Abstract:Polycarboxylate (PCE) superplasticizers play a crucial role in preventing cement coagulation by effectively adsorbing onto the surface of cement particles, enhancing dispersibility, and maintaining dispersion performance. This study delves into the potential interaction mechanisms between PCE superplasticizers and cement particles, focusing on various adsorption effects such as electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance, extrusion emptying, wetting and lubricating, as well as bleed air isolation. Additionally, the paper comprehensively reviews recent advancements in understanding the impacts of five distinct functional groups—carboxyl, ester, siloxane, phosphate, and sulfonic groups—on the performance of PCE superplasticizers. The findings reveal that the carboxyl, siloxane, phosphate, and sulfonic groups contribute positively to the adsorption performance of PCE superplasticizers, with the optimal group density being a critical factor for enhancing overall performance. However, the presence of the ester group in PCE initially reduces the adsorption amount on cement particle surfaces. Upon later hydrolysis of the ester group, the adsorption amount gradually increases, resulting in enhanced fluidity of cement pastes. In general, this review provides a pertinent theoretical foundation and research guidance for the development of novel and highly efficient PCE superplasticizers tailored for cementitious materials.
