Abstract:The third order optical nonlinearity in 1-d conducting polymers are investigated with a simple model. The relevant physical effects on the nonlinear polarization are analysed. For third harmonic generation our result is in good accordance with the experiment of prestine polyacetylene.

Abstract:The ground-and the excited-state nonlinearities of two new copolymers are investigated in nanosecond scale at 1064 nm. It is found that the excited-state susceptibility is dramatically larger than the corresponding groundstate susceptibility for each sample. The experimental results also give evidence that superlattice structure of the copolymers can enhance, especially for the excited state, the molecular hyperpolarizabilities significantly. This enhancement may be attributed to the confinement effect of the pump-induced carriers.

Abstract:A new series of poly(p-diethynylbenzene) derivatives with trans structure and long-conjugation side chains were synthesized. These polymers possess good solubility and thermal stability. The maximum absorptions and band gaps depend on the nature and number of the substituents. Third-order nonlinear optical properties of these polymers were characterized with second-order hyperpolarizability as large as ≈10–30 esu in the non-resonant region.

Abstract:By using the Genkin-Mednis approach, we get an exact expression of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of conducting polymers, from which we find that: (1) the cusp at h-omega = DELTA is not truely existence in the real materials; (2) each transition between inside-band electronic states will induce both a two- and a three-photon resonances once the conjugated length is finite; and (3) the third-harmonic generation of the system with a random distribution of conjugated lengths obtained agrees quite well with the experimental data of trans-polyacetylene.

Abstract:A photo-cross-linked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone. The characterization of the polymer was done by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectra, ultraviolet spectra and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. The electro-optic film was obtained by spin-coating and corona poling then photo-cross-linked. The film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. An electro-optic measuring system was established based on this film. The results showed that the film has a linear electro-optic characteristic and the voltage sensitivity was higher than that of a GaAs probe.

Abstract:The third-order nonlinear optical properties of a series of polythiophenes are investigated with the Z-scan method under picosecond pulse laser irradiation at 532 nm. The copolymers exhibit a good nonlinear response: large nonlinear refraction coefficients without nonlinear absorption. The signs of nonlinear refraction coefficients are positive, which are opposite to the negative signs of the polythiophene reported before. The mechanism accounting for the process of nonlinear refraction under pulse laser excitation is analyzed from the viewpoint of the electron-donor/acceptor units of polythiophenes. Moreover, changes of nonlinearity according to the lengths of main chains in polythiophene molecules are discussed.

Abstract:A photo-crosslinked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The characterization of the polymer was made by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-vis, and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. An electro-optic film was obtained by spin coating of the polymer and corona poling then photo-crosslinking reaction. An external electro-optic measurement system was established based on the film and reflective light path configuration, and successfully applied to measure the electrical signals propagating on the under-test circuits. The poled and crosslinked film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. The measuring principle was analyzed by electro-optic tensor matrix and index ellipsoid methods. The results showed that the designed polymer film had the linear electro-optic effect, the voltage sensitivity of the system was measured to be 5 mv/ at the condition of 1 kHz input signal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been noncovalently modified with poly[2-methoxy 5-octyoxy]-p-phenylene vinylene (MO-PPV) to form a series of solution of MWCNTs and the conjugated polymers. The third-order nonlinearities of the solutions were investigated by the optical Kerr effect technique with femtosecond pulses, and degenerate four-wave mixing, open aperture, and closed aperture Z-scan techniques with nanosecond pulses. We attempted to quantify the contributions from various channels including the real and imaginary parts, the dynamic carriers, two-photon absorption, and thermal effect. The MO-PPV/MWCNTs composites showed much larger third-order nonlinearities than the pristine polymers. The enhanced optical nonlinearities were attributed to the strong interaction between the pi-pi electrons of MO-PPV and MWCNTs in their photoexcited state. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:By means of homogeneous stepwise condensation method, both the Ni-polyyne copolymers with PPh(3) and PBu(3) ligands, and modified pi-conjugated nickel-containing copolymers have been synthesized and confirmed by infrared (IR) analysis. The Ni-polyyne copolymers obtained are yellow powder having a (M) over bar(w), of about 1 similar to 2 x 10(4) and a molecular weight distribution (MWD) of less than 3, and they are soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl(3), and toluene. Their third-order nonlinear optical properties have been investigated by a degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique. The effect of the nature of the ligands attached to the nickel atoms, the structure, and the length of pi-conjugation between the 2 metal centers in the main chain on the hyperpolarizability gamma of the Ni-polyyne polymers have been discussed. The maximum susceptibility chi((3)) and hyperpolarizability gamma of the Ni-polyyne polymers reach 5.17 x 10(-12) and 2.30 x 10(-30) esu, respectively. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:The static and dynamic second hyperpolarizability tensors of oligomers of polyacetylene, polyparaphenylene vinylene, and polythienylene vinylene are evaluated by means of the valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) method. The sum-over-states (SOS) approach is exploited, by constructing excited states from both single- and double-electron excitations. The ab initio coupled perturbed Hartree-Fock method is also applied in the case of small representative molecules such as benzene, thiophene, styrene, and thienylethylene in order to test the validity of the VEH-SOS approach. The VEH-SOS results are found to be comparable with the ab initio results. The length dependence of the static hyperpolarizability is analyzed and found to scale with the optical gap evolution of the different oligomers. The dynamic properties are presented in terms of third-harmonic generation and the dc Kerr effect.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity at a wavelength of 1.064 μm has been studied in a range of soluble conjugated organic polymers using the technique of degenerate forward four-wave mixing. This technique enables determination of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility | χ (3) | of the material. In all cases, determination of the response time of the material nonlinearity is limited by the experimental resolution (≈ 70 ps). Measurements of | χ (3) | as a function of polymer solution concentration were performed and contributions from both real and imaginary components were observed and estimated. The origin of the imaginary contribution in these ‘off-resonant’ conditions was investigated by intensity-dependent measurements of the four-wave mixing signal. In solutions of poly-3 and -4(butoxycarbonylmethylurethane diacetylene), (BCMU) in both chloroform and chlorobenzene, a dependence characteristic of a fifth-order nonlinear interaction is observed. Furthermore, in chloroform solutions of poly(3-butylthiophene) a seventh-order nonlinearity is observed. These high-order nonlinearities are associated with two-photon and three-photon resonant enhancement of the four-photon process and are characterized by fifth- and seventh-order susceptibilities, χ (5) and χ (7) respectively. The presence of imaginary contributions to the optical nonlinearity in all materials investigated implies that this nonlinearity is dominated in all cases by the nearest resonance. This conclusions renders redundant such simplistic models as the free-electron model.

