduced. A spot-size converter is built through a full three-dimensional polymer waveguide and a silicon inverse taper is employed to expand the optical mode field from a silicon sub-micro waveguide to a normal cleaved single-mode fiber with a mode size of about 10μm. The fabrication for the three-dimensional structure relies on simple spin-coating processes. The coupling loss from the fiber to the silicon waveguide through the proposed structure reaches -1.0dB for both transverse electrical and transverse magnetic modes, respectively. The polarization-dependent loss for the best coupling case is kept within -0.6dB in the whole measured wavelength range. The coupling facet of the proposed fiber interface structure is polishable and facilitates an easy package procedure with standard fiber arrays.

Abstract:We demonstrate adiabatically tapered fibers terminating in sub-micron tips that are clad with a higher-index material for coupling to an on-chip waveguide. This cladding enables coupling to a high-index waveguide without losing light to the buried oxide. A technique to clad the tip of the tapered fiber with a higher-index polymer is introduced. Conventional tapered waveguides and forked tapered waveguide structures are investigated for coupling from the clad fiber to the on-chip waveguide. We find the forked waveguide facilitates alignment and packaging, while the conventional taper leads to higher bandwidth. The insertion loss from a fiber through a forked coupler to a sub-micron silicon nitride waveguide is 1.1 dB and the 3 dB-bandwidth is 90 nm. The coupling loss in the packaged device is 1.3 dB. With a fiber coupled to a conventional tapered waveguide, the loss is 1.4 dB with a 3 dB bandwidth extending beyond the range of the measurement apparatus, estimated to exceed 250 nm.

Abstract:Abstract Optical-fiber-based, hollow-core waveguides (HCWs) have opened up many new applications in laser surgery, gas sensors, and non-linear optics. Chip-scale HCWs are desirable because they are compact, light-weight and can be integrated with other devices into systems-on-a-chip. However, their progress has been hindered by the lack of a low loss waveguide architecture. Here, a completely new waveguiding concept is demonstrated using two planar, parallel, silicon-on-insulator wafers with high-contrast subwavelength gratings to reflect light in-between. We report a record low optical loss of 0.37 dB/cm for a 9-μm waveguide, mode-matched to a single mode fiber. Two-dimensional light confinement is experimentally realized without sidewalls in the HCWs, which is promising for ultrafast sensing response with nearly instantaneous flow of gases or fluids. This unique waveguide geometry establishes an entirely new scheme for low-cost chip-scale sensor arrays and lab-on-a-chip applications.

Abstract:We report here the low-loss double-end coupling of an anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF) with a solid-core single-mode fiber by the fiber tapering technique for the first time. The double-end coupling model is established by the beam propagation method, and the various influences, such as those of insertion depth, tapered waist offset, tapered waist bending, etc, on the coupling efficiency are simulated in detail. Results show that the coupling efficiency can be optimized by choosing proper waist diameters of the tapered solid-core fibers at both ends; meanwhile, the output taped fiber must be inserted into the proper depth. The calculated maximum coupling efficiency is 70.8% for AR-HCF of the core diameter 46 μ m at the 1.5 μ m band, and the measured value is ~52.3%, which is hoped to be further increased by improving the performance of the tapered fibers and the coupling system. This work opens new opportunities for all-fiber structured gas lasers, which is very significant for its future applications.

Abstract:Abstract While optical fibers display excellent performances in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet ranges remain poorly addressed by them. Obtaining better fibers for the short-wavelength range has been restricted, in all fiber optics, by scattering processes. In hollow-core fibers, the scattering loss arises from the core roughness and represents the limiting factor for loss reduction regardless of the cladding confinement power. Here, we report on the reduction of the core surface roughness of hollow-core fibers by modifying their fabrication technique. The effect of the modified process has been quantified and the results showed a root-mean-square surface roughness reduction from 0.40 to 0.15 nm. The improvement in the core surface entailed fibers with ultralow loss at short wavelengths. The results reveal this approach as a promising path for the development of hollow-core fibers with loss that can potentially be orders of magnitude lower than the ones achievable with silica-core counterparts.

