Abstract:The hydrogen storage properties and crystal structures of Ti1+xCr1.2Mn0.8(x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) and Ti1+xCr1.2Mn0.8-xMy (M=Fe, Ni, Cu, V, VFe; x=0.0, 0.1; y=0.1, 0.3) have been studied systematically. XRD patterns proved that the two series of hydrogen storage alloys have the same crystal structure, C14(MgZn2) typed Laves phase, which is suitable for hydrogen absorption and desorption with great amount. The lattice parameter a, c and cell volume V increase with increasing Ti content and substitution of Mn by Fe, Ni, Cu, V and VFe, while the hysteresis factors of P-C-T curves decrease. In order to develop hydrogen storage alloys for the metal hydride hydrogen compressor (MHHC), the effect of the substitution elements have been investigated, and the results show that both alloys, TiCr1.2Mn0.5Fe0.3 and Ti1.1Cr1.2Mn0.5Cu0.3, have high hydrogen storage capacities and high compression ratios.

Abstract:AB(2)-type Ti-based hydrogen storage alloys are considered promising candidates for the hydrogen feeding system in hydrogen-metallurgy application. In this work, Ti087Zr0.15MnxCr1.75-xV0.25 (x = 1.25-1.5), Ti087Zr015Mn15Cr0.5-y(VFe)(y) (y = 0.25-0.43) and Ti0.85+zZr0.15Mn15Cr007(VFe)(0.43) (z = 0-0.05) alloys were synthesized using induction levitation melting, where ferrovanadium VFe consists of 80 wt% V and 20 wt% Fe. Subsequently, their microstructures and hydrogen storage performances were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that all alloy samples exhibit a single C14 Laves phase structure with uniform element distribution. With the increment of Cr/Mn, VFe/Cr ratio, or Ti stoichiometry, the alloys exhibit enhanced hydrogen storage capacity, accompanied by a decrease in hydrogenation equilibrium pressure because of interstitial volume expansion or hydrogen affinity improvement, which is also supported by density functional theory calculations. Considering the application of hydrogen metallurgy, Ti086Zr015Mn15Cr007(VFe)(0.43) alloy is regarded as a promising candidate, exhibiting a saturated capacity of 2.01 wt% H-2, an effective reversible capacity of 1.91 wt% H-2, rapid hydrogenation kinetics, excellent cyclic durability and low costs. This work provides valuable insights into the compositional design of hydrogen storage alloys for the hydrogen feeding system in hydrogen metallurgy applications.
Studies of hydrogen storage properties and absorption-desorption mechanism of FeTi1.3(Mm)y alloy

Abstract:The hydrogen storage properties of FeTi1.3(Mm)y(y=0, 0.013, 0.026, 0.039, 0.052) alloys have been studied in detail. The results show that the activation characteristic of FeTi1.3 alloy is improved dramatically when a small amount of misch metal (Mm) is added. According to the XRD and SEM, the activation characteristic of the modified alloys is related to the cracks produced in the FeTi matrix by the volume expansion of β-Ti and Mm inclusions as a result of preferential hydrogenation. The activation characteristic is improved by providing oxide-free surfaces through which hydrogen can be absorbed readily. The modified alloys not only can be activated at room temperature without any thermal treatment, but also have high hydrogen storage capacity, for example, the desorption content of FeTi1.3(Mm)0.052 alloy is 177.8 mL/g at 333 K.

Abstract:Ti1.02NbxCr1.0-xMn0.6Fe0.4 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.05) and Ti1.02-yNbyCr1.0Mn0.6Fe0.4 (y = 0, 0.02, 0.05, and 0.08) alloys were prepared through induction levitation melting, and their crystal structure characteristics and hydrogen storage properties were investigated by experiments and first-principles calculations. The alloys exhibit a main C14-Laves phase with fine element homogeneity and minor oxides. As the Nb stoichiometry in Ti1.02NbxCr1.0-xMn0.6Fe0.4 (x = 0-0.05) alloys increases, the alloy exhibits enhanced hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics and capacity, despite an increased plateau slope due to improved hydrogen affinity. The Ti1.02-yNbyCr1.0Mn0.6Fe0.4 (y = 0-0.08) alloys show simultaneous hysteresis amelioration and plateau pressure increment as the Nb content increases, thanks to hydride destabilization and expanded interstitials. The effects can be attributed to the medium atomic size and hydrogen affinity of Nb. Moreover, the first-principles calculation results indicate preferential occupancy at 4f sites of Nb in Ti-Cr-Mn-Fe-based alloys, and an expanded crystal lattice can be achieved with Nb substitution for Cr or Ti. This work shows that Nb substitution can be a promising strategy for the hydrogen storage performance enhancement of Ti-Cr-based Laves phase alloys for hydrogen compression applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the hydrogen storage properties of FeTi1.3+x wt%Mm (x=0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0) hydrogen storage alloys, including the activation characteristics, pressure-composition isotherms and hydrogen storage capacities, have been investigated systematically. The results indicate that the activation characteristics of an FeTi alloy modified with excess Ti and a small amount of Mm has been improved markedly. The alloys absorb a noticeable amount of hydrogen after a short period of incubation time at room temperature without any previous thermal treatment. Hydrogen storage properties of modified alloys vary with the content of Mm and the reaction temperature.

