Abstract:Ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) were commonly fabricated with two donors or two acceptors; the third component has complementary absorption spectra with a host system to improve photon harvesting. In this work, a series of nonfullerene PSCs were fabricated with J71 as the donor and IT-M and/or ITIC with an almost identical band gap as acceptors. Although IT-M and ITIC have almost identical band gaps, the two optimized binary PSCs exhibit different photovoltaic parameters. The short current density (J(sc).) and open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of J71:IT-M based PSCs are larger than those of J71:ITIC based PSCs; the other key parameter, the fill factor (FF), is just the opposite. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of optimized ternary PSCs arrives at 11.60% by inheriting the advantages of binary PSCs. This work may provide a new strategy for preparing efficient nonfullerene ternary PSCs by selecting binary PSCs with complementary photovoltaic parameters.

Abstract:Polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated with PTB7-Th as donor and fluorinated non-fullerene materials IEICO-4F, IT-4F or their mixture as acceptor. Binary PSCs with IEICO-4F or IT-4F as acceptor exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.74% or 8.81% and fill factor (FF) of 63.32% or 73.90%, respectively. The PCE of 11.78% is achieved for the optimized ternary PSCs with 25 wt% IT-4F in acceptors, resulting from over 12.3% FF improvement (71.12% vs 63.32%). The distinguished FF improvement should be attributed to the optimized molecular arrangement and phase separation scale by incorporating the third component as morphology regulator. This work provides an efficient strategy on selecting materials for achieving efficient ternary PSCs by combining the superior photovoltaic parameters of two corresponding binary PSCs, in addition to the used materials with complementary absorption spectra.

Abstract:Highly efficient ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) are fabricated from two well-compatible small molecular nonfullerene acceptors (INPIC-4F and MeIC1) and one polymer donor, PBDB-T. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the INPIC-4F or MeIC1 based binary PSCs reaches 12.55% and 11.53%. Based on these efficient binary PSCs, a high PCE of 13.73% is achieved in the ternary PSCs with 50 wt% MeIC1 in the acceptors, resulting from the simultaneously improved short circuit current (J(SC)) of 21.86 mA cm(-2), open circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.88 V and fill factor (FF) of 71.39%. The PCE improvement of the ternary PSCs should be mainly attributed to the simultaneously optimized photon harvesting and film morphology of the ternary active layers. This result may provide more in-depth insight into the material selection criteria for fabricating highly efficient ternary PSCs: (i) the complementary absorption spectra and good compatibility of the used materials; (ii) the complementary photovoltaic parameters of the corresponding two binary PSCs.

Abstract:Ternary strategy has been considered as an efficient method to achieve high performance PSCs. A PCE of 17.22% is achieved in the optimized ternary PSCs with 10 wt% MF1 in acceptors. The over 8% PCE improvement by employing ternary strategy is attributed to the simultaneously increased JSC of 25.68 mA cm–2, VOC of 0.853 V and FF of 78.61% compared with Y6 based binary PSCs. The good compatibility of MF1 and Y6 can be confirmed from Raman mapping, contact angle, cyclic voltammetry and morphology, which is the prerequisite to form alloy-like state. Electron mobility in ternary active layers strongly depends on MF1 content in acceptors due to the different LUMO levels of Y6 and MF1, which can well explain the wave-like varied FF of ternary PSCs. The third-party certified PCE of 16.8% should be one of the highest values for single bulk heterojunction PSCs. This work provides sufficient references for selecting materials to achieve efficient ternary PSCs.

Abstract:The ternary structure that combines fullerene and nonfullerene acceptors in a photoactive layer is demonstrated as an effective approach for boosting the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, highly efficient ternary OSCs comprising a wide‐bandgap polymer donor (PBT1‐C), a narrow‐bandgap nonfullerene acceptor (IT‐2F), and a typical fullerene derivative (PC71BM) are reported. It is found that the addition of PC71BM into the PBT1‐C:IT‐2F blend not only increases the device efficiency up to 12.2%, but also improves the ambient stability of the OSCs. Detailed investigations indicate that the improvement in photovoltaic performance benefits from synergistic effects of increased photon‐harvesting, enhanced charge separation and transport, suppressed trap‐assisted recombination, and optimized film morphology. Moreover, it is noticed that such a ternary system exhibits excellent tolerance to the PC71BM component, for which PCEs over 11.2% can be maintained throughout the whole blend ratios, higher than that (11.0%) of PBT1‐C:IT‐2F binary reference device.