Abstract:A new kind of cyclic olefin polymer COP-E48R has been selected as the dielectric material for a silver hollow glass tube. Owing to its lower extinction coefficient at the wavelength of 10.6 μm, transmission losses for the CO2 laser light has been reduced significantly in the COP-E48R-coated silver (COP-E48R/Ag) hollow glass waveguide. By properly selecting the film thickness of COP, Er:YAG and CO2 laser light are shown to be transmitted with low loss simultaneously or independently. Delivery properties of red and green pilot beams were also evaluated.

Abstract:Broadband mid-infrared light sources are highly desired for wide-ranging applications that span free-space communications to spectroscopy. In recent years, silicon has attracted great interest as a platform for nonlinear optical wavelength conversion in this region, owing to its low losses (linear and nonlinear) and high stability. However, most research in this area has made use of small core waveguides fabricated from the silicon-on-insulator platform, which suffer from high absorption losses of the silica cladding, limiting their ability to generate light beyond 3 ${\mu}$m. Here we design and demonstrate a compact silicon core, silica clad waveguide platform that has low losses across the entire silicon transparency window. The waveguides are fabricated from a silicon core fibre that has been tapered to engineer the mode properties to ensure efficient nonlinear propagation in the core with minimal interaction of the mid-infrared light with the cladding. These waveguides exhibit many benefits of fibre platforms, such as high coupling efficiency and power handling capabilities, allowing for the generation of mid-infrared supercontinuum spectra with high brightness and coherence spanning almost two octaves (1.6-5.3 ${\mu}$m).

Low-loss and high stability standard single mode fiber edge couplers for silicon photonics

Abstract:Efficient optical coupling between standard single mode fibers and nanophotonic waveguides has been recognized as a major practical challenge since the early years of photonics. In this work, a low-loss and wide band edge coupler based on subwavelength gratings (SWG) for standard single mode fibers is proposed and demonstrated on 220 nm SOI platform. The edge coupler has a minimum feature size of 130 nm and a 630-m length, which was fabricated in CUMEC’s 200 mm CMOS production facilities. The best coupling losses are 1.60 and 1.95 dB for TE and TMin1500-1600 nm wavelength range, respectively, achieving a minimum PDL of 0.2 dB at 1500 nm. Moreover, by taking advantage of SiN-on-Si integrated process and wafer bonding process, the edge coupler exhibits high process and package reliability, making it attractive for the commercial application.

Abstract:We develop an approach to tailoring the mode of a solid-core polarization-maintaining fiber, with both the reverse tapering process and the thermally expanded core technique, enlarging the mode area and reshaping the mode shape to construct a matched interface with an asymmetric antiresonant hollow-core fiber. An ultralow fusion splicing loss of 0.41 dB and a maintained polarization extinction ratio of 28 dB were demonstrated, with no additional intermediate component.

Abstract:In this work we report two designs of subwavelength fibers packaged for practical terahertz wave guiding. We describe fabrication, modeling and characterization of microstructured polymer fibers featuring a subwavelength-size core suspended in the middle of a large porous outer cladding. This design allows convenient handling of the subwavelength fibers without distorting their modal profile. Additionally, the air-tight porous cladding serves as a natural enclosure for the fiber core, thus avoiding the need for a bulky external enclosure for humidity-purged atmosphere. Fibers of 5 mm and 3 mm in outer diameters with a 150 \mu m suspended solid core and a 900 \mu m suspended porous core respectively, were obtained by utilizing a combination of drilling and stacking techniques. Characterization of the fiber optical properties and the near-field imaging of the guided modes were performed using a terahertz near-field microscopy setup. Near-field imaging of the modal profiles at the fiber output confirmed the effectively single-mode behavior of such waveguides. The suspended core fibers exhibit broadband transmission from 0.10 THz to 0.27 THz (larger core), and from 0.25 THz to 0.51 THz (smaller core). Due to the large fraction of power that is guided in the holey cladding, fiber propagation losses as low as 0.02 cm-1 are demonstrated. Low-loss guidance combined with the core isolated from environmental perturbations make these all-dielectric fibers suitable for practical terahertz imaging and sensing applications.
