Abstract:The synthesis of nitrile under mild conditions was achieved via dehydration of primary amide using lead salts as catalyst. The reaction processes were intensified by not only adding surfactant but also continuously removing the only by-product, water from the system. Both aliphatic and aromatic nitriles can be prepared in this manner with moderate to excellent yields. The reaction mechanisms were obtained with high-level quantum chemical calculations, and the crucial role the anionic ligand plays in the transformations were revealed.

Abstract:This article briefly describes the current research situation about the method of compounding the anhydrous LaBr3 and CeBr3 including solvent removal in vacuum from LnBr3 crystal,bromination from metals or compounds of La and Ce,and purification of anhydrous LnBr3.Effects of these methods on impurity contents such as LnOBr3,waterebromide agent and others in final products are analyzed.The deficiencies in industrialization of the existing synthetic process are pointed out.Suggestions are proposed for improving the present process.

Abstract:Synthesis of ultrafine powders of high‐entropy rare‐earth silicates (HERESs) is critical for expanding their applications. Here, we report the synthesis of ultrafine HERES powders via a simple molten salt method for the first time. The results show that the single‐phase high‐entropy rare‐earth disilicates (HEREDs) and monosilicates (HEREMs) with monoclinic crystal structures can be successfully synthesized at 1073 and 1173 K, with the content ratios of raw rare‐earth oxides to SiO2 of 1:2.4 and 1:0.9, respectively. The average particle sizes of the as‐synthesized HEREDs and HEREMs powders are measured to be 1.32 and 1.64 μm, respectively. Meanwhile, uniform elemental distributions are confirmed in these powders without any element separation or segregation. In addition, a "dissolution–precipitation" mechanism is proposed to clarify the synthesis process of HERESs. This study not only provides a new synthesis methodology for HERES powders but also reveals a new insight into the growth mode for HERES powders.

Abstract:This work is aimed to synthesize anhydrous Li2B12H12 with high purity via solvent-free reaction between solid state reagents LiBH4 and B10H14. The reaction is conducted respectively in open system and sealed system for comparison. It is observed to experience three thermodynamic steps: (1) melting of B10H14 at 103°C, (2) phase transition of LiBH4 at 118°C and (3) Li2B12H12 formation at 135°C. With appropriate heat treatment at 180°C for 2h, Li2B12H12 with purity high as 93% is obtained in open system of 2LiBH4+1.4B10H14 with excess B10H14. Sealed system reacting at approximate even optimized conditions is unavailable to produce such high purity of Li2B12H12. Chemical equilibrium confines the sufficient interaction between LiBH4 and B10H14 in sealed system but it does not do in open system.

Abstract:Deuterated compounds are valuable in synthetic, pharmaceutical, and analytical chemistry. The deuteration of halides is a widespread method for highly site-selective deuterium installation. However, the facile, efficient, and economical deuterium incorporation remains challenging. In this work, we introduced a practical deuteration of (hetero)aryl halides through an electrochemical reduction method. This transformation proceeded smoothly at room temperature without metal catalysts, external reductants, or toxic or dangerous reagents. Remarkably, low-cost and chemically equivalent D2O was the sole deuterium source in this reaction. Professional electrosynthesis equipment was not essential because we demonstrated common batteries and electrodes were enough for this reaction.

Abstract:Development of sustainable routes for synthesis of zeolites is very important because of wide applications of zeolites at large scale in the fields of catalysis, adsorption, and separation. Here we report a novel and generalized route for synthesis of zeolites in the presence of NH4F from grinding the anhydrous starting solid materials and heating at 140-240 degrees C. Accordingly, zeolites of MFI, BEA*, EUO, and TON structures have been successfully synthesized. The presence of F- drives the crystallization of these zeolites from amorphous phase. Compared with conventional hydrothermal synthesis, the synthesis in this work not only simplifies the synthesis process but also significantly enhances the zeolite yields. These features should be potentially of great importance for industrial production of zeolites at large scale in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, a hydrothermal synthetic route has been developed to prepare a class of rare-earth fluoride nanocrystals, which have shown gradual changes in growth modes with decreasing ionic radii and may serve as a model system for studying the underlying principle in the controlled growth of rare-earth nanocrystals. Furthermore, we demonstrate the functionalization of these nanocrystals by means of doping, which have shown visible-to-the-naked-eye green up-conversion emissions and may find application in biological labeling fields.