Abstract:A ternary strategy is proposed toward highly efficient all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs) by introducing end‐capped PM6TPO. The champion device based on PM6:PM6TPO:PY‐IT exhibits an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.0%, which is attributable to the optimal morphology with improved miscibility and reduced phase separation. It is worth mentioning this is one of the highest PCEs known to the authors for all‐PSCs. Recently, all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs) have received increasing attention and made tremendous progress. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of all‐PSCs still lags behind the polymer‐donor‐small‐molecule‐acceptor based organic solar cells, owing to the excessive phase separation with poor miscibility between polymer donor and acceptor. In this research, an "end‐capped" ternary strategy is proposed by introducing PM6TPO as a third component to fabricate highly efficient all‐PSCs. The PM6:PM6TPO:PY‐IT based ternary devices exhibit impressive PCE of 17.0% with enhanced light absorption and optimal morphology, and the introduction of PM6TPO significantly reduces the phase separation. The ternary devices also exhibit improved stability, outstanding tolerance of active layer thickness, and high performance of 1 cm2 unit cells. More importantly, the "end‐capped" ternary strategy enables efficient and facile improvement of all‐PSCs performance without additional selection and complicated synthesis for the third component.

Abstract:Introducing a third component into organic bulk heterojunction solar cells has become an effective strategy to improve photovoltaic performance. Meanwhile, the rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has pushed the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) to a higher standard. Herein, a series of fullerene-free ternary solar cells are fabricated based on a wide bandgap acceptor, IDTT-M, together with a wide bandgap donor polymer PM6 and a narrow bandgap NFA Y6. Insights from the morphological and electronic characterizations reveal that IDTT-M has been incorporated into Y6 domains without disrupting its molecular packing and sacrificing its electron mobility and work synergistically with Y6 to regulate the packing pattern of PM6, leading to enhanced hole mobility and suppressed recombination. IDTT-M further functions as an energy-level mediator that increases open-circuit voltage (VOC) in ternary devices. In addition, efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between IDTT-M and Y6 provides a non-radiative pathway for facilitating exciton dissociation and charge collection. As a result, the optimized ternary device features a significantly improved PCE up to 16.63% with simultaneously enhanced short-circuit current (JSC), VOC, and fill factor (FF).

Abstract:Achieving a finely tuned active layer morphology with a suitable vertical phase to facilitate both charge generation and charge transport has long been the main goal for pursuing the highly efficient bulk heterojunction (BHJ) all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs). Herein, a solution to address the above challenge via synergistically combining the ternary blend strategy and the layer‐by‐layer (LbL) procedure is proposed. By introducing a synthesized polymer acceptor (PA), PY‐Cl, with higher crystallinity into the designed host acceptor PY‐SSe‐V, vertical phase distribution and molecular ordering of the LbL‐type ternary all‐PSCs can be improved in comparison to the LbL‐type PM6/PY‐SSe‐V binary all‐PSCs. The formation of the superior bulk microstructure can not only promote charge transport and extraction properties but also reduce energetic disorder and non‐radiative recombination loss, thus improving all three photovoltaic parameters simultaneously. Consequently, the PM6/(PY‐SSe‐V:PY‐Cl) ternary all‐PSCs show the best efficiency of 18.14%, which is among the highest values reported to date for all‐PSCs. Abstract:The ternary strategy, introducing a third component into a binary blend, opens a simple and promising avenue to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). The judicious selection of an appropriate third component, without sacrificing the photocurrent and voltage output of the OSC, is of significant importance in ternary devices. Herein, highly efficient OSCs fabricated using a ternary approach are demonstrated, wherein a novel non-fullerene acceptor L8-BO-F is designed and incorporated into the PM6:BTP-eC9 blend. The three components show complementary absorption spectra and cascade energy alignment. L8-BO-F and BTP-eC9 are found to form a homogeneous mixed phase, which improves the molecular packing of both the donor and acceptor materials, and optimizes the ternary blend morphology. Moreover, the addition of L8-BO-F into the binary blend suppresses the non-radiative recombination, thus leading to a reduced voltage loss. Consequently, concurrent increases in open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and fill factor are realized, resulting in an unprecedented PCE of 18.66% (certified value of 18.2%), which represents the highest efficiency values reported for both single-junction and tandem OSCs so far.

Abstract:To achieve efficient polymer solar cells (PSCs) with full utilization of the whole spectrum, the multi-component devices are of great importance to be deeply explored, especially for their capability of one-step fabrication. However, the research about one same binary system simultaneously derivated various multi-component PSC is still very limited. Herein, we achieved the whole constructions from one binary host to different ternary systems and even the quaternary one. The ternary strategies with fullerene acceptor, PC71BM, and non-fullerene acceptor, BT6IC-BO-4Cl, as the third component, both boosted the device efficiencies of PBT4Cl-Bz: IT-4F binary system from about 9% to comparatively beyond 11%. Despite the comparable improvement of performance, there existed other similarities and differences in two ternary strategies. In detail, the isotropic carrier transport of PC71BM which largely elevated the fill factor (FF) in the corresponding devices, while the strong absorption of BT6IC-BO-4Cl enhanced the short current density (Jsc) most. More interestingly, quaternary devices based on PBT4Cl-Bz: IT-4F: PC71BM: BT6IC-BO-4Cl could combine both advantages of fullerene and non-fullerene ternary strategies, further pumped the Jsc from 16.44 to the highest level of 19.66 mA cm−2 among all devices, eventually resulted in an optimized efficiency of 11.69%. It reveals that both fullerene and non-fullerene ternary strategies have their unique feature to elevate the device performance either by efficient isotropic carrier transport or better coverage of whole sunlight spectrum and easy tunable energy levels from organic materials. The key is how to integrate the two pathways in one system and provide a more competitive solution facing high-quality PSCs.

