Abstract:The method in this work allows for the culling of the large exotherms and violent decompositions associated with the oxidation of thiol containing high–nitrogen heterocycles while still allowing for excellent purity of the desired product at higher yields than traditional methods. We provide the safest pathway for the synthesis of 1‐amino‐5H‐tetrazole via the desulfurization using zinc(II) chloride as a protecting agent as well as the improved synthesis of 1‐substituted‐1H‐tetrazole‐5‐thiols from their respective precursors. High‐nitrogen heterocycles are important to fields as diverse as pharmaceuticals and energetic materials. However, their synthesis can often be inconvenient or involve toxic precursors. In this work, we synthesize 1‐substituted‐5H‐tetrazoles via the desulfurization of readily available 1‐substituted‐1H‐tetrazole‐5‐thiones via a zinc chloride assisted desulfurization providing a new, safe, and efficient process with higher yields than the traditional desulfurization methods.