Abstract:The synthesis of high-quality nanopowders is crucial to developing high-performance, high-entropy rare-earth silicates (HERESs). Herein, we report the synthesis of HERES nanopowders, including high-entropy rare-earth monosilicates (HEREMs) and high-entropy rare-earth disilicates (HEREDs), via a simple chemical co-precipitation method for the first time. By rationally optimizing the synthesis conditions, monoclinic HEREM nanopowders can be well synthesized with highly uniform element distributions. The formation of HEREM nanoparticles is governed by the production of the precursor from the co-precipitation reactions between rare-earth hydroxide and silicic acid at the atomic scale, followed by the dehydration of precursor skeletons. Furthermore, the validation of using this approach to prepare HERED nanopowders is also confirmed. This research will open up a new research area in synthesizing HERES nanopowders.

Abstract:The invention provides a rare earth aluminum alloy and a preparation method of the rare earth aluminum alloy. The rare earth aluminum alloy comprises the following compositions in percentage by weight: 0.7-1.3 wt percent of Si, 0.4-1.0 wt percent of Mn, 0.6-1.2 wt percent of Mg, 0.1-0.2 wt percent of Re, Fe larger than 0 wt percent and no more than 0.5 wt percent, Cr larger than 0 wt percent and no more than 0.25 wt percent, Zn larger than 0 wt percent and no more than 0.2 wt percent, Ti larger than 0 wt percent and no more than 0.1 wt percent, Cu larger than 0 wt percent and no more than 0.1 wt percent and the balance of aluminum. According to the rare earth aluminum alloy provided by the invention, because a small number of rare earth elements are added in an aluminum alloy and can have stronger affinity with gas and many nonmetals, and a compound with high melting point is produced, the rare earth aluminum alloy has the certain actions of dehydrogenation, refining and purification; and meanwhile, the rare earth elements can also be selectively adsorbed to an interface of a grown crystal grain to block the growth of the crystal grain and enable the crystal grain to be refined, thus strengthening the strength of the aluminum alloy and improving the processing performance of the aluminum alloy.

Abstract:Selective extraction-separation of yttrium(III) from heavy lanthanides into 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C(8)mim][PF(6)]) containing Cyanex 923 was achieved by adding a water-soluble complexing agent (EDTA) to aqueous phase. The simple and environmentally benign complexing method was proved to be an effective strategy for enhancing the selectivity of [C(n)mim][PF(6)]/[Tf(2)N]-based extraction system without increasing the loss of [C(n)mim](+).

Abstract:The purity of rare earth metals is one of the most important factors to research and develop high technique materials. However, high purity rare earth metals are not easily achieved. This review summarizes the preparation and purification methods of rare earth metals. First, the preparation principle and process of molten salt electrolysis and metal thermal reduction are introduced. The main sources of metallic impurities and interstitial impurities in rare earth metals as well as the action mechanism of reducing the concentration of different impurities are analyzed and summarized. Then, the purification principle and process of vacuum distillation, arc melting, zone melting, and solid state electromigration are also discussed. Furthermore, the removal effect and function rule of metallic impurities and interstitial impurities in rare earth metals are outlined. Finally, the crucial issues in the development of high purity rare earth metals are put forward, and the development direction of high purity rare earth metals in future are pointed out on this basis.

Removal of Aluminum from Rare-Earth Leaching Solutions Via a Complexation-Precipitation Process

Abstract:Due to the fact that the presence of aluminum in the leaching solutions of the ionic rare-earth ore adversely affects the subsequent extraction and separation of the REES (rare-earth elements), the aluminum must be reduced as soon as possible. Previously, organic substances with functional groups of carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amino, which can form stable and insoluble water complexes with aluminum ions in aqueous solutions under certain conditions, have been studied. This study used 8-hydroxyquinoline as the selective complexing precipitant for the purpose of complexing and precipitating aluminum in a rare-earth leaching solution. The results revealed that, when the amount of 8-hydroxyquinoline was 1.25 times that of the theoretical reaction amount; the reaction time was ten minutes; reaction temperature was 60 degrees C; and final pH of the solution was 4.5, then the Al3+ removal reached 94.39%, and the RE3+ loss was only 8.21%. Additionally, the obtained 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum was found to have the advantages of a rapid precipitation rate, large crystal particles, and small entrainment losses, and filtration had been easily completed. In addition, the characteristics of the obtained 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum would allow it to be used as photoelectric material with a high market value.