Abstract:The influence of Fe content on the microstructure and hydrogen storage properties of Ti16Zr5Cr22V57-xFex (x = 2-8) alloys was investigated systematically. The results show that all alloys consist of a BCC main phase and a small amount of C14 Laves secondary phase. The crystal lattice parameters of the BCC main phase in the alloys decrease with the increase of the Fe content. Under moderate conditions, all the alloys have good activation behaviors and hydriding/dehydriding kinetics. As the x increases, the hydrogen desorption plateau pressure of the alloys increases consequently. Among the studied alloys, Ti16Zr5Cr22V55Fe2 alloy has suitable hydrogen desorption plateau pressures indicated by the middle value of pressure range. Abstract:Ti10V84−xFe6Zrx (x=1, 2, 4, 6, 8) hydrogen storage alloys were prepared by induction melting with magnetic levitation, and the effects of Zr content on the microstructures and hydrogen storage properties have been investigated systematically. Abstract:Ti10V83-xFe6ZrMnx(x=0,2,4,6) hydrogen storage alloys were prepared by induction melting with magnetic levitation,and the effects of Mn content on the microstructures and hydrogen storage properties of the alloys have been investigated systematically. The alloys containing Mn can Absorb hydrogen without hydriding incubation time at 298K and under an initial hydrogen pressure of 4MPa. With increasing the Mn content in the alloys,the hydrogen desorption plateau is flattened,the plateau pressure increases first and then drops. However,the maximum hydrogen Absorption capacity at 298K and the effective hydrogen desorption capacity at 333K decrease gradually with the increase of the Mn content.

Abstract:TixCr1 - yFeyMn1.0 (x = 1.02, 1.05, 1.1, 0.05 <= y <= 0.25) alloys were prepared by plasma arc melting and annealing at 1273 K for 2 hours. The XRD results show that the main phase of all alloys is the C14 type Laves phase, and a little secondary phase exists in a mixture of the binary alloy phase. The lattice parameters increase with Ti super-stoichiometry ratio increasing, whereas smaller lattice parameters emerge with increasing Fe stoichiometry content. Additionally, as the Ti super-stoichiometry ratio decreases, the pressure-composition-temperature measurements indicated that hydrogen absorption and desorption plateau pressures of TixCr0.9Fe0.1Mn1.0 (x = 1.1, 1.05, 1.02) alloys increase from 3.15, 0.67, to 5.94, 1.13 MPa at 233 K, respectively. On the other hand, with the Fe content increasing in Ti1.05Cr1 - yFeyMn1.0 (0.1 <= y <= 0.25) alloys from 0.1 to 0.25, the hydrogen desorption plateau pressures increased from 1.41 to 2.46 MPa at 243 K. The hydrogen desorption plateau slopes reduce to 0.2 with Ti super-stoichiometry ratio decreasing to 1.02, but the alloys are very difficult to activate for hydrogen absorption and cannot activate when the Fe substituting for Cr exceeds 0.2. The maximum hydrogen storage capacities were more than 1.85 wt% at 201 K. The reversible hydrogen storage capacities can remain more than 1.55 wt% at 271 K. The enthalpy and entropy for all hydride dehydrogenation are in the range of 21.0 to 25.5 kJ/mol H-2 and 116 to 122 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. Our results suggest that Ti1.05Cr0.75Fe0.25Mn1.0 alloy with low enthalpy holds great promise for a high hydrogen pressure hybrid tank in a hydrogen refueling station (45 MPa at 333 K), and the other alloys of low cost may be used for a potable hybrid tank due to high dissociation pressure at 243 K and high volumetric density exceeding 40 kg/m(3).

Abstract:In order to improve the hydrogen storage properties of Ti(Cr-Mn)2 alloys,over stoichiometry of A side and partial substitution of Mn by transition metals were adopted,and the hydrogen storage properties of Tix(Cr-Mn-M)2(x=1.0,1.1;M=V,Fe,Ni,Cu) alloys were investigated.The experimental results showed that the alloys after partial substitution of Mn by V,Fe,Ni,Cu remain C14 laves phase structure,but their cell volume increase.After alloying with V,Fe,Ni and Cu,the activation properties of the alloys are improved remarkably,the hydrogen storage capacities increase,and the hydriding/dehydriding pressure hysteresis decrease.Alloying with Fe leads to increase of dehydriding pressure,while alloying with V,Ni and Cu leads to decrease of hydriding/dehydriding pressure,this is due to the increase of cell volume.The hydrogen Absorption and desorption capacities of Ti1.1Cr1.2Mn0.5Cu0.3 reach 1.95wt% and 1.72wt%,respectively.Using this alloy a metal hydride hybrid high-pressure hydrogen storage vessel with working pressure of 40 MPa was composed and its hydrogen storage density was calculated.When the volume fraction of hydrogen storage alloy reaches 0.20,the volumetric hydrogen storage density of this hybrid hydrogen storage vessel by more increases than 57%.

