Abstract:A novel reactive synthesis was developed to fabricate silver copper oxide contact materials in this paper. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were adopted to analyze phase and characterize microstructure. The results showed the CuO particles were agglomerate and fine, which is good for a better AgCuO composites microstructure dispersion in the process. Specially ringed microstructure was formed, in which those fine CuO particles were distributed around Ag matrix particles which is larger in size,. The severe plastic deformation was utilized to homogenize AgCuO composites. SEM analysis results showed microstructure of severe plastic deformation AgCuO composites was uniform and CuO particles were well dispersed. Furthermore, the service life of the silver copper oxide composites as contact materials was tested, which was compared with that of other Ag matrix contact materials. The results showed that the service life of prepared AgCuO contact materials was close to that of AgSnO(2) contact materials fabricated by reactive synthesis and contain 8% SnO(2) and was approximately two times of that of AgCdO and AgCuO contact materials fabricated by powder metallurgy. Therefore, the AgCuO composites fabricated by reactive synthesis can substitute for AgCdO composites as contact materials.