Abstract:In recent years, the ternary strategy has been proven to be an effective way to improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, an asymmetric medium-band gap non-fullerene acceptor (AFIC) is synthesized and added as the third component into the PM6:BTP-eC9 binary blend for a highly efficient ternary OSC. AFIC exhibits a well-complementary absorption spectrum to the host binary blend, which benefits light harvesting of the active layer. Furthermore, AFIC shows a large dipole moment and good miscibility with BTP-eC9, which facilitates the formation of a stable well-mixed phase and enhances molecular packing in the blend, leading to improved charge transport and suppressed charge recombination in ternary devices. As a result, the ternary OSC based on PM6:BTP-eC9:AFIC demonstrates a significantly improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.7% compared to its binary device with a PCE of 17.5%, which is attributed to the synergistic enhancement of the open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current density (Jsc), and fill factor (FF).

Abstract:Although the rapid development of polymer solar cells (PSCs) has been achieved, it is still a great challenge to explore efficient ways for improving power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs from materials and device engineering. Ternary strategy has been confirmed as an efficient way to improve PCE of PSCs by employing three kinds of materials. In this work, one polymer donor PM6, and two non-fullerene materials N3 and MF1 are selected to prepare ternary PSCs with layer-by-layer (LbL) or bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) structure. The LbL and BHJ-PSCs exhibit PCEs of 16.75% and 16.76% with 15 wt% MF1 content in acceptors, corresponding to over 5% or 4% PCE improvement compared with N3-based binary PSCs with LbL or BHJ structure. The PCE improvement is mainly attributed to the fill factor enhancement from 73.29% to 76.95% for LbL-PSCs or from 74.13% to 77.51% for BHJ-PSCs by employing the ternary strategy. This work indicates that ternary strategy has great potential in preparing highly efficient LbL-PSCs via simultaneously optimizing molecular arrangement and the thickness of each layer.

Abstract:Fabricating ternary solar cells (TSCs) is a promising strategy to improve the power conversion efficiency of organic photovoltaics without introducing sophisticated processing procedures. We report in this work high efficiency TSCs with the maximum PCE over 11% by introducing a medium band gap conjugated polymer PCDTBT8 into the PffBT4T-2OD:PC71BM binary photovoltaic system. Morphological investigation shows that the third component PCDTBT8 locates at the interface between PffBT4T-2OD and PC71BM without disrupting the crystallization of PffBT4T-2OD to maintain decent charge mobility, and loosens the fullerene aggregation networks to facilitate exciton dissociation. The efficient Förster energy transfer from PCDTBT8 to PffBT4T-2OD enables the ternary devices to retain a high short-circuit current density despite the slightly decreased light absorption. Device physics studies suggest that the addition of PCDTBT8 can enhance the built-in voltage, prolong the carrier lifetime, reduce the defect density and suppress the trap-assisted charge recombination, leading to an improved FF and VOC to enhance the efficiency of ternary devices.

Abstract:Developing organic solar cells (OSCs) based on a ternary active layer is one of the most effective approaches to maximize light harvesting and improve their photovoltaic performance. However, this strategy meets very limited success in all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs) due to the scarcity of narrow bandgap polymer acceptors and the challenge of morphology optimization. In fact, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of ternary all‐PSCs even lag behind binary all‐PSCs. Herein, highly efficient ternary all‐PSCs are realized based on an ultranarrow bandgap (ultra‐NBG) polymer acceptor DCNBT‐TPC, a medium bandgap polymer donor PTB7‐Th, and a wide bandgap polymer donor PBDB‐T. The optimized ternary all‐PSCs yield an excellent PCE of 12.1% with a remarkable short‐circuit current density of 21.9 mA cm−2. In fact, this PCE is the highest value reported for ternary all‐PSCs and is much higher than those of the corresponding binary all‐PSCs. Moreover, the optimized ternary all‐PSCs show a photostability with ≈68% of the initial PCE retained after 400 h illumination, which is more stable than the binary all‐PSCs. This work demonstrates that the utilization of a ternary all‐polymer system based on ultra‐NBG polymer acceptor blended with compatible polymer donors is an effective strategy to advance the field of all‐PSCs.