Abstract:The hydrogen storage capabilities of the alloys Fe 0.85Mn 0.15Ti 0.9M 0.1 (M=Zr, V, Ca) have been studied systematically. Compared with the alloy Fe 0.85Mn 0.15Ti, the alloy Fe 0.85Mn 0.15Ti 0.9Zr 0.1 has good activation behavior, it can absorb hydrogen at room temperature after a short incubation period without previous thermal treatment. Because high hydrogen-containing α phase was formed during hydrogenating, the hydrogen storage capacity of the modified alloy decreases, and the plateau characteristic of p-c-T curve of the alloy become worse. The activation behavior of the alloy Fe 0.85Mn 0.15Ti 0.9V 0.1 is further improved. It can be hydrogenated at room temperature without any incubation period. The hydrogen capacity of the alloy also decreases slightly, while the plateau characteristic have no remarkable variation. The hydrogen storage capability of the alloy Fe 0.85Mn 0.15Ti is not changed appreciably when a small amount of Ti is replaced by Ca. XRD analysis results indicate that the hydrogen storage capability is related to the second phase when a small amount of Ti is replaced by other elements in the alloy Fe 0.85Mn 0.15Ti.

Abstract:Ti10V80−xFe6Zr4Crx (x=0, 6, 10 and 14) alloys were prepared by levitation induction melting, and the effects of Cr content on the structural and hydrogen storage characteristics have been investigated systematically. The results show that alloys investigated consist of a V-based solid solution main phase with BCC structure and a small amount of C14 Laves secondary phase. As the Cr content increases, the unit cell volumes of both phases decrease. It is found that all these alloys have good activation behavior and hydriding/dehydriding kinetics. As the Cr content in the alloys increases, the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity at room temperature decreases gradually, and the effective hydrogen desorption capacity increases first and then decreases. The XRD and DSC analyses show that the stability of mono-hydride phase (β) in the sample is heightened with increasing Cr content. Among the alloys studied, Ti10V74Fe6Zr4Cr6 alloy has the best overall property.

Abstract:The phase structures and hydrogen storage properties of TiV1.35Cr1.35-xMnx alloys (x = 0, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.45) have been investigated. The XRD analysis shows that all alloys have a single solid solution phase with a b.c.c. structure and the lattice constant reduces with the increase of manganese content. It was found that the activation behavior of the alloy debases, due to the partial substitution of Cr with Mn, and the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity at 25 °C decreases slightly too. But the addition of Mn decreases the hysteresis of P-C isotherm and the slope of the hydrogen desorption plateau, thereby the effective hydrogen desorption capacity at 100°C and hydrogen desorption/absorption ratio increase and reach the maximum value at x=0.35.

The XRD and SEM analysis show that the alloy with Zr content of x=1 consists of a V-based solid solution main phase with bcc structure and an a-Zr secondary phase; as x=3～7, the alloys consist of a V-based solid solution main phase and an α-ZrCr_2 secondary phase. It is found that with the increase of Zr content in the alloys, the activation behavior is improved; the hydrogen absorption capacity at 20℃ and the effective hydrogen desorption capacity at 80℃ all increase first and then decrease, while the maximum values are obtained at x=5; the hysteresis of the P-C isotherm decreases and its slope increases. Among these alloys studied, (Ti-Cr)_(40)V_(55)Zr_5 alloy has a good overall property, such as the activation behavior of 2 cycles, the hydrogen absorption capacity of 403 ml/g at room temperature and the effective desorption capacity of 230 ml/g at 80℃.

Phase Structure and Hydrogen Storage Properties of Ti17cr23v55-Xzr5fex (X=11 Similar to 16) Alloys

Abstract:The phase structure and hydrogen storage properties of Ti17Cr23V55-xZr5Fex (x = 11 similar to 16) alloys have been investigated systematically. XRD and SEM analysis show that all of the alloys consist of a main phase of V-based solid solution with bcc structure and some secondary phases of sigma-FeCr and Cr2Zr. With the increase of Fe content in the alloys, the abundance and unit cell volume of the bcc main phase decrease, the sigma-FeCr phase content increases, and the Cr2Zr phase content is almost invariable. It is found that all of these alloys have a very good activation behavior and a good kinetic behavior. They are activated during the first hydrogenation time and absorb hydrogen rapidly without hydrogenation gestation time. As the Fe content increases from x = 11 to x = 16, the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity decreases from 268 ml/g to 251 ml/g at 20 degrees C, and the effective hydrogen desorption capacity decreases from 153 ml/g to 137 ml/g at 80 degrees C. The result shows that eliminating the sigma-FeCr phase in the alloy is essential for improving the hydrogen storage ability of these alloys.