Abstract:Poly (3, 4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films with smooth surface were deposited on Indium-doped Tin Oxide glass (ITO) electrodes using galvanostatic electropolymerization in propylene carbonate solvent. Their nonlinear optical properties were investigated by Z-scan technique at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index n2 and the third-order susceptibility χ (3) are -3.09×10-6 esu and 6.90×10-7 esu, respectively. The results indicate that the electropolymerized PEDOT films on ITO are promising materials for nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:By use of the Genkin-Mednis approach, a general formalism of the nonlinear optical susceptibilities has been derived for one-dimensional electron-lattice systems. Based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we get an analytic expression of the third-harmonic generation ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$(\ensuremath{\omega}) of conducting polymers. After considering the effects of finite lifetime of the excited states, the cusp at \ensuremath{\Elzxh}\ensuremath{\omega}=\ensuremath{\Delta} is greatly depressed so that it becomes too small to interpret the observed peak of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$(\ensuremath{\omega}) at 0.9 eV. The case of nondegenerate polymers and the effect of electron-electron interaction in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation are also discussed. Our results imply that the electron interaction would play an important role in the nonlinear optical properties of conducting polymers.

Abstract:A series of 10 new poly(heteroarylene methylenes) containing one pyrrole or thiophene ring alternating with a carbon atom in the main chain were synthesized and characterized. The polymers which were synthesized in the air were found to be partially dehydrogenated by the oxygen, that is, the bridge carbon atoms between pyrrole or thiophene rings were partially sp(3) atoms and partially sp(2) atoms. However the polymers which were synthesized in the flowing nitrogen atmosphere were found to be deoxidized, that is the bridge atoms were sp(3) atoms. The deoxidized polymers could be oxidatively dehydrogenated with tetrchlorobenzoquinone. These polymers are useful model systems to investigate the effect of conjugation length on the electronic and optical properties of conjugated polymers. Third-order optical non-linearities of the resulting polymers were studied by z-scan techniques. The results show that the resulting polymers exhibited large third-order optical non-linear susceptibilities as large as 10(-8) esu. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The third-order nonlinearity of a low-bandgap conjugated organic polymer has been assessed. Degenerate four-wave mixing experiments (at 1.064 mum using picosecond pulses from a passively mode-locked neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser) on solutions of the polymer have permitted the determination of the microscopic third-order nonlinearity gamma. The polymer exhibits unusual behaviour which is solution concentration dependent. This behaviour is thought to be due to aggregation effects and strongly suggests that the bulk response of the material is large, the third-order nonlinearity being of the order of ten times greater than that of polythiophene.Following preliminary studies, a sample of the same polymer with a greater average molecular weight was also measured and was found, within an order of magnitude, to possess the same third-order nonlinearity.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical properties of a soluble and �� electron conjugated organic polymer: poly (2.5 dialkoxyphenylene) (abbreviated to PPP) were studied by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) at 532 nm and 1064 nm. The third-order nonlinear optical coefficient and nonlinear refractive were measured, and the figure of merit was discussed to point out the suitable wavelength for PPP practical application.

