Abstract:Over the past two decades silicon core fibers (SCF) have emerged as a promising platform for use in nonlinear photonic applications. By harnessing the unique optical properties of the crystalline silicon core directly within the fiber geometry, it is possible to imagine compact and low power nonlinear systems that are immediately compatible with existing fiber infrastructures. This paper reviews the recent advances in the development and application of SCFs for nonlinear optical processing and source generation. Particular focus will be placed on novel device designs that benefit from the fiber geometry and post-processing procedures that facilitate integration with existing components.

Abstract:Silicon core fibers (SCFs) offer an exciting opportunity to harness the nonlinear functionality of the semiconductor material within the excellent waveguiding properties of optical fiber systems. Over the past two decades, these fibers have evolved from a research curiosity into established components for use across a wide range of photonic applications. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the SCFs, with a focus on the development of the fabrication and post-processing procedures that have helped unlock the nonlinear optical potential of this new technology. As well as reviewing the timeline of advancements in nonlinear performance, a perspective will be provided on the current challenges and future opportunities for in-fiber nonlinear silicon systems.

Abstract:Integrated photonics has for several years included in its panoply the development of functions based on third-order non-linear optical phenomena, from the generation of supercontinuum or frequency comb sources to metrology or spectroscopy on chip applications. This natural evolution, after the development of high-speed transceivers in the last few years, particularly in silicon photonics, is based on a number of compromises and still has to solve problems, particularly concerning the integration of nonlinear materials on silicon and their exploitation. The work we present addresses two directions. The first is oriented towards the development of a supercontinuum source using Nitrogen-rich photonic circuits from an industrial CMOS platform, while the second aims at the development of hybrid highly nonlinear waveguides significantly reducing the impact of twophoton absorption in the telecom window around 1,55μm by exploiting silicon slot waveguides infiltrated by chalcogenide glasses (As2S3).

Abstract:We have fabricated small core polysilicon waveguides by tapering bulk, as-drawn silicon optical fibers. The taper process acts to improve the local crystallinity of the core, resulting in a significant reduction in the material loss.

Abstract:Fabrication errors inevitably occur in device manufacturing owing to the limited processing accuracy of commercial silicon photonic processes. For silicon photonic devices, which are mostly processing-sensitive, their performances usually deteriorate significantly. This remains an unsolved issue for mass production, particularly for passive devices, because they cannot be adjusted once fixed in processes. This study presents a post-processing trimming method to compensate for fabrication errors by changing the cladding equivalent refractive indices of devices with femtosecond lasers. The experimental results show that the resonant wavelengths of micro-ring resonators can be regularly shifted within their free spectral range via tuning the illuminating area, focusing position, emitting power, and scanning speed of the trimming femtosecond laser with an acceptable loss increase. These experiments, as well as the trimming experiments in improving the phase balance of Mach-Zehnder interferometer switches, indicate that the femtosecond laser trimming method is an effective and fast method for silicon photonic devices.

Abstract:In the silicon-based devices, the third-order nonlinear effects containing Kerr effects, two-photon absorption (TPA), free carrier absorption (FCA) and free carrier dispersion (FCD) play the important role in the physical characteristics. In this paper, taking consideration of the linear and nonlinear effects, a comprehensive numerical analysis model based on the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method is built and demonstrated. The nonlinear characteristics of the silicon-based waveguides and micro ring resonators are further discussed in the simulated results. The proposed model might provide an effective analysis method for all silicon-based devices, due to its good compatibility and accuracy.

Abstract:The third order optical nonlinearity in 1-d conducting polymers are investigated with a simple model. The relevant physical effects on the nonlinear polarization are analysed. For third harmonic generation our result is in good accordance with the experiment of prestine polyacetylene.

Abstract:There are new nonlinear characteristics when fiber doped with semiconductor nano-clusters. The refractive index of fiber core can be effectively changed by doping. This technology can provide a new method to develop photon, components. Because the semiconductor nano-cluster has quantum characteristics, Based on first-order perturbation theory and classical theory of fiber, we educe the refractive index expressions of fiber core which is doped with semiconductor nano-cluster. Finally, the third-order nonlinear coefficient equation is gained. Using this equation, we calculate the SMF-28 fiber nonlinear coefficient which is corresponded to the actual value. The equation shows that new third order coefficient is greater than before.

Abstract:Typical electro-optic polymers are characterized by second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores arranged polar-asymmetrically in an amorphous polymer matrix. It is believed that the electro-optic activity of workhorse NLO chromophores (e.g., DANS and Disperse Red) are of insufficient magnitude to be viable candidates for commercial device-quality materials.1 Consequently, much effort has been directed in the past few years toward the development of chromophores with device-quality magnitudes of molecular optical nonlinearities. Unfortunately, the translation of these so-called high-β chromophores to the expected bulk electro-optic activities in polymers generally has not been achieved. Recently, we have shown that this lack of electro-optic activity is due primarily to strong intermolecular electrostatic interactions between chromophores, which tend to align the chromophores in an antiparallel fashion, resulting in no net polar asymmetry in the bulk material.2,3
