Abstract:The fractal dimensions of the specimen impact fracture surface of nanosized calcium carbonate reinforced polycaprolactone (PCL) composites were determined using a structure-function method; and the correlation between V-notched Izod impact strength measured at room temperature and fractal dimensions was studied. It was found that the fractal dimension range of the specimen fracture surface was from about 1.918 to 1.967, and all of the correlation coefficients were higher than 0.9. There was a strong relationship between the fracture surface fractal dimension and the impact strength. It indicated that the specimen fracture surface of the composites had obvious fractal character, the measured impact strength increased with increasing the fracture surface fractal dimension, and the correlation between them obeyed a three-order polynomial equation. In addition, the toughening mechanisms of the PCL nanocomposites were discussed.