Abstract:The femtosecond optical heterodyne detected optical Kerr effect is described in detail. The real and the imaginary parts of complex third-order optical nonlinearity can be effectively separated and their values and signs can be determined. Using this method, we thoroughly investigated the substitution effect by adding different side-groups on the –(–C=N–)– conjugated system, a new class of nonlinear optical material. We discussed the improvement in their third-order susceptibilities. And we found the value of second-order hyperpolarizability depends on the polymerization degree, but the relationship is different for different substituted polymers.
Off-Resonant Nonlinear Optical Properties of Conjugated Organic Polymers - Origins and Nature

Abstract:Results of a series of nonlinear optical studies of organic conjugated systems are reported and discussed with a view towards deriving an understanding of the origins and nature of the near infrared nonlinear optical properties of organic conjugated polymers. Measurements were made in solution by the method of self-diffraction from laser induced gratings at a wavelength of 1.064 micrometers . In a series of enyne oligomers, concentration dependences of the diffraction efficiencies show large contributions from imaginary components of the nonlinear susceptibilities. The origins of these imaginary components are linked to the nature of the response of 1D conjugated systems to a perturbation of the electronic configuration in the form of electron-lattice interaction. The role of the influence of such interactions in limiting the nonlinear optical response of polymers is discussed. In a range of polymeric systems, intensity dependences of the diffraction efficiencies reveal the strong influence of the multiphoton resonant enhancement of the nonlinearity. In three polymers, exhibiting strong similarities in linear optical properties, a striking variation of the order of the nonlinear optical susceptibilities at the wavelength studied is observed, originating in differing distributions of multiphoton states. The positioning of these states is largely determined by electron correlation interactions and the strength of these interactions are discussed in terms of monomeric structure. Finally the inclusion of electron rich species in the polymeric backbone is investigated and studies of metal containing organic species are reported.

Abstract:Femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr effect technique has been used to investigate the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of conjugated polymers consisting of fluorene and/or tetraphenyldiaminobiphenyl (TPD) units designed to elucidate structure-property relationships for the microscopic second-order hyperpolarizability gamma in polymeric materials. The gamma per repeated unit of the series of polymers has off-resonant values at 830 nm in the range of 2.0 x 10-(33)-2.4 x 10(-31) esu, demonstrating a large modulation of nonlinear optical response by simple structural variations. The gamma values of alternative copolymers containing fluorene and TPD moieties are 2 orders of magnitude higher than the gamma value of the homopolymer polyfluorene, revealing the vital role of the strong electron donor TPD in the NLO enhancement. The fluorene segment was found to result in 4-fold enhancement of gamma in TPD-containing copolymers compared to p-phenylenevinylene segment, indicating that the planar rigid ring of fluorene is an efficient third-order NLO chromophore. No relationship between the magnitude of gamma and the optical band gap was found. The large variation of gamma value with molecular structure of these polymers can be explained by molecular exciton theory other than the band theory.

Abstract:Polyaniline are promising molecules which present very attractive properties for nonlinear optical applications. The nonlinear optical properties of polyaniline composite materials(PANI/SiO(2)) were studied using the single beam Z-scan technique. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (beta) and nonlinear refractive index (n(2)) was retrieved by fitting experimental data. These molecules exhibit a strong reverse saturable absorption and an interesting optical limiting performance with a nanosecond Nd: YAG laser pulses at 532 nm.

Abstract:We have calculated the full spectrum of the third-order optical susceptibility, chi(3)(-3-omega;omega,omega,omega) in long oligomers of polyacetylene and polyparaphenylene vinylene, in tbc framework of a simple one-electron tight-binding approach. All doubly excited states are explicitly included in a sum-over-states formulation. The damping factors associated with resonances with excited states are modulated as a function of excited-state energy. Both the length dependence and the dynamic behavior of chi(3)(-3-omega;omega,omega,omega) are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. Our results thus show that, contrary to the situation in very short polyenes, a one-electron theory can provide an accurate description of the nonlinear optical response in conjugated polymers.
