Abstract:Due to similar reactivity in comparison with aromatic organometallic reagents, diaryliodonium salts are currently in broad usage as less toxic, highly efficient, stable and mild electrophilic reagents in organic synthesis. The hypervalent iodine center of diaryliodonium salts can lead to unique reactivity, which thus is frequently presented in metal-free arylations or metal-involved elementary reactions such as oxidative addition, reduction elimination, ligand coupling and ligand exchange reaction. As such, diaryliodonium salts have experienced explosive growth by transferring aromatics to the target molecules. In contrast to the reviews on the synthetic utility or aryl transformations by using diaryliodonium salts, this review provides a summary of their structures and the synthetic strategies towards them during recent decades.

Abstract:sulfomethyltetrazole 5 thiol disodium salt, a side chain of cefonicid,was synthesized from sodium bisulfite,ammonium hydroxide and formaldehyde through five steps of reactions. The yield of product was 10.8% in the optimum condition. The process was more economic in which the iodomethane is substituted to the bromoethane in the second reaction.

Abstract:The diaryliodonium salts derived from gemfibrozil and gemfibrozil methyl ester were synthesized from ArI(OH)OTs or bis(4-methoxyphenyl)iodonium diacetate with good regioselectivity. These iodonium salts were successfully used in the derivatization of gemfibrozil or gemfibrozil methyl ester, including fluorination, alkynylation, arylation, etherification, esterification, and iodination reactions.

Abstract:Our group has reported several one‐pot protocols for the synthesis of diaryliodonium salts, which have been recognized as attractive multi‐purpose reagents in areas ranging from organic synthesis to materials chemistry. Over the years, we have identified limitations in the published protocols concerning synthesis of mixed electron‐rich and electron‐poor, as well as highly electron‐poor diaryliodonium salts, as the corresponding starting materials are either too reactive or too unreactive. In this update, we discuss the underlying limitations concerning the stability and reactivity of the involved reagents and provide strategies to overcome these challenges through updated synthetic protocols.

Abstract:Diaryliodonium(III) salts are versatile reagents that exhibit a range of reactions, both in the presence and absence of metal catalysts. In this study, we developed efficient synthetic methods for the preparation of aryl(TMP)iodonium(III) carboxylates, by reaction of (diacetoxyiodo)arenes or iodosoarenes with 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene in the presence of a diverse range of organocarboxylic acids. These reactions were conducted under mild conditions using the trimethoxyphenyl (TMP) group as an auxiliary, without the need for additives, excess reagents, or counterion exchange in further steps. These protocols are compatible with a wide range of substituents on (hetero)aryl iodine(III) compounds, including electron-rich, electron-poor, sterically congested, and acid-labile groups, as well as a broad range of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids for the synthesis of diverse aryl(TMP)iodonium(III) carboxylates in high yields. Abstract:Two one-pot procedures for the construction of O- and N-bridged diaryliodonium triflates are described. An effective aryne-mediated arylation of o-iodophenols and -sulfonamides provides diarylether and diarylamine intermediates, which are subsequently oxidized and cyclized to the corresponding diaryliodaoxinium and -iodazinium salts. Different derivatizations were applied to demonstrate their capacity as useful building blocks and gain a deeper understanding toward the general reactivity of these underdeveloped but potentially highly useful compounds.

Abstract:We report an efficient method for the preparation of various 2,2′-dihalobiaryls from cyclic diaryliodonium salts. With cheap halogen sources as starting materials, a broad range of 2,2′-diiodobiaryls, 2-bromo-2′-iodobiaryls, and 2-chloro-2′-iodobiaryls were obtained under mild reaction conditions. Abstract:An efficient synthetic method for multi-substituted xanthones was developed. The reaction of diaryliodonium salts and salicylates was employed for the preparation of the xanthones. This method proceeded through an intermolecular etherification-acylation to give target heterocycles in good yields (up to 91%). Multi-substituted xanthones were gained by shifting the substituent of salicylates or diaryliodonium salts (C) 2017 Chinese Chemical Society and Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Abstract:By using vicinal aryl sulfonamide substituted diaryliodonium salts, a cascade of desulfonylation/aryl migration was promoted by triethylamine in the synthesis of sterically hindered biarylamines, which operated via a radical-induced reaction pathway. The products were readily converted into a variety of important synthons. Furthermore, coupling reactions of N-methyl biarylamine and 1,6-dibromopyrene provided a potentially attractive molecule in OLEDs.