Abstract:V2.1TiNi0.4Zr0.06Cux (x=0-0.12) hydrogen storage alloys were prepared by induction melting with magnetic levitation, and the effects of Cu content on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of the alloys were investigated by XRD, SEM, EDS, and electrochemical test. It was found that all the alloys was consisted of a V-based solid solution main phase and a C14-type Laves secondary phase in the form of three-dimensional network. The secondary phase precipitates along the grain boundaries of the main phase. The unit cells of both main phase and secondary phase expand with increasing Cu content. The results showed that the maximum discharge capacity was improved and the activation behavior was invariable as some Cu (x=0.03-0.06) was added into the V2.1TiNi0.4Zr0.06 alloy. However, higher Cu content (x >= 0.09) in the alloy impairs the discharge capacity. Furthermore, adding Cu into the V2.1TiNi0.4Zr0.06 alloy can improve its cycling stability and high-rate dischargeability significantly.

Abstract:The phase structures and hydrogen storage characteristics of (Ti0.1V0.9)(100-x)Fe-x (x=0, 2, 4, 6) alloys were investigated systematically. The microstructure analysis shows that all of the alloys consist of a single vanadium-based solid-solution phase with BCC structure. As the Fe content increased, the lattice parameter descends linearly, the unit cell volume also decreased. It is found that all of the alloys have good kinetics behaviors and can absorb hydrogen without any hydrogenation gestation time at 10 degrees C and under an initial hydrogen pressure of 4 MPa. As the Fe content increases from 0 to 6, the activation property of the alloys is improved, the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity at 10 degrees C decreases from 509.5 ml/g to 424.8 ml/g, and the effective hydrogen desorption capacity increases first and then decreases, while the maximum value of 255.6 ml/g is obtained at x=4. Among these alloys studied, the Ti9.6V86.4Fe4 alloy has a good overall property, such as the activation number of 2 cycles, the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity of 494.5 ml/g at 10 degrees C and the effective hydrogen desorption capacity of 255.6 ml/g at 50 degrees C.
Hydrogen Storage Properties of Mg+10% TiFe_(1-x)Cr_x(x=0,0.3) Multi-Phase Alloys

Abstract:Mg+10%TiFe1-xCrx(x=0,0.3) multi-phase alloys and pure magnesium were composed by high energy mechanical milling,and their hydrogen storage characteristics were investigated comparatively.The result shows that the hydrogen storage properties increase remarkably after pure magnesium ball-milled with 10% TiFe1-xCrx(x=0,0.3).Moreover,the chromium content also influences the hydrogen storage characteristics.Furthermore,the ball-milled composite of Mg+10%TiFe0.7Cr0.3 has the best hydrogen storage properties with hydrogenation capacity(mass fraction) of 7.14 % and dehydrogenation capacity of 6.91% at 613 K.In addition,at the lower temperature of 493-573 K,the Cr-contained composite exhibits the best dehydrogenating kinetics.The analysis with X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS) indicates that the fine TiFe1-xCrx particles distribute on the surface of magnesium base,acting as some catalysis sites,which improves the hydrogenating and dehydrogenating properties.
Influence of Ti Super-Stoichiometry on the Hydrogen Storage Properties of Ti1+xCr1.2Mn0.2Fe0.6 (x = 0–0.1) Alloys for Hybrid Hydrogen Storage Application

Abstract:Ti1+xCr1.2Mn0.2Fe0.6 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1) alloys with high hydrogen desorption plateau pressures for hybrid hydrogen storage vessel application were prepared by induction levitation melting, as well as the effect of Ti super-stoichiometry on the crystallographic characteristics and hydrogen storage properties were systematically investigated. The results show that all of the alloys were determined as a single phase of C14-type Laves structure, the unit cell volume expands with increasing Ti content. Compared with the stoichiometric TiCr1.2Mn0.2Fe0.6 alloy, the titanium super-stoichiometric Ti1+xCr1.2Mn0.2Fe0.6 (x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1) alloys have larger hydrogen storage capacities and lower hydrogen desorption plateau pressures. Among the studied alloys, Ti1.02Cr1.2Mn0.2Fe0.6 has the best overall properties for hybrid hydrogen storage application, its hydrogen desorption plateau pressure at 318 K is 37.69 MPa, its hydrogen storage capacity is 1.61 wt.% and its dissociation enthalpy (Delta H-d) is 16.67 kJ/mol H-2.