Abstract:Efficient semitransparent ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) are fabricated with narrow band gap material PTB7-Th as donor, two narrow band gap nonfullerene materials BDTThIT-4F and IEICO-4F as one alloyed acceptor. Firstly, the content of IEICO-4F in acceptors is optimized in opaque PSCs with 100 nm Ag as electrode, power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the optimized opaque PSCs arrives to 12.03% with 50 wt% IEICO-4F in the alloyed acceptor. The 1 nm Au/10 nm Ag is designed to replace 100 nm Ag as semitransparent electrode. The semitransparent electrode exhibits high transmittance in visible light range and low transmittance in long wavelength range, which is beneficial to improve photon harvesting of active layers prepared with narrow band gap materials. The semitransparent ternary PSCs exhibit a PCE of 9.40% with 24.6% average visible transmittance from 370 nm to 740 nm, which should be among the highest values for semitransparent PSCs. This work indicates that ternary strategy may have great potential in preparing efficient semitransparent PSCs with two narrow band gap nonfullerene materials.
Non-fullerene acceptor fibrils enable efficient ternary organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

Abstract:Optimizing the components and morphology within the photoactive layer of organic solar cells (OSCs) can significantly enhance their power conversion efficiency (PCE). A new A-D-A type non-fullerene acceptor IDMIC-4F is designed and synthesized in this work, and is employed as the third component to prepare high performance ternary solar cells. IDMIC-4F can form fibrils after solution casting, and the presence of this fibrillar structure in the PBDB-T-2F:BTP-4F host confines the growth of donors and acceptors into fine domains, as well as acting as transport channels to enhance electron mobility. Single junction ternary devices incorporating 10 wt% IDMIC-4F exhibit enhanced light absorption and balanced carrier mobility, and achieve a maximum PCE of 16.6% compared to 15.7% for the binary device, which is a remarkable efficiency for OSCs reported in literature. This non-fullerene acceptor fibril network strategy is a promising method to improve the photovoltaic performance of ternary OSCs.

Abstract:Limited by the relatively low short-circuit current density ( J sc ) and fill factor (FF), the efficiency of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is still inferior to the small molecular acceptor (SMA) counterpart-based devices. Herein, we fabricate efficient ternary all-PSCs by introducing a fluorinated small molecular acceptor-derived polymer acceptor named PYF-T- o to broaden the absorption of the all-polymer blend and improve the molecular crystallinity. PYF-T- o was found to have a good compatibility with the host PY-DT acceptor, thus contributing to form a homogeneous mixed phase in the active layer. Consequently, the ternary all-PSC exhibits simultaneously improved J sc and FF than those of the binary all-PSC, resulting in an impressive efficiency of 18.15% (certified as 17.73%). Moreover, the large-area (1 cm 2 ) and eco-friendly ternary all-PSCs (processed with o -xylene) were fabricated, and high efficiencies of 16.43% and 17.67% were obtained, respectively, showing the great potential of all-PSCs for future organic photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Ternary strategies have attracted extensive attention due to their potential in improving power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of single‐junction polymer solar cells (PSCs). In this work, a novel wide bandgap polymer donor (Egopt ≈ 2.0 eV) named PBT(E)BTz with a deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level (≈−5.73 eV) is designed and synthesized. PBT(E)BTz is first incorporated as the third component into the classic PBDB‐T‐SF:IT‐4F binary PSC system to fabricate efficient ternary PSCs. A higher PCE of 13.19% is achieved in the ternary PSCs with a 5% addition of PBT(E)BTz over binary PSCs (12.14%). Similarly, addition of PBT(E)BTz improves the PCE for PBDB‐T:IT‐M binary PSCs from 10.50% to 11.06%. The study shows that the improved PCE in ternary PSCs is mainly attributed to the suppressed charge carrier recombination and more balanced charge transport. The generality of PBT(E)BTz as a third component is further evidenced in another efficient binary PSC system—PBDB‐TF:BTP‐4Cl: an optimized PCE of 16.26% is realized in the ternary devices. This work shows that PBT(E)BTz possessing a deep HOMO level as an additional component is an effective ternary PSC construction strategy toward enhancing device performance. Furthermore, the ternary device with 5% PBT(E)BTz displays better thermal and light stability over binary devices.

Abstract:Two different nonfullerene acceptors and one copolymer are used to fabricate ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). The two acceptors show unique interactions that reduce crystallinity and form a homogeneous mixed phase in the blend film, leading to a high efficiency of approximate to 10.3%, the highest performance reported for nonfullerene ternary blends. This work provides a new approach to fabricate high-performance OSCs.