Abstract:Diaryliodonium salts play an increasingly important role as an aryl source. Reported is the first synthesis of diaryliodoniums by rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H hyperiodination of electron-poor arenes under chelation assistance. This C-I coupling reaction occurred at room temperature with high regio-selectivity and functional-group compatibility. Subsequent diversified nucleophilic functionalization of a diaryliodonium allowed facile construction of C-C, C-N, C-O, C-S, C-P and C-Br bonds, and in all cases the initial functionalization occurred at the arene containing the chelating-group.

Abstract:The excellent reactivity of diaryliodonium salts has primarily been attributed to the efficient departure of the iodoarene unit, facilitating a variety of arylation reactions. However, one equivalent of iodoarene as a side‐product is a chemical waste in these reactions, which was criticized by chemists for hindering its popularity. Recently, the development of synthetic methodology that preserve the aryl iodine moiety received increasing attention. Oxidative rearrangement reactions involving aryliodonium reagents have significantly addressed the atom‐economic issue, thereby broadening the reaction scope. The resulting intricate aryliodine products are viewed as valuable synthons for the synthesis of natural products, pharmaceutical intermediates and other fine chemicals.

Abstract:A novel one-pot procedure is described for the transition-metal catalyzed sequential difunctionalization of diaryliodonium reagents. Reaction of commercially available anthranilic acid derivatives with readily available cyclic diaryliodonium salts followed by a Sonogashira coupling afforded various alkyne substituted biaryls in good to excellent yields. The functionalized biaryls were then utilized for the rapid and efficient one-pot synthesis of novel poly(hetero)aryl containing 10-membered lactones which are potential G-quadruplex binders and telomerase inhibitors.

Abstract:Aryl sulfides play an important role in pharmaceuticals, biologically active molecules and polymeric materials. Herein, a general and efficient protocol for Pd@COF-TB (a kind of Pd nanocatalyst supported by a covalent organic framework)/DIPEA-catalyzed one-pot synthesis of symmetrical diaryl sulfides through a C-S coupling reaction from aryl iodides and Na2S2O3 is developed. More importantly, the addition of N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) can not only enhance the catalytic activity of a Pd@COF-TB nanocatalyst, but also effectively inhibit the formation of biphenyl byproducts, which are a product of Ullmann reaction. Besides, it has been confirmed that the aryl Bunte salts generated in situ from Na2S2O3 and aryl iodides are the sulfur sources involved in this C-S coupling reaction. With the strategy proposed in this work, a variety of symmetrical diaryl sulfides could be obtained in moderate to excellent yields with a high tolerance of various functional groups. Moreover, a possible mechanism of this Pd nanoparticle-catalyzed C-S coupling reaction is proposed based on the results of controlling experiments.

Abstract:Sulfo(xo)nium diacylmethylides (sulfur ylides) are simple, stable, readily prepared, and versatile synthons. Compared with the sulfo(xo)nium monoacylmethylides, they can be compatible with more rigorous reaction conditions and showcase unique characteristics due to their excellent stability. This concept article provides an account for the syntheses of sulfo(xo)nium diacylmethylides, including the utilization of active methylene compounds, carbene precursors, sulfo(xo)nium monoacylmethylides, and electron‐deficient alkynes as substrates, with discussions on substrate scopes, proposed mechanisms, selected product examples, and applications. Challenges for further exploration and prospect on sulfo(xo)nium diacylmethylides in the future are also suggested.