Abstract:A convenient hydrothermal method has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline CuSe and Ag2Se, based on the reactions of CuCl2·2H2O and AgNO3 with elemental selenium in dilute aqueous ammonia systems, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) examinations were carried out to determine the phase, grain size, morphology, and purity of the products. The aqueous ammonia system plays an important role in the formation of nanocrystalline CuSe and Ag2Se. A possible mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:A reactive crystallization method for the synthesis of lanthanum hydroxychloride (La(OH)2Cl) was developed to provide a new low-carbon route for the purification of rare earth elements in hydrometallurgy. The synthetic method reported herein represents a unique low-temperature route, short preparation time and inexpensive materials compared with previous methods, thus making it promising for industrial applications. The key factors controlling the product's phase were determined using single factor tests involving temperature, concentration of NH4Cl in the base solution and the molar ratio of NH4OH/La3+ added per minute into the base solution. Otherwise, the outcome is lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3). Subsequently, the synthesized products were characterized by employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Finally, the thermal decomposition behavior of La(OH)2Cl was assessed using thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Lanthanum oxychloride (LaClO) was obtained at about 360 °C. The thermal transformation from LaClO to La2O3 started at 400 °C and was a slow oxidation process. Pure La2O3 could be obtained when the temperature increased to 1500 °C.

Abstract:The extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) from rare earth fluoride molten-salt electrolytic slag has recently attracted attention because of the potential environmental hazards of this material and its rich content of valuable REEs. In this study, we used a selective nitration method to completely transform powdered samples into a nitrate mixture. We conducted a suitable selective roast-water leaching treatment, which resulted in >98% extraction efficiency for the REEs and Li; oxides of Fe and Al were left behind in the residue, which was attributed to the lower decomposition temperature of Fe(NO3)3 and Al(NO3)3. Furthermore, F volatilized in the exhaust as HF and was absorbed by an alkaline solution. HSC modeling and TG-DTA were conducted to simulate the nitration process to obtain the optimum conditions for electrolytic slag nitration. Fe, Al, and F impurities were separated from the lixivium to a great extent, thereby enabling the production of REE oxalates with >99% purity. Such a solution could be directly processed to extract metals without the need for pretreatments to remove impurities. The defluorination method and subsequent extraction of REEs and Li from fluoride molten-salt electrolytic slag address the exponential increase in REE production.

Abstract:Synergistic extraction of trivalent rare earths (RE=Sc, Y, La, Gd, Yb) from hydrochloride medium using mixture of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (HL, Cyanex272) and Sec-nonylphenoxy acetic acid (HA, CA-100) in n-heptane has been studied. The synergistic enhancement coefficients were observed for La (1.30), Gd (1.97), Y (3.59), Yb (8.21) and Sc (14.41). The results indicated yttrium was extracted into n-heptane as YH5A4L4 mixed species instead of Y(HL2)3, Y(OH)2A(HA)3 which were extracted by Cyanex272 and CA-100, respectively. A cation exchange mechanism was proposed and further clarified by IR spectra. The equilibrium constants, formation constants and thermodynamic functions such as ΔG, ΔH and ΔS were determined. The Cyanex272+CA-100 system not only enhanced the extraction efficiency of RE but also improved the selectivities significantly. The mutual separation factors of these ions suggested the mixture system would be of practical value in extraction and separation of rare earths.

Abstract:Rare earth fluoride molten-salt electrolytic slag has recently attracted significant attention because it is a potential environmental hazard that is rich in rare earth elements (REEs). Sulfation is commonly applied to the extraction of mineral commodities or scraps, such as REEs, Li, Ni, and Ti, as preparation for recycling. In this study, a selective sulfation method was performed by completely transforming powdered samples into a sulfate mixture. A suitable selective roast-water leaching treatment resulted in >95% extraction efficiencies for REEs and Li, while Fe and Al remained in the resultant residue as oxides. F was volatilized in the exhaust and then absorbed as LiF by a 1.0-M LiOH alkaline solution. Fe, Al, and F impurities were also separated from the lixivium, enabling the production of REE oxalates with >99% purity. Such a solution could be directly treated with subsequent precipitation processes without impurity removal pretreatments. The method of defluorination and extraction of REEs and Li from the rare earth fluoride molten-salt electrolytic slag is viable to address the exponential increase in REE production.
